  • This video shows what can go wrong with a good reel that is heavily used and not maintaned. The Penn Jigmaster in this video could not be repaired. Watch along to see how to avoid this problem.

    A new Jigmaster is $80, and they're not made in the U.S. anymore. Nice used ones on ebay are $50 and up. Personally, I'd invest the $18 for a new bridge, and get this one working again.

    Dennis, I just re-viewed the clip on repairing a frozen spool on the jigmaster. I have several questions about this repair. #1- I have a 500SM with the detach screw on the non-gear side plate. How does the repair differ? Assuming this repair can be done, does this also apply to other conventional reels in a similar fashion? A video related to this would be extremely helpful. Thank you for passing along your knowledge and experience. I have learned a lot.

      That repair is the same. The only difference is that you will need to remove the side plate screws on the gear side as opposed to using the single take apart screw system. Once you have the side plate off, the rest of the process is the same. Thanks for asking

    My first attempt to fix my Penn peerless no 9 was a complete failure. However I did learn that there were drags or metal washers in it. They were missing so I'll have to order those. Also I have to figure out how to reinstall the dog ear and little clip thing. When I was disassembling it, they popped out and I couldn't get a picture of how it was before. You videos helped but I still need to figure out this reel. I can see why people just Chuck them and get new ones. Very fustrating.

      I did a video on how to reset the dog and spring. You can view it at: th-cam.com/video/qTb04jiHS0o/w-d-xo.html Also - get the reel schematic at pennparts.com and it will show you the exploded view and how the drag washers are staggered - felt, metal, felt, metal barred, felt, metal, collar washer sequence. - I do not have a Penn nine, but I do have a Penn 10, which is the 9 with a larger main gear and ball bearings. I will do that one for you. - Dennis

      I can't remember where I got the #9 but I think whoever had it before, put some weird parts in it. For one, the main gear is solid on both sides, unlike the one on the website that has a hollowed out side for the drags and washers. Also the dog is solid with no hole like the one on the website. It's says made in USA on the plastic side plate but I don't know enough about Penn reels to Know the difference.

      I'm not sure what you have there. The solid gear could have been from the Penn 78 direct drive reel. Hmmm. If you send me pictures I'll see if I can make sense of it - Dennis

      I was thinking submerge the gear side in some Coleman camp fuel and see how much of that crud melts away...

      These reels take a beating and I have seen a few that make you wonder how they got to that point. This one was bad.

    Hi Dennis, I am refurbishing a Penn Senator 3/0 - 113. It is missing two screws that go into the left side plate, front.Do you know the part number please? so I can order a few.

      Sidney - your note says 3/0 but that is the model 112. the 4/0 is the 113. Either way, you can get the screws through Mysticparts.com and you can use the link below to see the schematic and part numbers. Thanks for asking - Dennis

    Hello Dennis ,
    I recently got a Penn 501 on line it was real cheap and I was lucky to “win” it . In reality it was a 500 with a 501 gear plate . I knew what I was buying but wanted to build my own 501. When I started to disassemble it , I noticed the take apart screw is stripped have you ever changed them I have 2-3 500 parts reels so parts aren’t an issue. I ground the pins with my dremmel tool to take the inner ring off but the spring retainer ferrule on the stripped screw is giving me problems. Is there a replacement for this or do I have to go into MacGyver Mode ? These parts are no longer listed at Mystic Parts .
    As always Thanks
    Rocky

      You can press in a new assembly if you have removed the old pieces including the copper ring on the bottom of the screw. You can still get the replacement part from Mysticparts.com or you can use another from one of your parts reels. The screws from the surfcaster 200 will also work here Here is the link to the Mysticparts.com product page www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Parts/129-200.aspx Dennis

    I have a 49....deep s reel...but i not sure what mono line test i should put on....i like pier fishing...but any suggestions??

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any mono starting at 15 pounds or higher will do. Usually these are spooled with 30 pound for trolling and 50 pound for larger fish. These are ideal for spooling with wire line for trolling sharks. - Dennis

    Ultrasonic cleaner is your friend😁

  • @Mahigeer1

    How about soaking in WD40, and then ultrasonic bath with chemicals?

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The penetrating oil will work. The Ultrasonic cleaner may not. I have had mixed results with it. I generally only use it for cosmetic cleaning with dish soap as the "chemical". I've tried other cleaners and some removed decals while the acid in others ruined the finishes. Thanks for the suggestion - Dennis
