    Now i know how to cast this reel. I have the Penn 85 reel that belongs to my grandfather whose 93 now. It is in really good condition and I plan on using it during this fishing season. After I get it cleaned this month I'll be out casting it far like you hopefully. These older reels are great and last generations~

    How blessed you are to live in an area that affords you such a diverse fishery! Fresh/salt/city/country/shore/boat!!! One of these days I'll relocate to where I'm closer than an hour or two from a 'good' lake!!! (Just got back from Minnesota - Biggest perch and bluegills of my life - a gazillion little northerns and massive blowups on a topwater frog.......I'm afraid that was my last trip north of the year....got really cold at night for the tent! Be safe Jerry

      Thanks Ron, it sometimes gets confusing as to where to fish and I have to flip a coin. Sounds like you had an amazing trip well worth the ride and made the most of it. One fish I never caught was the norther pike would love to get at a few perhaps well do a trip!

      @@FishYourWay Northern pike are my absolute favorite fish, I've been obsessed with those ugly jerks since I was seven years old. Allot of people think pike are dumb, but hook them and they become geniuses for using absolutely anything to their advantage. They seem to know when something isnt working so they try something else. They somehow sense when something is working and keep doing it. Once you get them in the boat they are the least co-operative fish you will have the displeasure of dealing with, their entire body is either razor sharp or covered in freakishly thick slime. They enjoy trying to mangle anything that comes near them and by the end of a good day blood has almost always been spilled. Despite all that you gently put them back in the water and they invariably manage to soak you as they swim away, I grew up on pike, picking apart weed beds with an old Mitchell combo and a handful of Len Thompson spoons, either from a canoe or shore, and to this day I still consider that the most pure form of fishing.

      @@FishYourWay Among the more notable mishaps I've had pike fishing: Having them stubbornly latch their jaws onto sapling trees, the ankle of my boot, and once on the tongue of a dog that got a little too curious. Twice I've had the pleasure of a fair-sized pike flopping on one end of a Rapala... while the other end is stuck firmly in my leg. You always try to unhook yourself first, total rookie mistake as the pike will refuse to behave... What's not to love?

    Love that you use a conventional setup even when surf fishing. Me too. My favorite is the Abu Garcia Ambassador 7000. The looks I get when I make an especially long cast. Exceptional with a tail wind, goes a country mile lol...Still get the occasional overrun, but usually because I forgot to adjust when changing lure weights. Keep up with the great videos!

    Hi Jerry, It looks like you're having fun with your vintage tackle. Maybe this winter you could do a video showing all your vintage tackle. I'm sure it would be very interesting. I just got back from Lake Vermillion in northern Minnesota. I caught 2 large mouth and 4 small mouth bass. All were caught on a senko green pumpkin 5" worm. (weightless) I cast the worm on top of the lily pads and dragged it over the edge so it could fall into the water. Most hits were on the way down or letting it sit on the bottom. I hope you have a good Blue Fish and Striper run this year. Good luck and have fun, Mickey

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hiya Mickey, thought you were out fishing. Those smallmouth sound interesting. Were they mixed in with the largemouth off the lily pads? Hope to do some freshwater fishing soon hope to find some in the fall or next spring. One of these days I will have to try the senko thanks as always Mickey!

    • @1539Mickey
      @1539Mickey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jerry, The small and large mouths were in the same cove. The smalls were on the other side of the cove from the large. The cove was about 100 yards across. The senkos are expensive and they tear easily. They are heavy and cast well without a weight. When the head gets ripped up, I cut it off and re-hook . I caught fish with half a senko. Say "Hi" to Danielle and have fun, Mickey

I wonder if you could kindly reexplain fishing Bucktail or any jig with a bow in the line to avoid drag/work naturally underwater.... it was some thing I never heard of and would request you to kindly explain it in detail... my apologies for the ignorance to grasp the cocept. much appreciated thanks again

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks a good question to. Its a little slack you want your lure to have without it the lure will behave unnatural. Mono line will help give it lift or sink at a slower rate making that bow easier. Braided line is thinner so the sink will be faster. Things to keep in mind for your presentation. You should see a belly and your line slightly slack thats when the lure is working its best.

    That's terrific Jerry, Time travel fishing! Are the bushings brass? I'm sure you could cast a 10/0 senator just as smooth lol. wish modern companies would make retro offerings with premium components for the that feel and dependable service....kind of like fly reels. They really don't change much. Some look crazy some not soo much. Lots of technology in a simple package. Rods too. Have you ever heard cycloid reels? Built in Illinois. I spent 4 hours in Charlie bookers shop When I lived in rockford, looking around and getting the history of that reel. He started making free spool versions back in I think 2000... No drag besides your thumb! He'd take you outside and cast a 5/8 practice plug almost a city block with no backlash and no thumbing. He bought the whole stock of reels after that company closed (friends with the owner) I think the world record muskie was caught with one! In the mid to late 40s I think they were selling for 40 bucks. It's soo up your alley Jerry. A work of art. So Charlie was making them after the originals and still might be... Man... I should have bought some... live and learn right? I'll give you a full report on my outing tomorrow. Got some smelt, squid, and gulp . I'm gonna find the monster doormat of the deep and stuff him with crabmeat!!! Maybe working towards work docks instead of the jetty might be the ticket. And a rod with clam out while I'm jigging. There's a point that way that looks good.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like that time travel fishing! Yea brass bushings on it I like them. Yea I handled a few of the cycloids but never casted with one they are pretty neat if I come across any I will have to put it aside for you. I tell people the drag is a luxury. You dont really need it you get PLENTY from your thumb. The thumb is actually a must better drag too. Big fish I add a leather flap. Did a few video with those. only thing sometimes its easy to put too much drag when you dont have an anti reverse and it will break wire. Great to hear your fishing tomorrow Joseph! Hope to get out to! I hope some bigums are out for you so you can use that crabmeat up! Thanks as always Joseph for sharing watching and always love the comment!

If you are handy what you can do is remove the ratchet gear turn it around and the reel will be lefty. dog and spring go on the other side. If you turn it around it will work but retrieve will be backwards so you line lies under or somehing
