I thoroughly enjoy watching all your videos! I’ve never serviced any of my reels but watching have given me the confidence I needed to try it , & just serviced my Garcia 6500 , I’ve had it for 20 years & love that reel ! Now it’s smooth as silk ! Thanks Dennis ! & yes I subscribed !
Thanks alot Dennis. I have 2 .310 gtis but there is a need for some t.l.c now a can start cleaning the inside of my 310s.i love the reels.i can cast my 310 gti about 70 yards it's a wonderful reel when in good working condition
That's a great find. You should enjoy fishing with it. IT is a solid and dependable reel that will last a long time - Best wishes for great fishing - Dennis
Thanks for the kind words of encouragement Joe. I am glad you were able to use my videos to help service your reels. Thanks for watching and stay tuned, there are more to come. Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle Will do. I don't think you have them over there, but if you have somethings similar, a Penn Mag 525 (1,2 or 3) would be very helpful. I have three of them that I use on a weekly basis. Thanks again.
If you could, maybe do a video on the penn fathom 2 speed. I bought one new and would love to visually see what's in it but scared to open without components flying apart. I know is relatively new so maybe hard to find that needs repair.
A friend and I were just talking last night he has one of these he has used for years. In gear terminology the gear you are calling the transition gear is called an idler gear.
Right. This is one of my quirks. I sometimes call a gear or part by what it does as opposed to the technical name. For years, I have called a yoke a collar, and a jack a transition piece. Tomato or Tomatoe. Just me being me - Dennis
Penn needs to get their act together and bring back the Squidder, or 505 Jigmaster for surf fishing. This means simple parts list, no level wind, ball bearings, and one screw take apart. With the GTI you do not need the anti-reverse defeat feature to play out line to a certain depth because you can count the number of times the level wind goes back and forth to get to the suspended fish depth. I rarely used it on my Squidders either.
Simple is always better. I prefer the open faced conventional reels, like the ones you mention for surfcasting. Unfortunately, that is becoming obsolete, like a manual transmission car, as the general public seems to prefer level wind features and spinning reels. - Dennis
I have a pen 310 gti graphite part number 23-60, my question is what gear or spring controls for the anti reverse dog?It skips and locks when it wants to.
Part number 14 and 15 on the schematic are the dog and the spring. Make sure the dog is not worn at the tip. That could cause the skip if the assembly is installed correctly - Dennis
Hi Dennis, could you please tell me what is the replacement for the reel handle of the Penn 310GTI? I need to replace this because it is broken. Thanks in advance. Bye.
Looking at the Mysticparts.com chart, almost all penn conventional reel handles will fit your 310. Look for a handle for a Penn Long Beach or JigMaster reel as they are most plentiful - Dennis
Hi. Great video. Thanks for publishing it. I have one quick message as I have a reel my younger son took apart and now I have to try putting it together. Can you use “reel butter” and the accompanying oil that they sell along with the butter for lubrication of the penn reels?
Yes you can. You do not need to use a specific manufacturer's oil or grease on their fishing reel. The key is to use a grease or oil that was designed for fishing reels. I stay away from general purpose greases and oils as they can break down faster or clog up reels. I'm seen countless examples of this in the reels I have serviced. Thanks for asking - Dennis
2nd Chance Tackle thanks for the information. Well, I have a 320GT2 that my son took apart and it would be nice if you could do a close up reassembly of the crank side and all the different springs and gears, dog latch and etc if you have one you could demonstrate. I’m so glad I found this site. I’ve watched a dozen or more already and I’ve only known about your channel for less than 24 hours. I pride myself in being able to do most things like this and if I had been the one to take it apart I would have no problem putting it back together. But right now all I’m looking at frustrates the heck out of me. Help if you can. It’ll be most appreciated!! I’ll be charging this channel on my Facebook and with all my fishing buddies.
I will see if I can find one. I am not sure. If I have one, I will be happy to do a video that details the gear side assembly. One of the best ways to see how the parts fit together is to get the reel schematic. You can find this at; Mysticparts.com. They are free downloads of almost all Penn reel schematics and you can order parts if you find any broken or missing pieces.
Is there a up grade drag system that I could use to up the drag on my 310 gti and will it work.i have herd people say you can use ht100 drag system for the sentors 4.0.let me know what you take is on this.
These are nice general purpose, level wind reels I prefer reels without the level wind feature when I am surfcasting. The extra drive gear that turns the worm and line guide is a drag on the spool when casting. I find that I can't throw the line as far because of that. The Penn Squider has always been a favorite of surfcasters because of the ball bearings and open frame.A modern day equivalent would be the Penn Squall 15. - Dennis
I have 3x 320GT2. No Back reeling feature. They are used for Halibut mainly. I am doing some pre-season maintenance and noticed that on one reel that, the pawl doesn't track in the worm gear 100%. Gets stuck on one side. Is it the pawl or the gear that is pooched? Thanks!
it is most likely the pawl that is worn on one side. This is easy to check since you have two of the same reel. Take the pawl from the one that is tracking correctly and put in in the one that is getting stuck. If it works OK with the change, then it is the pawl. If it still sticks, it is most likely to be the worm gear itself. The track could be damaged. In that case, the worm gear would need to be replaced. Thanks for asking Dennis
The procedures for the 321 are the same as a the 320 and 310. The only difference is that the 321 is a left handed reel and the 310/320 are right handed. You may need to reverse the rotation on the anti-reverse dog installation, but otherwise, they are the same. Take pictures when you disassemble and pull the reel schematic from Pennparts.com to ensure you have an understanding of the reel prior to work. Thanks for asking - Dennis
Wade - Is this normal wear, or did you open up the reel and it did not work when you put it back together? If this is normal wear, you need to order replacement drag washers and install them as is done in the video. If you need the parts, they are available through Mysticparts.com. If you had the reel apart and the drags were working properly prior to your efforts, then you need to disassemble and start anew. Most of the time something is mis-installed, like the ears on the metal washers not set into the case, or the ferrel missing. Hard to say, without seeing the reel. Please give me some more information and I will try to help further. Thanks for asking - Dennis
I hate to ask you so many questions I called Penn real company and got a sales rep I asked him florist in reels water resistance he said all of them and I asked him for a smaller reel 2 pan fish with he said he didn't know what panfish was so it's an hour I finally said kind of like a croaker or Whiting then he told me I would have to just pick one and try it
Thank you greatly for the video I was able to bring back my 310 GTi made in USA back to life..
Glad I could help. Thanks for the note and for watching - Dennis

The Penn 310 uses he drags washers from the Penn LongBeach 60. You can use the HT-100 washers from it - the 310 uses 5 washers in its set up - Dennis
