    I have to thank you for this. I was using a greenish purplish reddish underpainting for paintings, but there was a stillness to my paintings. When I used this technique it seemed strange at first but as soon as i started painting the first sienna outlines everything jumped out. BRilliant. This is the perfect underpainting technique. I love the practical idea of using cling film for the underpainting so you can just take it off afterwards. Thank you so much from a British guy living in Spain. You are helping so many people with this!

    I am a novice painter. I knew to use an underpainting, but never knew what color to use. Thanks for enlightening me.

    Hi George. I'm glad you enjoyed it. You can use other brands of acrylic paints and mediums with no problems. Most companies sell glazing liquids in both fast and slow dry versions. Even if you only have the faster drying glazing medium you can be successful. I often use just the fast dry medium when I need to finish the underpainting very quickly. That's the beauty of this technique, you can customize it to your particular needs. I think you will love painting on this surface. Have fun!

    I so wish you would post more videos. Three just isn’t enough. Please consider making a few more. Or at least one on how you go through the intuitive process of finding your picture after doing the underpainting.
    Is it the same as when you look for images in clouds, because that’s what I do. Would love to hear your process from the underpainting stage to just before you start applying color to the sky.

    Very cool. Thank you. I might have missed. Do you inter layer medium when painting underpainting in oils as well? Thanks.

    • @nathanclementsart
      @nathanclementsart  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @filmic1 When using oil paint to do your underpainting, use 1-2 drops of cobalt system drier ( from natural pigments website) in each pile of paint you are using and 5-10 drops of turpentine or the paint thinner of your choice. Using these too things you can layer your underpainting using oil paints. It's a sound practice to underpainting using oils but it dries much slower and will take you about a week to complete your underpainting. It's best to use a fast drying paint like acrylic for your underpainting. You can finish it in a matter of 10 minutes and be able to immediately start in oils. Cheers!

    Hi Max, I’m just beginning/ learning. If I’m doing a snow/winter scene, would I still use a warm/cool under painting or stick with cool colours. Thanks for the video, great advise, looking forward to seeing what I can manage to produce using it.

    @MaxColeArt - Thank you for showing us this beautiful process for underpainting (toning) our canvases! It's beautiful! And much appreciated! I was wondering the reason behind putting the acrylic medium down between the acrylic paint layers. I'm just learning to underpaint (tone) my canvases. I'm a beginner with art. I'm hooked & just love it!! 💜 I cannot get enough!! I wish I could work on art every day, 8+ hours a day. I really appreciated your video & showing us this great technique! Your canvas turned out beautiful! I like leaving drips, spray splashes, graphite marks, & other marks in my paintings showing through, & having that underpainting (toned) canvas is going to be of great help to my art! I'm excited to start working on a canvas I've underpainted (toned). The white canvas can also be daunting at times.
    When I started to try your underpainting process, I forgot to put the medium down before the layers of paint. So now I have 2 colors down with no medium, & am thinking I'll just have to not put the acrylic paint down with the medium this time I'll for sure remember from now on.
    Please let me know the reason why medium is put in between the layers of acrylic paint. I would really appreciate your feedback. Thank you for your assistance & teaching us how to make a beautiful underpainting (toned) canvas! 💜

    I @ be overjoyed to hear back from Max Cole Art, but if he doesn't respond, can someone tell me why you put medium between the layers of acrylic paint for your underpainting (toning)?
    Thank you!

    First time I've watched your painting, and the question I have is, I know you talked about using oils also.
    If you were just doing a acrylic painting would you also use the 4 coats of paint for underpainting.
    I've never seen anyone do that many, that is why I'm asking if this is something you do just because of using oils?

    • @nathanclementsart
      @nathanclementsart  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Jean. Yes. If you are sticking to acrylic throughout the painting, the underpainting method I show here would remain the same. The goal is to achieve a value 5, transparent pearly gray opal like underpainting. You can then proceed with the main body of the painting in acrylic, oils etc. Four coats are just an example. Some of my underpaintings have 6-10+ coats. You put as many alternating warm and cool transparent coats as are necessary to achieve the look you like for your underpainting.

    Hi. Thank you for the amazing video. I have two questions. First how can we do this underpainting for oil painting? Since acrylic dries fast but oil painting is not. So how can I paint over and over to achieve this under painting when I am using oil painting? Also What is value 5? and last can I convert normal colors to transparent? Thank you in advance for your kind attention.

      You can use acrylic under oil paints, which a lot of artists do as it dries much more quickly.

    Hi is underpainting required for all kinds of paintings
    Can you please specify which kind of painting should always have an underpainting and which painting doesn’t require much of underpainting. I’m assuming still live should always have underpainting I’m new to painting, mainly using acrylic as my medium

      There is no rule, it's about working out what looks good to your eye and what creates the finish you wanted to present.

    I was going to give painting a try but this looks way too complicated. It takes a boatload of supplies. I think I will go with my second choice, color pencils.

    Hi! Sooo, I did an underpainting with oil and gamsol yesterday. (Lightly)I realized that I might’ve made a mistake because I wasn’t planning on using oil for the entire way. Can I still paint acrylic over this? Please advise 🙏🏼

    • @aanaa3586
      @aanaa3586 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can put oil over acrylic but not the opposite, because the acrylic won't stick well to the oil underneath it and over the time the painting won't hold up well

    Useless. He does not explain why you need gesso, then medium then colour before you start painting. A beginner needs explanations. He repeats use warm over cool and then begins with a warm colour!

    Nah, don't use black ,you can create your own blacks.

    • @nathanclementsart
      @nathanclementsart  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most of the greatest masters in the history of painting disagree with you...and I do to. Black is powerful. This nonsense that black can be duplicated is utter nonsense. A dark VALUE can be duplicated but the versatility and special qualities of black can't. Experienced painters know this.
