Really great explanation Kari! I just did my first painting with an acrylic underpainting for the first time (normally I'll just use one medium: oil, acrylic gouache etc) and it was very useful and interesting to work with it. You explained it so well and I look forward to watching this painting take shape in your other videos. Well done!
You cover the background with an off-tone so that you can see the actual colours you paint over it and how they interact with other colours. Your eye picks it up differently. The old masters also did this to create a rich depth.
does it work on a regular canvas (mine is made of cotton I think) too? or only on primed paper? and would it still be possible to paint with oils over it? (I'm sorry, I never tried an underpainting before so it might be a stupid question)
That's not a stupid question at all! Yes, this process with absolutely work on cotton canvas, and you can then paint on it with oil. That's what I typically do - a thin underpainting in acrylic, let it dry overnight, then start on it the next day in oil. You just want to make sure the acrylic is completely dry before you begin your oil painting.

Ugh! Thank you so freaking much! This video has answered all the questions I had, and then some.

How does this not have more views? Extremely helpful, thank you!!!
You are so right! All you said is very helpful! I used toi be afraid of white blank sketch paper!
Glad it was helpful!

I am so glad I found your channel! Great lessons
Thank you!
Really informative! Also you give off Monica Geller vibes.😍
I've been told that so many times 😂
At 10:25 the cat looks like a smiling hybrid cat/frog. I love it.
😂
Thank you. Useful.
This was super helpful! Ty for making this 💞
Can you use water to dilute an acrylic instead of buying the thinning medium? Just for people who are just starting off
Yes you can. When mixing water with acrylic, just be careful not to use more than 50% water or it can break down the paint.
Your video is so helpful! Thanks!
You're welcome! I'm so glad you found it helpful :)
what a neat looking person
❤
Thanks for showing this. Learned some new things and have more to think about now
I came across your video. I had enjoyed very much. What flo aid did you use. Thanks.
The flow aid is made by Liquitex!
Thank you so much. Good lesson!
Glad you found it useful!
Is flow aid the same as gel medium?
No, it's not. Flow Aid is a specific medium manufactured by Liquitex that is added to your water instead of added directly into your paint.
You are very beautiful and would make a perfect model for a classical painting.
She sundar hai
What if I don't have flow aid.? Can I just use water?
Yes, but not as much as you see me using here. Adding too much water to acrylic paint will break down the paint. Flow aid prevents that break down.
What brand flow aid do you use? Thanks for the great video! I'm learning about undertone
Thanks! I use Liquitex brand flow aid
@@KariBreitigam thank you!!!!!
What is flow aid
It's an acrylic medium made by Liquitex
What is in Flow Aid?
Flow Aid is an acrylic painting medium from Liquitex that allows you to thin the paint to a wash without compromising the integrity of the paint
Where’s the oil painting? 🥰🥰🥰
