Two great coaches and 2 great centers going head-to-head. I was at that game as a Freshman playing trumpet with the UH Cougar Brass. Incredible way to spend your first year in college!!
I love the 1:27:00 mark when Thompson hugs Freddie Brown who threw the pass to James Worthy in the championship game two years earlier. Good for Freddie to get redemption
Great Game with two great teams. Heartbreaking Houston losing 2 years in a row after this( NC State the year before ). The next year Villanova in a major upset over Georgetown, who were going for 2 straight NCAA Championships. Villinova shot a record 72 or 78% in that game and still won by just 2 points. The Big East was a Beast Back then( Georgetown, Villanova, Syracuse, St. John’s, Connecticut, etc ). The ACC was soon to be like the Big East Was, though N.C. and Duke were great at this time. How cool that the Game is at the Old Kingdome in Seattle were the Seattle Supersonics and their Green and Yellow are hard to miss. Georgetown was one of The Greatest, if not thee greatest, College Basketball Defensive teams ever. This is the third the Hoyas were in out of Four straight NCAA Finals in a row. ( 82 lost to North Carolina, 83 NC State upsets Georgetown, 84 this game Georgetown beats Houston and 85 Villanova in an epic upset of Georgetown ). What an era NCAA Basketball and the many Greats back then( Ewing, Olajowan, Wingate, Seikaly, Pearl Washington, Sherman Douglass, Derrick Coleman, Walter Berry, Mark Jackson, Chris Mullin, Ed Pinckney, Gary McClain, Lorenzo Charles, Sydney Lowe, Reggie Williams, Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutombo, etc). R.I.P. John Thompson = One of the greatest College or any Level Coaches Ever.
The 1984 georgetown hoyas were the greatest college basketball in history because not only were they led by a prodigiously gifted giant/center named Patrick Ewing, but that team had to face another prodigiously, gifted giant/center named Akeem Olajuwon in the championship game and they had to do this in the financially deregulated, ultra competitive reagan-era. The 1984 N.C.A.A Basketball final is also remembered for having set the N.C.A.A. championship game record for the most assists by both teams.
Dont think u can say in history look at how the defense is staying in the paint....meaning they cant shoot or they just wont shoot in todays world u have to shoot they wouldn't be able to last
@@Likerios22244 In this game true they played a lot of zone and crowded the paint. But the Hoyas could also play you man to man and shut you down just as effectively. Besides Ewing, Gene Smith who didn't even play in the title game due to injury, was their best on ball defender, along with David Wingate, Reggie Williams, 6th man Bill Martin, Michael Jackson, and then throw in Michael Graham bringing a physical presence off the bench. If you couldn't play defense, John Thompson wasn't putting you on the floor.
The 1984 "N.C.A.A. Basketball champion, Georgetown " Hoyas", was the best defensive team I ever saw to this day. From top to bottom, Center to point guard, "Hoya paranoia" shut down most of their opponents.
College basketball used to be awesome and this was right in the middle of that glorious time. Houston made it back to the final four this year and I saw a picture of their team and I thought it was AAU or a High School team compared to players from this era.
Michael Jackson, Reggie Williams, Allen Iverson, Patrick Ewing, and Charles Smith are my favorite Hoyas players. Big east use to be a tough conference… Lead by a great coach, late great coach Thompson! Georgetown basketball was a culture a movement.. DC area was thriven….
R.I.P. John Thompson, the legendary Hall of Fame coach who became the first Black coach to win the NCAA tournament basketball championship after this Georgetown win over Houston in 1984!

It's interesting to see just how raw Hakeem was at this stage. To go from a guy who picked up the game late to maybe the most skilled center ever is incredible. IMO Ewing was a far better player in this game.
R.I.P. to a legendary coach. Coach Thompson's towering presence will be truly missed.

The replay value of 80s college basketball games, is legendary.
it's nice to meet you and i did do and will really LOVE superstars patrick ewing and alonzo mourning ALMOST as much legend hakeem olajuwon

RIP Coach Thompson. Passed away today, Monday, August 31, 2020 at age 78.
I love the 1:27:00 mark when Thompson hugs Freddie Brown who threw the pass to James Worthy in the championship game two years earlier. Good for Freddie to get redemption
That wasn't Brown's fault. Sleepy Floyd was the point guard, leading scorer and best shooter, he should have came and got the ball.
RIP Coach Thompson. A great coach but more importantly a great man!
The best
He wrote a book shortly before he passed. If your a fan of Thompson you might want to read it.
'I Came as a Shadow' is the title.
I’m 86 born and I’m watching it ..Best NCAA. ever. No Matter what. Patrick Ewing still one of the greatest.. Rip Big John
the 1980s NCAA was un-freaking-real. Best basketball ever
I would give 82 the nod. Ewing, Sleepy Floyd, James Worthy, Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins.
R.I.P Coach Thompson, a true legend and icon
I met him years ago in Vegas. He was such an amazing man. He'll be forever missed.
I was lucky and attended this game when I was in high school. It was one for the ages!

Love that Houston road uniforms had all odd numbers. Hakeem was 34 at home and 35 on the road
For a long time in high school basketball it was the same. Light color uniforms were even dark colored uniforms were odd.

Those announcer's were definitely pulling for Houston.

Honestly I love how Olajuwon and Ewing played against in the finals and Hakeem got the better end...
Akeem if you’re talking past
@@KQwest98 He was Hakeem in the 94 Finals
My favorite college basketball team
Rest in peace Coach Thompson.
I remembered watching this game, it was a great one. Ten years later, Olajuwon got even wirh Ewing in the 1994 NBA finals.

UH's lack of free throw shooting killed them.
I finally get to watch this game Mom wouldn’t let me watch as a kid because I had homework
15:00 Young tries to deliver a massive facial dunk to Ewing. would've been spectacular
Rest In Peace Cougs Coach Guy V. Lewis II, 1922-03-22 - 2015-11-26.

Glad to see Fred Brown win a championship. Especially after his turnover in 82 may have cost the Hoyas a title.
I’m 49 years old and I totally forgot how good David Wingate and Reggie Williams were… good times
Came here for my condolences,as you always be remembered. 🏀

Miss you big guy
Back when coaches dressed to impress on the sidelines.
Covid became an excuse for coaches to dress like bums.
Texas Tech-Gonzaga 2019 please?
Type it in
I couldn't believe this was the final game of the Phi Slamma Jamma era.

1:27:00 - Freddie Brown’s redemu
Was glad for Freddie Brown that he got a title after his mistake in the 1982 championship game.
So close to 3 Titles in the Ewing era.
Thx for video 😊, Hoya's 1st champion title, 😁
15:51 origin of Ewing's knee problems? Shoulda kept them bent maybe?
Back then when you got 1 or 2 seed you get a bye thank god it ain’t that today
Top 4 seeds in each region got a 1st round bye
Rest peacefully coach
please tell me do you all feel like the eliteness was highest at houston or with the rockets for legend hakeem olajuwon
So 1984 Ewing beats Olajuwon in college fast forward 10 years 1994 Olajuwon beats Ewing in the nba finals lol
This is when I became a Reggie Williams fan.
I take it your nickname is not Cadillac...
@@stilichobias correct. Because he wasn't that famous I didn't get teased about it. Lol! You're the first person to notice the name.
please tell me who you all feel was the best head coach between john thompson jeff van gundy don nelson and pat riley
Those DAZY DUKES LOL
(h)Akeem and Pat would meet again for a championship in the NBA Finals 11 years later
I thought Michael Brown was going to have a long career in the NBA. An athletic enforcer. A shame he couldn't stay out of trouble
Graham. Not brown.
Michael Graham
Coach Lewis should have played Benny Anders more very athletic guy.
Olajuwon losing both times in the national championship game vs North Carolina St. And Georgetown.

This game was such a long time ago 😴 😪 😒 🙄 😑 I remember watching the game a long time ago I was 13 years old
Those 2 nc teams kept these 2 from winning championships in the previous 2 years
With all that talent why wasn't Houston playing man to man?
Billy Packer, so biased towards Houston lol
He knows Houston from the championship the year before.
It's interesting to see just how raw Hakeem was at this stage. To go from a guy who picked up the game late to maybe the most skilled center ever is incredible. IMO Ewing was a far better player in this game.
Bald-headed Graham did not have the grades to be in college but he still played the game.
It’s a private religious college, they could have their own academic standards. Parsons College in Iowa was a prime example.
Nowadays nobody has to have any grades.
Thats 🏀
Ewing got the best of Olajuwon, but not in the Finals.
But right here, Patrick won
Let's go hoyas
Thay charge was terrible

RIP TO JOHN THOMPSON but basketball was so weak back then wide open shots they didn’t take!
