Thanks, football. See what you've taken away? The Big East Tournament was just about as riveting as the NCAAs. Hoyas, 'Cuse, Huskies, Johnnies, 'Cats, Pitt, ... so many obscenely good memories. RIP, college hoops as we knew and loved it.

You KNOW this was a big game when Dick Vitale was calling it instead of the ACC tournament - until last year this was the only time I could ever remember Vitale not doing the ACC tournament when it was on ESPN.

1985 and 1996 were the two best years in the Big East. I was too young to remember '85 but I do know '96 as incredible. I can still recall watching this game live! The Villanova phone card scandal was the talk of the tournament. 1996 in general was an awesome year for college hoops give how good UK and UMass were. The star power across the country was off the charts! Kittles at 'Nova, Iverson at Georgetown, Wallace at Syracuse and Allen at UConn made for a great year in the BE. Croshere and Garrity were also really good players at that time.

tuowl05 1996 is my favorite year ever in college hoops with 1999 behind it.... this game hurts me to this day!! isn't it crazy with all the great teams in the big east that year who thought Syracuse would make it to the final... that was the last good year for my hoyas. I was sad Allan left. the phone card scandal 😂😂😂I forgotten all about that.

Felipe Lopez , Dan Hurley , and Adrian Griffin were pretty good big East players to add to ur list. God Shammgod was a freshman at Providence also. Ur list has the cream , just showing how deep and fun big East was and college hoops around and in 1996 in general . Plus I'm a diehard Umass fan and that was as good as it got for us , this yr and the Lou Roe, Camby, Calipari yrs anyways..

1984-1985 was THE best year for the Big East by far. Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin (2 of the 20 greatest college basketball players of all time), and Pearl Washington.
Heck, three teams went to the final four in 1985 (Georgetown, St. John’s, and Villanova) and Boston College almost got there too.
That’s total domination of college basketball.

Big East Basketball was some of my greatest moments growing as a kid and teenager. I was too young for the 80s, but mainly remember the late 90s and the 2000s, where the Big East hit another great era of success.
Im glad it's still going strong today, but Syracuse and Pitt were two teams that gave the Big East a lot of good memories in this tournament, along with others like UCONN, Georgetown, St. John's, and others. I'm glad UCONN went back to the Big East, I wish Syracuse and Pitt never left the Big East. I know why they left, but it sucked because the ACC is good in basketball, but there's just something about the Big East that I will always treasure and some of my best moments for Pitt basketball were memories of the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden. From playing UCONN in three straight Big East Tournament Championships to 02-04, but I would undoubtedly the best Big East I've ever seen in this tournament, was the 6OT marathon between UCONN and Syracuse from 2009.

Victor Page. Still the only player to be MVP of the Big East Tourney on a Losing Team.....Lit Ray Allen up and contained him to 18 pts. Ray still fucking killed us with that bs shot....But the greats get that roll. Classic, just hurt being on the losing side

I think Allen Iverson said that he was his toughest defender he ever faced (if I'm remember correctly). It's crazy how Iverson scored only 13 points in that game.

    • @DopeComedian

lol Iverson just missed shots he made countless times.
People confuse "good defense" with shots just not falling.
Ricky Moore did play good this game though.

I know the Big Ten is going to have their tournament in MSG in 2018, but it's never going to be like this again, even with the re-tooled Big East. The Big Ten should always have their tournaments in Indianapolis or Chicago. Even this year in DC was strange.

Still mad at how hard the Hoyas sold this game. Could’ve made the Final Four because they likely avoid UMass in the elite eight.
