Those UNLV teams in '90 and '91 were not only ridiculously talented and well coached, the players were all very unselfish. Nobody cared who got the points, as long as the team won.
The decibel level in Barnhill Arena was ear-splitting back in those days. Never heard it that loud in Walton Arena. When Jim Robken and the Razorback Band would crank up William Tell Overture, that place would EXPLODE with sound! Those were the days.
This is when coaches had balls. Nobody was taking this late season battle on enemy courts like UNLV. 40 Minutes of hell was legit and to play them on the road back then was bananas.
LOL. I fondly remember a call-in radio show after this game and someone mentioned "UNLV, the best team money can BUY" and he meant that literally. UNLV probably paid dearly to have that team...
I was there. Camped out all week to get first row student section seats. It was a frenzy, with AR students nearly breaking the doors down before they opened them. Stupendous talent on both teams. Our Razorbacks didn't win, but we left feeling we had seen one of the greatest games ever.
I was student this game. 2nd row mid court. I was in awe when LV dancers walked out on court. Larry J. was a bad dude. Mayberry made it a game 2nd half. Nolan is still the man and he never cheated.
I brought it from a guy online, who used to have an ioffer.com account. But, now you have to e-mail him the games you want. He charges about $6-$8 per game, but $2-$3 per shipping.
This team was crazy!! Larry Johnson, Greg Anthony, Stacey Augmon, Anderson Hunt, etc. How Duke beat them still amazes me, especially after the previous year's Nat Championship Game.
Holy Spirit Filled Because DUKE was and still is a basketball program at that time DUKE had been in 5 NC2A basketball final 4 and by and by 1992 ended up being in 5 straight final 4 and 6 years out of 7 with 2 national titles, UNLV just had a string of 2 good seasons around that time play in a very conference the BIG West they didn't to much have to do anything but prepare for the major teams they were playing time to time When DUKE in the ACC battles with North Carolina, Maryland, Clemson, NC STATE, Georgia TECH, etc.
@@elhombrenegro4999 No disrespect, but actually, it was 7 Final Fours in 9 years, 4 Championship Games in 5 years, 5 Championship Games in 9 years, and 2 National Championships, starting in '86. The greatest run ever in college basketball post UCLA era(may be even more impressive of a feat since UCLA always got ALL the best talent, while post UCLA run, there has been far more notoriety for teams across the nation, therefore a greater degree of parity). Major Duke fan here. I agree with your assessment as well. It's just that IMO, that UNLV squad was one of the best teams ever assembled and, for that, it makes that win for Duke even more impressive.
Holy Spirit Filled None taken that seem to be correcto what you commented just to me it seem that the DUKE program as a whole was a better team at that time with all of their experience being in the Final Four was a better program for the occasion than the UNLV team
@@elhombrenegro4999 yeah I feel you... The only difference though is that UNLV was 1 team that had a two year run, and Duke was a program, with several different team makeups, building excellence year in and year out.
I had a picture (from Sports Illustrated I think) of Augmon's dunk at 49:00 in my school locker. It was taken from under the opposite basket. His arm pit was at rim level, and his finger tips were well over the box on the glass. It's hard to appreciate how high he got in normal speed, but he was way over the rim.
it was an unbelievable dunk, better than Grant Hill's in the NCAA finals tbh.. i remember flipping out in my living room after that dunk. I also remember the sports illustrated article, just fascinating era for college basketball
Another classic cozzman. Arkansas players looked like they didn't know what hit them in the 2nd half. Vegas' chemistry was unbelievable, everyone knew their role & the points could come from anywhere.
This team here is still my favorite even more so than Corliss Williamson and the 94-95 Razorback teams (94 NCAA Champs, 95 Runner-up to UCLA). I sorely miss those baseball passes that Big O would throw down the court like at the 38:30 mark for those fast break points. He would rebound and automatically look down-court for the fast break. The 94 was a better TEAM, but these guys were great individual talents and also an awesome team as well. Just not as deep on the bench as the 94-95 team. Unfortunately they only got as far as the Final Four and never won an NCAA Championship.
Well, I was only about 1-2 years old...haha, but I've heard stories from my uncle, father and brother about these UNLV teams and how great they were. Ever since I've watched the 1991 Final Four film on ESPN in '97, I've always wanted to see games from them. They would DESTROY teams if that team was playing in today's College ball, even today's NBA ball.
They were great but i could give you problably about 5 teams since that wouldve beaten them. The 91 team was more dominant but the 90 team was deeper which is what lead to them getting beat by Duke in 91. They basically went 6 maybe 7 deep but thats about it.
This UNLV club had a margin of victory at 26.7 ppg. Let that sink into your brain. This team, on average, beat people by almost 30 points...EVERY game. Duke should thank whatever god they worship, for having given this team it's only loss in this season.
For younger fans that missed this era, Tarks UNLV teams were the Showtime Lakers of college basketball. UNLV games at the Shark Tank in Vegas were star studded events. Never been anything like it since......This was one of the greatest College basketball team in history, along with some John Woodens great UCLA teams.
2:38: "Arkansas had one of the toughest practices we've ever seen?" The day before playing UNLV? No wonder their legs were dead in the second half! Why would you do that?
When I watch Tark talk with Billy in the pre-game, it reminds me of Dr. Tom Osborne. It's about being prepared and playing the best you can. More Than Winning!
This game was showing a glimpse at "future of basketball." Then Fab 5 were High School Srs at this time. Believe all 5 recruits for Mich ranked in top25.
I would like to see some of the games between Bama and Arkansas from that time period. Grueling games with Wimp Sanderson and Nolan Richardson dueling from the coach's boxes. Arkansas with the players you see here. Alabama with "Big Shot Bob" Robert Horry, Latrell Spreewell, David Benoit, Marcus Webb, Melvin Cheatum, James "Hollywood" Robinson, Jason Caffey, Eric Washington... all future pros.
+Ken Perk It was actually Princeton who had the "Grind to to a Hault system, and from a 'balls to the walls' approach it was Loyalo Marymount. Richardson juust changed up defenses in that 40 minutes of bullshit
no doubt!!!! great players and ironically duke was playing lsu next that day on cbs. everyone thought that arkansas was the only team that could possibly beat vegas.
UP UNTIL THE HIGH SCHOOL TO PROS ERA .. COLLEGE BASKETBALL 🏀 HAD CONSISTENT HIGH LEVEL GAMES EVERY YEAR .. IT MADE THE GAME MUCH BETTER .. THIS ONE WAS ONE OF THE ALL-TIME GREATS ..
In the 1990 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament - UNLV's 103-73 win over Duke marked the first, (and to date, only), time in the history of the tournament that at least 100 points were scored in the championship game. UNLV’s 571 points over six games set the record for most points scored by a single team in any one year of the tournament. UNLV is the only team in tournament history to average more than 95 points per game. In six tournament games, they won three by exactly 30 points, while scoring more than 100 points in each 30-point victory. UNLV’s 30-point margin of victory in the championship game is also a tournament record. To date, UNLV remains the last team from a non-power conference (AAC, ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, and SEC) to win the national championship; and the only one since 1977. The championship game was UNLV’s eleventh-consecutive win. They would eventually run the win streak to an astounding 45 games. That is the fourth-longest win streak in NCAA Division 1 basketball history, and the longest win streak since the longest one ever (by UCLA), ended in 1974. And AFTER their championship season, their cumulative record the NEXT two seasons was 61-3. That’s the third-highest winning percentage for any Division 1 college basketball team over two consecutive seasons, since the start of the 1973 season. Jerry Tarkanian’s last six years at UNLV. How’s this for a six-year-run!? In 1986-87 UNLV lost ONE game (by one point) in the regular season, went to The Final Four, lost to the eventual national champion in an extremely close game, and finished the season 37-2. The next two seasons they “only” went 28-6 and 29-8, but made it to the second-round and the Elite Eight respectively in the championship tournament. The next year, 1989-90, they were national champions (and set SEVEN records in the tournament; all of which still stand….to this day). The next year, (the third consecutive year they were a number-1 seed in March Madness), the ONLY game they lost….was the national semi-final, by two points to the eventual champion, and they went 34-1. The following year, they went 26-2. Pretty damn good run for six straight years !

This two best teams of Modern Era of College Basketball.
Golden Era/ I mean the absolute PEAK of College Basketball.
I was 13 and these are yrs I fell in love with College Hoops and KU hoops.
Finally found it. Been looking for this game for years
Those UNLV teams in '90 and '91 were not only ridiculously talented and well coached, the players were all very unselfish. Nobody cared who got the points, as long as the team won.
Generation X
The way the played defense was ridiculous. The scary thing is that Ed O’bannon and Darrin Hancock should have been on this team.
I so miss big time college basketball!
The decibel level in Barnhill Arena was ear-splitting back in those days. Never heard it that loud in Walton Arena. When Jim Robken and the Razorback Band would crank up William Tell Overture, that place would EXPLODE with sound! Those were the days.
I think that Tuesday, Feb 8th, 2022 might have been the loudest it's ever been on the Hill.
This is when coaches had balls. Nobody was taking this late season battle on enemy courts like UNLV. 40 Minutes of hell was legit and to play them on the road back then was bananas.
These were my boys. 💯
One of the greatest college teams of all time.
UnLv Runnin Rebels. 🏀
The apex of College Hoops.
Walter Payton was at the game!
Thanks for posting, been looking for this for years!
2nd Half: Steal. Pass. Basket. Johnson lay-in. Ackles slam. Johnson follow. Johnson lay-in. Augmon follow. Augmon bank. Augmon baseline. Augmon drive. Augmon. Augmon. Augmon.
LOL. I fondly remember a call-in radio show after this game and someone mentioned "UNLV, the best team money can BUY" and he meant that literally. UNLV probably paid dearly to have that team...
Just great memories. Remember watching these games with my dad.
When the Razorbacks were a legitimate powerful
Now we back #8 in the country
@@merk8504 lol we're a joke these days. Not even close to this team or the 94 Championship team. Not even close.
@@MidnightVenturesthat’s okay bc we got a hungry coach cal now
I was there. Camped out all week to get first row student section seats. It was a frenzy, with AR students nearly breaking the doors down before they opened them. Stupendous talent on both teams. Our Razorbacks didn't win, but we left feeling we had seen one of the greatest games ever.
I was a season ticket holder from 87 - 94 never missed a home game it was an exciting time to be a UNLV fan. 😊
This Era had so much to look forward to from a fans perspective. This and the Houston vs Louisville match up in the final 4 just stick in my mind.
Fun times to be a Razorback fan
I remember the hype surrounding this game.
I was student this game. 2nd row mid court. I was in awe when LV dancers walked out on court. Larry J. was a bad dude. Mayberry made it a game 2nd half. Nolan is still the man and he never cheated.
That Todd day punch 😂
I brought it from a guy online, who used to have an ioffer.com account. But, now you have to e-mail him the games you want. He charges about $6-$8 per game, but $2-$3 per shipping.
Arkansas was a damn good team themselves with MayDay an UNLV still made them look silly in their house
Money.
The greatest era of college basketball…. So glad I got to witness it while it happened
The 38:30 pass is ridiculous! Throws that on a rope.
17:10, I always hated when Bill Packer would say something that the video reply completely contradicted.
This is the hay-day of college basketball. I was at LSU with Shaq and we LIVED college basketball
thanks...I have been looking for this for a long time!! Almost called CBS
I remember as a kid the build-up for this game was crazy
This game was showing a glimpse at "future of basketball."
Then Fab 5 were High School Srs at this time.
Believe all 5 recruits for Mich ranked in top25.
Watch 1:05:46 Larry Johnson on the fast break.Changed the game! Thats when they ran them off their own court. ;)
These were the days if college basketball. It’s incredible how far UNLV basketball fell not that many years after this game .
I remember having this game taped on my old VHS cassette and it is still the most borrowed item i have possessed in my life.
Thanks for the upload....nice and clear!!
UNLV, The Best Show in Town!!! That town is the entertainment Capital of the Earth, bar none !!!
Yeah, Alabama brought Loyola's offense to a halt but failed to take advantage of some gimme baskets and lost.
ahh the ol"SouthWestern Conference
SWAC
The hogs football and basketball haven’t quite been the same since leaving the SWC
Anybody in 2020?!!
Born and raised in Vegas April 3rd 2020
Watching
Corona virus here
2022 here. Don't ask.
Larry Johnson was zion before zion
Daaaaamn 4:30 Who was trimming up nolan Richardson's mustache back then? Ray Charles?
I remeber this barn burner big time college game
Barnhill Arena. Classic
no doubt!!!! great players and ironically duke was playing lsu next that day on cbs. everyone thought that arkansas was the only team that could possibly beat vegas.
I'm a longtime Jayhawks fan but UNLV uni's 1989-91 were the shit to this very day!
Especially their home whites.
Then their cool warm ups?
UP UNTIL THE HIGH SCHOOL TO PROS ERA .. COLLEGE BASKETBALL 🏀 HAD CONSISTENT HIGH LEVEL GAMES EVERY YEAR .. IT MADE THE GAME MUCH BETTER .. THIS ONE WAS ONE OF THE ALL-TIME GREATS ..
When you see games like these you can't convince me today's game is better.
WPS! Great memories! Love those Hogs! Always have, always will!!!!! 🐗🐗🐗❤️❤️❤️
In the 1990 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament -
UNLV's 103-73 win over Duke marked the first, (and to date, only), time in the history of the tournament that at least 100 points were scored in the championship game.
CLASSIC GAME RIGHT HERE!!
Arkansas should have invested in a weight room.
i know it's hard to tell, i'm just curious what the result would be between this unlv team and let's say 2018 ncaa kentucky game...
