Transformers Trade Gone Wrong! Collector Wants $7,000, Ryan Thinks They're Worth $1,500
In this episode of the Toy Federation TH-cam channel, we dive into the world of vintage Transformers toys! A passionate collector visits the Toy Federation store with a collection of Transformers figures he hopes to trade for a whopping $7,000. But there’s a twist-Ryan, the owner and vintage toy expert, values the collection at only $1,500. This leads to a heated yet respectful negotiation that offers a fascinating look at the art of trading vintage toys.
What’s in the Collection?
The collector’s lot is impressive, with a mix of G1 (Generation 1) Transformers, iconic figures like Optimus Prime and Megatron, and some lesser-known Autobots and Decepticons. While the toys look great at first glance, Ryan quickly notices some issues that impact their value. Missing accessories, wear and tear, and incomplete sets all play a role in his assessment.
The Valuation Process
Ryan breaks down the value of each item, explaining how rarity, condition, and completeness influence his appraisal. For Transformers fans and collectors alike, this segment is an invaluable lesson in understanding the real worth of vintage toys. Whether you’re new to collecting or a seasoned pro, you’ll gain insights into how toy store owners determine value and why emotional attachment doesn’t always translate to higher prices.
Tense Negotiations
The discussion heats up as the collector defends his asking price, citing recent online sales and his personal investment in the toys. Ryan counters with cold, hard facts, showing comparable sales and emphasizing the realities of retail pricing. Will they find common ground, or will the deal fall through?
Educational and Entertaining
This episode isn’t just about the trade-it’s a deep dive into the fascinating world of Transformers collecting. Ryan shares tips on:

Were we fair with this trade?
Ha to ask the question...
I don't think SO!!! but as long as you do... 🤣
MORE than fair. Give that Patterson Batflick a try. I was forced to watch it one time. I actually liked it way more than I thought I was going to.
I think more than fair; even a bit too much. I don't know how he got 7k. The price market off e-bay is so volatile and fluctuates each month. I think he took the highest sales of each item that he saw off e-bay. it's the only thing that could account the 7k range.
yup
I will never understand after all of the years of Ebay, how people do not understand the difference between listed vs. sold prices.
I collect comics and it's the same there. People always try to price stuff of of listings, not sold prices.
it will eventually sell. do you not understand that? to put it in perspective. i literally sold a pair of "cicada wings" for .99 cents on ebay. took 7 weeks; but it sold
I've seen some beat to hell vintage toys being listed at prices that mint condition ones sell for. People are insane.
@@ChickenMcThicckenlol did you really?
@@ChickenMcThiccken selling something ridiculous for .99 cent doesn't mean something will eventually sell for a high price.
This is why I changed my retail store business plan. All that inventory sitting on shelves growing mold. It's more like a collection than a business. I only offer walk in sellers 30% of ebay sold because I don't need their poorly chosen purchases sitting on my shelves for years. Now when I buy items I put a notice on social media to the locals letting them know they have a week to come in and buy or the items go on ebay auction no reserve starting at 25% above what I paid. Now my store has amazing turnover and I don't have to worry about paying the rent.
I don't know how this video reached me, I did read business plan, made sense... You have to move product, you figure it out.
Maybe the owner should read this comment because he sitting on so much inventory aint nobody buying. He has to pay out of pocket for this overhead
@@godlike_gaming5636 I agree, you have to move product..its a business. The amount of money you need to make,to actually pay yourself is an expensive hobby then, if all you do is pay.
@@godlike_gaming5636 there is a reason Macy's puts everything on sale when it sits too long. I let the collector in me get in the way of the business owner. I made ok money before but it has increased greatly moving product consistently even if its for a lesser amount sometimes
I always think about all the boxes of stuff in the back rooms that just sit because most stores don't see more than 50 people a day and how many actually make a purchase enough to keep the cycle going befor it becomes hoarding. You sound like you've gotten the cycle flowing good to avoid build up 🤘
If customers want top dollar for their stuff, then they need to create an ebay account and sell it themselves. Period.
And take 15 % selling fees more if you promote it and shipping cost that being said expecting 7k instead of a 700 offer is ludicrous one way or the other(still watching video)
@@HeathLawrence-o6h Plus income tax (potentially). But really what you are trying to do is cut out the most middlemen that stand between you and the sucker, er, customer who wants to buy your stuff. Ebay would be the middleman in that case.
Yeah cause these guys are the store willmundercut you then over sale it by like 50%
@@HeathLawrence-o6h 15 now? thought it was 10
@RonnieWilkerson-ku5gg someone has to pay rent, electric bill
I love your content and the fact that I was born deaf and can follow along to the subtitles and still enjoy the nostalgia (im 47) is fantastic.
I look at this video and all I can think is “ I have to stop wasting my money and buying toys”.
Agreed. Only buy the handful that you truly love and wouldn't want to sell anyway. Buy them loose and display them proudly. Collecting too many packaged figures looks tacky.
It’s a mugshot game, and plenty of people have been taken by this nonsense….
Yeah I learned with getting back into yugioh as an adult, haven't had my cards in 17 years, a lot has changed. Link monsters, Xyz monsters, cards that are spells AND monster cards combined..I remember synchro summons from GX but never got into it further than the original stuff mostly as a kid, the game is just wild now, and I learned quick after wasting $122 on a 25th anniversary LOB booster box that I should just get the specific cards I want, and forget 99% of the sets. Legendary decks 1 & 2, and that white box with the 3 god cards on it are the 3 sets that are worth it imo right now for the nostalgia, beyond that I've just gotten individual or smaller set combos of cards and I've saved PLENTY.
If you love it and it brings you happiness and your bills are paid it's not a waste.
@@paulie2burgers976 if you collect compulsively, then yes it is. it is better to just have the handful that bring you true joy rather than "chase the dragon" and collect all of them.
I don’t sell to dealers because I know I lose 50% off the top. You need to know how the system works. Don’t go to retail, and expect them to give you retail…come on.
This system has a huge place in the collection and reselling market...about 50% off all collectors use it. you get to move a lot of items all at once. every one knows selling your stuff one by one takes months and then you still sit on 1/3 or give it away for nothing. This model and business is for Fast Cash is really needed....or to trade in the store to Get New stuff you don't have the extra cash for. Its so widely used and popular because people are instant self gratification Creatures.
He payes rent lights employees and offers 50ish percent. Totally fair. Best I ever get flipping in retail stores are my comics ans albums . I gt 60% ebay sold because I have been going to them for years and years. Worth it because there are never condition scammers
You sell to a dealer when you're lazy, totally ignorant of business, don't care about getting the most money or want a quick sale.
He is a dealer and wholesaler not a collector. Just like a pawn shop they will never pay retail price. They need to make money.
@@playmorecollectibles6144 Try years! I am a part time toy retailer, but before I was I had a rather large personal collection. After becoming a dealer and setting up my business, I decided I wanted to trim the fat on my personal toy and comic book collection. I was just collecting stuff that I would never display. As a dealer, it became obvious much of it would never have great value and I also would never have all the room necessary to display it. So if it wasn't rare, wasn't ever going to be high value, and was never going to be displayed, why did I have it? Just to satisfy my OCD.
Even with me being a toy dealer and just funneling my personal collection into my own business along with other collections I buy and new product I sell, I am 5 years into the downsizing process and I still don't see the end.
There are times I consider offloading everything in my PC that I don't want to another dealer, just to clear things up. But then I think nah, that's giving away money. And I just keep funneling it through my business to fill any extra capacity we have. Even having this kind of outlet, it is a slow process. So I can certainly see the appeal of selling to dealers.
When the space is more valuable than the value you loose selling to a dealer, it makes sense to sell to a dealer.
Ryan is too nice. Wish people understood the difference between eBay asking vs sold. Plus how much eBay takes when you sell something
It'll always be the way, people just don't get it.
Sometimes the seller might actuall have half a clue but their item is used/not in the greatest condition & they are after the mint/pristine price. They just don't take condition into account at all.
Yes I love new ebayers they sell stuff for low then eBay takes more then they anticipate
Yep ebay takes like 20% fee?
@@herbbot8241 depends on the category of item i think
Sadly, people like us who grew up with this toys and we have a sentimental value towards this plastic figures, we are getting older and are passing away. I know I will not make my money back on trying to compete my collection but I will always have the satisfaction that I grew up in the era of the best toys of the 80s.
Poor guy told his girl he was rich😂 I’m feeling the second hand embarrassment
Lol she probably dumped him after
She made him sell it…inside he😢🥹😔☹️
If a man takes his woman to a toy store to sell his collectibles. She really cares about him because he can't afford to pay bills, probably lost his job.
She’s there to see how much money he wasted on his get rich quick passion project and to see the reality of the fact that “collecting is not a way to get rich” if collecting was such a goldmine you would see rich people putting their savings into running businesses like this. Jeff Bezos is not interested in collectors markets because it’s a nickel and dime industry only profitable for the incredibly small amount of people that dedicate their lives to it.
@@adamantium_1or she hates his collection and is there to make sure it's gone

Thank you for restoring the format. As a 60 year old collector this was/is my new Saturday morning cartoons. I get lost, relaxed, entertained, and in a good mood after.
"If you're not in a hurry you don't have to sell it to me" absolutely nailed it. If you want top dollar sell individual pieces on your own. If you wanna move a lot of stuff really quick sell it as a lot or sell it to a store but know you are essentially "paying a premium" (i.e. losing profit) for the convenience of moving a whole bunch at once.
The mask makes me think they might be stolen
He needs to start selling all those toys in shop before running out of space 😂😂
Often times the items that sell for top dollar that people hear about are in mint. Nothing broken, scratched, smuged, marked on, carved on, or faded. Decals intact. All the parts. Everything functional. In the box with all the original packing material and paperwork that came with it. Everything that was in the box when originally opened.
to everyone:
nobody is going to get rich in the toy business, if its not fun anymore, you are in the wrong hobby-
Exactly I once thought I could have a lot of money to get another piece but I got ripped of and I felt bad for a couple of years (it was g1 transformers) luckily I was able to redo my collection but learned it the hard way.
Hasbro, spin master and others. " hold our beer"

I forgot to mention re-issues in my initial post. They aren't helping his matters either.
Yrs ofc
Wow. I know nothing about toys. But I can appreciate how much knowledge it probably requires to pick up a random toy from the 90s a customer brings in, and to be able to identify each piece and its condition
If that was my store I would have walked away from that deal, in this climate its going to be hard to recoup that back
But it isn't your store tough guy.
Me and my father use to go to auctions, flea markets, yard sales, etc.. in the early 90s and had so much fun. Early days of ebay were amazing. Collected and restored cuckoo clocks mainly and other antiques as well. The internet honestly is now and was a double edged sword.
No you didn't
@maccusmc ?
@maccusmc, I'm pretty sure we did, unless my memories of growing up are a lie 😂
@@iTried-cr4to they are. You're in the matrix. You're welcome
I actually learned the difference between buying retail and re-selling thanks to comic books years ago. Back in the day when I'd go to comic stores and they'd say, "Okay, so I can SELL this comic for $xxx, but I'll BUY it off you for $xx. It's just like those episodes of Pawn Stars where they look at the wide-eyed person coming in with their super-duper high-valued item and thinking that they're gonna get top dollar, and Rick Harrison shuts them down with the reality of, "I'm going to have to clean it up, mount it, promote it, and then wait for that specific buyer who is looking for 'X' to come into the store and buy it, so the best I can do is half what you're asking for it." Retail stores have bills too, so thinking you're sitting on a gold mine...you'll be in for a reality check fast.
Its all about nostalgia and memories mostly. Making money is a lucky chance of small value and collectors value person is hard to find.
I was into this for about a decade. Needless to say, I sold everything and got out on top. I'd never get back into this kind of thing these days considering on how insane the whole vintage market has become.
Fortnite Lego Sets is the way to go
Pokemon is where the money is. Follow the trail
Vintages toys are a market like anything else, it goes up & down. If you buy vintage toys as an investment, it's just as risky as anything else. I just buy toys for fun and get things I enjoy. I sell off the stuff I really don't like or need and just hold onto what makes me happy.
Sure, just like every gambler says “glad I made all my money and got out on top” 🤭🧢
Remember that time dude came in with those Transformers? "But then he said $6000 or $7000!!!" 🤣😂.
Shop owner has far more patience than I do. After about 5 minutes I would have said $1500 is my offer, take it or leave it.
Because the Seller bought High , doesn't mean that the Buyer has to too
I see this scenario in cards all the time. People think asking price on Ebay is a comp. They don't know they have to look at sold items not asking price
yep I collect vintage Yugioh and people are always trying to overcharge by 20%-30%
We all want top dollar for our stuff, but only a few are willing to do the grunt work to make that top dollar.
Indeed they all check ebay price and ask for ebay price even if its missing pieces
Reminds me of my pawnshop days. Because an item is someone's passion they think that translates to dollars.
Especially before the internet, some collectibles would sit on a shelf for years waiting for the person who wanted it to find it. Even on ebay or some other site you might have to wait a long time to find someone willing to buy at the price it's "supposed" to be. I remember at the comics shop I used to go as a kid the same $50-$100 vintage comics would be hanging from the the wall every week. No one ever bought them.
I must agree. Some EBay asking price doesn't mean shit. There's always someone who thinks thier shit is made of gold. 😂

This is why i stopped selling toys. Negotiating is so time consuming and if they dont result in a sale it ends up being a huge waste of time. How are they going to make a profit?! lol
Idk how this guy got a numbe of 6 or 7k and even if it was worth that - You will get 3k for it on a good day.
People who 'collect' figures for 'value' aka money are 'dumb' in the first place. (I'm a collector before you accuse me of anything lol)
You should collect and invest your money in something else if you 'want to make money'. Not going to happen with Toys.
If you REALLY wanna 'make' Money - You buy figures from certain brands.
Like Star Wars Hot Toys/Sideshow, limited stuff 'from' or 'Made in Japan' - In my experience you can double or tripple your money or at least get your money 'back'.
But thinking your Star Wars Black Series or Marvel Legends is going to bring you THOUSANDS of Dollars is delusional.
Even in 30+ years when it could be considered 'retro' NOBODY is going to be interested and those who are, are interested in figures with a 'limited' run, 'variations' or 'limited editions'
There are only a few hardcore collectors on this world - Like Ryan running Toy Federation - who are willing to pay INSANE amount of money for certain pieces.
I make a lot of money and i can spend a lot money on stuff i 'don't need' but i would NEVER pay $500, $600 or $1000 for a figure, or comic, just because i had it as a child or because it's 'rare'.
I collect stuff because i like the art, or the movie, game, idea or whatever behind it.
The figures i 'had as a child' are just a small percentage of what i collect or enjoy.
Because i'm a 90's kid I'm all over the Star Wars Power of the Force 2 line and they are like 5bucks a piece, in box/on card.
And thats how its going to be with every 'figure' line since the 00's - 5Bucks a piece.
Randomly got this recommended, always cool to see resale shops of all sorts whether for pawn, collectibles, jewelry etc. things people value and spend money on and collect is always interesting to me, tools even. The free market is a wonderful thing.
the 80s and 90s kids already have the whole collection. None of the new generations care about vintage toys
I totally agree with you. The Smartphones made it worse where kids now don’t play with toys like I did as a millennial growing up as an early 80s baby, late 80s kids, 90s kid. I remember playing with my box of Hotwheels, action figures on the ground in the den or in the backyard during the weekends making sound effects. Those times are gone when it comes to kids in this generation. This is probably another reason why Toys R Us as closed because the decline of kids playing with toys have gone down because of gaming, gaming, movies on tablets and smartphones have gone up for kids entertainment. In the early 90s, I remember coming home from school, did my homework before the cartoons came on and I was always excited to watch Animaniacs, Tiny toon adventures, Batman, the animated series and so on then right around 4:30pm 5PM, Married with children would start lol 😂. I love that sitcom and it never gets old.
@@skeletonmandiecastcollectorbecause these toys suck lmao. Legos are universally better than playing with a plastic transformer or doll
Exactly, all this stuff will be worth something in like 10-20 years. As a 32yo who’s bought toys forever I’ve noticed in the 2010 the golden age of toys died. Less 3.75 and zero gi joes. It was til late 2010’s I saw the 3.75 come back slightly.
Yeah sold my old ones and replaced them with newer versions thats more toon accurate.. makes them look like it just came outta the tv screen which what thats really appeals to me. Plus theyre aint big and wont eat much space.
Better yet 80s kids need to pay medical bills now. My childhood toy makes me happy but my meds keep me alive.
I am a collector and I am addicted. This is the simple truth. I better quit because spending money in toys is not a decent thing for me as an adult. My father at 47 didn’t buy toys except for kids. My money could go in helping people
I wish I was there for all that transformers goodness!
Ugh the things I would do for a thrilling 30’s metroplex! Another great episode!
Time stamp 12:08 a collectors pet peeve, kicks his box multiple times to talk about the price of the transformer…
What a rude Mfr . I would NEVER SELL TO THESE PEOPLE ....
yeah that pissed me off too. i've watched a bunch of this channel. it's entertaining but the owner is an egotistical autistic tool
Yeah, that was hard to watch.
Metro went for $519.95 NIB on eBay Nov 29th...so I think the store gave a fair $200 offer which roughly would be 50% offer if you take into account ebay fees.
Stores have costs too seller can decide to put on eBay or not.
Everyone's pet peeve. Respect my shiiiat!🤔
$7,000???? WHERE?? 😂😂😂 You guys are always fair and most of all REALISTIC LOL. Love you guys!!
You got to love it man, dude has access to the internet and can look everything you need up and still has no idea how the market, in which he collects, works… you only get top dollar either selling your own online or selling to people who are just collecting and not trying to make profits… the guy has a business to run and most owners do 50% to 75% of value depending on how easily they can sell it… dude just somehow gets to $6000 for that and thought he was gonna walk into a toy store and get that? Complete clown man, worst customers to deal with… the guys looking up prices people are selling them for? This dude just oozes I have no idea what I’m doing or saying
How does a crappy batmobile manufacturing company have not thought through the app to run the crappy thing?!😂❤🦇
keep a old phone with the app
When these people gone realize, stuff only worth what people are willing to pay. You can ask all you want your not going to get it.
My spider senses were tingling. This whole thing was, as the kids say, “very suspect” 😮
What part of it?
Yeah, I get a robber vibe from this masked seller.
I wish i could get people to understand the difference in sold vs for sale. It is insane that people don't recognize this. It is painful.
When you are looking at eBay sold you also have to figure in fees and shipping - and those big items are pricey to ship.
Example - just sold a 1/6 figure for $260
Fees = $42
Shipping = $20
Net = $198
The fees dont change the selling price. Its worth what its worth.
@@Lunarwarrior411 I would have sold that 1/6 figure for $240 if I didn't have to account for fees.
@@Lunarwarrior411 The fees do change the selling price. They're all factored into the selling price.
The fees do not change the overall price the consumer is willing to pay. Even on vintage items jacking the price up to cover your fees makes you uncompetitive with the rest of the selling market
I really enjoyed the format where you guys had the roundtable commentary and cut in between it. Very Comicbook Men, but still, it kicked ass.
Any time a guy rocks up with a Fort Max has to be a good day! Awesome.
People always look at asking prices instead of sold. No where near 7k worth of stuff
Wow where did he get 6k?😮
Guaranteed he was looking at unsold listings, or just the price he paid lol.
My guess is his owed the woman cash and had to pretend like he had $7,000 in toys as collateral.
Freaking Ebay and their BS prices...
@@UncleLesterCam hahaha
Crazy. They should know and value your time!
That was a rough watch… not your fault. The seller was a not so great communicator.
I've been a TF collector for 30yrs and I gotta say his asking price was outrageous for new school stuff. If Fort Max was complete in box I wouldn't let it go for less than 1200
Interesting conversation in the car on the way home 😂
i'm sure it went like "will you please grow up and move out of my house?"
I love when you guys do videos of people bringing toys in.keep doing it.
I think you were fair, very little vintage in that lot.
Great point about the RC remote control vehicles not working if the cell Phone App that it requires is no longer available or doesn't work. Good video, thanks.
Super fair this guy should make him a an eBay and sell it himself with all that energy he has.
I can still remember the day after Christmas went into SAMS club and they had the Flagg marked down to $50.
Can also remember walking into the Sears toy department after Christmas seeing stacks of large Star Wars vehicles, like the Falcon, for 75% off.
Stop kicking toy boxes
i'm a massive Transfromers fan and collector, i think the price you gave is fair!!! love it..
