    My tip for supporting someone with chronic pain- be mentally prepared for your plans to change. That concert you were both looking forward to... it might not be the best thing for your partner to go if they're having a flare and so try not to make them feel even worse about having to cancel plans because of their condition. Try to have some back up plans in mind for those days when things don't quite go their way, this way you both can still have fun doing something together and they don't feel guilty for causing the change in plans

      This is such good advice! As someone with pain and with a husband who also suffers from chronic pain - it hits whenever it wants to and there is NOTHING we can do about it. Being flexible and understanding is the best advice.. we already feel shitty both physically as well as about cancelling plans, and trust me, we know it sucks too. But chronic pain rules the roost and we will have to cancel plans - no matter how excited we might have been about them.
      Having good 'stay-at-home-and-chill' fallback options is *excellent* advice~!

    • @_xMC
      @_xMC ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is such an important point. As someone who struggles with chronic pain, it is quite overwhelming and disappointing when plans have to change, especially when planned well in advance. For me, it sucks to have to plan / tentatively accept plans knowing they may not come to fruition, but I've gotten better about communicating my intentions of doing something and having a backup plan or simply stating that there's the possibility of a last minute change, depending on how I'm feeling. It is hard to express what I'm experiencing and exactly how it is affecting me to others who don't experience chronic pain, but they'll have less of an idea / understanding if I don't try.
      Communication is definitely key here to allow room for support and flexibility when things aren't going so well.

    • @universal_stupidity
      @universal_stupidity ปีที่แล้ว +1

      this is so important, and also true for neurodiverent people who might simply be too burnt out to do plans without having sensory meltdowns (I have chronic pain and I'm autistic). have backup plans, and if they have trouble dealing with routine changes, discuss your backup plans so they will know what's going to happen

I think our world is still a very ablest society and as a chronically ill person I feel like that plays a lot into different types of relationships. I can remember a time where before I was sick I didn't think about the little things that could affect someone with a disability and wish our world would start normalizing differently abled bodies. Meeting new people and explaining my situation isn't what bothers me but the fact that later down the line they get frustrated when I can't go out or have to leave early because of my illness. Of course I feel our world is getting better each day but I feel there is still more we could do.

(I have ankylosing spondylitis, and he always calls it my Ankylosaurus. Haha) One of the things my partner has done that has helped me the most is advocating for me with other people. When friends don't consider my disability when making plans, he will remind them that I can't do that and suggest an alternative or an adaption. I struggle in barstools, so he has requested moving to a different table on my behalf, and has taken some of the crap friends would normally give me for having to change plans. That pay story. When I was younger I was working at a fast food place and we suddenly got a lot of new hires and found out they were all started a couple dollars more than the rest of us were making and the rest of us who had been there over a year complained and everyone who didn’t get promoted from that discussion only got a 15 cent raise 💀

    14:01 Thank you Becky for saying this. This was very commonly said by management at my old job and it made the younger staff very nervous to talk about it. But once we started discussing it, we realized how unevenly we were getting paid, especially the people that had been there longer. It wasn't fair and in our case didn't make us resent each other at all, jut realize the inequity.

    For the chronic pain question: My found family has a lot of chronic pain amongst us. We manage that line of not being overbearing/parent-y by making sure we remind each other “I am here with you for whatever you need” and then I personally tend to tack on “Hey I’m doing X, is there anything I can do for/get you while I’m doing that?” Because then it’s just a favor. Asking what they need, or if you can do a certain thing for them is a good balance usually. I’m also a mom friend though and often give folks the reminders of “Hey, you call your doctor’s office yet after you mentioned it last week? You need that refill soon.”

    As someone with chronic illnesses and pain, I REALLY super duper appreciate this episode.
    I often don’t think about telling the people in my family what is wrong. But they can definitely tell. I appreciate when they ask in a way that isn’t pittying. I need to remember to be open about what I’m experiencing and what my symptoms currently are. But it can be so overwhelming sometimes to express what’s hurting, because the hurting is already so all consuming.
    However, I know it helps. And I appreciate the compassion.
    It helps us chronics a lot when our loved ones actually research and understand better what our conditions are. And it’s helpful to know when they don’t have the capacity to help, or need help.
    Just be open and authentic.
    Don’t know if that made any sense or was coherent 😅🤪
    I appreciate you!!

My partner deals with that and honestly I have a hard time when I feel like I do more than my 50% and it can be overwhelming.
