Is the New BMW M550i as good as the M5 Comp ?

- I was invited to Goodwood Speedweek by BMW UK to experience the brand new 5 Series. I took the 4.4L V8 M550i out on the road and asked a simple question, just how close to the M5 Competition is it. I was then able to take the M5 Comp to the limit on a short blast around Goodwood, hitting 152mph on my first lap. That is how confidence inspiring it is.

As a road car, I think that the "lower class" cars, those that are not of the full fat "M" class or AMG's, are better as road cars. They do 90% of what the "M" car can do, but are 110% better on roads. Though "M" cars are still the better bet for track. Hence I prefer the M340i over an M3 and a X6M50i over a X6M and now this M550i over an M5.
And those new v8 engines with 530 bhp seem to be a peach :-))...
I think the best gesture control would be an arm with hand that comes out of the roof giving to whichever cock driver's just pissed you off, the "bird" :-))...

An m5 competition is super comfortable, still wish it was even stiffer to feel the road better. Best way to save some money and get something close to an M5, is buy a M550i and install a good set of coil overs.
Owed 2023 m550i. Now 2022 M5c. Two very different cars. Ones a gentleman the other a hoodlum! The m550i sport exhaust definitely sounds better as can be switched on with sports/+ mode. Deep roar!

I agree 100% that it is too big, If they had kept it the same dimensions as the E39 5 series I would have bought an M550i also in black with the full chrome pack ! (it looks fabulous), but it is just too long for my liking and like an E65 7 series bus !
Now looking into the 3 series but sadly there is no v8 in the new current 3 series, (an M350i) would have been great !) and I really don't like those drop down kidney grills on the 4 series so the 4 series is off my shopping list...
The upgraded engine with 523 horsepower is the best part about the new M550i xDrive.
Hi Peter, This new BMW M550I is the car I would buy over any Audi RS model and for the simple reason it's a under the radar car and looks like any other 5 series and that's a good thing the only thing I would ask for is the model deletion from the rear boot lid. This is one very fast BMW and at one time had more power than a M5 now that's crazy. Best Wishes Alan B x

Outstanding! It reminded me of a glorious BMW track day in the mid 1980’s at Ingliston outside Edinburgh where my most cherished memory was hooning around with Gerry Marshall in a 7 series barge with an auto box who also told me to “get my toe down” Fabulous! Also went out with a very young Tiff Needell in an M5 who was great but a bit more “corporate” in what I was allowed to do than Gerry😁 Grand finale was a blast as a passenger in the M635CSI which was the dogs of the BMW range at the time. How did I get there? I had just bought a new M535i (not an M5, I couldn’t stretch that far) Your content brought back many happy memories.

I just turned in my leased '18 M550 and have been leasing 550s since 2008 and had a 2004 545 before the 550s. Now, I have a '21 M5 Comp. The M550 is a great car if you not really into super car like performance; it has more than enough power to hold its own. However, there is definitely a big jump in power/performance/handling in the M5. M550 vs M5 really comes down to how you drive. If you are looking for more comfort with performance then M550 is the way to go. If you are looking for super car like performance with some sacrifice in comfort then M5 all the way (the car is a beast). Note: BMW did some tweaking on the '21 M5 suspension (taken from the M8) which, gives it a better ride than Pre-LCI M5s.
hi Pedro. just a quick question. do you think you could help me spread the word about the BMW X2M Mesh Edition. I dont think anyone knows that it is the facelift X2 because if you look closely at the headlights they have a different graphic from the normal X2. please share this. thank you
If you are not going to drive on a track, the M550i is better overall daily driver. It is perfect for 95% of owners. If you think you are Lewis Hamilton, you are going to run your BMW on a track or want the ultimate badass sedan, the M5 has no peer. It is a very personal decision but I think a lot of M5 owners would actually be better served with the M550i.
I drove an m550i Xdruve 2 weeks before buying my m240i xdrive. The m240i was way better. The m550i felt heavy and muted.
LOL funny he said Belgium....My 640D MSport Gran Coupe has been to Belgium numerous times, and every time has been an absolute joy!!
Not full M BMWs have softer suspension thus, they are more comfortable for every day driving.
Second lap would probably melt its brakes. Therefore only one lap)))
Did this car have the Dynamic Handling Package with the active anti-roll stabilizers and rear steering?

@@PetrolPed so it must depend on the market - on bmw .de and .pl and USA you still can configure normal M5 and then add competition package but on bmw .it there only M5c as you said

Bought the M550 as M5 is ridiculously fast! Too fast for a daily driver! Even the M550 at 523hp is too fast for most daily driving! Buy the M550 and add another 20 thousand in options to get the perfect car rather than a base M5 which costs even more.

Considering the price point and the fact that it’s only a small tune away from m5 power makes me think this is the better car than the m5 comp. Sounds more V8 like too! Also do you think this car would need the sports seat or are the comfort seats good enough?
It’s like an S compared to the RS in the Audi range. For many it will be plenty enough car for £30k less 👍 I’ve not tried both seats so can’t really comment 😢

Had a test drive a few days ago... a bit bland and soft. The ride is very similar to my A6 3.0t I have been driving for six yrs. not comoletely sold, but will be considering buying this car.
Morning petrol ped from what i have been watching and hearing about the 550i it is the business big time is there much difference between the 550i and m5 if i had the moneyyes the 550i over the m5 anyday i have been a lover for bmws for years i have owned the v12s v8s v6 and never had any problems wwith them at all not to keen on the shape of the new one like the shape of the old ones anyway be safe untill next time

Great car but hard to justify 70k when you can get an M5 for the same money with a couple of thousand miles on it.

Both cars in my book fit into understated Q cars with deletion of model name. Have to agree a bit on the large size as a daily driver. The two Laps looked very smooth and undramatic, compliments to the car and driver😉

Peter...clearly another good car but I think Joe was even more impressed than you as it is £20.000 less than the M5 yet maybe more accessible on normal roads. I know they drive well but again I struggle with those tired old looks..the car has been with us forever and just looks really out of date now. It all works well and the 5 series is often quoted as being the only car you ever need...but if I put a private plate on it, many would struggle to know if it was new or ten years old and at £80,000, that is a bit of a problem in the styling department! Peter...I’m not gloomy or disapproving of your latest cars...just of manufacturers who should try harder as they did in the 1950/60’s when a new car really was completely new and often a terrific advance on what they had before. How about getting a Porsche Taycan Turbo S and an M5 Competition for a joint test drive/ battle...THAT would be interesting!! Not a new model it’s a facelift. Every car has model life cycle between 6-10 years after 3/4 years they do lil updates in exterior / interior. Be a while still before a brand new 5 series comes out.

Is there really a need for such large cars nowadays, well I'm guessing there must be, give me a little hot hatch everyday over this I'm afraid. The M5 competition was very capable on the track, just need to put it on a hot wash and tumble dry to reduce the dimensions 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Take mate 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🏁

@@PetrolPed The Model Y is actually 2 inches wider than the 5 series....but a bit shorter. So not really that much in it. All Teslas seem to take up a lot of road width.....at least the one's in our village seem to😉

Edit 40ish min later: You shall be forgiven as the merits of the past outweigh this very faux pas...BUT I m unlikely to forgive you for the pain you brought into my life introducing me to the Jannarelly brand! I thought I was set with the Cayman for years to come... it s a joy to drive, kinda practical and therefore easy to justify, even fuel efficient and loses relatively little value....and now amidst of a pandemic I think of 1. how to spec a Jannarelly given the options at hand (you never went through their colour and roof and wheel options I bet...) 2. how can I possibly sell this as a sensible thing to a certain female unit and can I even justify the extra cost to myself whilst 3. omg, I just want one....so yeah shame on you!
