    For the reference for the people outside of New Zealand, Chorus isn't actually an ISP as such. 30 odd years ago our government deregulated and privatized a bunch of things, including the post office which at the time owned all the phone lines. The entire phone side of things became Telecom, which got further split up in the 2000's to a retail arm, a wholesale arm and an infrastructure arm that owned the copper lines etc. Chorus is that infrastructure arm, which was forcibly spun off into a totally separate company as part of the governments Ultra Fast Broadband (UFB) initiative. Chorus (and several other companies) were awarded government contracts to deploy Fibre to most of the country, pretty much any town with more than a few hundred people, but Chorus got the lions share. There are some pretty strict conditions and partial government ownership because the government is paying, but the end result is that New Zealand now has absolutely world class internet. Any ISP can access this fibre and the backends for the same wholesale price, so you can chose the ISP you like, and the government department responsible for consumer affairs deploys speedtesting kit to volunteers houses to keep the ISPs honest. Unlike the situation in most of the US where you are lucky if you have any choice of ISP, or Australia where NBN is a joke, the vast majority of us Kiwis can get uncapped, unlimited, unthrottled fibre for a very reasonable price. I personally pay about USD$35/month for 100 down 20 up fibre, you can get 950/500 plans for as low as USD$50/month now, and deployment has just started on upgrades to the network to allow synchronous 2gb and 4gb plans. I suspect this ad is part of the campaign to try increase the fibre uptake, I think from memory only about 50% of households that can be connected are, and in a few years they are going to start turning pulling out the copper lines in the fully fibred areas so they don't want a huge rush of installs at the end.

      Nice! In the US there are a few smaller local governments that do this "Any ISP can access this fibre and the backends for the same wholesale price, so you can chose the ISP you like", typically called Municipal Fiber. It should be how it is done everywhere but we have massive cable (and fiber) companies, like Comcast and AT&T that own lawmakers and our FCC chairman These companies give them the legislation they want implemented, and get all sorts of things passed to block any attempt to have competition let alone to have that situation where you have a fiber line and can choose your provider.

    *Fiber

  • @MsHojat
    @MsHojat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The ad itself isn't that bad, but it's still misleading. Nobody needs fiber, and those sorts of bugs are more common with internet _outages_ or _extremely_ slow internet such as under 1 megabit, or really usually _even lower_ than that.
    What's more is that *most ads for "fiber" plans are for plans that don't actually even give the user a fiber optic line!* (granted, usually a fiber line to the end user isn't necessary anyway, although it might help in certain cases if they're getting reflection/interference) I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case with this ad as well. All they're doing is updating their further-down infrastructure with fiber, and then if you get a plan above a certain megabit threshold they call it the fiber plan instead, even though literally nothing is different short of the arbitrary imposed speed limit that they have set for your connection.

    • @AndrewGallNZ
      @AndrewGallNZ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      See my post above for full details, but absolutely not the case here and our government is pretty good at smacking down companies that have tried things like that. The single company we have here that ever deployed HFC cable (Vodafone) tried to advertise it's cable plans as 'Fibre X' for awhile because the nodes were fibre fed, but the fair trading / consumer affairs bit of our government stomped on them fairly hard.

    Disgusting, demeaning, degrading and contemptuous towards Chorus's most disadvantaged customers, including some renters, people in multi-unit dwellings and using shared right-of-ways, and the elderly - the former of whom may want fibre but are unable to force their landlords or neighbours to provide consent, and the latter of whom might not prioritize their Internet connection. Shame on Chorus for showing contempt to its own customers, including rural communities. An educational campaign about the forthcoming copper network switchoff would have been more effective. There is no need for this abusive trolling.
