    A couple tips, 1. Always check your towels for bits of plant debris or similar that get stuck in the little fibers that will most definitely scratch your paint 2. IMO # 11 could be loving your car too much. I've heard it and have to agree the addiction to always wanting to be buffing on the paint with a microfiber towel. It gets to the point that it's clean and leave it alone. All that constant buffing and rubbing because you love your car so much is not helping it.

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is a good one! I was going to add that in as a top tip but the video was starting to get too long. Thanks for the tip! I see this happen a lot at car shows where people are dry buffing their car and just scratching it up.

      Great video - I've made all those mistakes in the past but over the years worked it all out. One tip I would add is, keep on top of things to save time! Biggest mistake I used to make is letting things get really dirty before cleaning them, leading to hours and hours of hard work to get them looking good again. Now I spend a bit of time every couple of days on a particular job - like I might spend 15 minutes one day cleaning the glass or vacuuming or treating the leather etc, then the next day do something else for 10 or 15 minutes. Then when it's wash day, all I have to worry about is washing, drying and detailing. Also between washes I use a good detailer spray (along with plenty of microfibre towels) so the grime doesn't build up too much - this way I don't have to wash as much, less sticks to the car because the detailer maintains the wax longer, and when I do wash it's much quicker.

  • @remerson1
    @remerson1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

    Great video Chris! I would like to add using a leaf blower or vacuum in blow mode, to remove the water from the car surface. This reduces the wiping required with any cloth (microfiber is the cloth of Choice!). This is especially beneficial with ceramic, wax or synthetic wax coated cars. Thanks again - keep up the great work!

    Living here in Canada, when it's well below freezing in the middle of the winter, and the car is covered with a thick layer of road salt mixed with dirt, there's no option but to do the drive through car wash. Yes, it's definitely not the best thing for the finish of your vehicle, but it's far better than letting that salty dirt sit on your car for extended periods of time.

      I would love to know what brand was on those labels! Keeping it a secret is one way he probably stays in business, but actually knowing precisely how to get the maximum "clean and shine" would be the legitimate secret, especially if an electric buffer is used. One can really make a goopy mess if wax isn't applied correctly. A buffer can screw up the paint and ruin the finish if one has never used a buffer, esp. with dark colors.. Ask me how I know this LOL! Very little pressure is necessary for outstanding results. And NEVER use a buffer to remove polishing compound!! I don't recommend even using a buffer and I no longer do. The swirl marks that resulted from buffing out the compound were unsightly and really made the truck look like s**t. I've found that cloth diapers make excellent polishing cloths, if you turn them often and use several. My favorite polishing product is "Nu-Finish" and gives great results, when directions are followed.

    • @mrman17
      @mrman17 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with Addictive_LiquoriCe - AmmoNYC has a good video on using clay bars. I've been using them for a couple of years now, and clay is dead simple to use and can make a massive difference to the look and feel of the paint.
      Clay can remove a certain amount of fading (it mainly removes "stuck on" dirt that washing won't remove), and won't save you from having to mop/buff the paint if it's badly faded or has light scratching. It will though, help make it easier to buff and the feel of the final after polishing is like really smooth glass.

    Hi Chris. I always enjoy your very helpful videos. But let's go to #5 in the video. Great advice on what fabrics not to use. However I was told long ago that towels are fine for use on cars as long as they're ALL COTTON. They shouldn't be a blend of cotton and man-made fibers such as rayon, orlon, or nylon as those are actually hard. I remember when my wife bought some new bath towels and the darned things wouldn't dry you (absorb water)., They would just push the water around on your skin. Sure enough, I looked at the label and they were not all cotton. Of course it makes sense that a man-made fiber wouldn't absorb water and may actually scratch paint...

      Jeremy quiring There is a difference between a spray head on a hose, and a power washer. go to your local stall style car wash and place your hand in front of the power rinse (no really dont do this)...a quick swipe can remove skin and muscle tissue. It won't slice your hand off (unless you worked on it for an hour or so), but it can hurt you quite severely. If you don't believe me, either myself or another local ER nurse will be greeting you shortly

    Chris is right on how to clean your car. I see many people cleaning the bottom of their car to the top rubbing the cloth all around their car in cleaning their wheels then dunking it in the water repeating the process going up the side of the car? End result... super scratches. Who washes the windshield after the clean the lower half of their vehicle. Duhh. Don’t use a second bucket. Rinse your cloth off with the hose before you dunk it in the soapy water. For sure you know it’s clean..

    Always remove wristwatches (especially with metal bracelets) & rings before washing, detailing or waxing a car
    .
    Rather than mircofibre on wheel rims, use a soft broad hand brush after applying brake dust remover. Use brush wet with a liberal application of car soap (not dish soap)
    .
    For stubborn road tar deposits, soften the tar with olive oil (yes, the cooking type). Dab & leave for a few minutes. This will soften the tar & allow it to be removed easily
    .
    Whatever you're waxing, you can't beat Collinite - detailing cars for over 30 years, its the best wax there is for shine & longevity

    Chris- I really appreciate your videos, for the information as well as the production quality. Definitely will use some tips from this one to next time I wash my car. I may have missed it, but I didn't see a video from you on products you would recommend to clean rims, particularly ones with a lot of old brake dust built up (or instances where calipers went bad and left a lot behind). I've seen some videos where people swear Purple Power is great for it, and it looks like it makes it easy, but the actual product says not to use it on those areas... do you know if it's actually okay?

      To remove the tree sap, I would use rubbing alcohol (that was the best product in this test: th-cam.com/video/4lHnT7cSgRU/w-d-xo.html), and to clean the wheels I would use some chrome wheel cleaner with a detailing brush, and it should come right off!

    Don't use 2 buckets . . .
    Instead, use a fertilizer hose attachment (that is commonly used for fertilizing gardens).
    You can just spray the soap on and switch to spraying with water.
    It's also easy to rinse the cleaning towel with the hose.

    you do not want to look directly at your car, an eyelash could fall off and scratch it. in the event that an eyelash falls on the car, only pick it up with a clean microfiber towel because the oils in your hand can scratch it.

  • @DoctorBrodski

    You mentioned not using dishwashing liquid or detergent because of the PH balance, but there's an even more serious problem you left out. They are usually formulated to contain sodium (i.e. salt). When those suds get into nooks and crannies and dry out, they will promote rust because of their salt content.

    • @DoctorBrodski
      @DoctorBrodski 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +TheNorthFace715 The chemistry behind it is called electrolysis. Freshwater will eventually cause rust too, but salt water is an electrolyte which conducts ions, causing severe rust. This is why cars in coastal areas around salty air tend to rust at a much faster rate to cars that live inland away from those conditions.

    • @DoctorBrodski
      @DoctorBrodski 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheNorthFace715
      Yes, people with older cars in England have the same problem with road salt. They have to keep them clean when the salt is being used to stop corrosion.
      The cars you saw in Florida were probably were fairly new or at least well-kept older models. And some of them hide their rust fairly well too. You need to get underneath them and look at the door sills, wheel arches, chassis rails and so on. Some of them would have been pretty crusty.
      A 40 year-old classic car from Florida that rarely gets washed would be in a dreadful condition compared to a car of the same age that lived all it's life in the desert in Nevada.

    • @CaptainCocaine

      +Chockarblock I've lived on the east coast most of my life and was surprised at the prevalence of older cars with pristine paint on a business trip to central CA. Low moisture and rarely (if ever) salted roads makes a big difference.

      I don't get the PH balance thing. I mean dish soap should most certainly be mildly alkaline, which is protective against rust. I don't get why they would salt the dish soap either, it doesn't make sense. Hopefully you're not confusing it with Sodium Lauryl Sulfate which IMO does not react electrolytically or easily produce table salt in a reaction.
