    Made this yesterday for a California King bed. Took about 2 hours from start to finish. Looks awesome. I made the width 75", with the top 2x4 77", based on the comment by another user that adding one extra inch over overhang adds to the aesthetic. So thankful for the instructions!

    I just finished this project and can tell you, depending on what supplies you already have, you're definitely going to be spending more than $40. My receipt is as follows:
    -Four 2x4x8 = $14.32 (Later found out, I only needed 3. 🤷‍♂️)
    -Six 1x6x6 = $39.72 (Pine wood was super expensive at $15.37 EACH, so I got TC Whiteboard at $6.62 each. I also increased the height & length by 12 in. so bought 1 extra.)
    -3 packs of Cheesecloth (to apply stain and clear-coating) = $5.94
    -MinWax Stain (Jacobean) QT = $7.98
    -MinWax Polyurethane QT = $11.98
    -2" screws (50 count) = 5.98
    That is a total of $85.39
    And that's not including the $6.94 I spent on a brush and some tack cloths. Plus, I didn't have a sander so I bought a $20 orbital sander from Harbor Freights. Either way, its turned out great and my wife loves it. 👌

    • @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351
      @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hello Bob, there are two issues. First is the height you want. That you can decide depending on the wall it will go against. About the left to right measurement. That depends on what kind of frame you are using. Most have a plate on each side with holes for screws to attach the frame to the headboard. If that is the case, you should make the 1x6's about 3" longer than the center line of those screw holes. Then, the 2x4 that goes across the top will be the same measurement. The normal size for a full is 54". So, your 1x6's and the top 2x4 should be approximately 57". Hope that helps. And, thanks for watching. Dan

    If I am correct, you will need 2 - 2x4x6 boards. The first board cut into 45" each, making 2 - 45" boards ( since 8 ft equals 96", you will have a left over of 6" on the first board). The second 2x4x6 will be cut into 60" for the top detailing of the headboard.
    Lastly, you will need 5 - 1x6x6 boards all cut into 60" long.

    • @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351
      @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351  6 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @patrickfosgate3258
    @patrickfosgate3258 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is this one you make in the video for a queen size bed? Also, looks like I could attach a couple of pieces of leftover 2x4 to the bottom of the back of the legs, flush with the bottom 1x6 for added stability (i.e. less wobbly)?

    • @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351
      @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Patrick. Yes, you can do that. We find that if you are able to attach the bed frame to the legs of the headboard, that step is not normally necessary. You can attach a piece of under layment (thin plywood) to the back of the entire headboard where the 1x6's are. Just make it slightly smaller than the outline. It really firms it up. Thanks for watching. Dan

    I am definitely going to make this for my king size bed. My only question is, you cut two 60" 2x4's for horizontals, but I can only see where you used one. What am I missing?

    • @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351
      @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hello Chuck, There are three 2x4's in this design. Two are for the legs/supports. They are cut to the height that you want the bed to be. The third is for the shelf on the top. It is cut the exact length as the horizontal 1x6's. Hope that answers your question. thx Dan

    • @chucktherunner

    What would the proper width of this headboard need to be to fit a standard, metal KING size bed frame? Or, how long would the 2x6's need to be?

    • @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351
      @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Patrick, a standard king size bed is 76" wide. If you have the bed now, measure the l-r on your bed to be sure. It's hard to describe but the vertical 2x4's should center on the brackets on the bed frame. Then, the 1x6's go to the outside measurement of the 2x4's. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching. Dan

    did you stain with a brush or rag? how many coats? was there a technique used when staining?

    • @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351
      @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, we use an inexpensive brush and almost immediately wipe it off with paper towels. Be sure to use plastic gloves so your hands don't end up stained. With the pine from HD, you need to sand the entire surface you are going to stain. Because, when the trees are cut into boards, the sap dries at the surface. That creates a barrier almost like a clear coat and the stain doesn't go on evenly. So, be sure to lightly sand it to remove that coating. The stain we used is Jacobean from HD. Thanks for watching. And, we appreciate you sharing our videos with friends. Thx Dan

      I would guess 1⅝" screws. The 1x is typically around ¾" thick and the 2x is 1½" thick. So really any screw under 2" would work. Just don't bury the head of the screw . Once it's flush stop.

    • @lukekoesler3383
      @lukekoesler3383 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do not have a king size bed but you want the headboard to stop at the edge of your bed so measure the width and all your horizontal boards will be that length. Your vertical boards can be as tall as you like. I would assume you want the horizontal boards to start about 4" below the top of your matress. You might need one or two pieces more for your horizontal boards then the maker of the video had. Hope this helps.

      Hi Zoe, this one is for a queen. Best to measure the width,(L to R) of your bed to make sure you get it the right measurement. Also, if your bed is on a frame, measure the distance between the holes on the frame where it would attach to the headboard. That measurement will be the middle of the upright leg pieces. Then, add 3" and that will be the L to R measurement for yours. Hope that helps. Thx Dan

    • @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351
      @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tomikah. Well, they vary a bit but usually about 38". the best way is to measure the frame from where the attachment piece is to the same piece on the other size. That would be the measurement of the center of the legs on the headboard. You should be able to figure it from there Or, find someone a bit handy and have them watch the video and then measure your bed frames. Hope that helps. Good luck. Dan

    • @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351

      Hi Kelly, Well it depends on the bed base. Most bases have a plate at the end for screws to attach it. It's hard for me to advise without knowing what your's has. We appreciate you watching and commenting.

      Also, using a good wood glue helps as well. Just make sure to wipe off any that squishes out with a wet towel before it dries. If you don't, the stain will not color that area.

    • @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351
      @vintagerevivalshomegardend2351  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello again, I used 2.5 inch drywall screws to attach the top. Be sure to drill pilot holes to prevent the screws from breaking. I use #8 ones because they are a bit thicker and less likely to break. Hope that helps . An additional step you can do if you want is to add a piece of door skin to the back to make it look a bit more finished.

      Hello 444, You can do that several different ways. On this one, we use regular drywall screws and go down into the 2x4's. You could use the pocket hole method as well. I guess it depends on what tools you have handy. Hope this helps. Dan
