I did this for my last computer desk and it was honestly not worth it. It looked great at first, but after about two years the pine did not hold up at all and it looked pretty bad. I replaced it with an acacia wood butcher block countertop. It did feel a bit like "cheating" to buy something premade, but it was less than half the price of buying a similar amount of hardwood and doing another glue up. Plus all the time it saved me.
Really? Sad to hear that Taylor. I have quite the opposite experience actually. I'm still using this table as we speak, 3 years later and it still feels and looks the same. It's holding up great honestly. I'm glad you're happy with your new table though. There's no such thing as cheating in making furniture, it's about doing what makes sense to you. There's no point building a table from scratch if you're not enjoying it, unless you want a very specific custom design of course. Sounds to me like you made the right decision! Thanks again for watching and sharing your experience!
It turned out very nice. I love the depth of color on it. Been watching many how to videos on desk tops but by far this is the best one I have seen. I have a small pile of "cheap" lumber that I want to utilize and make a computer desk out of. Will be using a number of the techniques you shown. Thanks for posting.

Personally would have used pocket holes along side wood glue. Would have helped true up the boards to one another and straightened some stubborn boards out. Also alternate your clamps on both sides of the workpiece when glueing up, tightening some more then others you can bring some boards out of warp.

Your table looks beautiful, I'm thinking about making one like that for myself, but I think I'll do the Shou Sugi Ban technique to give it this effect.

Honestly, this is great. You spent a lot of time making the table look really good at the end. It's a really rich look, like chocolate or coffee. I love it. Definitely a statement piece in a room. I think people would buy furniture in this style. Some basic end tables, or living room tables. Or desks. Maybe a bed headboard. You should try selling a few :) The only thing that would make this build better is incorporating the computer into the bottom of the desk. I'd also say Router/modem, and power bars. When I built my desk, I was surprised that with just a bit of extra wood, and a few extra hours into it, I could hide everything inside the desk. It cleaned up the room massively. Depending on how your house is setup, I would recommend this if you kind of have everything in the same area around the desk. Really can tidy things up. The only other tool I would recommend that you could get, that would make part of this a lot easier for you is a hand plane. You use it in place of the sander, and it'll help you get a nice flat surface much quicker. And if you can sharpen it well, smooth :)
Wow, thank you soo much my friend! What awesome feedback! Yeah I’ve been thinking about selling furniture once I’m done with the ones we want for our place 😄 Incorporating the computer/router/cable management etc. has definitely been on my mind! Great ideas. A tidy work space and cable management is so satisfying! A hand planer would be awesome, I can imagine that being really handy and make the process a lot faster! Thanks a ton again for the kind feedback and for watching! 🙏
Thank you Liam! The keyboard is a “Logitech MX keys” and the mousepad I found on Amazon if I’m not mistaken. I’m pretty sure you should be able to find both in your country 😊 I think there’s a lot of similar mousepads on Amazon at least! Thanks a ton again for watching and commenting! I hope you find them or something similar that fits your setup!
I couldn’t agree more, and thank you! I can’t wait to get my own dedicated space for it! But for now, I’m grateful for the shared little “workshop” we have available in our apartments basement. Thanks for watching and the kind words!
Amazing result! I'm looking to build my own table and this is just the thing I'm looking for! Also use the same mouse and monitor, so it's truly meant to be :D
What do you think of shorter planks going in the direction of depth rather than length? Some barn doors are built like this in two layers. Length wise is fine but could warp if stored in a humid environment?
Yeah for sure! I think you’d need some kind of reinforcement, like you said in two layers. Otherwise I think the table would lose a lot of strength and integrity. But honestly I’m no expert at all 😄 just my guess! But I’m sure it would look cool, definitely! I would also assume that you’d have less warping if you had two layers in opposite directions, but again I’m no expert! 😄 I’m just a newbie experimenting myself!
Awesome desk dude! Recently built my own and I’m enjoying it more than I thought I would. I used wood for the legs though, I was wondering what you used for yours.
Thanks a lot Chase! It’s truly a satisfying process 🙏🏼 wooden legs would have been our option too if it wasn’t for the perfect timing of getting a pair of adjustable legs from a friend of mine.
Beautiful build. My only tip for people who go w/ pine is to use extra padding between your monitor mount or anything that you plan on clamping to pinewood as it is susceptible to leaving indentations after long period of times being that this isn't as dense as hardwoods.
I'm sure a million people have said this by now, but sand with the grain, especially with the finer sandpaper, the final few sandings, or you will never get rid of scratches.
Thanks Colin, can’t be said enough either way! I learned that the hard way 😄 Thanks again for watching and sharing your tips my friend! Very much appreciated!
Instead of a thousand rolls of sand paper, a simple manual planer would make quick work of those raised edges with almost no saw dust and they are easy to use as well.
That is indeed true, thanks for the suggestion! Would love to own one or more of those one day. As for this time this was the option in hand since we don’t own a hand plainer and the rolls of sandpaper were the only thing we needed to buy. Thanks for watching and interacting, much appreciated 😀
@@byferner I cheated a little after calculating how much the sander etc would cost, so bought a 2m oak worktop and distressed it, varnished it. Looks great on some tressle table legs. When I've more money I might actually buy the tools and do a dining table. Cheers 👍
That's why I use my domini XL XXL to straighten the boards in glueing. So it will hopefully will also help with tabletop twisting. Nice rustic finish ;)
That sounds really convenient! I’d love to try a tool like that when edge gluing boards. Thanks for watching and for leaving some tips in the comments!
Thanks a lot bud! I got the legs from a friend of mine, he’s old work were getting rid of office furniture. I should have included that in the video, sorry about that!
Beautiful table and video, nice to see the learning progress you both went through, instead of the usual professionals doing their best work on TH-cam. If you had the chance to redo this project, what would you do differently?
We really appreciate that John, thank you so much, so glad you enjoy it! We would probably use some kind of joins (dowels/dominos/biscuits etc) if the boards were as bowed/twisted as they were, before gluing them together. Just to make it easier to stop them from moving around while we clamp them down. That way we probably wouldn’t have had to sand as much. We would probably try different techniques there, just for the fun if it, but we’re still really satisfied with how the table turned out! If you care about the table being completely straight and don’t want to to bow or twist a little afterwards, you might also wanna insert some metal support beams or something. I think our table have bowed a tiny bit more since we built it, but not much. But like we said in the video, we don’t want the table to look perfect, so we really don’t mind that. I understand if that throws people off though, so keep that in mind! Sorry for the super long reply John! I hope you care to read it all 😂 Have a good one and thanks again for watching and commenting!
@@byferner This is a great idea, as it would make the table more solid in general too. Yes, I can see your point on making the table as you did, it has a nice rustic feel. Man that table looks beaut!!! Could definitely make a business in table building haha. Really like the flow of the vid and the info graphics are so cool!
How strong this table is really? Plank edges glued together with no connecting dowels, since it is quite heavy. I am just wondering. I missed the part where the legs were built. Legs are half of the work when you building a table in my humble opinion.
It’s pretty much just as strong as a table glued together with dowels. Dowels are mostly for alignment actually. I agree with you! But the reason I built this desk top was because I was gifted a pair of adjustable legs from a friend 😄

That is beautiful, I also love your keyboard/mousepad, do you happen to remember where you got it? (I’m assuming not in my country)
Woodworking is such a satifying process, nice looking desk.
I couldn’t agree more, and thank you!
I can’t wait to get my own dedicated space for it! But for now, I’m grateful for the shared little “workshop” we have available in our apartments basement.
Thanks for watching and the kind words!
Looks fantastic! yall did an amazing job! would love to try and make my own one day!
Thank you so much!
I really love it. But do you have any more information on the legs/base?
Thanks a lot, glad you like it! I’m afraid I don’t, they were gifted to me by a friend, who got it from his old job.
@@byfernerHeh. Fair enough. I'm looking to build myself a desk using a solid-core door and that looked about perfect.
o/
Amazing result! I'm looking to build my own table and this is just the thing I'm looking for! Also use the same mouse and monitor, so it's truly meant to be :D
Oh really? :D That’s awesome! Let us know how it turns out! Send us a photo on Instagram DM :D Best of luck! That’s so funny, truly ment to be! 😄
Thank you, glad you like it! That’s a great tip, I appreciate it!
Definetly gave me inspiration for my coming office setup
Love to hear that, that’s awesome 🙏 let us know how it went when you’re finished, best of luck my friend!
So need a large desk for working at home. Going to have a go now at building one thanks to your video. Cheers
Let us know if you build one, we would love to see it :D Thank you for watching Mike!
@@byferner I cheated a little after calculating how much the sander etc would cost, so bought a 2m oak worktop and distressed it, varnished it. Looks great on some tressle table legs. When I've more money I might actually buy the tools and do a dining table. Cheers 👍
8:20 my favorite part of the table i think it looks very nice at this stage
Sick! I actually don’t mind that either, especially if you’re looking for a really dark moody table. Thanks a lot for kind words and for watching 🙏❤️
wow Messi quit football and started woodworking !
Hahaha that’s hilarious, I’ll take that any day! ❤️
beautiful but is that gonna hold without dowel joints and just glue ?
Thanks! Yeah, just as strong. Dowels are mostly for alignment actually, the glue has all the strength you need and more 👍
Here I thought you were painting the TOP black. Thought to myself “BRO you’re fucking up!!!”
Hahaha, I can imagine that! Glad you stuck around to see the result! Thanks a ton for watching and commenting!
Now that looks A M A Z I N G!
We’re so glad to hear that you like it! T H A N K Y O U! ❤️🙏🏼😊
@@byferner Thank you (actually). You inspired me for my latest project!
We’re so excited to heart that! That really means a lot to us! ❤️
You lucked out considering it looks like you live in a Home Depot!
Haha, can’t argue with that
Good job. Thank you for making and sharing this video.
Thank you! So glad you like it, thanks for watching my friend!
Excellent! The final color turned to be super cool! 👍
Thank you so much! I’m glad to hear you like it! 😊
Beautiful work great job guys, I myself would've done it a bit brighter in color but it still looks great 👍🏼
Thank you so much! I feel you, I bet that would look really good too! Thanks again Rob, much appreciated ❤️
That turned out awesome.
Thank you so much! Glad you like it! 🙏
What a piece of art, beautiful
Thank you so much, that’s very kind of you! 🙏 glad you like it!
@@byferner You deserve it. This piece is definitely my style and color, you did it perfectly
This is oddly satisfying to watch. Great build man!
That really means a lot, thank you so much! 🙏 Thanks a lot for watching and leaving a kind comment ❤️
Nice job. Where did you get the legs for the table?
Even with the bow, for somewhat a beginner, that was an amazing job and deserves recognition. Truly amazing what information people can gather quickly nowadays thanks to the Internet. Your video may also be a source of inspiration for woodworking beginners.
I appreciate the length reply, hope to see more woodworking content from the both of you, have a good one 👍🏼
Thank you so much, truly inspiring to hear all this! Very kind of you! We’ll put out more content for sure, we’re working on it right now!
Thanks once again!
Nice job, looks great! Love the music and humerous editing too. 😊 I'm building a table/cabnet to mount a portable AC unit in my garage. This will be a great look.

Send us photo or tag us on Instagram or Facebook if you don’t mind 😁👏 Best of luck with your project! 🙌 Thanks once again for the kind words! 🙏
Do you remember what type of black paint you used? Oil based, latex, etc? Thanks!
Yeah, we used a water based “furniture paint”. Thank you for watching our video btw, appreciate it! Best of luck with your project!
Thank you!
Of course, anytime! 🙌🏼
You guys did an amazing job ~ you’ve got me thinking about my needed desk… :)
Thank you so much! That’s awesome, would love to see your project if you decide to for it 👏 let us know!
I would recommend a wax finish. Wax finishes with stains in the wax have thicker layers in cracks and light on flat areas. Then maybe some boiled linseed oil or maybe even shalack overtop
Appreciate the tip! I think that would be better for the look we were going for as well! Thanks a lot!
No problem 😊
This video is gold. Pure gold.
Great job folks!

What color is that wall? Pain brand and paint code? Definitely feeling that color for an office space.
The brand is: Jotun
Paint code: 4638
General color code: S6010-R90B
Let me know if you want a photo of the bucket with the information on it, just DM us on instagram or FB! Best of luck!
you did good I would use wood dowels along the side of the boards and glued as well as torch the wood first before stain.
Thank you! Those are both good points!
You did a great job with making this table....how much did you sell it for?
Thank you so much! We made it for our apartment, we still use it to this day 😊
@byferner how much did it cost to make and if you sold it, how much would you ask for it?
@a.m.6847 I don’t remember the costs to be honest, and I have no idea how much I much I would sell it for either I’m afraid.
Very high production value. Good job guys!
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it! 😊
That's a beautiful desk! Better than anything at IKEA! I hope you both made passionate love on that desk before using it as an actual desk.
Thank you so much 😄 aye, IKEA better step up their game!
Omg
I'm making my pc desk too and i took the same steps same materials and even the same mistakes lol ...that was fun to watch
Haha, that’s hilarious! I wish you recorded it so I could see it too! 😄 You happy with it?
Desk looks great and the b-roll at the end was well made.
Yay, thank you so much!
Awesome video!! Just starting to work with wood, made a coffee table last week and am extremely satisfied with the end result. Now I will build this with your help!

Okay so many things went wrong but you made it out alive looks good.
Haha, true that! Thanks a lot my friend!
I love the table or desk look's awesome
Thanks a lot my friend!
What did you use after staining and everything? Is it a glaze? Very beautiful desk.
It’s a matte, water based, polyurethane finish! Thank you so much!
Stunning!!!
Thank you so much!
Nice job! I'm building a similar desk this weekend and ran across your video doing some research. Thanks for the tips.
@@byferner I loved the bird too. Neat surprise midway through the video. Nice touch. Gave me a good laugh on a cold Louisiana morning. (40deg Fahr or 5deg Cel) I know, not very cold by your standards I'm sure! Ha.
Absolutely stunning!

excellent demonstration
love the table
also being honest with your multitasking🤣

Som en jäkla dröm! Fantastisk produktion och bordet, kan ett bord bli vackrare? 🤷🏻♂️🌟
Looks fantastic.
Thanks a ton Ronnie, glad to hear that!
Desk turned out great! And so did the video! Good job with both!
I’m going to build my own desk in the near future and I’m just getting ideas...
I’m considering a Shou Sugi ban technique to add character... but not much... the lumber I’m using is about 130 years old... worn and rustic... nail holes and scratches... I want to respect it’s age, while still making it usable as a desk.
Stain and paint is an interesting idea!
Thank you so much, we really appreciate it :D
Wow, that sounds amazing! Would you mind sharing the results with us once your done? We would love to see it! Gotta say I'm a bit jealous of the lumber you've come across, that sounds really beautiful!
Don't hesitate to send us a DM on Instagram and share the results with us! :D
Best of luck!
@@byferner thanks my friend! I’ll see what I can do... it might be a TH-cam project. But it’s likely going to be on top of a sit/stand desk I just acquired.
@@byferner As for wood, find an older neighborhood.. like turn of the century (20th) houses.. sometimes they get demo’d and the lumber is great... just be mindful of lead paint and asbestos, and... often it seems... it an be old growth lumber you’ll never find at the lumber yard!
Ps... do I hear a slight accent that isn’t from America?
That’s a great tip! Thank you, we’ll keep that in mind!
That’s correct, we’re from (and still in) Sweden :D
Oh, even better! Keep us updated! :D
Ooo, just like ours! :D
Beautiful 🎉
Thank you so much! 🙏
Very nice end result.

So happy to hear that, thank you so much!
looks f******g sick, well done
Thank you so f’in much! 🙏
Beautiful job!
Thank you so much!
With it bring pine, I wonder how burning it glue up and prior to sanding would have left it looking, then light stain and clear coat.
I think it could look beautiful! I definitely want to experiment with that at some point! There’s a Japanese technique called “Shou Sugi Ban” that’s very similar to what you’re describing, you should check it out if you haven’t seen it before 😃
