Hi Tanja, it's not about the hair, it's a combo package for skin and eyes as well. Even if you put certain colors against a ginger going grey, it will be very different than what you'd put on a black haired person going grey. There are undertones to the skin that can make anyone look ill or washed out, teeth look yellow, eyes look dull and not sparkling, etc. Back in the 70's and 80's, we used to follow a system that was based on "Color Me Beautiful" which was a book that dealt with skin/body tonalities and colors from the 4 seasons. WInters were jewel toned black and white wearing folks, where Springs are medium toned bright colored blondes and light browns (think coral instead of red, medium green instead of Winter's Emerald). Summers are the grey hazy toned heather type colors, lots of pastels and lighter colors for the light blondes and light ash toned brunettes. The Autumns had russets and mustards and olive tones for the Ginger colored and Auburn haired. How going grey fits in is wearing your colors, but maybe a slightly less intense tonality of it. But you will still wear this, because it makes your eyes sparkle and it blends better with your skin tones and undertones. It's like finding the correct shade of red lipstick for you, blush and eyeshadows. You can always "do" you, but now differently, and still look ok. The colors won't wear you, you will wear them.

PS you are a Winter, so wear those reds, dark blues, jewel tones, and they will make you sparkle!

Hello Tanja, I recently went natural--ie, gray. I have opted for nearly monochromatic wardrobe, that is black, gray, white, cream. I have a few pops of aubergine, maroon, burgundy, navy, sanguine, claret, royal purple, and some teal. I found that they look better than my autumnal colors do. The autumnal looked great with my red hair, but not so much with my gray. So I thank you for posting this because so many women do not realize that gray does change what looks good on us and makes us feel good about ourselves.

Exactly! It sounds like you have a good foundation of clothes that you can build around with the black grays and creams.

My hairdresser actually advised against dying my natural salt and pepper hair! He said if anything he'd suggest bleaching a few pieces platinum white to even it out bc most of my white hair is in one thick piece on the front right with the rest evenly scattered. I decided against the added streaks and he didn't push it at all. That's when I knew he was a keeper!

    Hi Tanja!
Loved your video! I was waiting for you to say something about the color coral ...and you did! I am 67 (my pic is 5 years old) and my hair started turning white when I was in my mid 20s. I colored it light ash blonde until I was in my late 30s / early 40s and finally gave up. So it's been solid white since I was about 50. ANYway, whenever I would wear coral, I would always get compliments on how it was "my color", especially in the summer when I have just a little bit of tan. That said, I think you are spot on with all your color choices for graying / white hair! Thank you!

Tanja, all those colours look fantastic on you! Thanks you so much for this video. Im a darker complexion and Ive always stuck to plums and berry colours on my lips, but today I went out and bought an orangey red lip colour and I love it. I dont wear makeup but I do wear the occasional lipstick. Also, the other day I put on a silver/charcoal blouse and I felt it just did nothing for my complexion, especially with my grey hair showing much more. Im not really good with fashion - I also tend to stick to subtle colours, and I really wish I had a stylist to advise me.. The sales assistant where I bought the lipstick was so eager to try foundation on me but I felt that I looked almost like a doll. I couldnt wait to get home and wash it off. Your grey hair is lovely and I love love your lip colour and top. Great video

Hi Tanja. I love my hair now its grey. It is very pretty mainly if I keep it nicely cut and styled. I suit a lot of colours I didn't before and agree with maxthecat14 that it depends on your skin and eye colour and the style of grey hair. You look fabulous in red. It was my prime colour when I was a teen but didn't suit it much later on but it looks ok on me now. Mostly I wear light pastels, black and grey.

You do look good in red. As you held up the colors, your gray kind of took on a different shade; your whiter gray would almost lighten & darken, which was cool. Your gray is very pretty the way it's coming in. My more silvery grays have turned like an ash blonde; very wierd since my natural color used to be black; I haven't colored my hair for almost 4 years.

  • @Historian212
    @Historian212 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Tanja -- Sorry, you need to take skin tones into consideration. We don't all look good in the tones you're showing, regardless of hair color. Navy blue, light purple -- those wash me out immediately (I have the gunmetal gray, with just a few lighter bits, what you called battleship gray).
There's also an inherent problem trying to do colors online, because computer screens differ a lot in how accurately they interpret color. For example, the blue you showed as teal is peacock or royal blue on my screen, not teal.
What's great is that most colors come in a range so, for example, those of us with yellow undertones in our skin can wear more of a tomato red, instead of the bluer primary red. I can't wear hot pink at all, even now. However, a warm violet looks good on me.
The only way to do this transition is to go to stores and hold the colors up to your face -- although do take store lighting into consideration, it can change things a lot. Even better, find a sympathetic makeup artist at a good store -- preferably, one who's gone through this transition herself, it makes a difference as to how you're treated -- and experiment.
I wear a lot of scarves, and am currently cleaning out my old ones to make way for colors that are more flattering now. Using scarves is a great way to try out new colors more cheaply than buying garments. And scarves are excellent accessories to combine with beloved outfits that don't look as flattering now, but can work if the flattering scarf is next to your face.
Not all of us can wear white, even as we go gray. My skin looks terrible against white, as it always has. Even with flattering makeup on. And I used to wear black all the time, but now a charcoal or soft gray looks much better on me.
BTW if you're just turning 50, what looks good on you is different from what's going to work in 10 years or so. Just letting you know.
(PS if you went to Coldwater Creek it wasn't a "thrift store," which is used clothing. You went to a Coldwater Creek outlet store.)

Historian212 Well thought-out comment. Many factors weigh into the process of choosing colors once hair is gray. You mentioned most. Skin may get paler as we age. Additionally, determining the individual question of clarity of color and the level of contrast you look best in are important, too. Skin undertone can be cool, warm, or neutral. Eye color adds another thing to consider. Check out Imogen’s (Australian image consultant) info for lots of details.

So glad I found your comments! I’m a light skin with warm undertone. Green eyes and medium brown hair which is going grey. I look awful in white and black…. Like death in both and even though I’m going grey I still look great in camel, warm green and warm reds. All of the colours that this lady suggests look so wrong on me. Thankfully I didn’t throw my whole wardrobe out! 😂

As this lady says 'EXPERIMENT' to find what suits you. The colours shown here look fabulous IF you have cool, clear, colouring and strong contrast.

White is a combination of all colors. Black is void of color. Shades are darkness. Hues are actual colors, the colors derived from use of the primary colors: Red blue yellow. Shades are colors you obtain by adding darkness.

Thank you for take in mind my suggestion, I considered that all the colors that you pick look wonderful , my skin color is olive like yellowish and my hair color is charcoal gray. I guess the cool colors will be the best choice.

I think cool colors will be best. I do have yellow undertones in my skin also.
If your hair was brown before you went gray then cool colors will work for you. Try some different shades out for yourself. Most of all wear what you feel you look good in . Thats the most important thing you have to like it.

I love jewel tones but since I’m fair like you I totally need to stay away from orange, yellow, tan, cream, and browns.

I found white alone makes my hair look yellow and light grey doesn't work at all. Primary colors are great. Deep roses and teals etc.. Your best tip...hold it up to your face !

Thanks for putting this together for your silver-haired sisters! The bright, clear and rich jewel tones look so wonderful on you with your skin tone and color of your beautiful silver hair....which we need to take into consideration when choosing our most flattering clothing colors. The "Color Me Beautiful' method has been around for 30+ years, and offers some of the best guidance I've seen to help us pick our best colors. The more subdued colors, and the warmer tones that you showed in your video are not quite as great with your coloring...not to criticize, but the dull denim blue of the jean jacket just does not enhance your beautiful skin and sparkling eyes. The classic style however, is perfect for you, so you might want to consider dying it a rich royal blue to give it some "kick"! :-)

I think the main thing would be to find the right lipstick....all those colors looked good next to your lipstick.

See, that red she's wearing makes me look like I have liver disease. I can't wear anything with yellow in it but give me a bluey red and it's fine. My colouring is completely different to this lady's.
