    Jason, this is Miguel Cisneros (Angel's brother). We went to USW with you. Its been a while, I just rant into your videos by searching for Brule River as I'll be going there end of September for some fly fishing (which I just picked up this year) super exciting. I have never caught a trout or steal-head so we will see how goes. If you guys have any tips I will be more than happy to take it. Also, more than welcome to join me and catch up.

    Why do you gill the fish when you typically are planning to release them? I know you are going to say you are careful but you could just as easily get a picture shot cradling the chromer under the belly and holding onto the wrist of the tail.

      was just going to mention the same thing! as nice as it was to catch and release it, please learn how to properly handle the fish if you plan to ensure the survival of the fish.

      +Matt Troutman Steelhead do not have the same kind of "wrist" as other Salmonids. Holding a Steelie by the tail is a bad idea.

      marked wayne I'm not suggesting only holding the steelhead by the tail and hanging it upside down like guys used to do when landing Atlantic salmon. I said "cradling the chromer under the belly and holding on to the wrist of the tail". Grasping the wrist will be better than just cradling the fish under the belly and barely holding onto the caudal fin.
      If we want to get really aware of the potential liability of a steelhead, or any cold water species, we shouldn't even be removing the fish from the water for a picture. Leave it in the net and have a buddy get the camera ready. Then grasp the fish in the net without lifting it out of the water and take the picture.

      I agree Matt. I actually think that our only hope for Northwestern Salmonids is a complete moratorium on sport and commercial fishing for at least two life-cycles of the longest cycled Salmonid species present. Combined with intense habitat restoration and dam removal, this is the only way to really turn the clock back for our fish. Watershed management is not rocket science.

    Hey, great video. I would like to start using flatfish for trout locally and I'm also planning a trip up to the Brule at the end of the month. What model/size is that flatfish? It looks like an Yakima F7. Thanks!

    can it work with a spinning reel?

    • @brandonmclean58
      @brandonmclean58 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, that is the proper way to fish it, Im not sure why he is using it on a fly rod, its not like he will be able to fly fish with it.

      It drifts better with a fly rod cause it’s longer and you can reel it slower

      Brandon Botham they do make sizes for fly fishing. Kinda weird tho because the fly rod flatfish are bigger than the baby flatfish.

    Pathetic handling of the fish. Might as well have kept them.
