Yep, hard to believe they did an 80% off sale. I think it’s definitely the best in terms of being able to get really deep into sound design. But anyway, I’m glad a lot more people are getting their hands on it.
Man, it's by far my favorite besides Fabric XL. People are sleeping on ol OPX-4 for real! It's so much to unpack when creating patches that the possibilities are virtually endless! Hadn't touched my Fathom-O nor wavestate in a good while.
Noodled around for the last 2 hours and definitely came up with usable sounds, only after watching your playlist on this beast. Thanks, and please more.
thanks so much for this video! I've been debating whether to get Jura or the OPx-4 as my main synth on the MPC One, and started the trials, but was having a really hard time getting a good sound out of the OPx4 ... this video was great (especially the hint about the 'True Init' thing, it's very dumb that the init has all of the modulation on). I've actually watched a few others on your channel too and they're very insightful and easy to follow :)
Hey @rainbow_mess, thanks for watching and glad to hear my videos are helping. Jura is definitely easier to get a good sound out of. You really have to work kind of hard to make Jura sound bad. And it really does have a very nice, almost "signature" sound to it, which they nailed and expanded on, in my opinion. But OPx-4 is like an order of magnitude more powerful, if you're willing to put the time into it. Just depends on what you want. I'm not sure why they left all those modulation slots intact on the init patch. I'm sure they thought it would be helpful and save us some tapping and scrolling. But for those of us that initialize patches, it's just not what we're expecting. And at least for me it causes more confusion than it helps. To this day I still start with the "true init" user patch.
@joefilbrun Yeah, that's what it felt like to me. The modulation slots really remind me of the hydrasynth, and I think most of what I want to use Jura for I could probably just use key groups for, so I ended up getting the OPx4.
@Joe Filbrun FYI: Have you not updated synth? On Operator pages, the top right is the "Super Operator" knobs and bottom right is an DADSR envelope, where you can touch screen for quick adjustments or tap it to open up a transparent full screen envelope. Plus the normal envelope tabs are still there. I'm running an MPC Live 2 on 2.11.8, but it's been there. A few updates ago, there was a synth content folder that updated the GUIs. Not a big deal, but for workflow, it's a little better to not have to switch pages while shaping your sound.
12dB/decade filter - now that’s a long filter slope 😂 j/k Another great video on OPx-4. Also, I think you are finding your production style - the side-by-side and ad-hoc riffing suits your tutorials.
Yep, you’re going to be waiting a long time for that filter to work lol! Thanks for the feedback on the production style. That’s actually SUPER helpful. I have been playing with different ideas to find something that comes off well, and also doesn’t turn into an editing nightmare.
Great tutorial Joe! Just got the OPx4 and since im a beginner, i need to know more about it. This VST sound complet in therme of sounds, but complicated. If i make a mistake at the beginning of building a sound, then i would loose that patch idea, and the project. Please make more tutorial, even if you think that it wont sound good. Another idea also would be to make a patch with mistake, and try to find the cause... THAT would be awsome! I like the way you explain the values, and the diffence between them. Make more sence to understand! Thanks and cheers from Austria!
Hi. Thanks! I don’t even really think about it in terms of making “mistakes” when programming a synth. There’s really a lot of back and forth between different controls. Changing one might make you have to go adjust another. A lot of mistakes can turn into “happy accidents” too!
Dude, who gives you the right to come on here showing us all this awesomeness?! Carry on please! Greatly appreciate all of the great info that you are always willing to share with us fellow "music nerds."😅
Great content! A lot of MPC owners never take the time to work with these powerful plugins. They have no clue as to what they have, but then complain to Akai for random new features via updates. SMH.
Thanks! Yep, I’m sure a lot of people have no interest in sound design. And that’s cool, to each their own. It’s nice that for those of us that do, we have the FULL synth with all of the controls here to work with.
I actually downloaded the user manual for this one! Not read it yet though... Quick look at it i see it has also got a sample layer on one of the edit pages, wondered if you could load your own samples?
No way to load your own samples that I’ve found. It’d be nice if you could. But they have a pretty decent selection there, and you further mutate them with filters, effects, and modulation. So overall I think the sample layer is still pretty useful.
@@joefilbrun Still not had chance to dig into it other than a quick look when i installed it. Hopefully get a look later :) I was surprised to see it there.
@@joefilbrun Actually i just looked at this. You can add your own samples to use in the sample layer and also i added my preset to the factory presets so can save to the new favorite sound selector or recall from the preset list. Its a bit of a hack, easy and nothing crazy. I would think you could save your own presets with the other plugins as well. Didn't think to try before.
@@IsshmanGarcia I don't follow the rules :) They're just wavs, 48Khz 16 bit mono. I was happily playing back my own sample yesterday within the sample layer and adding my own presets to the factory supplied to be able to add them to the newish favourites selector. Very easy to do but not 'official'. But it should be along with program change. Akai are behind the curve I'm afraid with most stuff. Synth sounds great though, total ambient soundscape machine for me :)
I’ll have to take a close look at it. I could certainly do a video on it. But I’m not sure that I would be able to say much that wouldn’t be obvious to most everybody after just spending a few minutes with it.
Do you have the only copy of the OPx4 manual in existence? These have been super helpful in understanding what is going on inside this synth. The bus 1-3 still trips me up sometimes
Haha, I have just spent way too much time messing with synths. There is an actual manual for it, though. I’m not sure how much it will help because it reads more like a reference sheet than a tutorial. :) But it’s probably worth at least downloading and looking at. Glad these videos are helping! www.airmusictech.com/user-guides/opx-4.pdf
@@joefilbrun thankyou!!! I think inmusic should link this in the download section when you purchase. I got mine last sale & could not find any reference to a manual.
Hey Joe these videos are gold!!! Hope you come back to do more, you’re a great teacher and your disposition is awesome✌️
Quick note: I can't believe Akai has put the OPX4 on sale for $29. It's arguably. the best MPC plugin.
Agree, great value now I've had a play with it. Love them looping envelopes at different time values

Of course, months after I paid full price for the whole bundle on day one. Worth it still!

in which shop was it on sale?

Glad you’re getting some good stuff from these. I will plan to make some more on OPx-4. There’s a lot to know about it, and a lot that can be done!
I really appreciate these videos. They are very helpful on more then one level. Thanks again!
I’m glad you’re getting a lot out of them. And really appreciate you letting me know!
Thanks Joe, this is perfect for people buying it on $ale right now.
It’s probably my favorite synth on the MPC/Force. I’m glad they are getting it out there to more people.
Thanks Joe! You videos are all interesting and so well explained! Keep on the good job, it's always a pleasure!
Thanks very much for that! I'm definitely planning for more.
Gracias por tus vídeos, son buenísimos y de mucha ayuda.

Please more on this plugin, like you mentioned in a video- about how to create other basic waves.
This is great, thanks!

maybe some filter drive for some analog sounding warmth. Nice tutorial!

Hi. After you’ve obtained the license, you should be able to go into preferences -> activate plugins to download and authorize it.
