OPx-4 is a dream synth and can do more than the factory presets show. By using the LFO's and loopable envelopes it is possible to create short sequences within a patch. It is also possible to change pitches and/or harmonic content by re-striking the same note. With the amazing modulation matrix one can program the MW to morph between 2 different sounds. Or, if you prefer, morph with keystrokes or velocity or aftertouch. It is also possible to mimic a split keyboard with the key tracking and modulation shapers. Explore and have fun!
Yeah...it blew me away. Some of the presets were total crap. All the ones the emulate real sounds are just lame. It's these pads where it really shines!
@@PinkBuddhaAcademy The Atmos sounds were my favorite to program and were added at the 10th hour prior to the final submission deadline. There were three of us submitting presets so there was quite the range of styles. There are more in the works that I believe will suit your tastes nicely.

I agree, I wish I could play like that my skills are barely even existing over here lol I'm working at it though I know that takes years, the biggest step I think is having an expressive synth I want to play... the Gaia2 did that for me and it seems to work well with OPx4 to me so between these two I'll learn to play if it's the last thing I do. It helps I'm using the same keybed for both I think... not sure though maybe that's not true who knows I'm just having fun it feels so much more expressive than just sequencing everything even though technically you can do it, but it always seems to come out better with a human touch for me, I can't sequence that kind of stuff easily

I don't have a volca, so I can't compare, but I do like the Opx-4 a lot. It's nice having it in my Live 2. I haven't had any problems. I was waiting for it to go onsale. Not ready to sell my digitone. That is more versatile, but for $79, this is a good deal for FM.
I absolutely love FM, I just wish there were more pure FM sounds in the presets but I get it and they do sound pretty good on average. The range of sound you can get is just so wide with FM it completely blows away analog in my book. I like analog too but FM is just way more useful but can be tough to go for specific sounds sometimes I think it's best to do dedicated sound design sessions with FM but maybe that's my inexperience talking. I mean I've done a fair amount of programming FM, but not nearly enough to have that kind of knowledge at least to where I can just imagine a sound and program it, I can take it in directions sure that's mainly how I go with FM, pick a general direction and see where it ends up
Thanks for the review of the sounds. Really like what you did with ‘Kinetics’’. I got the demo on the MPC One and was waiting a little while longer just in case Akai do a deal but I’m thinking it’s worth the money right now! The sounds are quite something - I had a Korg Volca FM but I couldnt achieve sounds much like what the OPX-4 is capable of with my limited FM synthesis ability. Akai say the OPX-4 makes FM more accessible - looks/sounds to me maybe it does.
Yeah - sounds pretty incredible, esp if you like the lush sounds. The "keys" were pretty much crap - as FM isn't a great way to make keyboard sounds (imho).

So this is like DX-7/Ableton Operator like for the MPC? MIght snatch it if they do a sale on Black Friday as I have operator FM synths in the studio...but I would not mind having one inside the MPC as well. But certainly not at that price.

You know....i didn't look that up. Usually I don't worry about polyphony, because I'm rarely using more than 5 voices at a time. And with a digital synth, there are almost always plenty more than that
Still No update on the Force …Akai keep sending me emails offering me discount on software I can’t use, it’s really annoying like they’re rubbing my face in the fact they’re ignoring their fan base.
Maybe it was the just patches that you used & the way you played them but I'm not feeling the presets but I know to never judge a synth by its presets & the editing power of this plugin powerful so I'm still interested. It be cool if did a video on using to make your own sounds & then using that preset in song with plugins/samples.
lol...well, that's how it goes sometimes. Liking presets it's completely subjective. FM programming is a bit challenging, if you really go down that rabbit hold. I usually just "modify" and existing preset to make it more of my liking - vs. building my own sounds.
I kinda think the user interface for opx4 is complex… I’m not a stranger to fm either. All I want is 4 (actual) sine waves, a clearly labeled ratio/freq. section, an adsr, and maybe some filters and fx…that’s it. all the mod slots are too much. ..if I needed a sampler, I’d later it with fabric…that’s an unnecessary addition. Not to say it’s not cool to have them, but if it comes at the cost of more/better FM waves . I’d rather an fm plug in be what it says it is.
The Opx4 doesn't produce real sinewaves. They are always kind of sawtoowish. If you are looking for those typical clear FM sounds, this product ain't for your. Normal Fm Synths sound different. Akai, pleas update this.
I’m super into sound design so there was a lot of stuff I caught that I did not like, although I don’t regret purchasing it at all. I don’t like that you can’t automate effect parameters, I make a lot of complex basses and they have a parametric eq that would be perfect for it. I also dislike how one filter and effect is dedicated to each submix chain. This could actually solve my previous complaint since I’d like more filters in general. Fine tuning the fm ratio with your finger or knob is a chore, the increments are way too big Other than that my own review raves a lot about it. To think this is available inside a portable device (I have the live 2) is pretty astounding. It really is a capable synths held back by some small oversights
It was always far too expensive for me (considering I got the whole Force for around 750 bucks on Ebay) but now its reduced to 10 bucks - I couldn't say No especially since you also get the AU/VST plugin included as well, should you prefer a computer DAW.
