  • Taken from the DVD Count Arthur Strong: The Man Behind The Smile. Available to buy from www.countarthurstrong.com
In association with Doncaster Cable Vision, we celebrate the career of stage and screen star, Count Arthur Strong: The Man Behind The Smile.
Count Arthur Strong, showbiz legend and raconteur, reminds us just what we've been missing since his last television series, 'The Robin Hood Club’, was axed in 1960 something. With the added bonus of previously unreleased footage from Arthur's career - ranging from Desk Sergeant in Dixon of Doc Green, to the one time host of Ask The Family - and a rumour of a surprise star guest appearance, the celebration of Arthur's illustrious career is a show not to miss.
As Arthur himself says, "Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could just turn the telly on after a hard day at the abattoir...or whatever it is you do... and there I was, smiling back at you, in my own programme again, again.”
The finest raconteur alive -- even better
than some of the dead ones"

There's something indescribable and really unique about him which is involuntarily hilarious...can't put my finger on it, which makes it so intriguing and clever!

I listen to and have heard lots of radio comedy over the years.
I'm 67yo and am au fait with whatever has been broadcast over those years.
The Count, imo is the best of them all.
The Count is Steve Delaneys creation, written and performed by.
Tell me anyone else that has done this.
Not Hancock, not Steptoe, not Alf Garnett, Rod and Del Boy etc.
All absolutely brilliant, historical stuff. But wtitten by someone else and performed by another.
Arthur is unique and utterly amazing and should be acknowledged as such in the annuls of radio comedy.

    BRILLIANT! As always.
I went to his Margate show earlier this year [February I think it was or possibly 2013]. I booked the tickets on the Inferweb and the email came from the Winter Gardens Theatre so, naturally, I assumed the show was at the theatre on the sea front. When we got there it was some Boy Scout event which I thought was part of the event. The guy on the door knew nothing about Count Arthur, never heard of him, but suggested I try the Theatre Royal up town. Got there just as they were closing the doors. That was a great joke he done there, just immediately on my arrival.
Be warned, the live show is painfully funny. I tore some of the cartlidge between my ribs but through it I always laughed. Count Arthur wasn't fazed, the show went on and on. You couldn't make this stuff up.
Will definitely go to see him again if he comes ...again.

Saw him live last year my stomach hurt from laughing so much. just looking at him has me in stitches. The radio character changed a bit for tv. There's an hilarious sketch when he's using a dvd thinking it's a toaster, and is ecstatic that it has a fast forward button.

Wow, I remember this original Ask The Family (with Robert Robinson). I must have been 12 or 13 and had a big crush on 'Phyllis' - so much that I watched the whole episode even though I found it tedious. This brought back memories of watching late afternoon TV before tea!

One of the most brilliant pieces of observation in any comedy clip I’ve seen is when Count Arthur mistakenly calls Mrs Kent, Mrs Corbett and the camera focuses on her and she is the spitting îmage of dear departed Ronnie Corbett. Its momentary and easily missed but is just one more of the hundreds of reasons I adore CAS and that Steve Delaney bloke who looks after him 😉

Many people might not be aware that Count Arthur also did a pilot show for the "Generation Game". Sadly it was never aired due in no small part to a misunderstanding regarding the prizes. "As the compare I think it's only fair that I get anything that the silly sods can't remember on the conveyor belt",said Count Arthur."..and they most certainly did not remember the Rotisori, Set of Wine Goblets and Black & Decker Workmate and that's on tape is that so they can bloomin' whistle for those"

I saw this show in Glasgow when it toured.
There were about 32 people in the audience which really added to the ambience of the failed performer.
    It was brilliant.
I went to the last show also and it was packed out, probably due to the tv show.
Lots of folk shouting for 'Eggy".
    I gave Malcolm a shout.
    I will be buying this.

When I saw this show, there were bits that weren't on the DVD.
When he introduced the Ask the Family clip he said that one of the mothers hadn't been able to appear, but they were lucky as they found a stand in at the last minute. "Watch out for Ronnie Corbett in a wig".
There was a brilliant clip of his appearance as a cyberman in Dr Who, and after a bit of verbal confusion he pointed at a woman in the auduence and said "That's what I said in the first place, if you'd bothered listening. Rewind it when you get home."
