What do you do when a customer walks into your shop and asks for 'cack' or for 'parri' -- or indeed for a 'pee'? A (very wealthy) Arab walks into the Mini Market. His wife has armed him with a shopping list (and asked him to run an errand for her later). But communication can be a problem as pronunciation is not that particular customer's forte... (Fortunately for the shop owner, his wife is there to help him. Despite his condescending attitude towards her, it seems she is twice as clever as he is...) Level: C1 -- C2. I'm an Arab and I have lived in the UK for quite some time.. When people in the UK communicate with non English speakers I must give it to them they are the best listeners, they have tolerance and respect the person in front of them and try to help him even if he is struggles to speak English, and I respect that very much in them.

That's true. And I have found that Arabs are also kind and respectful to strangers in the places I have visited in the Middle East.
I am a native English speaker & have lived in 4 different countries. When trying to speak German some shop assistants stand there with an angry face & say "WHAT!" as if I am from outer space. When trying to speak Greek I am met with smiles as they appreciate I am trying. Also the level of English spoken by Greeks is high.
German and French are the most thankless languages to learn.
As a German who teaches English I'm sorry to hear that.
We all know Germans have full sense of German's humor😅
No offence to them but shop assistants are not always the friendliest to customers, unlikely their dream job, and not the best in foreign languages. (but I know in big cities you have to be able to communicate at least in English and sometimes French, Spanish... if it's quite touristic.)
@@Dr.K.Wette_BE When I first arrived in Athens I worked in the port of Piraeus & spoke Spanish to the local shopkeepers as it turns out due to the shipping a lot of people had a Spanish speaking parent. My shoe mender was telling me his father was on the ships & his mother was from Venezuela. I was getting my new apartment ready & the shop selling kitchen ware etc. had a man behind the counter who could speak Spanish too. So I would try Spanish, English & my little bit of Greek. In Israel I learned to count in just 5 days & would point to things & say the price so they knew what I wanted. I also bought a pair of shoes speaking in German, I was astounded they admitted to speaking German. I do try my best at my basic European languages rather than just expect people to speak English. but am saddened at peoples' rudeness even though as you say they might not be doing their dream job. I have an understanding of French from school & would certainly try that if I were ever in France.
Absolutely priceless we were allowed to laugh once upon a time. Nobody took offence we all laughed together.
This sketch is not about race, but about the idiosyncrasies of the English language, which has borrowed words from all over the world. Ronnie Barker was a clever man.
I thought it was just because having someone who doesn't speak a language properly can lead to funniness.
@@dianehall5063 actually 'properly' is an illusion. Even native English speakers sound funny to non-native speakers or other native speakers. The word data is pronounced very differently in three different native English-speaking countries. In the US, it is pronounced day-da or da-da (with da pronounced similar to the da in dam and the t sounding like a d). In the UK it is pronounced day-ta. In Australia, it is daa-ta or daa-da.

This sketch shows that we only know how to pronounce English words because we heard it before. There are no rules like in other language. Compared to English, French is almost maths: you can almost make formulas to get the right pronunciation. Try that with English….

Man i lived in UK for 9 years. Its heart warming to see the shop keepers tolerance. Because my english was weak and this happend many times for me. British people in my opinion are the most tolerant with people of faith/other nationalties.

I worked as an EFL teacher in recent years, mainly with students from Saudi Arabia. They were good at jokes and making me laugh. Such lovely fun-loving people. I remember when one class ground to a halt as it started snowing and they all went to the window to watch it, before asking me if they could go down to the street to play in it!
Lovely people the Saudis; I spent 26 years among them and each one was nicer that the others. A great country with great people. And the shawarmas the best ever.

I'm a native Arabic speaker and I find that very funny. I still remember my friend who used to call pictures.. Picityours 😂
Stems from our languages. Like in the East of India 'v' is pronounced like 'bh' so very would be bhery, or cleavage would be cleabhage. In the South they say things like Yeverybody's wearing ellow 😂. Or some people pronounce veggie as wedgie as there isn't a 'v' and a 'w' in Indian languages.

I have split my sides laughing at this!! I have to watch it again. How clever! To actually create a sketch showing how the English language is difficult to navigate given it has borrowed from other languages, and demonstrating how it is not at easy as it seems where pronunciation is concerned.

The sketch isn't about the Arab being an Arab, but about the English language.
It's not always immediately obvious where the stresses are, or how the vowels are pronounced, silent letters etc.
as an american living in UK, it's also about the vast plethora of just dialects of British English!

I remember watching this sketch almost 40 years ago when we lived in the UK. Until this day our family still pronounces cinnamon as China man.

As an African, l've endelessly watched this brilliant out-of-the-world comedy. It is on a different planet.
I have watched it over a dozen times and laughed more and more.
I have forwarded it literally to hundreds of people here in Jeddah and they all cracked at the humour.
What is funny is I lived in the Middle East for 3 years back in the ‘70’s and i went through the same think trying to speak their language. Everyone was SO helpful and I am sure they had a good laugh at me trying to pronounce their words.

True that. That's why non-native speakers usually pronounce English words just like they are spelt. Since that's how it works in their mother tongue. For example, in India premise is pronounced as premise (rhyming with demise) not prem iss.

While it was somewhat difficult but sounded really soothing compared to an average indian accent that really hard hits one's ears and brain!

Ahmed Alshammeri it's funny and I enjoyed it. The harm is not the jokes themselves but what might fallow. They could be a pretext for something to fallow. This was done many years ago and you know what followed like gulf wars, "the war on terror" if Muslims/Arabs are talked about like this also killing them and invading them is also acceptable like what happened since 1991. Now it's not acceptable because Americans and Europeans had killed many Muslims and Arabs so they don't want to kill any more or at least they are thinking not to kill any more so now they have to watch out what they say and the way they talk about them. What I'm saying is words lead to actions. They tell what will fallow. You should find this type of jokes offensive because of the actions they will invite or when you get killed from left to right you'll wonder where all that was coming from. That's why Jews don't tolerate any type of demonization even if it might look innocent they're more smarter than you and can predict the future by being aware.
The reason this is hilarious: because this happens in real life! I'm from the north of England and people in the south struggle to understand me sometimes, so for people with English as a second language this must happen all the time Haha.
And it isn't racist. It's cultures laughing at each other in a respectful way. I bet white people are mocked in other cultures for comedy value.

Reminds me of when I first came to London to work and I tried to describe a flower to a colleague. I kept saying … ‘no, but it is facksia, don’t you know the colour facksia? and I could not understand why everyone was laughing and asking me to repeat my statement over again. In the end I learnt the correct pronunciation for fuchsia. It was very funny 😄 😅😂😂😂

To the head from that school who had a bit of bother over this - i hope you realise, the vast vast majority find it hilarious and really dont care, that includes those from the mid east. there are always a few who dont get it. thats not your problem and it shouldnt be front page news !! as a head, you should make a stand. you'd gain alot of respect , especially from the community who this clip jokes about. even they feel bad that people think they feel bad about it when they certainly dont... its so annoying having to spell it out.
My family consider this one of their best sketches, pure genius. We grew up tolerant and yet today's snowflakes are brainless, aggressive and attention seeking failures who lack the intellectual capacity to tell the difference from harmless hysterical satire like this and real rudeness and repression.

Hahaha! This is sort of scenario reminds me of myself in some ways.
I'm Aussie so our English is pretty well butchered anyway. But I'll always welcome people of all countries/ethnicities if they need help out in public and or are struggling to learn English. I like to learn the sounds so I can understand different accents as it intrigues me how it has evolved over time, a bonus is you get to meet someone new and hear their story even if you stand there for ages you get a glimpse as to what life is like where they're from.
Having two kids myself that had to go through speech therapy, which 90% of it was at home, I had learn to understand what they're saying and then correct them by slowly pronouncing the word and getting them to repeat it. It takes quiet a few years and the patience of a saint, more so for the kids. Bc It's usually them that gets frustrated not me as I'm always saying pardon? Pardon? To try and work out some of the words and it makes me feel bad bc they get angry and frustrated not at you but themselves bc they wish they could speak properly the poor little buggers.
The Australian accent is quite unique and not many are familar with it if you grew up outside of Australia. The two variants of English that are usually the norm are either American or British. This is true of course, but then would anybody write faitytales about poor girls marrying princes? :-) I think we need to be tolerant; we can enjoy the humour and the performance and ignore the stereotypes and the shopkeeper's patronising attitude towards his wife and the customer.
I wonder who'd be more offended. The left, because of its stereotypical depiction of middle-easterner. Or the right, because of its unflattering portrayal of a white, working-class, British male. Either way, this was a fantastic sketch about language and wordplay.
Of course it would be allowed. Comedians joke about accents all the time nowadays.
It's not only that though; Ronnie Barker is very patronising here - both towards his wife and towards the customer. Still, it is a very funny, carefully crafted and beautifully performed sketch. It is also very clearly a product of its time. I believe it is because this period is still so close to ours that we are so sensitive to these things. I don't think anybody would object to people reading Aristotle because he endorsed slavery...
Nick Michelioudakis I am sure your right, but in my book it was a comedian poking fun at cultural differences. The fact that it would not be allowed today in my opinion is a sad indication of just how much society has deteriorated due to political correctness.
Being a sweaty sock, ginger living in England had to learn very quickly the difference between witty banter and pointed insult, pity other ethnicities seem unable to learn the same thing.

@@pollyesther1243 Please. If you see an Arab dressed like this in your country, he is rich. The Arab robes is like wearing an expensive suit in their countries. Working-class Arabs will only wear a normal shirt and pants. I lived in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia for 4 years and the rich guys are very very generous and will not hesitate to tip you $100 just for a candy bar. One time I was driving a car and a guy waved me down for help. He says he needed help to get to a location quickly. He just put a $100 bill in my shirt pocket and just got in my car. I was like, "$100? And you want to go to this location? Sir yes Sir!"
