Maiden has a lot of songs referring to historical events, literature, mythology, etc. They're the ones who opened my mind to a lot of those subjects in school. Alexander the Great, Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Trooper, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, To Tame a Land, Brave New World, Children of the Damned...... Many more songs. Awesome band and song writing!
I dont think To Tame a Land would fall under historical. It is based on the Frank Herbert novel Dune. Now that would be good to point out how they incorporate literay references (same with Murders in the Rue Morgue, Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Brave New World). Historical Maiden songs (oddly enough, majority are Bruce Dickinson era songs). In addtion to Run to the Hills: Invaders (Viking conquest of the British Isles), Aces High, Paschendale, Monsegure, Tears of the Clown (about Robin Williams suicide and depression), The Trooper, Alexander the Great, Tail Gunner, The Clansman (about the fight for Scottish independence in the 1500s, not about the Klan), These Colors don't Run, The Longest Day (Normandy invasion, 6 June 1944), Empire of the Sun, Death of the Celts, Darkest Hour (the battle of Dunkirk in World War II). Iron Maiden has quite a few songs inspired by historical events or by classic literature. Aces High depicts the Battle of Britain from the perspective of an RAF Spitfire pilot. The Trooper is set during the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War and, more specifically, is inspired by the poem The Charge of the Light Brigade by Tennyson. Alexander the Great is pretty self explanatory. Murders in the Rue Morgue is based on a short story be Edgar Allan Poe. Rime of the Ancient Mariner is based on a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Paschendale is about one of the bloodiest battles of WWI. Empire of the Clouds is about the British airship R101 which crashed on its maiden (pun not intended) voyage and was actually deadlier than the Hindenburg disaster. This is just an incomplete list, to give some context. There are plenty others. They also did a lot of songs inspired by science fiction :) Bottom line Iron Maiden are great musical storytellers.
They also covered a lot of pop culture stuff like TV shows and movies ; The Prisoner, The Fugitive, Where Eagles Dare, The Number Of The Beast (inspired by one of Steve Harris' nightmares after seeing The Omen), and more. They do it all.
The Trooper is a song based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854, which took place during the Crimean War, and inspired by Lord Tennyson's 1854 poem of the same name.
Most of Iron Maiden's lyrics are based on heavy subjects such as history, war, literature, philosophy, mythology and religion. One of the things I enjoy about them the most.

Steve Harris' playing is unique. That 8th/16th gallop beat is just a great driving bassline and wasn't really seen much around the same time. Even if you guys aren't really fans, I respect that you guys give it a fair chance and are legitimately objective even if it isn't for you.
Iron Maidens sound is Steve Harris' galloping bass, he is fantastic. I think the best way to listen to them now is in their live videos. It shows the excitement that you would get from their music when we first heard it all those years ago. Something like Fear of the dark live in Rio shows the power of the band. I first saw Maiden for my 12th birthday at Radio City Music Hall Jan 19th, ‘85. First ever concert. My father was a mostly quiet and reserved man. He noticed how much I was into them, I asked him if we could go see them, and he said “ok”. That’s some Above and beyond Dad effort. God bless him. And God bless all of you’s too. Up The Irons!
I can recommend Infinite dreams for decent production quality and an amazing song. Also Powerslave and the Clairvoyant are great songs and have that groove that you like.
The beauty of Iron Maiden songs is the bass offering a softness to dynamic guitar playing, dynamite drum playing and melodic singing by the incomparable operatic Bruce Dickinson. You should check out one song from each of their albums that you haven't covered. And there are many. While examining these other songs you can compare Steve Di'Anno and Blaze Bayley, the other two singers from the post-1980 Iron Maiden era.

I was 6 years old when this came out and it was a big hit in Australia.....i used to love listening to this hyped up on red cordial and running amok 😂😂😂....never really got into them as I got older but fun memories 🙂
Do Infinite Dreams from the album Seventh Son of The Seventh Son, one of their greatest album. It's a concept album, telling a story in chapters with each song. Musically, might be more of your alley.
Dude check out the Days of Future Past concert videos of the last few days. They're finally playing Alexander the Great live and it's incredible. I can't wait to see them next year when the tour hits the US
This is one of their simpler but trademark songs. Fantastic live, just incredible energy. But I’m more a fan of their more complex compositions like Hallowed be Thy Name, Ancient Mariner etc
The lead singer, Bruce Dickinson, was a history major in uni (university) in England before joining the band. It is really hard to get into uni as a brit. Iron Maiden is the BEST METAL BAND EVER! I get the production issues; I feel the same. But their music, over 44+ years, is the best metal ever. I hope you listen to more and learn to love Maiden. Try Aces High next. WW II historical, short, and rocking!
You are absolutely right. first verse perspective of the idian. second verse perspective of the europeans, third verse was an based of the third part as if they were looking in at the conflict.
Hey man, as a huge maiden fan, even though you haven't really liked any so far, I love the shit out of you guys and your videos. You guy are really down to earth and cool as shit and are respectful as hell towards the artists and always find positives in the music to talk about even when you weren't really able to get into it.
This was the first maiden song I got stuck in my head. I was in 8th grade, 14 years old and bought the number of the beast in 04, the artwork is still great. Maiden should have keep Derek Riggs and someone like Martin Birch.
Of course, I love the popular Maiden tunes but the good stuff is deeper. "To Tame a Land", "Die With Your Boots On", "Flash of the Blade", "Powerslave", 'Back in the Village", 'Still Life".
Iron Maiden did a few historical songs - 'The Trooper' (Crimean war)... 'The Clansman' (Scotland war of independence depicted in 'Braveheart')... 'Alexander the great' (the Macedonian conqueror) ... 'Powerslave' (the Pharoahs of Egypt)... 'Aces High'... 'Tailgunner' (World War II air force fighters) ... etc.
Last album with great drummer Clive Burr. He later recorded with different bands. Including Desperado. A band that also had Dee Snider from Twisted Sister and former Gillan guitarist Bernie Tormé in the band. Was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the 90's. Iron Maiden did some concerts and events to fund Burr like they helped out former singer Paul Di'Anno when he needed a heart surgery. Burr died in 2013 age 56. Spent a lot of years in a wheelchair
Id say a majority of Iron Maiden's lyrics are based on historical events, literary work or philosophical interpretations of war, almost folksy in how well they tell a clear story. Absolutely an incredible live band even to this day, they have great stage energy and some of the coolest stage setups Ive seen to match the song being played. Probably a better live band than recorded honestly, they definitely have a distinct songwriting style they like to stick to so the visuals really add to the experience.
I'm with you, lads. I know Maiden are big and I respect them for that but they never grabbed me that much. Being a prog fan I like the longer songs like Rhyme, Alexander the Great and I think Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is their best. Lyrics wise they are geniuses.

It's interesting to observe, the way Iron Maiden doesn't click with yall. The uptempo galloping rhythm just seems to leave yall cold. I'd think it was the fantasy elements, but you both dig Dio, so it's not that. I'd bet it's the theatricality of the vocals as much as anything, since a number of those type of singers didn't seem to resonate either.
I think that's a spot on analysis. I love Maiden but they're quite corny at times and Dickinson is one of those vocalists where you're either going to be okay with it or totally turned off. Maiden is also one of those bands with a massive discography and people are very much fans of a certain selection of songs--everybody's being different.
Why THIS song was nit your first reaction to them I will never understand. Was my first Maiden song and I have been a lifelong fan. I dont even listen to this one too often anymore, but it was the perfect introduction to them
Also, Mastodon - Crack the Skye...they deserve another try. Drummer sings, deep story about astral projection, Rasputin and the Drummer's (Brann Dailor) sister Skye who committed suicide at age 14. Also killer vocal harmonies and solo

@@Essex626 Pretty much, I think Bruce has solo credit for 3 songs and the rest (only like 10 more) are all partial credit.
You need a car stereo
This is incredible
Life giving
I was 6 years old when this came out and it was a big hit in Australia.....i used to love listening to this hyped up on red cordial and running amok 😂😂😂....never really got into them as I got older but fun memories 🙂
Iron Maiden was one of my history teachers in high school.
Do Infinite Dreams from the album Seventh Son of The Seventh Son, one of their greatest album. It's a concept album, telling a story in chapters with each song. Musically, might be more of your alley.
Iron Maiden is all about history. ACES high- battle of Britian, trooper- the charge of the light brigade, Alexander the great!!!
Do Phantom of the Opera from the first album. My favourite song of all time.
Bruce Dickinson owns a massive collection of war memorabilia. Tanks, planes, everything. Worth looking up.
The live version of The Clansman, and Fear of the Dark are great. Their live albums are 🔥
The clansman to me is theyre best song. So underrated.
So it is and the best idea is to watch the Live Videos, but Not the old ones, only the Videos from the last 20 years
I just typed the same for The Clansman, then I saw someone beat me to it... by two years. Oh Okay.
So... how's that DeLorean running?
Dude check out the Days of Future Past concert videos of the last few days. They're finally playing Alexander the Great live and it's incredible. I can't wait to see them next year when the tour hits the US
I still think Ghost of the Navigator is better with the Rock in Rio version. That whole live album is a masterpiece and was the first I listened to
Was 14 when this came out. Still get the goosebumps ! 🤘 🤘
The first two albums with Paul Di’Anno are raw, punk-ish and ground breaking for the time. I encourage you to give them a listen.
I prefer Paul over Bruce, but they both brought the thunder.
Killers!!!
Women in Uniform is one of my favorite Maiden songs.
You are absolutely right. first verse perspective of the idian. second verse perspective of the europeans, third verse was an based of the third part as if they were looking in at the conflict.
Listen the Paschendale by them
Paschendale is easily one of the best Iron Maiden songs imo - you guys should 100% give it a listen
Great song!! Live must be awesome.
Stranger in a Strange Land from Somewhere in Time has a nice moderate bouncy pace that might be your type of groove. It might just edge your playlist.
Yes
I'm agree and it's my favourite maiden's song
Hey man, as a huge maiden fan, even though you haven't really liked any so far, I love the shit out of you guys and your videos. You guy are really down to earth and cool as shit and are respectful as hell towards the artists and always find positives in the music to talk about even when you weren't really able to get into it.
Whether you dig maiden or not they influenced just about everything metal in the 80's....
One of the best songs of the 80s
This was the first maiden song I got stuck in my head. I was in 8th grade, 14 years old and bought the number of the beast in 04, the artwork is still great. Maiden should have keep Derek Riggs and someone like Martin Birch.
More Iron Maiden awesome group with a ton of good songs
Of course, I love the popular Maiden tunes but the good stuff is deeper. "To Tame a Land", "Die With Your Boots On", "Flash of the Blade", "Powerslave", 'Back in the Village", 'Still Life".
Amen!
Best iron maiden song ever! Music, words and band performance. Perfection.
Wasted Years should be your next Iron Maiden review, it’s a flat out jam from beginning to end. Also, Aces High should be reviewed as well. 🤘🤘😎
'Tailgunner' (World War II air force fighters) ... etc.
I've always said it and I will continue saying it. They should do 2 minutes to midnight.
This definitely didn't age well lol!
One of the greatest songs on one of the greatest albums. Lucky enough to have met them all in 1984.
I'm with you, lads. I know Maiden are big and I respect them for that but they never grabbed me that much. Being a prog fan I like the longer songs like Rhyme, Alexander the Great and I think Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is their best. Lyrics wise they are geniuses.
Love you boys!!! Iron Maiden is my all time favorite band & I love it when you show them love, much respect!!!
You guys show nothing but love when you break the songs down,
Gotta do Childhood's End, one of their best songs
high school ion the eighties, this was one of my favorite psych up song getting warmed up for wrestling matches. nothing like this blasting in a 10'x10' block room.
Time for ‘Disposable Heroes’ by Metallica 🤘
Thank you for jamming Iron Maiden ❤ 🤘🎧 You have to know that I appreciate You guys very much, and yes they are historical singers songwriters musical geniuses and they are pioneers of Heavy Metal 💯🤘🔥📀 They are always great live because they bring such good energy and the fans love them so much 🤘and it's so nice to see how great they jam!🔥💯 Love your channel and your reactions and You guys are great 💯🥰 Rock on and Rock hard 🤘✌️ God Bless You and Yours 🙏✌️🌈
'Wasted Years' is the jam!
Best way to get the true Maiden experience is LIVE
✌️💛🤘
It's interesting to observe, the way Iron Maiden doesn't click with yall. The uptempo galloping rhythm just seems to leave yall cold. I'd think it was the fantasy elements, but you both dig Dio, so it's not that. I'd bet it's the theatricality of the vocals as much as anything, since a number of those type of singers didn't seem to resonate either.
They are listening to the wrong maiden songs.
I dont even listen to this one too often anymore, but it was the perfect introduction to them
Try phantom of the opera by maiden. You guys will love it for its breakdowns and changes.
I loathe most remasters. Maiden has always done their very well, preserving the integrity of the original recordings
Also, Mastodon - Crack the Skye...they deserve another try.
Drummer sings, deep story about astral projection, Rasputin and the Drummer's (Brann Dailor) sister Skye who committed suicide at age 14.
Also killer vocal harmonies and solo
You must have missed the part where Lost in Vegas got friendly with Brann 😂. They're fans now
Last Baron
With Run to the Hills - The drum intro is supposed to mimic a Indian War Dance rhythm or similar to a Pow Wow dance rhythm.
