This song is taken from a poem from Samuel Taylor Coleridge. We read it in High School for British Literature and my teacher let me bring in this song and play it in class. If you pay close attention to the lyrics it teaches a moral.
Steve Harris writes most of the songs and is a history geek :) Ok not have the "I love you miss you..." loopz like in many other musical acts.. it's there but.. yeah
I had the same experience in my junior year high school English class. Of course at that time the song was only a couple of years old so outside of the metal community it was not well known.
The most fascinating thing to me is how everyone in the music industry regardless of genre has mad respect for Iron Maiden. In the music world they're more legendary than even The Rolling Stones or The Beatles. It's crazy how iconic they are.
@@jonlate4581 I've seen many musicians and bands from all over the industry show respect for Iron Maiden. Even seen non metal band members wearing Iron Maiden shirts. So they're definitely iconic.
I would argue that the "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame" do not have respect for them due to Bruce stating that they would not know Rock & Roll if it hit them in their face (which is supported by some of the dodgy choices the Hall of Fame have made over the years).
These lyrics are inspired by the epic poem of the same name by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, from 1798. it's one of many examples of the great interest in literature held by Iron Maiden's bassist, leader and chief songwriter Steve Harris. The literary works he has written songs about include, but aren't limited to, Joseph Conrad's "The heart of darkness" ("The edge of darkness"), Edgar Allan Poes "Murders in the Rue Morgue", William Golding's "Lord of the flies", Frank Herbert's "Dune" ("To tame a land") and Alistair MacLean's "Where eagles dare". Oh yeah - and Gaston Leroux' "Phantom of the Opera", predating Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical. When this song was first released in 1984, it was unheard of that a heavy metal band should do a 13 and a half minute epic. But Steve Harris was inspired by early progressive rock like Genesis, so he just decided to do what they did, only in heavy metal style. This in turn inspired many successors to follow in his path. The most famous example, at least in Europe, would be German power metal pioneers Helloween, who released no less than two similarly styled 13 minute epics of their own, both ending up as colossal classics: "Halloween" and "Keeper of the seven keys", in 1987 and 1988 respectively.
Iron Maiden has the the largest fan base to not being played over the radio waves...very talented band full of energy and passion in what they are doing..great job reacting girls
so many iron maidens songs are stories, a history lesson in themselves. this song comes from an album called power slave the albums cover had an egyptian theme. it came out in 1984
The poem is by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, when Coleridge wad a boy at school one of his teachers was a former sailor. During class he would regale the boys with stories of the sea, these stories led a young Coleridge in later life to write the Rhyme of the ancient mariner. This song is based on Cooks 3rd.voyage to the Pacific.
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, it got an obstinate little Dutch 14-year metalhead like me into old English Literature :)
Check out "Fear of the Dark" from live concert Rock in Rio 2001. Or any song really from that concert. One of the best live concerts I've seen from them.
Makes every school kid impress their English teacher when you start spouting Samuel Taylor Coleridge.........one of many famous works Iron Maiden have worked into their songs
The poem was published in 1798 . Another Coleridge poem Kubla Khan was used by rush for Xanadu . It is crazy that Iron Maiden have been going since 1975 , can remember seeing then in there early years in pubs in London . They always had something special about them even in the early days .
I'm going too see Iron Maiden in a few days, 4th of September in Australia 😊 some say the poem was inspired by Captain Cook's expedition too Australia around 1770. The mariner shouldn't have shot the albatross that had guided them out of the pack ice near Antarctica. The bird put a curse on the ship and 200 sailors died of thirst. After the sailors had died the albatross lifted the curse and down came the rain. The mariner lived too tell his story and you should be kind too all of gods creatures. Best live band ever
three generations and a good taste of music... i see a light on the horizon :D This is my favorite song from them, so glad you enjoyed it. greets from germany
Love Iron Maiden, been a fan since the 80's, saw them on the Piece of Mind Tour, anything from Rock in Rio concert is recommended "Blood Brothers" maybe next?
I seen iron Maiden in the 80's, and they was a well established super group back then. This was a great request! The lead singer wears many hats, and even pilots their jumbo Jet on Tour. Songs off of Number of the Beast would be great to see you react to. I love that Lulu is getting all this exposure to so many great bands. 🤘
i first heard this song when i was ten having been gifted tickets to the World Slavery Tour, I must admit Iron Maiden got me into classic literature and history as i was so intrigued by the subjects of their songs... I picked up the copy of Coleridge's complete works with in a month of that concert, it was difficult to read at that age, so i looked through to find easier looking ones and worked up to it. so many i learned du to being inspired by this band.
Iron Maiden storytelling is unparalleled. I love this band from the first album and managed to see them five times live over the years Unforgettable. Up the irons. Keep up the great work ladies👍🖖🍻🇨🇦
Phones are forbidden in a lot of arenas. So we still bring lighters. In fact they sell them in the booths before you enter the arena. Suggestions for Iron Maiden songs? They are all epic but I would say Dance Of Death, Fear Of The Dark and The Clansman. Live versions of course.
That necklace reminds me abit of the necklace that Kate Winslet wore in the movie Titanic,it also had some blue in the center. I like Iron Maiden too,but i zoned out over Lulus package. Good to see you back,i started to wonder seeing all the weird videos that popped up,but i saw you writing in the comments on 1 of them.
Iron Maiden is always best live and most of their songs are old poetry, stories, literature presented in their interpretation. Singer Bruce Dickinson is an awesome read. He flies their chartered Jet, he's an Olympic Fencer, Public Speaker, Poet and cancer survivor...I may be missing things he's done or does
One of my favorites, saw them in 80's at Long Beach Arena. Besides this one with is based on a poem, they have other songs based on history and mythology.
It's maidens jam to tell stories and often based on existing stories or historical events. One of the awesome things about their music. UP THE IRONS!!! 🤘🤘
ANY TIME you gals do Iron Maiden...people will tune in. I know for sure I will. Been a fan of theirs since 1980 or 81 when i was just a weeee little lad!!! Lyrically they are more sophisticated than most metal bands. But a few of them are very educated. Great reaction and keep em' coming! Have a great weekend ladies. 🍻🤟👏
"Iron Maiden is the most creative and complete band ever, because their constantly genius changes in the same music! That´s what differs from others bands!"
I had the same experience as another commenter that we read this in high school and the teacher allowed us to bring in the cassette tape, yes I said cassette tape, to listen to the song. They are still going strong today with the drummer Nico McBrian being the oldest at 71 and singer Bruce Dickinson being the youngest at 65. I will be seeing them in concert this October in Tacoma Washington. I have seen them several times the first being my senior year of high school 1991.
This song was based on the late 18th century poem of the same name by British poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge... it depicted the myth of the Albatross as a 'bird of omen'... Bassist Steve Harris had written some epic songs for Iron Maiden, but 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' was their most ambitious epic track by 1984 and closed out the 'Powerslave' album... It was played in entirety on their 1984/ '85 tour and again on their 2008 'Flight 666' tour when the 'Powerslave' album and stage set were revisited. Beyond that record, Iron Maiden would venture into more progressive, longer songs ('Rime of the Ancient Mariner' was 13+ minutes in length) in 1995... 'Sign of the cross' was 11 minutes long... 'For the greater good of God' was 9 min... 'The red and the black' was 13+ min... and their longest track 'Empire of the clouds' was 18 minutes in length 🤘🤘
My son and I was there in jersey, his first concert. We are in the documentary at 1 hour and 32 minutes in long-haired little blonde boy, myself and my sweet white Ford Taurus wagon !
Welcome to the MAIDEN Family. I saw this exact this tour back in May 2008 in Irvine, CA. The huge treat for the fans was them playing this huge epic of a song. Maiden had not played it live since the World Slavery Tour back in 84/85. I can remember as a 13 year old teen buying the Powerslave record when it was released and listening to it for the first time. The entire record is a masterpiece, but the real gift was getting to the last track of the record which was RotAM. I remember almost ruining my record because when it came to the section of the song (16:47 of your reaction) after the solos and Maiden then goes into the 3 progression thing with the drummer and after the third one a total changeup. When my 13 year old ears heard that changeup I immediately picked the needle up and moved it back. I must of did that like 20 times almost scratching the hell out of my new record, lol. Luckily I did not. Anyways, now that I have aged myself great reaction and "Up the IRONS!" 🤘🤘
To me in this era that tell stories to knelt music brilliantly - Iron Maidan and Nightwish. Both are exceptional live bands with the two best vocalists alive.
This presentation is phenomenal but the best of all is 22 Acacia Avenue (Live Hammersmith 1982) HD with drummer Clive Burr. There you will appreciate every sound, the audio is great... Oh and it has a model acting like the girl in question. It will blow your ears. See it for your own pleasure
TH-cam has a video of Sir Ian McKellen reading the original full poem, runs about 30 minutes. Search for "Ian McKellan reads "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge"
Granny's on to it. A centuries old poem put to music to tell a story. Iron Maiden are absolute masters at writing songs based on factual historical events, mythology, sciences, biblical stories etc. No one...NO ONE...does it better than Iron Maiden.
You are all 3 lovely ladies and seeing you react to one of the most epic Maiden song which indeed is inspired from a poem is definitely wonderful. Hope you get to hear and react to more Maiden songs, it's absolutely worth it.
I was at this show! The whole show was great, but this was definitely the highlight. Y'all should definitely go check them out on their tour later this year if you have the chance, they still rock.
Also, my suggestion for the next pick would be Fear of the Dark from their En Vivo live video/album. That concert is a great cross-section of their career, you could just work your way through it one song at a time and never go wrong. My personal favorite is 2 Minutes 2 Midnight, but Fear of the Dark is the one that really gets the crowd going.
IRON MAIDEN Line-up 2008 Bruce Dickinson: Vocals Dave Murray: Rhythm & Lead Guitars Adrian Smith: Rhythm & Lead Guitars Janick Gers: Rhythm & Lead Guitars Nicko McBrain: Drums Cheers from CHILE!!!
Greatest maiden song imo. My fave. Love the story and all the different riffs. A masterpiece. Tied for greatest composition along with metallicas ONE, skynyrds FREEBIRD and Queens BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY. Again in my opinion is all
Up the Irons ⚒️⚒️⚒️.....long story.... i know these guys..... have since late 70s....most humble guys ever.... true rockers....up the Irons...AND come on you "Ammers" ⚒️⚒️
The mariners ship didn't sink. The curse of the albatross set the mariner free (to carry on the lesson)... by sacrificing the pilot boat, the pilot, and his son. Appreciate watchung you folks discover the storytelling of Iron maiden.
The ship was trapped without wind to push the sails and the Mariner thought it was the albatross bringing bad luck so the Mariner Killed the albatross (the bird of good omen to sailors) at first his shipmates cried out against what he had done but when the fog cleared and the wind returned they justified the killing therefore making them part of the curse The Ghost ship came over the line and claimed the lives of the 200 aboard the ship leaving only the Mariner to face the curse Only when the Mariner repented was he released from the curse and allowed to go home but he was forever bound to tell his story so that others may learn the value of all life...hence the wedding guest *heavily condensed version 😊😊🤘 Up The Irons!
Around the world, very few people read an entire book, nowadays kids have a very limited vocabulary due all of the garbage they consume. Thanks dad for making reading one of my favorite things to do
You need to react to other Maiden classics like Run to the Hills, Be quick or be Dead, Number of the Beast, Can I play with Madness, The Trooper, 2 minutes to Midnight, Holy Smoke and TONS More - Iron Maiden Forever Up The Irons 🤘🤘
« That’s the biggest drum set I have never seen ». You have not seen Neil Peart drum set. The professor drum set is simply out of this world. If you ever want to react to one of the greatest Canadian band it is Rush. Long live your channel. Cheers 🥂
Well ladies...NOW y'all MUST check out Maiden's 2015 EPIC "Empire Of the Clouds"....it's even longer than Rime and actually has Bruce on KEYBOARDS! Thank me later and keep rocking!
The thing about iron maiden that you get a history lesson at the same time have a listen to Alexander the great great tune this is a massive Rabbit hole you will fall down they one of greatest bands out there have a look at flight 666 it's a documentary about the band
10:13 Nicko McBrain is the least known member of Iron Maiden. Concert-goers seldom see his face as he buries himself behind a mountain of drums. And believe me, they are not there just for decoration. He plays all of them. Sometimes he plays shirtless, sometime, as in this case, barefooted, and no one knows if not for the camera. I guess they don't call him "The Mad" Nicko McBrain for nothing.

I don't know about all that, but for a metal band, a genre that's sorely overlooked, they are at the top of the heap.
Nobody remembers The Rolling Stones (unfortunely), but no band will EVER be as famous as The Beatles. @@jonlate4581

Maiden is known for referencing classic literature. This was the actual poem word for word and not an easy one to put to music.
Great choice. Fun fact ... the lead singer flies the band's jet liner to the shows. Iron Maiden ROCKS.
Not any more Bruce is 65. He also had hip replacements done during covid
not anymore. he's past 60 and by law he cannot.

Burnt my fingers many times doing that l o l
A lot of Iron Maiden's songs are from history, war & battles of the world. The Bassist, Steve Harris wrote most of lyrics to their songs.

The ship was trapped without wind to push the sails and the Mariner thought it was the albatross bringing bad luck so the Mariner Killed the albatross (the bird of good omen to sailors) at first his shipmates cried out against what he had done but when the fog cleared and the wind returned they justified the killing therefore making them part of the curse
The Ghost ship came over the line and claimed the lives of the 200 aboard the ship leaving only the Mariner to face the curse
Only when the Mariner repented was he released from the curse and allowed to go home but he was forever bound to tell his story so that others may learn the value of all life...hence the wedding guest
*heavily condensed version 😊😊🤘 Up The Irons!
Around the world, very few people read an entire book, nowadays kids have a very limited vocabulary due all of the garbage they consume. Thanks dad for making reading one of my favorite things to do

« That’s the biggest drum set I have never seen ». You have not seen Neil Peart drum set. The professor drum set is simply out of this world. If you ever want to react to one of the greatest Canadian band it is Rush. Long live your channel. Cheers 🥂
