    Ian, Thank you for your 914 videos. We have a project 1975 914 that has parked for 30 years. After watching each of your video playlists, I have been eager to begin the project. Currently tackling the rust spots (not to bad, just in all the common places) and trying my hand at some bodywork. I appreciate the mentioning of the Bug me Video series, such a great DVD for a very novice mechanic like me. Again, I wanted to thank you.

      Hi James. Glad I could help. Sorry it's been a while since the last episode. I've been shooting everything, but am really behind in editing...mostly because I moved and that took all of my time for the past several months!

    I'm in the middle of building a 2056 too. Great idea for buying a assembly DVD from Jake; I just ordered one for myself. Good luck with the build. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. :)

    Ian, good to see you've got your parts/case. I ended up getting the same cam gear with the recessed bolts to clear my
    Schadek oil pump. I agree about the video. I know it's a little dated but man, I'd be lost without it. I will say that the clearances are a lot tighter when you move to a 2.3L I ended up sending my case back to Fat Performance/Rimco to have additional clearance work done. You might finish your build before mine :).

      Thanks, Fred. Can't wait to get started with the assembly... your 2.3 is gonna rock

    I’m putting a Webcam 86a cam in my 1,911 né 1.8. It has .435 lift intake and exhaust and 200 degrees duration for same. What does your 95 have.
    Doing NDT in a machine shop I’ve found that those blue plastic covers go on about everything fairly small before shipping. Ours are red. Glad I found this number one; number 8 was the only one to show up on my feed.

    Ian - after looking at hundreds of 914’s I found a one owner with 34m original miles about 3 years ago. 1975 1.8L Same year I graduated high school. Thanks for filming your knowledge for all of us novices to enjoy and learn from you. We really appreciate it! Which portable scissor lift do you sponsor/recommend? I’ve only put 600 miles on it in 3 years but recently retired so it’s time to dive in and enjoy the car much more including servicing and and being able to crawl under safely.

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Steven. Glad you like the videos. I use a quickjack, as it's super easy to use, portable and works with low ceiling garages. Others have used mid-rise scissor lifts, but I don't have a recco on those... Enjoy and be safe!

    I have followed all of your videos as you get closer and closer to the goal! Great job Ian, and thank you for sharing with us! Question regarding getting the whole crank/rod assembly balanced, will that include the pistons, as well? Oh, one more thing, what about the cut on the thrust bearing saddle?

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Chris. Please subscribe if you haven't already. Yes, all rotating bits were balanced. Jorge at European Motor Works made sure my align bore was correct and the bearings fit. You might want to ask him about the thrust.

    EMX are brilliant for Type4 performance parts and machining too! Just curious why you didn't get EMX to deck your block too instead of sending to two different machine shops? I'm really keen to know what mix is used for the exterior black coating on your heads?
    I got confused when you were saying left and right side of the case because in a bus or 411 it's opposite way around lol. We build lots of performance street Type4's too and I think that "How to rebuild your Type4" video has a few steps missing and a few things to watch out for missing too so I wouldn't treat it as a complete manual for how yo rebuild your Type4 engine. Please keep the videos coming through. Great work your doing for the Type4 scene :)

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Matthew. I sent my case to Len to deck it, and he determined that it needed to be align-bored. He doesn't offer that service, so he sent it to EMW. For the head coating, reach out to Len Hoffman at Hoffman Automotive Machine. Agree that the video has a few steps missing (setting deck height, valve geometry, etc.) but I'm covering that in future episodes. If there are other things to watch out for, please let me know so I can share with the community....Thanks!

    Did you not have to send the brass crank gear for the distributor drive to be turned when align-bore was done. I worked for Porsche/VW dealership in Canada and all machine work was done at Volkswagen Canada in Toronto and brass gear had to be supplied with case.

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't. But it's possible Jorge at EMW used one when doing the work. Not exactly sure why it would be necessary though....

    Hi Ian, looking to do something similar myself, but being based in the UK may not be able to get the same parts etc.. one question and apologies if I have missed on an earlier episode. Was there a reason you didn't re-use the existing heads? Looking forward to catching up with the rest of your build soon.

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Jonny...great question. Once I realized I had to rebuild the engine from the ground up, it made more sense to go with new heads. The originals are nearly 50 years old and who knows how many heat cycles they've been through or how many cracks they have. The pro head guys like Len Hoffman stopped rebuilding OEM heads years ago. Check out the interview with him in the third (I believe) engine episode...and the extended one with him on www.patreon.com/iankarr.

    Your videos are excellent. I'm rebuilding a 1974 1.8 liter. BTW, is the cam setting/timing the same for a 1.8 as it is with your 2.0? Thanks, Gary

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Gary! I believe the cam is set the same way, with the dot indexed between the two dots on the crank. Timing is a bit different. Best to consult a Haynes or other manual for more info.

    • @garyfits
      @garyfits 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IanKarr Thanks for this. Your video on the relationship to the cam and gear describes what I have done when I attached the two together. I'm just a bit nervous about putting the two parts of the case together have it be wrong. My next anxiety is putting in the distributer so that it meets the gear on the crank correctly...your video describes this really well.

      Shuffle pinning is not usually needled for 2056cc builds.

    I'm always a bit puzzled as to why so few people build these. The vast majority of videos I see are Type 1s. (Not a VW expert.)
    I'm also curious as to how much displacement you can squeeze out of one of these without too much machining (i.e., notching the bottom of the bores and not much else).

    • @IanKarr
      @IanKarr  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The 2056 I'm building is a common / proven configuration which doesn't require any machining, except maybe rockers to accommodate swivels. With these HAM heads and the EFI I plan on installing, I'm hoping for 120HP which is a nice 20%+ bump over stock. Plenty of people have built 2270s, but definitely more work...and heat becomes a bigger issue. Anything bigger than 2056 and you probably need to run an additional oil cooler.
