  • I have been waiting for this tool for many months. The Gerber Dual Force is finally available on Gerber's website (Out of stock atm) and will be available to secondary retailers soon. I did a brief comparison to the Leatherman Surge, but I will do a far more in depth review in the near future.
NOTE: this was purchased with my own money!

This is honestly one of the most exciting multitools I've seen in a long time and will be getting one. The increase in plier leverage with the slip joint will be awesome I think and the use of stamped parts instead of casting will probably significantly increase the strength of the plier head. Good stuff!

I just received mine today. I plan to push it hard next to my Surge.
I know folks often pair a Crunch with the Leatherman. I'm really thinking that putting the Dual Force with the Surge along with a 5in Knipex and there's no need for the crunch in that. I'll be uploading my initial tests soon, but plan to do several updates in the months to come.
As it is now, I give it a 7-7.5/10. I don't think it's a Surge killer, honestly, but I think it's a good secondary to it!

I feel like in regards to edc, I love the needle nose plier on my charge. However, out on a job I feel like the "nut plier portion" isn't enough on my charge. Typically I'll gravitate to a more dedicated plier that I can beat up and won't stress if it fails. The price point and functionality of this gerber seams like a great move 👍

The Surge has the one advantage of experience in this situation. It’s been put to the meat grinder for years and proves reliable. The Dual Force is new, needs to be truly pushed to its limits in order for this to be considered a challenger of the Surge. You’ve got me interested in this debate now.
I use a Surge regularly for any task I can, and it’s taken darn near everything I throw at it. My main question, one that everyone should ask: Can the Dual Force take the same kind of punishment and keep on going? Only time will tell

I am using three different ones the Center Drive Plus, Leatherman Curl and the SOG Power Pint. I rotate through based on what I am doing. The Leatherman Curl has a Bit Kit with extension and I carry a Kershaw Chill for a knife. The Center Drive Plus comes with the Bit so I added a Gerber EVO with it. The SOG I like the best just for the small size if I know that I am not going to be working with it. I do like the dual force but for different things the slip joints pliers are great and I like the surge but once you add everything to it then the the weight is a problem. I had Roxon multi pliers and knife were you can change the blades. Add all the pieces up six blades the knife and the multi tool it weighs a ton. The just sold it all on eBay.

I just got mine and used it for a bit at work. The handle play is really, really annoying when using the screwdriver or knife. The file also doesn’t work particularly well on the small bolt I tried it on, the Surge file or Charge file worked much better. I didn’t use the chisel but it’s probably okay for light scrapping. It’s also missing an awl which is great for starting holes for wood screws or cleaning out small rusted holes. Also, the gap at the pliers end is considerably annoying and doesn’t fit my hand well. The ergonomics of the tool seem to be off.
The pliers though worked really well on a couple of larger bolts that would have given the Surge an issue. I know because I’ve tried to use the Surge pliers on them before which is why I now have an adjustable wrench around. So the pliers may make a difference to some people.
My initial impressions are that it’s a good set of pliers and a decent screwdriver but that’s it. The Surge offers so much more in terms of flexibility that I doubt the Dual Force becomes a carry for me at all.

    Hey! Mine just arrived!
I'm just opening it up and went straight to the driver, as it's one of the key reasons I went after this tool. Obviously I also wanted the pliers. :)
First, I should say, I think I'm going to love this tool just based on basic impression and what I've seen.
    BUT ...
I think I found a 'miss.' Or at least what feels like a miss for my purposes.
The socket for the driver is too shallow. What's "too" shallow?
I recently picked up some Wiha duel bits that I LOVE. They have a great range of tips and are only 30mm long. Considering it's got bits on each end, that's impressive to me.
I also own a Gerber Armbar and have really enjoyed it. I swapped out the dual bit that comes with it for one of the Wiha duel bits and it even closes!
So now for the shallow/depth issue.
The depth of the socket on the Duel Force is only 9mm. :\.
It's so shallow in fact that the Wiha duel bits can't sit far enough in for the shank to connect with the hex socket. It just spins around(the head is 10.5mm).
The Armbar driver socket depth is 14mm. That feels cavernous now. :)
The duel bit that came with the Armbar is about 27.5mm in length, so just 2.5mm shorter than the Wiha bits.
Continuing on that theme the extra bit holders can only close with bits shorter than 28.5mm.
Like I said, I think I'm going to love this tool, but I really hope Gerber changes this. If they do, I'd love to get a replacement driver. :)
Really curious to hear your take on this!
I'd even happily donate a set of Wiha duel bits to the channel so you can check it out yourself. :)

Seeing you handle this makes me think, on a philosophical level, what makes an EDC multitool. I’m not sure if this is necessarily an EDC tool. This seems like a tool someone would carry who specifically needs the tool, like plumbers/HVAC, or a tool to keep in the car that can get some serious work done. Am I wrong? Just seems like a lot, even for those that like big multitools (as a stagehand, I never thought I’d say that, lol)

A great design for someone interested in a BIG multitool.....With the center drive, chisel, and unique plier head....Perhaps better compared to LM Crunch for gripping power.... Sould be good for plumbers or HVAC techs, if build quality is there....I guess they chose China to keep price point down....or else it would be on par cost wise with the other tools you showed. I like a smaller LM with a Knipex Cobra....

Hello Dominic - Good review! I think this is a job-specific tool...I agree it can be combined with other tools on a job site...it doesn't appear to be as solid as a 300, the Swisstool or the Surge...I am concerned with the plier head, it doesn't look substantial - I don't think it would break, but it might bend or twist under heavy use...then again, these comments are based on mere observation, testing as you plan on doing, will determine if this tool has the "right stuff"...or not...thanks!

Wish they lost the thumb hole on the file and have the grooves all the way down, waste of file real estate. Also I prefer a solid plier head rather than laminated, much stronger. There's a reason why knipex, channellock, snap on and so on don't waste their time with laminated. Also would have been nice if they used double ended bits and the 2 bit holders could have been actual bit drivers so you can use them in tight spaces. Typicacal gerber, great idea but only 70% executed.
