One of the things that has bothered me the most about leatherman is that despite the high prices, 90% of their tools use 420hc including the top dogs like the p4, surge, and wave. I think 154cm should be the minimum standard for tools in this price range.

Yeah it’s strange that my surge wire cutters have in theory better steel than the blades.
And did anyone else get their main blade really recurved ? Lol QC is amazing these days.

A great show on comparison mate. There is nothing wrong with clones/low end multitools. We just need to use it wisely & know its limitation. Bought a few less expensive multitools & take them apart at which later we customised to suit our needs, making it more functional & performs much better than Leatherman by far. Have a great festive season & hopefully to see more of your amazing mod/customisation work in the new year. Cheers mate.! Greetings from Australia.

I might need to try out the Signal/Wave clone it looks really interesting and worth a look. One of my favorite multi tool is actually a tool that was only sold at Menards which is a store mostly found in the Midwest. A couple of years ago Menards discontinued the tool and clearance the tool for a bit more than $10 so I bought a couple extra to have later.

Great discussion! I’m a huge Leatherman fan and love the Wave platform! Over the last year, I have purchased 12 Wave clones. I’m lovin’ the two new models from Bi / Bury. Yes, I would love to see a regular blade on that new Bi / Bury! It will be interesting to see what happens over the next 12 months! I think it’s a huge wake up call for Leatherman to innovate! Leatherman should be leading the pack with a dozen different versions of the Wave! The real kick in the ass for Leatherman, was when the Multiforce was released with the 1/4 inch driver. Leatherman’s proprietary bits suck! Keep up the great work!

  • @christophersalankey4313
    @christophersalankey4313 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I have been rocking a Diacamping DL1 for a few months, and I absolutely love it! The DL1 is the "upgraded" clone that has a large outside scissor in place of the file and an awl in place of the inside scissors. In my opinion it's got the best tool set possible (I only wish it had a micro bit driver and not the fixed micro flat driver...which I changed to a sim card tool),
I'll take the DL1 over any wave any day.

I got a DL1 and its pretty damn poor. I think QC is a problem, I can barely open my knife and it doesnt want to lock, had to make it quite loose to even get movement and my scissors just refuse to work consistenly. If it was better quality it would be absolutely awesome.

When the original PST came out in 1983, it was $45. $45 in 1983 is about $115 in today's money.

Was waiting for that last bibury review! really interesting clone design indeed. thank you for the video.
I'm really surprised on how far and how cheap these clones are coming. I believe that in less than couple of years leatherman will be forced to innovate and revolutionize the multiool market just to keep up with the chinese clones. I wonder if any other leatherman model will expire its patent soon... (maybe the crunch?)
I'm currently using a swiss+tech clone along with my wave +. I really appreciate the freedom it gives me to try new things and mods without worrying damaging the expensive wave. If I had to give a gift to a friend those clones would be a bang for the buck.

main appeal of the og wave? the warranty. I just sent mine in warranty because after 5-6 years the main pivot worked itself loose and the wire cutter was not working anymore, they sent it back with new jaws and new blades + scissors, which I didn't even think would need replacing, no questions asked.

Well, I bought a the B/Bury and also own a Victorinox Spirit X which is probably the nicest multitool you can buy. I also own an older Freestyle CX Leatherman which I love. BUT I have to say that the B/Bury seems like it can do everything the more expensive tools, especially the leathermans. The Victorinox are another level in my opinion as far as build, but the Leatherman's don't really feel that special in the hand in my opinion.

Multi-tools get lost/stolen too. I had a brand new > $100 Leatherman stolen that I bought & carried to be helpful to someone in a jam. Which I often encountered as I only get around town by walking & biking.
That steered me away from mult-tools. A whole tool set vanished. The most important thing I've learned from former military personnel who do survival videos is don't have your life depend on ONE tool. The saying is "One of something is none of something."
Proprietary lock-in is a big consideration. I think a bigger one than having a backup. I only begrudgingly go proprietary if there's a significant improvement in performance/functionality that I need.

Both of these are now $29 right now. I don't recall it being that cheap before. But that's literally insane value. I ended up just buying the Leatherman Curl since I don't need a saw and would prefer a lighter tool. But good god, that's so crazy how close they are in cloning.

The first multi-tool I bought was a Gerber and I regretted not paying more to buy a Leatherman PST. I did my research, primarily on Amazon reviews, and I was happy with my next purchases except for the SOG I bought many years ago. Now I look at Leatherman tools and I think 'where is the value in these things?' When I buy something - and I get this from both of my parents - it pleases me the most when I get a quality product for a good price. You can't get that anymore from Victorinox and Leatherman. I very recently bought some SOG Powerlitres directly from SOG and the price had been reduced from $65 to $52 and SOG gave me another 10% discount on top of the already discounted price. That made each SOG Powerlitre about $47. Now the can opener is horrible on the Powerlitre and the scissors could be better but otherwise the SOG Powerlitre is a pretty good product and I got that product at a really really good price. That's how I see these Wave copies from China too (although you'll have to prove to me how reliable the hammer is and whether the ferrocium rod works on the Bibury). Although a lot of the features on that Bibury camping tool look like they were derived from the Leatherman Signal and Surge you have to hand it to the Chinese for putting it all together in an original way at a price that makes it look like a really good value. You're right Dom it's good the Chinese are competing directly with Leatherman and Ruike knives is competing directly with Victorinox. It seems like organized crime has taken over Leatherman and Victorinox. Thanks for the video but it would be nice if someone like Corporals Corner and/or Junkyard Fox 'take the Bibury camping tool through it's paces.' Best wishes.

What I really want to know I'd if the tools on the clones are parts compatible with the wave. My large flat head is usually the first thing to go and while I can send it in for warranty, if I decided to mod some part of it, I wouldn't be able to. I'd also like the option for a t-shank and the third party t-shank or even a spare t-shank holder are more than the cost of one of these clones. Also, I'm personally a fan of the standard flat bit. Id love to put the flat but holder on other smaller multitools.

The economics of clones got even better this morning. The Wave+ went up $10, as did the Signal. I couldn’t tell if others went up, but I suspect at least some others did. The Bond is still $60. Bought 2 of the Bibury 19-in-1. Both are smoother and heavier than the Surges I bought for 5 times the price. I lost 2 Leatherman's in the last 4 years so I paid 450 for 3 essentially. In the same time I would have spent 75 on 3 Biburys. Maybe the blades will wear out faster but probably not, but even if they do... ill buy another for 25 on Amazon or.... get this... SHARPEN IT... LOL. Goodbye Leatherman.

I like the idea of getting a clone, to see if you will actually use the tool. Let's face it, if you get the inexpensive version of the tool, and you never take it out of your pocket; you wasted that money. Now, if you use it everyday, then maybe think about investing in a higher quality version.
That's why clones CAN BE good.

Hate to break it to you but true inflation has been around 18% a year for a while now. Companies have to pull a lot of tricks to make it seem like our dollar isn’t almost worthless. The tool you think should cost $150 would actually go for ~$400.

Funny thing here is I purchased the Leatherman Rebar because I didn’t want to deal with non standard bits and I also found a craftsman mini ratchet that accepts 1/4” hex bits. Not perfect but a pretty good substitute. I was so close to buying the wave. But I also have a van full of tools if it gets too big or rough for what’s in my pocket.
But these clones might be worth a good hard look. Especially with the bit extender.

Of the clones you showcased which one do you like the best? You and others Ytubers have talked about the OZ Multiforce quite a bit. I had never heard of the Flissa before and the reviews on Amazon are only OK. I had seen one or two Bibury tools, but not the ones you showcased. Assuming I'm not going to start collecting all the clones and just want one, which one would you recommend? Or should I save up and get an actual Wave if this is probably going to be my only multitool? Thanks for the video!

I've purchased a couple clones/knock-offs this year. I purchased an Alonefire S11 instead of the Rovyvon A5x, it's battery died after a year. One my son owned stopped working after 3 weeks.
I purchased a knock-off Spyderco Delica. Good package opener, but I feel like it is going to break at the hinge if I try to even do something as simple as sharpening the end of a stick.
All that to say, clones aren't always bad, but it does feel like a gamble with quality.
Where clones thrive though, is they allow you to test-drive that type of tool to see if you really use it everyday.
I used my S11 flashlight multiple times a day. I now know it wouldn't be a waste of my money to upgrade to the Rovyvon.
The fake Spyderco let me learn that I disliked that blade shape and I later purchased a Victorinox pioneer x, which I enjoy way more.

I own a wave plus. I got a multiforce and frankly I think it is better. The wave is less fat because of the flat bits and the file is a little better. However, I hate the flat bits. The multiforce uses real bits and extensions, the blades are on the ends of the arms instead of the plier joints which is so much better, and the scissors are superior. Plus the price is lower. My Leatherman rebar has no equal yet to me. The old school two handed clamshell Leatherman tools are still where they excel IMHO. The competition is all over waves and signals though. My Leatherman skeletool got a lot of pocket time until I got a SOG Powerpint which is now my most often carried multitool.

Tim Leatherman was a fool to increase the prices of his multitools, also foolish in not renewing the patent on his Wave because that multitool was his company's greatest seller. So I am not surprised these clones have entered the market. My collection of SAKs is pretty big now including a Ranger Grip 79, but I still have the Leatherman Wave and Surge, though over the years I modified them to suit my bushcrafting hobby whenever we go on vacation. You did a fair review. Still, I distrust clones because they cannot be entirely relied on, but many people have a limited amounts of money to afford the real McCoy.

If the patent on the Wave has run its course, are the flat bits out of time as well? If a tool company like Wiha could release properly hardened bits that fit the Leatherman drivers and have them individually available, they'd make a killing. If Leatherman has no interest in fixing the issue...
Leatherman at this point just seem content to make money exploiting the faith and goodwill they've built up over the years by actually providing good tools at a good value for money, gouging customers for everything they're worth now days.

I got myself a Leatherman Wave Clone, it was the Daicamping DL12 (I think) from Aliexpress, shortly after placing the order I managed to acquire a Leatherman Wave Plus for an irresistible bargain price. Comparing them, the clone has two stand out features which for me personally are major wins, that's the outside accessible scissors and the 1/4" bit driver. The bit driver whilst not great, it's easy to solve the issues with a magnet. The quality of the materials and the fit and finish on the Leatherman completely out does the clone though. It just feels nicer and softer in the hand. I will likely modify the clone and remove the linear locks for the blades, so it becomes a UK legal carry, and perhaps use it as something to tinker with.
