  • I interview Chai from Holland who tells a story about a tragic death that he witnessed while travelling through Thailand and Laos. The story takes place in Vientiane, the capital city of Laos. Chai describes how he found a dead body in a hostel late one night and what happened after when the police arrived.

Sounds to me like the poor guy suffered a massive hemorrhage in his stomach or elewhere in his GI system. Black vomit would usually indicate internal (GI) bleeding. The blood gets oxidized in there and turns black. So it might not have been drugs at all... he might have had ongoing GI problems.

It’s an all-too-common backpacker tale: you’re staying in some rundown hostel, trying to mind your own business-then Daffy Duck dies in the room next door. Tell Chai to come to Scruffy’s tonight and I’ll buy him a pint!

Great comment here. Pete deals with the humanity of the adventure as opposed to the flashing lights and tasty food. It’s all part of the complexity of the experience there. Pete fills this space in a respectful manner without any additional drama as life provides it’s own drama.

Rainy season coming early this year to Bangkok. Congrats on the 10K Pete! I have seen a few fatalities in Thailand, mostly from motorcycle accidents. Not a pretty sight. Always wear a helmet. Nothing like this on my channel Pete but, it feels (in a weird way) good to have talked about it.

I did opium in Bangkok for a month. 20 years ago. Most of the teachers I worked with smoked weed, drank alcohol and did pharmaceuticals. I've seen lots of death in Thailand but most from bike crashes. I couldn't count how many, there were that much. People think because they only drink they obtain the moral high ground over other people's choices.

That snore he descibes at the start is an interesting detail. Agonal Breathing is the medical term for the gasping that people do when they're struggling to breathe because of cardiac arrest etc.
It is very distictive, if you have heard it before, and was probably the time he may have been saved. I can understand how a young, non medical person can just pass it off as something weird. Sadly before my father passed away from cancer he was snoring in a similar way.

  • @riepkodevries3360
    @riepkodevries3360 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I have been in a situation that is quite similar, except from the important fact that I was in my own country when it happened.
I don't know what specific details made it traumatic for Chai, but in my case it was the fact that I heard the person screaming very strangely just before dying, and only realising this the next day after the dead body was found by someone else. Because I didn't knew the person so well, I also decided to stay out of the situation as much as possible. At the other hand I have been blaming myself in the first weeks after it happened, because I basically didn't do anaything to safe this persons life, but talking to other persons made me realise there was little I could do to prevent it from happening. I was just involved in this situation by chance and knowing this really helped me overcoming my little trauma.
I hope speaking about it with you Pete may helps Chai dealing with this little trauma. Even though it is 8 years ago now in my case, I do still remember this day very well and this story of Chai made me think of it again.
One thing I know from my own experience for sure and that is that this is something you really don't want to get involved with in any way, especially in a foreign country when there is possibly also drugs involved.

I met a couple of older guys in Chiang Mai who were opium den fiends. One a vet who’d gone awol - interesting guy he was a supposedly senators son who enlisted for Vietnam and then just dropped out. He told me he was now getting a vet pension because Obama had decided all vets deserved it … he was using that to pay to get high. His mate was a author but now a ghost writer making some good coin if he was able to motivate himself in the morning to write a few words. The older guy I remember told me he had a daughter who would visit him yearly and he would do a dry out and a cycle of roofs so that he looked good for her. What a life people lead.

He’s still dealing with the trauma. We don’t travel to be traumatized but to be amazed. I can’t help thinking that he might still be thinking, ‘That could’ve been me.’ And, ‘How devastating for my family to get that call about my passing.’ Travel is also…but it’s heightened because of the adventure, novelty, and the calculated risks we take. As motorcyclist, this story reminded me of some close calls…all self-induced by a moment of overconfidence or from being exhausted and riding (those two don’t mix well). Thank you Pete and Chai. Stay safe!!

I was curious why Chai had darker features now I understand. Good guy good heart he means well. Sorry, he had to deal with this he was smart making the correct decisions asking his friend to stay behind, and trying to help. The Full Moon Party also attracts a lot of these types and nothing but trouble after all these years they refuse to shut it down even after all the deaths. Yet the idiot foreigners can care less about the dangers and still knowingly go there. Places like that scare the hell out of me that entire island chain just makes my skin crawl. I have witnessed a few deaths myself also younger from just being careless. Likely was never been reported by the news either. Southeast Asia is a beautiful mysterious place and it has no issues chewing you up and spitting you out ruining your life, and or killing you very easily. Just a warning to others who believe this is paradise on Earth it ain,t. Don,t come here with your head in the clouds or in a darker place up your XXXXXX.

I am not a doctor but the black vomit may be blood. The victim ingested some kind of poison or he may have had some underlying condition that got triggered by something.
When in Thailand I have heard of tourists dieing in their rooms after the room has been sprayed with insecticide, mainly for bedbugs but the symptoms were different. Fortunately the victim had a traveling partner who dealt with everything. If someone traveled solo, I can't imagine of how the situation would be dealt with otherwise...maybe through the Embassy.

Living in or traveling in a foreign country ( especially where the “rules” are different) sometimes means you have to adjust your “value system “. A couple times in Thailand I have seen men ( Thai & one time a farang) arguing with his “date” and start hitting her. My instinct is to jump in and protect the lady but I never know if the guy has a knife or a group of buddies for reinforcement. Definitely a disturbing situation.

Totally agree about adjusting your values in another country. I was witness to a Khmer guy beating his partner near a cafe and luckily held back by an expat before I stepped in to help. The assailant pulled a knife but she had just got away, the locals just turned their backs or walked away, never forgot that. Take care and congrats on 100k Pete and cheers to you Chai, enjoy your work.

The guy I saw slapping the heck out a tiny girl in front of spicy club more than 10 years ago had an entourage.

If it was drugs then most likely heroin - either a bad batch or simple overdose. The main drug in Vientiane/Laos is Yaba but I think it's more popular with locals rather than westerners. Also it rarely leads to deaths.
