If this guys grandmother was Thai that means one of his parents can claim Thai citizenship which enables him to claim Thai citizenship. As for building a house upcountry, his wife can get a mortgage.

This was easily the best interview that you’ve published in recent months. Josh’s take on Thai society and relationships was intelligent and thoughtful. I believe that men think too much with their hearts and emotions, and many of them arrive in Thailand genuinely looking for the love of their life. Despite the warnings, and numerous examples of catastrophic relationships, the same mistakes are made over and over again. Twenty years from now the same stories will be being told. Although Josh can engage in legal manoeuvring to protect his interest in a property in Chiang Mai the reality is that he would not be comfortable growing old in a property that the landowner wants him out of. His life could easily be made hell. And in any case who would want to live in an area where the air pollution is toxic for almost half the year? Josh is intelligent enough to know what he needs to do … and that is not invest in a property that he can never, in reality, own. If that means the end of his marriage, that may well be a price worth paying. Any guy who goes to Thailand needs to place their heart in a safe at home, and engage only with their head.

Exactly. Thailand is for fun, there's no other reason to be there other than that. But I'm the kind of person that has a personality that just doesn't go well with the whole of Asian culture in General. So you won't find me there permanently. Was in Thailand for a month at the beginning of the year. I did not want to travel with my new phone so took a old 3 year old Samsung galaxy and put a tourist Thai sim in and was more than enough for taking the odd photo and using Bolt ect. Funny thing was lots of girls I met were judging me by my phone, telling me that I should go to the Mail and buy a new phone saying your phone old and is no good! This phone worked perfectly had a 4K camera and was only going to be used for the month. I could not be bothered trying to explain that it was an old phone that was just for the holiday and found it amusing how much judgment I was receiving because of a bloody phone! It also very hard to explain principles in Thailand so for example I was in the Mail in Bangkok and was running low on nice aftershave I did not realise how much more expensive Dior smells were in Thailand so for a bottle I usually pay £75 was £130 so I was like no I’m not paying that! The girl I was with seemed embarrassed that I said no she said you have no money now, no I have plenty of money but it’s the principle, she did not understand! She kept asking but if you wanted the scent why you say no! My friend was flying into town at the weekend so I WhatsApp him and ask him to grab me the scent at duty free, he grabs it in a sale for £60 so more than half price the cost in Bangkok! The girl explained to me I lost face when I refused to pay the inflated Thai price in the Mail, I explained to her that if I don’t like the price I won’t pay and who did I lose face too exactly the girl selling perfume in a mall I have never met or will never see again of her!! Either way I could not care less.

I've watched many interviews over the last year, this is near the top. He has knowledge, speaks the language, can get into the minute nuances, us foreigners can't. In doing so, he thoroughly peeled the onion on my last marriage. I tolerated 10 years, divorced while being bombarded daily with promises of change. It took three more years to stop hitting my head on the wall. Afterwards, I did the circuit of women and have found one that's very good. Both her parents are deceased, and two adult sons understand, "No." We help when we think we should, not when they want. Her family doesn't like it; however, friends abroad have educated her on the pitfalls of the "family." Thankfully, she listens and is very reasonable.

He has been married a few times, which tells me he can't be alone and maybe jumps into the first woman that shows him some kind of affection. All thai women are not like he describes, like in any country, u have to kiss a lot of frogs before u find a princess.

Nice one Pete. One question I would have asked at the end would have been "you've clearly had difficulties in your relationships in the past and you're clearly an intelligent guy.. so, what mistakes do you think YOU might have made (if any) along the way? Regardless of the cultural issues you describe and your observations about other people's behaviour.. do you ever reflect on anything you would have done differently that might have created a different outcome?" Not to judge this guy at all.. but I thought it was interesting that there was no self reflection or admission of fault in any way when referring to his past. He seemed to be framing his misfortune through a lens of cultural analysis. He might be right, of course. However, many people who have experienced things like this will tell you their story but they will often say things like "Look, I wasn't perfect.." or "It's not easy to be a perfect Dad.." or "I was really gullible on that one, Pete..".. etc. Interestingly, this guy's angle was very analytical about everyone else but not himself. The 'what would you have done differently' question is always a good one in interviews.. it makes them reflect on themselves and their own behaviour within the drama and the response can be quite revealing.

You make a good point. It seem like the failure of his last relationship and the possible failure of his current relationship, all comes down to how the culture makes the women behave,in his view. I my experience Thai women respond well to you if you set clear rules for what you expect early in the relationship.I also noticed that he said he puts his wife first."she is first in my mind and my heart"..A man who pedestalize his woman don't understand that women, deep down in her female nature, view this as weakness,subconsciously..Your woman should be a good healthy supplement to your life but never the main focus...I said to my Thai gf that I will never buy a house with her in Thailand, I will never marry her unless she can give me children and that I have no money for emergencies...I was also very clear about how much money I would contribute to the relationship every month...If he is married and spends a lot of money building this house, he probably will loose everything if the marriage fails down the line...She kinda has him by the balls if he agrees to building....At this point before opening my wallet I would give her a clear NO to building this house just to se how she reacts..

One of the best interviews I've seen. Cheers. Some nice insights and awareness. Thai's are very practical (which is both positive and negative). The lack of empathy can seem to be almost sociopathic to westerners. The inability of some women to express deep emotions such as loss is alarming and can be very troubling to westerners. We can be perplexed by it. It is worth noting I know of several Thai's who remain married but never seen each other. There have also been several news stories of Thai men with multiple wives (I guess they can provide?). You either learn the game and play it better or you get buried by it. Personally, I've been married to a well-educated Thai lady but I am soon to divorce. Age difference, I don't want children and boredom were the main reasons for the failure.
And yes, lease the land, get it all drawn up by lawyers in Bangkok (ones your wife is not aware of) and see if she goes for it. If she doesn't, then you will know instantly she is trying for the scam. 30 years plus 30 years is normal. They are looking at extending the land leases to 99 years right now.

I think it can be said that when you put it fairly, whether men or women, if you are coming from a poor background in Asia, there is always the pressure of having made it life, and for many asians, owning a house is one of the checklist and its very logical in asia that if your siblings or cousins have a nice house, you don't want to be left behind either. But also the house is their assurance that if everything fails they still have a roof over their heads. I believe you already appreciate very well the asian mindset about this. Another thing that is ingrained in many asians is filial piety. As such its not uncommon for asian children to want to provide for their parents. Many provide monlthy allowances to support their parents. And I think its very common to choose family first. I know I would too and it would be a very diffocult choice that should be appreciated and understood by both sides. I don't think this is unique to Thai. But yes I do agree for Thai culture they dont like to be direct and often "expect" that you will know what is expected of a provider. But again not necessarily unique to Thailand only

The safest way to protect yourself....rent your transportation, rent your dwelling, rent your girl. If any of the three give you problems....just rent something else....and keep your wealth in your home country.

I've been living in Thailand for 5 years. In general, Thais are friendly and good people, but as the guest said, it seems as if it is all about money here.

He should write a book. He's right.
Anything outside of Thailand doesn't matter. So many Thais I have met haven't even tried food that isn't Thai.
Parents dominate. Let's not complain about Thais being poor when they live for the past instead of investing for the future. I knew someone who skipped her rent in order to fix her dad's truck. (no, he didn't need it for work)
Face value. 100%. I'm sure I'll get used to it but learning about Thai culture deeper than what's on the surface ruined the surface.
    Harmony over honesty.
S work. People who don't know Thailand think all these women were "forced" into this work due to poverty. There are so many countries in poverty that don't have near the rate. Not to mention in most countries parents aren't cool with their daughters sleeping with strange men so they can have nicer things. The money some of these women make is way more than the family needs. If 4 sponsors "boyfriends" send her 1k a month what happens to the money?

It's not hard to spot red flags, most men just dont act on what they see and hear and more often than not have only themselves to blame. I dont think This is Thai specific
Pete its against the norms to talk about money but yet everybody is still trying to keep up with the Jones in Ireland

Wow, this guy seems good-hearted but hopelessly naive and probably very lonely to fall in love so easily and so quickly, this might have clouded his judgement.

Boy that is the truth, you have to listen to those internal voices. They have a beautiful hi voltage smile but they have razor sharp teeth behind the smile.

I suspect, when dealing with people who are willing to go the extra mile to harm someone, take from them, etc, we are dealing with narcissists, sociopaths, and psychopaths.
