    I have some old Argos intercom speakers with transformers attached to the speakers like the one you show. I build my own low power amps for mandolin and acoustic guitars. I have hooked up my amps outputs directly to the speakers. I have been unable to use transformer. Is this because I need an amplifier with the proper 70/100 volt outputs? Any way to take advantage of the output transformer? I typically have a 12v power supply feeding a LM386 or LM380. 1 to 3 watts output. Standard mono output.

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In practice the actual voltage at the 100 volt speaker terminals will be between 10 and 25 volts. This is not lethal. Though I wouldn't put my tongue on the terminals.
      Because it is rated at 100 volts peak, manufacturers are required to place a cover over the terminals because it is over 50 volts.

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jay Blue That's a good question for another video. It depends on how many speakers you want to connect on the one line. To use the 8ohm output on an amplifier you must use a series/ parallel method. How many were you thinking of??

    how would you wire a SNOM device on the back of the bogen AMP?

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +davibosaya Any telephone devices with an audio output like a headset connection can be connected to the AUX input of these amplifiers. The feed from the amp to the SNOM can be connected to the REC OUT connection. It is important to install a line isolation unit in line with these connections to isolate the two systems. Hope that gives you a start.

    • @GaryDmedia

      The difference is only the voltage. You can connect a 100v speaker on a 70v amplifier but it will not be as loud. You can also connect a 70v speaker to 100v amplifier but the speaker will be louder and drawer more power from the amplifier.

I didn't feel any jolt or anything nor did it indicate anything on the my Volt meter. I haven't hooked up my 100v speakers to anything yet, but shouldn't that 100v be live all the time? Or does it need a speaker hooked up to it?

    how can i hook up a 70v speaker to a professional type amp example (qsc RMX1450 amp)

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nithaphong Sourinthone The QSC RMX series amplifiers are not designed to connect to a 70 volt speaker system. They don't have an output transformer built in match the speaker system you are referring to. You can externally fit a matching transformer but they are expensive. Note: You can connect the 70 volt speaker system to the speaker output on the amplifier and it won't damage anything but there is a problem. Because a 70 volt speaker system has a much higher impedance or resistance than 8 ohms you will not be able to take advantage of the amplifier's full power. It will drive it but be very quiet. Hope that helps.

    How to connect the ampilifier to the mixer

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Melad, depending on the amplifier input and the mixer output there are many options. Most mixers have a balanced 3 pin connector. A standard microphone lead will plug into this and the most amplifiers have the same connection for input. If yours is different you may be able to access the information in the user guide.

      soykamot what you will need is a Hi/Lo converter to drop the output so you can connect it to your second amplifier. I have included these links that may be of some help. www.parts-express.com/atlas-sound-tsd-txhl-high---low-level-converter--242-9488#lblSimilarProduct

      My preference is the Australian Monitor because it has XLR connector for easy connection and an adjustable level control. Hope that is of some help. If you need a cheaper alternative you could use a speaker transformer in reverse and an 8 ohm to RCA converter like you would use for a subwoofer in a car.

      soykamot yes this unit would be ok but you will still need to use a speaker transformer to convert from 70 volt line voltage to an 8 ohm level. Simply use a speaker transformer and choose one of the lowest outputs, maybe 5 watts. I will try to upload a video sometime that shows how to do it.

    is it possible to buy a 70 or 100v out put transformer and connect it to an hi fi amplifier to allow it to drive 70 or 100v speakers?

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can even use a speaker transformer in reverse. The limiting factor is, transformers are rated in wattage. If you use a 15 watt capacity transformer you can only connect up to 15 watts.

  • @GaryDmedia
    @GaryDmedia  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Connecting a 70/ 100 volt #speaker to a public address #amplifier can be a real problem if you don't know which terminals to use. This is a short instruction video shows you where to make the connection. #Constant-voltage speakers need to be carefully wired so you don't overload the amplifier.

    I have one full operational 1959's Philips tube amplifier type EL 6425 but there is no available information about the polarity of the line output transformer (70/100 volts). The original output connector was lost long time ago and the internal cables don't give me a clue about that. Neither the transformer or the internal output impedance selector. I can't find a clear back image of one original amplifier and check it. How can i recognize the polarity of the output transformer, without using special tools? I believe firmly in correct phasing of loudspeakers but in this case it's hard to know exactly what i'm doing. Is it my imagination or i saw somewhere written on the web that says that this type of transformer doesn't require to pay attention to that detail? Thanks in advance. Macedo Pinto, Portugal.

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, great to hear the old amp is till functioning. I will make a video soon on phasing speakers because this alone is the important thing. Some old amps didn't have any indication of polarity on the output because it is an AC voltage not a DC. Just put your own mark on one of them and make sure all the speakers are wired according to that. This video may help. th-cam.com/video/5c8xuwt6nMM/w-d-xo.html

    are those plastic terminal covers necessary for 70 volt installs I have an amp without those so do you need them

    • @GaryDmedia
      @GaryDmedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is good work practice to cover the terminals just in case someone reaches over the back of the amp while its being used. In reality the voltage during normal use would rarely be above 20 volts AC even though it is a 70volt or 100volt system. Amplifier manufacturers do supply the covers to be used. It is good practice to use them if you have them.

    How to make 100volt amplifiers

    • @GaryDmedia

      70 volt or 100 volt output amplifiers are simply a standard amplifier with an output transformer. You can make a 100 volt output amplifier by connecting a speaker transformer to the 8 ohm output. You must remember that the output of the amp must not be greater than the rating on the transformer.
