    I built this kit back in 2016. I did mine with gear doors closed, and the blue underside. Had just a little trouble getting the cockpit tub fitted. 60 year old eyes and XXL fingers make dealing with tiny parts difficult. I just ommitted most of those wee stencils. Makes a decent model. Far better than the ancient Testors/Hawk version of the Swift.

    Looks like a pretty nice kit. I remember back in the 60's almost all aircraft kits came with a stand to display it "in flight", so to speak. You hardly ever see that anymore. I'm guessing Airfix is thinking most would want a ground display. I think it would make a nice addition to anyone's Cold War collection.

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Apparently it was a cost saving exercise. You can still get them separately from Airfix, in a pack of about 10, but only people who want them buy those. Not all the stands in every kit would end up being used

    The Swift first appeared as a kit as long ago as 1960 when Hawk produced it,following that a limited productiom kit was made by Pegasus which built into a nice model to,,the Swift first flew in 1953 and held the speed record for jet aircraft flown by Mike Lithgo Supermarines test pilot,this would make a very interesting conversion painted in bright blue for the speed record.As regards pilots this has never been one of Airfix's best points they struggled to make pilots years ago that looked like starved aviators !

    I used to have a copy of one of those but it went with a big purge of 100 kits a few years back. I'm sorry to hear that the Hornby shop closed in Swindon. Is "Spot On" still trading? If not Swindon would be without a model shop now (not counting Hobbycraft - if that is open).

      Hobbycraft is still there (but only doing online due to lockdowns) and i'm pretty sure Spot-on still exists, but it's been many years since I was in the town centre. There used to be another model shop which focused on RC more than kits, but that has long gone

    The lack of a pilot figure in the kit seems stranger when it looks like the two seat options are one with straps and one without as if there was a pilot in the seat, also were those sink marks towards the rear of the upper wing surfaces?

    • @allandavis8201
      @allandavis8201 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s possible that the seat without straps is meant to represent a seat prepared for a solo flight, it was common practice to cover all the straps with a ‘solo seat cover’ that attached to the seat with straps and buckles, obviously that’s just from my experience in the RAF, but that was long after the swift was taken out of service. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

      I'm surprised that, with all the skill in white metal to be found in England, no one makes 1/72 and 1/48 pilots with separate arms and head for dynamic poses. Such a plane driver might also serve as a nose weight in a number of tripod-gear planes. Opportunity awaits, British crafts people!

    • @mrjockt
      @mrjockt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@carmium, it’s possibly because there are already plastic pilot figures available from Japanese manufacturers already on the market, it would be great to see a British manufacturer break into the market but taking on established companies would be difficult and, probably, expensive.

    Looking at this Matt I must admit I'd love to have a go at this kit.. I have their EE Lightning F6 fleet releases in my collection but it'd be nice to own something different. Granted the pilot figure not being present can be a problem if a flying diorama is considered but I can overlook this issue as I build my aircraft on the ground anyway.. However given the amount of pilot figures I have in my spares box I could actually find a home for one in this kit.
    Brilliant review as always Matt and I hope you get round to building her in the future!

      @@ModelMinutes Anytime mate, I'm a huge fan of 50's RAF jets and this one ticks the boxes for myself, the only thing for me in obtaining this model is it's price... on eBay its a kit that goes for £25 minimum... plus postage, so you're looking around £29 for the kit.. so that's the only thing that puts me off as it's not worth that amount...? Besides that to compare kits I'm surprised they haven't released a re-tooled Hunter in 1/72... unless they're planning to release the old kit in their Vintage Classics range?
      Granted there is the 1/48 kit but when it comes to space restrictions on the shelf 1/72 is always the way to go!
      Regardless of the price? I would actually get one as I'm a die hard fan of modern Airfix stuff and classic RAF aircraft. ☺️

    One way of 'cheating' if you want to have a kit with no pilot figure displayed in flight, is to paint the inside of the canopy with a translucent smoke colour so that the inside of the cockpit isn't really visible from anything other than close-up.

    Excellent review! Very nicely done.
    It is rather odd that the kit allows you to build the landing up (and gives you the closed doors too) yet does not include a pilot and stand. Zvezda sells aircraft stands separately, so you can get one that way. Sure, that won't stop you from building it "in-flight" but it is a bit annoying. But as a kit, it definitely looks like a very good one with nice detail. I think even the full retail price is still a good bargain for what you get, as are all the newer (new mold) Airfix kits.

    The Supermarine Swift roots can be traced back to the Mk xiv Spitfire. The Mk xiv provided the fuselage for the prototype Spiteful, which in turn the Supermarine Attacker used the wings of the Spiteful. The Attacker was then further developed, replacing the wings and tail with swept wings etc and also given a tricycle undercarriage. Neither the Attacker or Swift were particularly successful. The Attacker was withdrawn from front line service after only 6 years and the Swift after about 12, the roles that the Swift was intended for then being taken over by the Hawker Hunter. The Supermarine Swift was a bit of an embarrassment and almost destroyed the reputation of the British aircraft industry. Supermarine peaked with the Spitfire and went downhill from there.

    Well... The pilot figures are usually a nice adition, but let's be honest, the ones you get with other Airfix kits are pretty bad. Their pose always makes me chuckle as they just sit there not even reaching out for the control stick, casually their arms resting on their legs.

      @@ModelMinutes Airfix should look at what Das Werk is doing and copy their approach with its new models. I thinks there's likely to be a large market for UK subjects in these scales as they are so rarely modelled.
      For me, its far to focussed on 1/72 scale (and 1/600 scale ) and virtually invisible in all the main scales that are popular today (1/35, 1/48 and 1/350).
      I like that they do try to get kids into modelling, but all the serious money is in the adult market and this requires fine details and good model design.
      In addition, it is way way to focussed on WW2 era models. Thats was fine for the 60s and 70s, but doesn't work quite so well in the 2020s.
