  • 1. You need to take some business classes. 2. Need to understand the demographics of the area; do your research of what kind of clients you would have to be able to cater to that community. 3. Find a location to rent or own. 4. Facilitate a team; patient and dedicated cosmetologists, estheticians, barbers, massage therapists, and manicurists. 4. Offer special services and education that will set you apart from your competition in the area. 5. Choose your marketing tools; product line(s) that will be affordable to your clients and will attract them to your salon/spa. 6. Advertise your salon through social medial market and use online booking platforms to promote your business. 7. Customer retention; groupon or not to groupon? Listen to your guests to discover why are they in your salon, what do they want, what are their concerns for their hair and skin... Client consultation is a key to customer service. 8. Keep your employees motivated and inspired by establishing a career path for your team by offering training and education, setting measurement and markers to keep the team members achieve their goals and rise up the ladder. Offer creative events like photo shoot nights. Watch the free video to receive advice of how to go to the job interview; steps and what is necessary to know to get hired to work in the salon; dress the part, be confident, keep eye contact, have a simple and clean resume, learn the different STYLES OF HANDSHAKE for an interview; full grip handshake, congressman handshake, the presidential handshake. Do not do the limp fish handshake; it shows uncertainty. Learn how to recruit your styling team. Learn about the financial aspect of business. Get free advice for first starting out hairdressers and beauty school students. Learn about partner or not to partner; that is the question! Learn about working in foreign countries; do you need a license? This video is an educational how to open a business advice video for cosmetologists, salon and spa professionals, beauty school students, hairdressers, and entrepreneurs, people who want to open a beauty business. The guest speaker is the Artistic Director for ERGO and OC Network Productions Chad Clark . Video is produced by BeautyHealthTravel Channel.

I am a Celeb Stylist and I have to say I happened on this video and thoroughly enjoyed this gentlemans presentation and thorough information. Gave me another spark so to speak. What is his name and what
Salon is he representing? I would like to take a look and see if it's for me. I appreciate your response in advance and Thank You for Sharing this. Pierre Sutton

Chad Clark, he opened up a salon in Visalia Ca, but I believe he retired already. He’s been MIA on social media for several years now. Sorry to answer this 4 years later. Lol.

My brother had a business with 2 partners, it all fell apart because one of them. He also recommends to have a sole proprietorship, it is a little hard to put the money in, but it is worth it.

I loved your advice in the last 5 minutes of your lecture😍 in my salon we were about 6 stylists, AVEDA concept. And I could say that I was the only stylist providing the personal AvedA experience and going above and beyond their expectations. My prices where the highest among all of us. Never discounted / bargains either. Firm with it and if that guest didn’t see my value then that one wasn’t for my chair . I let them go and I always says ..there will be another guest string in my chair and who will apreciare my time/ services: and enjoy the personal experience I’ve offered. I offer all services too except for one . I keep up with education /go to hair show and participated with fashion shows doing models hair. I believe I have value consistency and dedication with so much passion too. Also I’m a good sales person and great communicator bc really believe in my abilities and the products I’m representing - educate myself first then onto my clients . This has been my experience though . 😘

wow this is such an amazing video! I feel like I found a diamond in the rough kinda video on youtube lol. I thoroughly enjoyed it and very informational. I am dual licensed in the beauty industry in NY and becoming cidesco certified. I plan on working on a international level soon but I am always thinking ahead! I would like to open a business in the future and this defiantly help me put some things in perspective. Thank you so much for sharing this, I am totally saving this video and rewatching!

The handshake: Its ego... Lol. The elbow hold: It's intimidation...
I completely agree about giving Services away as opposed to giving percentages and money off or coupons because it cheapens the services but when you give them away it exposes clients to the joys of those services and they might continue to add those services.
    We ain't Wal-Mart! Hahaha ;)

This video was so helpful..and it gave me lots of insight. I just got into a partnership with someone I worked for, and now really regret it. But I am like Chad, I'll only stay for a little awhile and then get out of it. I highly recommend, if anyone wants to open a business, do it solo that way no one is telling you what to do or how to do your ideas.

Very educational. To start your own salon you need to research and get some insight from a long running beauty salon owner. Take into account also the advices, ideas and tips coming from people since they will be your future market.
