Sam takes us through another session of SalonSense in this clip with Andrew Carruthers, Education Director for Sam Villa.
Sam interviews Andrew on hiring, training and booking new stylists for the salon and why the processes work:
    • Why hiring fresh out of school makes the salon stronger
    • How a 6-10 month development training program is the true test
    • How sharing the education experience with clients builds the stylist
    • Why we must create a "point of difference"
    • Why the "bedside manner" is so important
Sam teaches us that communication builds wealth and that people buy people, and then they buy things!
We have a lot to learn here on setting our salons up for success!

I love that there is so much training. This philosophy reminds me of Vidal Sassoon's theory; however I feel it is a bit discriminating that he is not inclusive with non-newbies. He feels that experienced stylists are not flexible, but he is being not flexible. Hmmm. They should look at the individual person and that person's philosophy and not try to make little robots.

question: what is a your solution to compensation during the "associate program" are the hourly? are they getting tips from other stylists or clients? I'd like to know how to implement a similar program that is fair to both parties.

Do you have any advice or videos on hiring.. How to hire the right people. Or how to avoid hiring people who don't deliver what they promise at interview time?

What if I own my salon but don't have time to educate my new hires cause I'm so busy

    • @samvillahair
      @samvillahair  3 ปีที่แล้ว

That's a really common challenge for owners! It's tough because at some point, we have to make a decision if our priority is our own clientele or if it is the development of the staff. Maybe delegating some of the education responsibilities to someone on the team that you trust would help too.

Sadly everyone under me is a junior stylist 😪 and can't train. I'm the only one thats a Master Colorist/Stylist and licensed cosmo instructor. Guess I gotta find the time one day. And I can't hire any master stylist cause they wanna work for themselves and not for me

I find this insulting. Older more experienced stylists may have even more heart and are at a level where they can absorb so much more because of the level they are at technically.

u might have a point there but there are thousands of people going to cosmetology school every year! what's wrong with giving them a chance to shine? i am a new stylist. i educated from the school a year ago but no one is willing to give me a job at their salon because they say i lack experience! it's not fair!!!!!! I love their point of view because the new stylists need job! the old ones too but this system is better. the old ones already got a job if they are lucky enough but the new ones need a point to start and get experience and have fun so i think they are having a point there.

Am I the only one that thinks its nuts to have to go through another complete year of schooling before you're "considered" a stylist?!? That's all fun and cut and all while you guys are comfortable eating and sleeping at night and paying your bills but I am not ok being kept at the bottom of the food chain eating cereal for another year. I understand relearning processes to put the salons signature style on things and you have the best interest of a new stylist in mind but no way Jose.

beauty school really only teaches you to get your license. it is a HUGE value to work with a seasoned experienced stylist. trust me IN THE BIG PICTURE, it WILL be worth your time. xox

NO!!!!! do they offer that? YESSSSS!!!!!
I would give anything to have the chance they are offering but living in the country i live, it's impossible!
