      I have a 13 year old 30" Troy-Bilt that I've used heavily every winter. The joystick is still working great as are all the various cables on the machine. I clear a 150-foot gravel driveway along with two parking areas for about 24 cars. It easily handles two feet of snow. I also have a 6 year old Troy-Bilt that is identical in every way except for the width at 28". The build quality is much worse. The chute controls feel like they will snap at any time and it's difficult to swing the chute all the way in either direction. I was really disappointed in how crappy it is compared to my first one. My advice to anyone shopping around is to try the controls a lot and get a feel for the quality before buying.

    Two years later, there are some fine points to understand. That 60’s Ariens ( ours from ‘65 still works) has a worm gear driving the chute. The chute stays where you put it. Many of today’s chutes can be moved by the force of the snow.
    Know the fine points of where you live. Snow is not bad where I am but I am on a busy street. So big plows dump lots of heavy snow across my driveway. That demands more power. Not a bigger machine necessarily but a bigger engine.
    Forget junk machines and big box stores. Get a pro quality machine and it will work for 20-30 years.
    Finally, ALWAYS add Stabil to your gas can before refilling it!

      i have an ariens 6/28 from the early 80's and it's still hanging in there. it's mostly made of metal, only a plastic gas tank. i've done a few repairs like wheel bushings and replaced the carb. the only weak part of it is the dinky bearing on the impeller shaft which i've had to change twice and it's kinda overdue, knock on wood. i live in massachusetts and we don't get as much snow as we used to.

    I have Deluxe 28 which I bought 8 years back. I haven't done anything on it, even the engine oil was changed after 5 years and this thing is still running like a beauty.
    Starts every time with 1 pull only although it has electric start also I prefer to pull the cord to start it.
    Really nice piece of machinery.

    Great info on the auger! Great videos.I finally got my Ariens deluxe 28 that I wanted 20 years ago but the dealer didn't have any left at the time so I settled for a Simplicity. The Simplicity is a great machine but it's no Arians to be sure.the only thing about the Ariens I don't like is you can't push your hip into the back end of the control panel to force it thru the really heavy stuff like at the end of the driveway ( it's a sharper edge) where the Simplicity had sheet metal boxing everything in. Other than that small pet peeve I agree Ariens snowblowers all the way!

    One more thing to consider: Terrain.
    My driveway splits in a Y, one going to the attached garage and the other to a detached garage.
    I don't get a ton of snow, but I do have a 5 foot retaining wall on the one side of the drive and I need to throw the snow over it.
    Also, I want to throw snow over the other drive, not onto it.
    So, consider how far you need to throw the snow as well as how much snowfall you get.

      Hey Suprand! I know 3 people plus me that all have the ariens deluxe 28. All agree the simple crank works great. Never fails. I live in Columbus, OH area & have a small driveway (1.5 cars) & can do my driveway & walkway twice before having to recharge the battery. The snowblower is lightweight & easy to used. The only negative thing that I can say about it is if your driveway is bumpy or has uneven strips between the driveway & sidewalk then it tends to gets hung up on these spots & you need be careful going over these areas. It seems to have good power though.

      Makes sense - we had a bunch of gas powered tool in our shop: mower, leaf blower, trimmer, generator, snowblower, edger tool - and a shelf filled with oil, lubricants and gasoline and gas/oil mix.
      The smell got to me and kept my wife away from entering.
      This year - a transition: went with the EGO self propelled lawnmower - does our 25,000 square foot lawn comfortably. Then a leaf blower - awesome for clearing snow from car and leafs from our yard.
      Chucked the generator -
      And, the EGO snowblower is amazing - more power than the old 2-stage gas unit and less hassle. AND - we now have our workshop smelling fresh and clean.
      BTW - this is in Quebec where annual snowfall is quite massive.

    So true that simple design is best. Bought me a Yamaha snow blower thinking it was going to be bullet proof and trouble free for years to come and boy was I wrong. While I feel the engine and transmission would of probably held up well all of the other fancy stuff like the shoot control switch , the leveling shock , transmission cable ect would easily freeze up or fail failed right from the first winter I had it. and if the shoot switch fails for example you can't move it manually , its stuck where it broke until you replace the switch and parts are expensive and can be hard to get, everything on back order .theres a lot more to a snow blower than a good engine and transmission, keep it simple people you will be glad you did !

    I live in Buffalo as well... and have an older Troy-Bilt 2620 with the plastic chute system (as well as the multi-directional control)... no issues after 9 years. I have a standard 2 car wide driveway about 50' long, but live on a corner lot... probably 300+' of sidewalks. Maintaining your equipment is the most important thing you can do to make them last. Next to that is treating them with care. Far too often I see people try to zip through the plowed pile at the end of the driveway... you know, that stuff setup like concrete and 3-4' deep... with the blower in high forward gear. Set it to the lowest forward speed and take your time. :)

I bought a Simplicity M1024E 2 stage snowblower back in 2018 and was never told that the machine was built in China. I thought it was an American made machine. Take some advice from me and don’t take anything for granted just because of a brand name like I did. I had several problems with my snowblower.

      Simplicity Signature is hands down the best machine on the market. Don't care what you compare it to. The Simplicity line is much better built than most other brands.
      As far as made in china, the upper end Simplicity gets the US made Briggs engines. Husquvarna and Ariens both use LCT, a Chinese engine. Mostof these machines are made in china, regardless of name stamped on them.

    Go with a bigger machine, yes, generally. But the last Ariens I bought was a 30" and it was almost too much for me to handle. Remember when you turn, the side of the auger housing has to push some snow aside. That, combined with the extra weight of the machine caused me problems. I had to back up, lift the wheels off the ground and pivot to make cuts at an angle until I had opened up a large enough area to turn in.
    I did the 30" because I had a quarter-mile-long driveway; literally 1,320 feet long. So it worked out because I could go straight out to the road, turn around and come straight back. But the work near my house was a bummer for me.
    I have been an Ariens man for 50+ years. Back in the day, my father was an Ariens dealer and I worked on them. Everything else was inferior. If I had to buy a snow blower today, from what I can see and read, it would be another Ariens. Probably a 24" since I'm 75 now.

    Great video, JB. I have a 1996 MTD 8 hp two stage machine. Going to put some new belts on it and see if performance improves. Your Ariens looks real nice. There is a local retailer near me who sells Ariens and services them. Some folks in my neighborhood have made switch to battery snowblowers. Guy down the street has the EGO but he needs two sets of batteries to get through one driveway clearing job. The cost of extra batteries is pretty high. The shelf life is pretty short. Three years. When battery models fail, seems like no one fixes them, they just make a warranty claim and get a new one. Seems like if you take care of an Ariens you are looking at decades of service. My MTD has served me well since 1996. It's not as nice as an Ariens but it gets the job done.

    I bought a Sno-Tek @ Home Depot in 2007, it is the hardware store version of the Ariens, and it too has been a beast, Northern Ohio winters along Lake Erie shore can be rough, lots of snow, and all I have ever had to replace on it was the drive wheel last year. It lacks the amenities like lights and heated handles, but I don't even need electric start. Three primes and one slow pull on the rope and it fires right up. It's a solid machine.

      You got me beat by 1 model year! Good on ya! I too almost always use my pull start as i find it's a very good way of determining the condition of your fuel system, ignition system and compression/valve train. If it's a beast to start by the pull cord, there's definitely an issue that's only going to get worse. I'd say i use the electric starter once for every 5 pull starts. I also use only ethanol free supreme gasoline with a little shot of methyl-hydrate to ensure no water contamination ever occurs. Last year i had a buddy of mine with a decal printing business make me all new decals for my Husqvarna 10527SB and most people think its brand new whenever they see my little beast. 😁

    • @gmctech

      P.S. I also keep the pull cord saturated in silicone based lubricant and thus far my little "trick" has stayed the test of time and extended the life of the pull cord thus far. No dry rot, no frays and no breaks so i think it must be working!

    I would argue with the bigger is always better idea. My sister uses a 28" Ariens Pro Wheeled unit in the Ontario snow belt. Its a beast that moves a lot of snow however she finds it too big and heavy.
    Other considerations:
    1. Size the unit to the operator;
    2. Ease of turning - I was once clearing about 20 short driveways, my next blower had autoturn and easier chute control;
    3. Track or wheel. Tracks are harder to turn than wheeled and almost always slower. They also have much better traction can float on top of snow and have better auger height control. The Ariens RapidTrak system looks nice however I have no experience with them ... yet.

    Two years ago I bought a TroyBilt 24 inch Snowblower with mechanical shoot turn handle for $595. It has the same 12 inch wide throw impellers as the 26 inch you showed. I live in the Lake Tahoe basin and have had to remove two feet of snow every three to four hours four times in 20 hours to stay ahead of it. A 24 ft wide wood driveway bridge to my garage, I live on a hillside, means the snow sticks quickly. I ended up with a 9.5 foot snowbank on one side a 10 foot plus on the other side. I have had to remove a 3.5 ft berm the snowplow made by first digging out a cut with a shovel and then just removing half the 24 inch width at a time. My neighbors Ariens 24 inch does the same job but cost him a lot more. I recommend besides cleaning out the auger/impeller when you are done snowblowing, to put a splash of -20 degrees F windshield washer fluid in the shoot to keep the impeller from freezing with ice on the bottom. I’ve had an MTD 21 inch single stage snow blower since 1995. I change the scraper blade (or reverse it) each year, and replace the rubber auger paddles every 3-4 yrs depending on the amount of snow (Cincinnati, avg annual snowfall ~16 in). The original drive belt just broke while clearing snow from last week’s ice/snow storm (Feb 4, 2022). Usually takes 15 to 20 minutes to clear my driveway and all sidewalks, then I do about five or six of the neighbors. This time due to the amount of sleet and freezing rain that fell ahead of the snow it took me two hours just to do our driveway and the single sidewalk up to the front door. Sorry neighbors! Literally went over the driveway 20 or so times, but the rubber paddles were stiff enough that they took a small layer with each pass.

    Fellow Buffalonian here! Appreciate the tips. IMHO, I think the "wider is always better" concept is misleading. I just returned a new 828 Toro HD that was 30 inches wide, 100 pounds HEAVIER than a 24" machine, to revert back to 24". When I"m out there clearing I don't mind a pass or two more -- what I do mind is wrestling a beast of a machine around. Based on your auger to width ratios, a 24" wide machine make more sense on a 12" chute size than a 12" chute with, say, a 28" wide machine! I never thought of it .. great point! And to your point of simple, the 828 Toro HD had triggerless steering and it was effortless to steer it back and forth -- which was a big problem as the machine always wanted to keep turning right into the deeper snow when "trimming back" a sidewalk, for example. I like two wheels locked and going straight ahead. Nice video!

    Forget new. I bought a 1974 Ariens 24 inch with a 6hp Tecumseh engine. You can get those between $50 and $250. Electric start. Kills it. Was going through 2 feet of snow in 4th gear spitting it out the chute like beer vomit. Also got a Bolens 624 probably 30 years old same engine for $37 on Maxsold that does pretty good but not the beast the Ariens is and not as maneuverable so might sell that one. Even if you get an older one that doesn't run right the carburetors are only around $15 and that'll fix it 90% of the time. I used to use the little single stage blowers at the hardware store I used to work at as a kid. SnowChief a True Value brand. They did OK but never tried it in deep snow because we'd always be out there keeping the pavement clean so people didn't fall and sue which they did pretty good job of.

    While impeller size can matter.
    The speed of it also matters.
    The smaller ones may be spinning faster that the bigger one. Then it be about the same.
    Cables can rust and give trouble. Especially long ones.
    Have to say though that I love the power steering system on the cubcadet. It really is that much better. Keep it maintained and it should last a long time. Not a fan of cable's but they are a lot quicker and easier. Takes less than a second to turn the spout from one direction to the other with a cable system. If u have to do it alot. Much nicer way to go. Spend more time blowing snow and less time turning the spout. It's cold, u want to get done. Had a Cubcadet. It was nice.
    Definitely would get another one.
    Ariens are old school. But they are reliable.
    Main thing is to keep them out of the rain.

Should I go all out and get a 28 inch pro model or can I get away with something cheaper. The pro model is $4000 CAD. • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Got2btapp! Congrats on picking up that many driveways this year. That’s impressive. You’ll have to let me know what a 28” deluxe sho goes for in Canadian. I was looking at those two and only a few differences exist. You’ll get 6 more ft lbs of torque with the engine. You’ll get a 5 year warranty on the gear case vs 1. You’ll get a 1 year product warranty vs 90 days and 2 inch bigger augers. It also throws 5 feet further. If these numbers matter to you and your business then go for it but if your driveways are relatively small then you could probably get away with a deluxe sho. Either way Ariens makes a great product and will always have a great resale value down the road. Hope this helps. Let me know what you’re thinking! Thanks for watching!

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Russel! Good question. Speed is a factor and will help. You could tune your rpm’s on the engine to improve the speed. Ultimately a wider tube is best. Think of it like drinking a thick milkshake through a narrow straw. It will take more effort to get it through if you increase the speed. If you have a wider tube you can shove as much as you want through. Thanks for watching!

    • @frankenberry9670
      @frankenberry9670 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not so much. What you are really interested in is how much snow is being fed into the impeller by the augers. The impeller can only move so much snow per revolution so if the amount coming in exceeds that "bad" things happen. The two ways to control this are to change how fast the unit moves forward into the snow and how wide a swath you take. I try to take a full swath at the highest speed that doesn't cause snow to start piling up in front of the augers. If I still get snow plowing at the slowest speed I take a smaller swath. The impeller diameter does two things for a given RPM. A larger diameter can move more snow per rotation and the the speed at which the snow leaves the chute is higher.

Those steering buttons also stick a lot, the cable controlled chute swing cables often freeze or come loose. Just bought an Airens because they put the work into quality and functionality. No heated handles. direct steering, turn crank chute control and a good size engine. Another item you should mention is weight. Sometimes the machine may be too large or heavy for someone to maneuver so they may need to go one size down in the model range.

      There's different mechanisms of steering. The double steering lever types seem to have the most issues. Simplicity uses a single lever that disconnects differently. Ariens used to used a single lever that likewise disconnected in a different fashion Ariens switched to a more complex mechanism that works KINDA like a differential, allowing for the wheels to turn at different speeds. Very complex. I'm not a fan of that mechanism.

      @@johnfromnj885 My old Craftsman/Husqvarna had the trigger mechanisms. After a few years always started to seize up. Replaced the trigger cables a couple of tears ago and now they are acting up again. Decided on the Ariens over the Toro even though both are very good. Thanks for the info on the different steering types.

      @@garfieldsmith332 I like both Ariens and Toro. My preferance is SIMPLICITY. Just built like tanks. Then either toro (professional) or Ariens.

    That snowblower with the broken trigger would have cost more than $1199 originally because unlike the rest there at $1199 it is a track drive. Likely it was originally 1500-1600$

    Hey JB… what are your thoughts on the Ariens 24" Platinum SHO EFI
    I’m looking to pick one up, they are asking $2K Canadian negotiable. Bought 2017 model AE921053
    Thoughts?

    • @GarageGear

      Hey apex! I honestly still have mixed feelings about the efi! I’m in a handful of Facebook groups with many complaining they can’t get their engines started, batteries being dead or constantly charging. I’m planning on buying a new ariens this winter and will more than likely avoid efi after all I’ve been reading. It’s sounds like they still have a few weak points to work on!

      There’s also a Platinum 24 SHO up for grabs. I’ve asked for the model/serial number. Asking $2500 cdn… seems steep.
