I have never owned a snowblower other than an Ariens. I buy a new one every 5 years and sell my old one privately at the first major snow storm of the season when the retailers have zero stock of blowers and people pay a ridiculous premium for a used and very good machine. I usually sell my old Ariens for about 90% of what I purchased it for 5 or 6 years prior. No headaches and peace of mind using my system. Happy snowblowing 😊

Had an Ariens ST824 since the 1980’s and it was a solid machine, with very few problems. Decided to upgrade in 2016, and went with the Ariens Delixe 24, and it is awesome. I would never purchase a snowblower without shear pins, as they are the main difference between a $2 vs several hundred dollar gearbox if you hit a frozen newspaper or chunk of ice that the augers can’t destroy. The zero turn on the Ariens works great, the machine weight is unnoticeable while operating it, and I believe it helps get through the end of driveway pile without much effort on my part. I have no issue with the size of the gas tank, and only use about 1/4 to 1/3 clearing my 2 driveways, and paths that take me about an hour to do, with the machine running at full throttle the entire time.

Oh no guys. I had decided to go w the Toro but want something that would last and had minor issues. I think that I will go ahead w the Aries 24 deluxe. It might be an overkill purchase but it’s better than doing it by shovel. Thank for those videos.

    • @noniespam
      @noniespam ปีที่แล้ว

@@Elzanto When it comes to snow removal there is no such thing as overkill.. Also Ariens has the HO model which throws snow to the neighbors yard.. The secret is the high speed auger, it’s 14” diameter instead of 12”. They run at the same RPM but the tip of the 14” auger has to run at a faster FPM (feet per minute) to keep up.. which throws the snow farther.. SO WORTH IT…. Basic physics most people overlook. Of course you need the HP and Ariens has that figured out pretty good.

I’ve owned a Toro power max 10/28 since 2005. The joystick works fantastic and is bullet proof! Also trust me they don’t need sheer pins the gear box is strong.

Doesn't matter how strong the gear box is. When you run into a decent sized piece of wood or whatever, it's gonna defeat any gearbox and destroy it if it's not protected in some way. That or break the shear key on the flywheel.

    • @plmn93
      @plmn93 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@rogerzindler8144 Actually what tends to happen is the belt gets damaged, which is much more hassle than a shear pin. I think I've broken one or two shear pins over the past 20 years. Just usually not an issue for most people. It's not like Toro has a patent on that, it probably says something that none of the other manufacturers, not even Honda, do that.

    • @plmn93
      @plmn93 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yours has the plastic chute though, which was a great match for the Quick Stick. If you try it on the new machines with metal chutes I think you'll quickly realize why there are durability concerns. Toro should have beefed up or redesigned the Quick Stick for the heavier and stiffer chutes. It does not instill confidence and I have seen a few reports of it having issues and breaking in icy weather.
My 2002 Ariens 8/24 still performs like new having had nothing but regular maintenance, for what it's worth, despite being a bit small for my needs.

Thanks GG.. found your site researching snow blowers, specifically Ariens & Toro. Another vid of yours covered avg yearly snowfall which caused me to reevaluate my “needs” from a 28” to a 24”. Your head to head on Ariens v Toro is exactly the 2 that I felt comfortable with purchasing (ratings, history, value, performance). Your shear pin explanation helped my understanding of it not being a cheap weak link but rather a viable safety option. Where this will be my first snow blower, making the best decision for a long term option is important. Ariens it is!

The issue that I had with my Ariens, other than the jack wagon who previously owned it tried to hide a cracked gear box using JB weld and Paint, which I replaced the gear box and it worked great, was going through quite a few shear pins. They seem great if you have a paved or concrete driveway, but if you live way out in the country side where there are rocks, gravel and sticks, the shear pins love to piss you off and break any chance that they can get. Last year I went with a Toro because of this. I didn't get the Toro mentioned in this video though, so I couldn't tell anyone how they perform. I went with the beefier 32 inch 375cc snow blower. It was on sale, $400 off regular price, so I got it. Things a beast. I mostly plow my driveway, but I use the snow blower to trim the edges of the driveway and to do all of the paths. Works great at the end of the driveway where the plows love to pack the snow in as well as clearing the mailbox.

Thanks for the video-- I am specifically debating between these snow blowers, so your breakdown of all the features was helpful. I just read the Wirecutter snowblower reviews, and they chose the Toro Snowmaster 824 QXE for their top selection, in part because they claim it actually works faster than the other brands and has a "Personal Pace" drive system, while the Ariens Classic 24" doesn't have power steering. Were those features available on the models you're comparing in this video? If you ever find a neighbor who has the Toro, I'd be interested in a follow-up video comparing your experience of the performance of these models. Thanks again.

Questions: Where are you seeing 16 inch ideal depth for the Ariens? I looked on the Ariens site and could not verify this number. Also if the Auger components are bigger on the Ariens, should it be able to dispose of snow at a faster clip than Toro 2000lbs/minute to 2066lbs/minute. Does not seem like a large enough discrepancy (3% higher) when the components are about 27% larger. I am considering both of these, hence the questions. Live on Long Island NY.

The engine size should have been a tie. 2 cc's is a very small difference. The rest of it I'm not arguing with any of your logic, however I will point out one more thing. The lack of shear pins should also be explained with the smaller auger. I think the smaller auger allows them to do this.

Had 2 Ariens Professionals, a 926 and last a ST32DLE. The 26" I ended up totally rebuilding after about 5 years. It had a chute unlock cable that would always break. The drive wheel bushings wore out as did the auger bushings. I hit a frozen newspaper and ended up having to replace the impeller. I bought the new impeller but for the life of me I could not get the old impeller off the shaft. I took it to my local dealer who said they had never gotten one off in the many years of being an Ariens dealer. I ended up having to buy a new shaft as well. Seeing the worm gear os oart of the shaft I replaced the auger driv e gear as I didn't want the new worm gear to wear the drive gear prematurely. When woirking the3 26" machine was a bit under powered. There was an 11HP engine that was a direct bolt on replacement and I think it would have made this blower near perfect. The 32" was a bear in the snow. It just kept on going. I didn't like the "easy steer" function. It always required a firm nudge to work. The 32: was far too heavy for it' size. I ended up replacing it with a Toro 928. Much lighter, and easier to move around when running. Threw the snow just as far and used less gas. I paid about $3000 for the 32" Ariens and $1840 for the Toro. That is Canadian Dollars. I sold the Toro for what I paid a year later as I lost a leg and cannot use a walk behind blower any longer. The Ariens I sold for $2000 4 years after buying it. Over all I like the Ariens but love the Toro. FWIW, both dealers were great to deal with.

I've owned an Ariens snow blower it was a great machine it was larger than a 24" I don't remember which model, but it was a monster I blew a 220' driveway with it. I currently own a Toro commercial 1428 here at my new house I'm usually never home during snow storms so my wife handles the driveway the Toro has a few key features that make it a great machine for her to maneuver and the chute control, although complicated, is easier for her. I forgot the heated hand grips are a nice touch.

However the handle bars broke the other day and the controls ride LOW which is hard on my back. I am thinking about a replacement and the Ariens deluxe 24 would be my only choice ! Happy New Year !

One thing people don't realize Toro snow blowers use a stronger metal Ariens even though Ariens is thicker.
Yep that's right That Toro snowblower when it comes to the metal is actually stronger Even though it's thinner there was a whole thing done about it.
Toro seems to know better than any company what matters and what doesn't..
They are brilliant, with the quick stick( blows away The way Arians shoot works!! Always having to bend over a little bit is like that mechanic bend over feel I've tried it before your back gets tired over time no way know how what I want that!! )
anti-clog that really works I can tell you first hand in works every time. What it does is it throws some of the snow back into the auger like recycling Makes The snow lighter like aerates it.. therefore you get snow that's fluffier when it comes out to shoot and throws it further That's why if you look at a Toro snowblower throwing snow You can see how it's powdery and goes all over the place. That's because it's recycled.. doing this also puts less pressure on the gears, the belts and everything else in the system. Why do you think Ariens uses two belts for the auger. Because their system puts more pressure on everything..
( And not to mention that's why they can get away with using 11-in auger and impeller BECAUSE IT DOES THE JOB JUST AS GOOD AS THE ARIENS WITH THEIR BIG BULKIE STUFF!! And when they done tests on a consistent basis the Toro throws the snow further regardless of the 50 ft spec versus 45 on the Toro... Toro's just being more conservative. Ariens is just saying 50 cuz probably one time it hit 50 or something in the test.
Toro consistently throws it further because of its anti-clogging system..
Stronger metal The way it's made which makes it weigh less This has been proven as a fact study..
They even have a thing about plastic how certain plastics are stronger than metal and they know where to use it.. plastic doesn't rust And last longer Not to mention can be just as strong.
Not to mention Toro's no shear pin technology. I CAN TELL YOU THIS WORKS FANTASTIC FIRST HAND. The first time I noticed going through snow I hit a CAR RIM UNDER THE SNOW!! BAMB!! THE MACHINE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY!!
I remove the rim restarted the machine and kept going. This is not the first time That happened to me. IT WORKS AND IT WORKS FANTASTIC. I NEVER WANT TO CHANGE A SHEAR BOLT EVER AGAIN!!
I just think Toro is ingenious ( they just know what matters and what doesn't )
Not to mention they were the first company ever to Make the walk behind residential snowblower in 1951.
And to boot The expert companies tested all the snow blowers out.. TORO WON OVERALL OUT OF ALL THE OTHER ONES INCLUDING ARIENS...
The things that you're mentioning really don't matter that much.. And they really don't matter longevity either.
Both companies snow blowers will last the exact same amount of time if you take care of them.. they could actually last you a lifetime..
But I'd rather have the one that has the smart ingenious things trying to go forward not backward.. I was trying to make things better and easier for the customer..
    ;)

Any source for your claim about the metal? Because I have never heard of such a thing. Toro made claims about their plastic for years, yet they now have switched to metal chutes and anti-clog system. Why is that I wonder? I also wonder why every other company uses shear pins when there is no patent or anything on Toro's system. Smells like marketing BS to me. I break a shear pin about once per decade. It's simply not an issue. One thing you don't mention is that since Toro changes their designs a lot more often, parts on older machines are harder to find than they are for Ariens. Most of their smaller machines are made in Mexico, and their engine supplier is Chinese while Ariens uses an American supplier who builds in China. Toro also has nothing that competes with Rapidtrak nor do they have anything to compete with the SHO models anymore. They have gone fully into Electric, which I feel is important long-term even if the current models are half-baked. Not having any battery ecosystem is going to hurt Ariens.
Oh, and my 23 year old Ariens still worked like new. And with painted metal instead of faded plastic, it still looked almost new too.

I was shopping for a big blower last year after my old but very cool Crary Bearcat finally bit the dust and I couldn’t get parts to fix it. It was a sad day cause it was a killer machine. It didn’t have an impeller. It had a cast iron paddle that threw snow further than any snowblower I have ever seen. When deciding which machine to buy I looked at Ariens, Toro and Husqvarna. After watching countless videos, including yours of course, and reading reviews those three were clearly the top three. The Toro lost me with not having any gear box protection and that plastic joystick chute control just looked and felt like it was asking to freeze and/or break. The Husky lost me with its stupid plastic chute panel down at ground zero where rocks and chunks of ice will hit all the time. I also didn’t like the turning system with those triggers. Just more to likely fail. The Ariens is simply built like a tank and has far less to go wrong due to using quality parts, hardly any plastic and overall simplicity. The Ariens was the most expensive of the three but is clearly worth the small amount of extra money. I ended up spending just a little more and got the Ariens Deluxe 28. Being that I clear my entire block and the alley that extra four inches cut out an entire pass down the alley. When I buy things that cost a fair amount of money I do my research and buy the best. That way it lasts forever if taken care of. I’m hoping to get at least 20 years out of this snowblower and have confidence it’ll make it with little fuss. Keep making these videos brother! I’m pretty mechanically savvy but I’ve even learned a thing or two from your content.

    1. What is the best time to get a deal buying a snow blower...? is there a trick for this...I mean...in the summer, fall or Winter?
    2. Between Ariens deluxe 28 SHO and TORO 828 OAE... What do you think is the best according to your experience?
Thank you so much in advance for your help,

Hey Jorge! Thanks for reaching out. I would say that you can sometimes find deals in late spring as snowblower season comes to an end and stores are clearing them out. Summer will be the best time to find a used snowblower for sure. It will come down to availability for blowers in the summer if you’re looking to buy new.
I lean toward ariens in terms of quality. The newer ones are built a bit better and hold their value over time.

Ariens and Toro both use auto steer. Before pulling the trigger on a snow blower, especially a lager heavier machine and you have uneven terrain, "cracks in driveway" frozen grass at the edge of driveways or sidewalks, packed or frozen crusty snow that will put pressure on one side of the intake shroud, many say that is when the auto turn system is a challenge to use. Some have even shared, when they went back to the dealer to complain, and all adjustments were checked and found to be good according to the manufacture specifications and they were still not satisfied with the performance of the machine, the dealer would have to tell them the machine is not the best one for their particular application. Like everything, do your research. If you have perfect conditions, then auto steer is the best thing sense sliced bread. If you don't, then maybe you would be better off with a solid axle or trigger steer machine.

I realize it's difficult to compare snowthrowers without some snow to try them out on, but I feel that in many of the categories, the size, performance, etc. is virtually identical. A "Win" shouldn't have been awarded for having 2 cc more engine displacement or throwing 3% more per minute. I think the overall scores would have been closer if only significant advantages were awarded a category win. That being said, thank you for making this video and talking about the design differences. I've run into a hidden, frozen newspaper while clearing the driveway, so not having shear pins would scare me.

Perhaps a cool video would be to torture test two units. Have them both eat up some frozen newspapers and see which gearbox holds up best! Thanks for watching! 👍

@@GarageGear your worrying about a dead issue. The gear box is designed to withstand a "no shear pin" design and just kill the engine. It works beautiful. I agree!, couple categories both blowers should have been awarded a positive mark or tie. If your trying to blow 65 ft, neither ones gonna reach. 5 ft is nothing. In town where your driveway is 6 ft from the property line and I can literally throw it on my neighbors roof, so many times I'm fighting not to throw it too for, so 5 ft is not a deal breaker by no means.

I bought a Toro powermax 824OE beginning of 2023. I bought it assembled from a hardware store. When I ran it, the engine ran rough so I contacted Toro (Twice) for information on the Toro brand engine. Information on the engine is not available on their website. Guess what, they would not send me any information on the engine. Sounds like it will be hit and miss if I can get parts when it breaks down. I paid $1200 for the machine. The second time I used the machine, the auger cable fell apart and I had to fix it. I figure the assembler didn't tighten the double nut lock. It's September 2023 now and I just did an oil change on the machine as part of the 5-hour break in maintenance. The oil drain was a pain. It's about the same height as the tire and I had to do a makeshift trough to drain the oil into my reservoir otherwise the oil would of run over the machine and tire. Terrible design. I always thought highly of Toro but will NOT EVER buy another Toro product. It is sad since Toro is a Minnesota corporation and that is where I live.

My thought is that the auger and impeller difference tell most of the story. 11 vs 14 inch diameters seems comparable, but given how quickly the area of a circle and volume of a cylinder scale up with just small changes to diameter, wouldn't this theoretically mean a much bigger capacity for the Ariens? I feel like many of the other wins for the Ariens are rounding errors in comparison, though it's notable that they almost always tip in its favor.
With all that said, they both seem like great machines. The right choice between them seems to boil down to one thing: do the better stats of the Ariens justify the ~20% price premium over the Toro? That depends on your specific application. If the Ariens is only saving you a minute per snowfall then probably not. Both of these machines seem to be well built snow movers with good reputations.

Unbelievable, particularly because it was November in Wisconsin. Been very happy with it. I don't believe your chart had electric ignition listed, but if the Ariens has it, they tie on that round. I did once run my Toro into a 3-foot, 5/16" thick steel yard stake. The auger pulled it around and around and kept going. I had to use an angle grinder to remove it. No damage to the Toro, thank goodness. Great review otherwise. Too bad you couldn't test them side-by-side. Specs don't tell the whole story.

I have owned two Ariens (one given to me and one purchased). I have owned one Toro and one Craftsman. The Ariens machines were MUCH more capable of handling heavy wet snow and plow piles than the Toro. The Toro was as capable as the Ariens at throwing fluffy and intermediate weight snow. The Craftsman fell well short of both the Toro and Ariens on its best days and things (like the chute and deflector controls) broke within the 1st year.
If you can find one when you need it, go with the Ariens. The Toro is an adequate machine that I might buy. I would rather spend several hours shoveling during multiple storms than buy another Craftsman snow blower.

Toro snow blowers consistently outperform the competition in tests even with wet heavy snow.
What's more important when comparing is the horsepower need to be about the same If you have a higher horsepower engine it's obviously going to throw wet snow better.
Overall Toro still wins in performance.
They have great innovations always trying to make things better.
Also in tests Toros anti-clogging system continuously throws snow further in every type of snow than Ariens because it aerates the snow better because some of it gets thrown back on top of the auger which loosens it up also puts less pressure on the engine, the gears and the machine. This is why Toro only needs one belt to push the auger but Ariens needs two of them.
The quick stick is revolutionary I don't know what this guy is talking about The quick stick is one of the most reliable shoot controls there has ever been nobody ever really has issues with them.
The no shear pin technology is genius I've seen it work first hand you hit something hard the machine stops you go right back to snow blowing right after you restart the machine.
Also because of the anti-clogging this is why Toro does not need bigger impellers and augers.
Also a proven fact even though Toro's metal is a little bit thinner it's actually more stronger because the type of metal and process they use to make the metal. Which in turn makes the snow blower lighter, easier to maneuver because it's not as heavy.
They even have an article about why plastic is better than metal and a lot of ways. But people seem to think metal is better for some reason. Some plastic parts are actually as strong if not stronger than metal and never rust and probably lasts forever. Some of their plastic has a lifetime warranty. Not metal.
I mean just look at their entry level snowblower The snowmaster 824. There's a guy named OLDLENN on TH-cam search for him. He snow blows for a living. He used to have the Toro 1024 It was a really old machine He bought it used in finally the bearing broke which connects the housing.
So he bought the snow master 824. Believe it or not it's a single stage snowblower only 24 in with auto turn, only ways 135 lb, has the personal pace system. The guy does over 300 properties a year in Canada!!! HE SAYS HE'LL TAKE THE SNOWMASTER OVER ANY SNOWBLOWER BECAUSE OF ITS SPEED AND IT GOES THROUGH ANYTHING LIKE BUTTER.. come to find out Toro is a genius again. They realize it's not the two-stage snowblower that makes the biggest difference It is the self-propel.. Not to mention the snowmaster wheels are so small but they go right through anything. I MEAN ANYTHING EVEN THE HEAVIEST SNOW IN THE DEEPEST SNOW.
Not to mention the guy said he's had the snow master for 8 years!! Never did any maintenance never did anything to it nothing is broken and it still works perfectly. And because the shoot is plastic it has a lifetime warranty. The only reason why Toro went back to the metal shoots recently is just a shut people up because they think metal is better and they're 100% wrong. They wanted to increase their sales so they gave in even though I think they have sell more snow blowers than any company.
Toro just seems to know what matters and no it doesn't.
Ariens is still just the same old crackers. That horrible crank to turn the shoot is ridiculous. I've tried it before It puts pressure on your back It's like you're in that mechanic position kind of bent over kind of not It's a joke I don't know why people even like it.
The quick stick from Toro is ingenious and amazing. Not to mention they just redesigned the quick stick in the past 3 years they made it much stronger..

    Hi Guy, Two comments.
    a) NOvember 2022, Buffalo had 6+feet of snow. Montreal, zero.
    b) December 10, Buffalo has been clearing snow and snow damage.
Montreal waiting for it's first snow fall. (Usually snows and remains on or around 15Nov)
Usually Montreal is in a snow belt. This year, the snow belt has fallen 100 miles to the south, Great for New York state. Not for Montreal area skiers.
Second part of post. Are there after-market glove warmers for an Arians? If not, I presume there may be battery powered heater-gloves, where there is a heater element in each glove / glove finger.

This seemed a bit biased. For example, some of those were definitely draws (250 vs 252 CC?). Full disclosure, I have owned the Toro joystick model for 19 years with zero problems. It is amazing and very fast to turn. Also, A big advantage to Toro snowthrowers is they do not use shear pins. Additionally, I have never clogged my impeller and never stalled it (outside of where I was negligent replacing a belt - it was 13 years old) . If you want a good snowthrower, where the chute turns fast and across two axis at the same time, that does not clog, where you do not have to worry about breaking shear pins, pick the Toro. In our neighborhood, my neighbors had A Craftsman and and Ariens and after seeing mine perform they both switched to Toro.

JB, I have to share I picked up a Ariens classic 24. Checked out Toro and everything else. To me, the Ariens won hands down as it, imho is better made. Just check out the entire shell, hardware. The whole thing. I could have had the Toro unit with the quickshift, bigger engine. But to me more cables, plastic and such, and not the same overall build quality. IMHO again. The Ariens has a cast iron impeller box, the Toro is aluminum and there are online reports of broken gearboxes. Also the complaints on the Toro plastic chute control stick components breaking. I checked out Toro two days ago to find the control deck is plastic and to down shift gears was difficult pressing hard against the plastic tabs holding the lever in each gear. Over time the pressure of the gearshift lever will break the tabs, especially as the control deck experiences freezing and becomes brittle over the years. After a friend of mine and myself analyzed both brands at various stores we bought the Ariens, he purchased a 24" Deluxe, I got a 20" Compact.

Toro doesn't have sheer pins and instead has some sort of torque sensor, or something, that turn off the motor if to much resistance is hit. I've seen vids of these machines being a real bi*** with turning off all the time. Also, I believe I would prefer to the sheer pins anyway. I also agree with others that some of the points awarded were more like ties, which would bring them closer to each other. However, the larger auger and impeller alone is a reason to get the Ariens.
