Rise of the SNP: the inside story

  • In less than a decade the SNP has become the dominant political force in Scotland; despite losing an independence referendum, they took 56 of Scotland's 59 seats at the general election.
But where did the SNP's success come from - and can it survive against Corbyn-mania and a Tory majority government?

I would be really interested to see what new parties would emerge in an independent Scotland or how the policies and priorities of Old parties would change to accommodate independence. The strange thing is I might be liable to voting Liberal Democrat or Labour or Conservative or SNP after independence because the New Scottish Prioritized parties agenda's will have completely different purposes when their policies exclude the UK.

It would be irrelevant anyway, because the SNP would straight away, surrender any kind of Scottish sovereignty to a much larger, undemocratic, unpredictable, power like the European Union. In reality, the last thing that the SNP wants is Scottish Independence. The SNP's only purpose is to break away from the UK, which will cause unimaginable economic and social devastation in Scotland. Added to that is the expected economic and social devastation from the looming global financial crash. Now is certainly not the time to be messing around with speculative issues, like so called, pseudo Scottish Independence. Now is the time to be planning and implementing strategies to weather the likely chaos from the crash of the world's currencies, and the unprecedented economic recession or depression that will ensue. I'm a 20 year old Scottish born and bred citizen and I for one will never put pen to paper for the SNP. Why? I stand with centre-left values, but possibly more centre than left, and I'm an internationalist therefore I support countries/nations working together to create better societies. SNP representatives only seem to be interested in their own political gain i.e. their pockets and not for the people of Scotland, not one bit!
People here vote for the SNP, but if they keep going on the way they are, taking voters for granted, 'standing' on a left-wing platform at election time then standing on a centre-right platform in Holyrood and contradicting themselves in Westminster to score political points, then they'll be obsolete by 2021 and worryingly as we have seen from the election a fortnight ago, the Conservative Party in Scotland could end up being the Government if Labour don't start to understand the mood of the Scottish electorate, which is NOT independence for Scotland, in which I believe a strong and true Labour message could destroy any case for it in the future.

Congrats, you've described every politician ever. Democracy is all about picking your poison instead of letting others choose it for you.
I think Labour lost a lot of credibility when they shared a platform with the Tories back in 2014, even with lefty 'no' voters. In my opinion, the Tories can thank disenfranchised Lib-dems for their recent gains, the SNP can thank Labour for theirs.

AProudScotsman May I just remind you that not everyone in scotland voted to remain in the EU and therefore it is not accurate to say that the SNP represents all of scotland. Furthermore the turnout for the brexit vote was also significantly lower than that of the indyref, making that more inaccurate. Not all scots wish to stay within the EU. The same for the argument that suggests there is a high demand for indyref2, which is also inaccurate as there clearly is not. The petition against it gained over 100,000 signatures in one day. I will restate here that the snp does not speak for all of scotland.
Additionally, I have had to suffer through the pathetic education system put in place by the snp. It is a complete shambles when you compare it to before the snp were in power. Attainment is painfully low. Yet the snp are still focused on this "indyref". They have more important things to be getting on with, you must agree. For the benefit of this generation instead of focusing purely on the future. get on with the day job.
And of course the snp are divisive. Anyone can see this. We have just been through two traumatic referendums. The snp cannot respect the democratic vote of the people, unlike Theresa May and the tories in regards to brexit. announcing this second referendum is a divisive move. A referendum puts scotland through a period of instability and completely polarises the country. Why would you want this again? This is an overused term but appropriate - it was once in a generation. Just because of brexit does not mean scotland wants a referendum. We will not be accepted into the EU - right at the back of the queue. The snp have been let off too many times and it is time we had Ruth Davidson, a strong opposition, and Theresa May, a strong leader ( in comparison to Nicola ) put them in their place and tell them no.
I posted the original comment a year ago. I still stand by the same opinion. The snp are liars ( as proven through 2014 ref) and are unreliable. I don't want the divisiveness, I want stability and a future that I can look forward to within Scotland. The snp cannot provide this.
