Could Sunak D-Day disaster cause Tory election wipeout?

  • Rishi Sunak has apologised and admitted it was a “mistake” to leave D-Day commemorations early, but many in the Conservative Party are already furious with the prime minister and Labour’s Keir Starmer has said he “has to explain” the decision.
    [Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...]
    So why did he do it? Having spent the campaign so far reaching out to the very voters who hold respect for history and veterans so dear.
    Is this the moment the game is up and closing the gap on Labour becomes unrecoverable?
    Nigel Farage is already out there saying it shows Sunak isn't patriotic.
    We were joined by Conservative Home’s Henry Hill, Boris Johnson’s former director of communications Guto Harri and Labour’s Jonathan Ashworth.
    Produced by Calum Fraser, Rob Thomson, Nick Jackson and Annie La Vespa

    My mother was in the Army in WWII, and worked as an aircraft plotter. She was bombed once but luckily survived. One of her brothers, my uncle, fought in North Africa and another uncle fought in the far East and was a prisoner of the Japanese. My father, an American citizen, volunteered for the RAF in 1939 and became a Flight-Sergeant, tail gunner in Lancaster bombers. Even though I never fought in a war or police action, I too volunteered for the Army and was a qualified Aircraft Technician with REME, and served in the UK and Germany. I find it beyond disgraceful that Prime Minister Sunak chose to disrespect my relatives in the way he has. The sooner this self-serving man, and his cronies, are gone, the better off this country will be. I cannot forgive him.

    • @ColaSpandex
      @ColaSpandex 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
      England mourns for her dead across the sea.
      Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
      Fallen in the cause of the free.
      Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
      Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
      There is music in the midst of desolation
      And a glory that shines upon our tears.
      They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
      Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
      They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
      They fell with their faces to the foe.
      They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
      Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
      At the going down of the sun and in the morning
      We will remember them.
      They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
      They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
      They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
      They sleep beyond England's foam.
      But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
      Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
      To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
      As the stars are known to the Night;
      As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
      Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
      As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
      To the end, to the end, they remain.

    Be honest about it. Sunak is not an ethnic Brit. He gives lip service to British History and culture but it is not in his DNA. My father was discharged in 1943 a paraplegic after 14 years in the British army. It is the knowledge of what he did for this country and living with his legacy of that service that gives me "pride and respect" to those who served this nation. It is in my DNA and it is in the DNA of most ethnic Brits. Sunak and a great majority of those of immigrant backgrounds do not have that heritage, or pride in our country and its past achievements; and it shows as seen here. There, I have spoken a 'truism.' Spot on.
      Not only was Sunak's actions morally reprehensible and an insult to the D-Day veterans and world leaders gathered on Thursday, it demonstrated zero political instincts.
      What should have been an easy slot-in for Sunak to show that he's a 'world statesman' (because, as PM presiding over an important historical moment naturally confers such an impression), turned into a catastrophic own-goal.

    It's frustrating and disappointing to see the Prime Minister leaving early from the D-Day ceremonies for election purposes. It feels disrespectful, especially when young people are being asked to serve in the military, potentially risking their lives in wars. Leaving the ceremonies prematurely seems to show a lack of appreciation and gratitude for their sacrifices, prioritizing political gain over honoring those who serve.

    This was not just a mistake, Rishi has shown a massive disrespect to everyone who was involved in the second world war and their families, this includes most British 50 plus year olds as we have all been changed by that war and the operation overlord, our granddad's endured unimaginable horrors in that conflict and they most likely never got over it fully like my grandad, so for Rishi to not recognise that going to that commemoration should be the greatest honour of his life and to just leave early and get Cameron to stand in for him is the ultimate insult for me.
