Could Sunak D-Day disaster cause Tory election wipeout?

- Rishi Sunak has apologised and admitted it was a “mistake” to leave D-Day commemorations early, but many in the Conservative Party are already furious with the prime minister and Labour’s Keir Starmer has said he “has to explain” the decision.
[Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...]
So why did he do it? Having spent the campaign so far reaching out to the very voters who hold respect for history and veterans so dear.
Is this the moment the game is up and closing the gap on Labour becomes unrecoverable?
Nigel Farage is already out there saying it shows Sunak isn't patriotic.
We were joined by Conservative Home’s Henry Hill, Boris Johnson’s former director of communications Guto Harri and Labour’s Jonathan Ashworth.

My mother was in the Army in WWII, and worked as an aircraft plotter. She was bombed once but luckily survived. One of her brothers, my uncle, fought in North Africa and another uncle fought in the far East and was a prisoner of the Japanese. My father, an American citizen, volunteered for the RAF in 1939 and became a Flight-Sergeant, tail gunner in Lancaster bombers. Even though I never fought in a war or police action, I too volunteered for the Army and was a qualified Aircraft Technician with REME, and served in the UK and Germany. I find it beyond disgraceful that Prime Minister Sunak chose to disrespect my relatives in the way he has. The level of disrespect to the fallen is immeasurable.
Why would an Indian care about British dead?
With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.
Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.
But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;
As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

Be honest about it. Sunak is not an ethnic Brit. He gives lip service to British History and culture but it is not in his DNA. My father was discharged in 1943 a paraplegic after 14 years in the British army. It is the knowledge of what he did for this country and living with his legacy of that service that gives me "pride and respect" to those who served this nation. It is in my DNA and it is in the DNA of most ethnic Brits. Sunak and a great majority of those of immigrant backgrounds do not have that heritage, or pride in our country and its past achievements; and it shows as seen here. There, I have spoken a 'truism.' Leaving the D Day anniversary early just shows how much wishi washi sunak cares about this country what an embarrassment he is to the UK.
Unforgivable from a moral point of view. This was an extremely important event that transcends any election.
Furthermore, Sunak has revealed himself to be utterly stupid to not realise that commemorating with world leaders at D-Day anniversary IS an election strategy. This guy has no business being PM.
Spot on.
Not only was Sunak's actions morally reprehensible and an insult to the D-Day veterans and world leaders gathered on Thursday, it demonstrated zero political instincts.
What should have been an easy slot-in for Sunak to show that he's a 'world statesman' (because, as PM presiding over an important historical moment naturally confers such an impression), turned into a catastrophic own-goal.
As much as I generally value morality more than any other qualities, when it comes to being Prime Minister, it's arguably Sunak's incompetence and cluelessness that are even more fatal than his lack of personal integrity.

Man wearing shorts.
Is that all you got from the discussion?
@@hypsyzygy506It's distracting and unprofessional. As an autistic who spent decades trying to dress and act in socially acceptable ways to make allistics comfortable, I think he could probably have deigned to make this tiny concession to convention.
@@hypsyzygy506 yes. I’m turning it off. Revolting
Exactly
The contempt for Reform and the like is exactly why people are voting for them
Or, just possibly, the Reform loonies are contemptible and only the rabid gammonfolk would ever vote for them. I mean, Lee Anderson? Nigel the Venomous Toad? Seriously? Why not just exhume Enoch Powell or Oswald Mosley?
Yes, we already know actual self-examination about why people dislike them is beyond that lot.
I'm voting for the Reform party. Neither Sunak or, Starmer, have the answers for the problems, that we are facing. Don't waste your vote on either of them!
Hold on a moment, nobody died because Sunak came home early, unlike his totally stupid eat out to help the pandemic brainwave. It has been obvious that Sunak has appallingly poor judgement (even by Tory standards) ever since then.
Thousands died eighty years ago and he couldn't be bothered to stay the whole day and meet with other world leaders and remember their dead on behalf of all UK citizens, I'm ashamed and embarrassed.
Rationally you are correct but World War Two is hugely culturally symbolic in Britain. The Tories died off the beaches today
@@HuplesCat But feelings DO matter. Reason is just a tool . It doesn’t reflect the soul.
And They All Partied When People Died NEVER EVER FORGET IT
Vote Reform
Get them all out and shake it up a bit.
It's about time.
It wasn’t “a mistake”. It was utterly intentional. It’s just that him and his advisors are so thick, they got it completely wrong.
The Conservatives need to get rid of him lively. He is an absolute disgrace. It won't save them but they might save a bit of face for 5 years time.
But does anyone really want them coming back in 5 years? For what possible purpose? They have made Britain a poor, broken, irrelevant country. What more is there for them to do? Bring back flogging for ungrateful peasants who don't doff their caps smartly enough?
This was not just a mistake, Rishi has shown a massive disrespect to everyone who was involved in the second world war and their families, this includes most British 50 plus year olds as we have all been changed by that war and the operation overlord, our granddad's endured unimaginable horrors in that conflict and they most likely never got over it fully like my grandad, so for Rishi to not recognise that going to that commemoration should be the greatest honour of his life and to just leave early and get Cameron to stand in for him is the ultimate insult for me. I feel sorry for Rishi if this is the level of compassion he has.
With his latest blunder over D Day, you could be forgiven thinking the Prime Minister wishes to get out as “Sunak” possible! If true, then that wish will be granted very soon.
Guto Harri: 9:13 "This isn't the time for cheap shots" 6:20 "Remember Gordon Brown thinking that one person was scum?"
How quickly they forget... 🤨
The reason why this is important is because it demonstrates a total lack of respect for the electorate AND worse….appalling judgement!
No body would have criticized the PM for staying.
Therefore this does matter…it gives us a view of the man and it is not good!
