Could Sunak D-Day disaster cause Tory election wipeout?

  • Rishi Sunak has apologised and admitted it was a “mistake” to leave D-Day commemorations early, but many in the Conservative Party are already furious with the prime minister and Labour’s Keir Starmer has said he “has to explain” the decision.
    [Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...]
    So why did he do it? Having spent the campaign so far reaching out to the very voters who hold respect for history and veterans so dear.
    Is this the moment the game is up and closing the gap on Labour becomes unrecoverable?
    Nigel Farage is already out there saying it shows Sunak isn't patriotic.
    We were joined by Conservative Home’s Henry Hill, Boris Johnson’s former director of communications Guto Harri and Labour’s Jonathan Ashworth.
    Produced by Calum Fraser, Rob Thomson, Nick Jackson and Annie La Vespa

    My mother was in the Army in WWII, and worked as an aircraft plotter. She was bombed once but luckily survived. One of her brothers, my uncle, fought in North Africa and another uncle fought in the far East and was a prisoner of the Japanese. My father, an American citizen, volunteered for the RAF in 1939 and became a Flight-Sergeant, tail gunner in Lancaster bombers. Even though I never fought in a war or police action, I too volunteered for the Army and was a qualified Aircraft Technician with REME, and served in the UK and Germany. I find it beyond disgraceful that Prime Minister Sunak chose to disrespect my relatives in the way he has. The sooner this self-serving man, and his cronies, are gone, the better off this country will be. I cannot forgive him.

      With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
      England mourns for her dead across the sea.
      Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
      Fallen in the cause of the free.
      Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
      Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
      There is music in the midst of desolation
      And a glory that shines upon our tears.
      They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
      Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
      They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
      They fell with their faces to the foe.
      They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
      Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
      At the going down of the sun and in the morning
      We will remember them.
      They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
      They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
      They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
      They sleep beyond England's foam.
      But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
      Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
      To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
      As the stars are known to the Night;
      As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
      Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
      As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
      To the end, to the end, they remain.

    Be honest about it. Sunak is not an ethnic Brit. He gives lip service to British History and culture but it is not in his DNA. My father was discharged in 1943 a paraplegic after 14 years in the British army. It is the knowledge of what he did for this country and living with his legacy of that service that gives me "pride and respect" to those who served this nation. It is in my DNA and it is in the DNA of most ethnic Brits. Sunak and a great majority of those of immigrant backgrounds do not have that heritage, or pride in our country and its past achievements; and it shows as seen here. There, I have spoken a 'truism.' I must be a racist and must be condemned.

    When Gordon Brown referred to the bigoted woman as a bigotted woman, I thought he was spot on.
    What he did wrong was to apologise and grovel. He should have said that people shouldn't complain about immigration and they are wrong because that rhetoric is harmful to the country.
    Pandering to bigots has ruined Britain for ever.

    I live in a very safe Tory seat - it's been Tory since it's inception and yet, because of Reform, there is a recent opinion poll that shows that Labour have a chance of squeaking the seat because Reform has split the vote. To dismiss Reform is a courageous move for a Tory.

Or are you disagreeing with me that the Tories are foolish to dismiss Reform (courageous being a synonym for stupid in my original sentence).
      A word of warning if you are a supporter of Reform. When you lend your vote to an obvious grifter like Farage - don't be too upset when it turns out he's conning you too. A man who wants immigration down to zero and yet was married to an immigrant isn't really anti-immigration.

    My uncle died on that beach. Fishy Rishi showed imense disrespect to those who gave their lives on that day. His lame excuse was that his itinerary was set weeks ago and he couldn't change it. My question to him would be how many YEARS ago was the 80th anniversary of the D-day Landings set into his itinerary ? It is an event which should have been in his itinerary for years and carved in stone so it could not be changed. The truth is he could no care less.

    This was not just a mistake, Rishi has shown a massive disrespect to everyone who was involved in the second world war and their families, this includes most British 50 plus year olds as we have all been changed by that war and the operation overlord, our granddad's endured unimaginable horrors in that conflict and they most likely never got over it fully like my grandad, so for Rishi to not recognise that going to that commemoration should be the greatest honour of his life and to just leave early and get Cameron to stand in for him is the ultimate insult for me. I feel sorry for Rishi if this is the level of compassion he has.
