We chose the unicorn because the English national animal is a lion and Unicorns are the enemy of lions. The thistle was chosen because when we were being invaded by vikings one of them stepped on a thistle alerting us to their presence so we could fight them off.

I am annoyed with voters in England, Scotland and wales that didn't vote against brexit. Especially with Scotland and northern Ireland having the lowest turnout of any country in the uk. Also people in England who probably thought brexit wouldn't happen.
Well considering he lives in America and reports news for America most of the time, then yeah I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't well known in the UK, but he actually is. He got more than 4 million views per week for his first season, and Huffington post called his program, "the best television show of 2014". Sounds like you're the one being a twat here since you're the only one insulting people for liking a rather popular show. And if you want to say someone is retarded, I'd say the guy that decided to shit on someone in the comment section of the person's youtube channel, (you know, the one filled with his fans), is pretty retarded, and that would be you.
@Tiny mod why are you acting like a 12 year old? You are trying to be edgey, you are clearly not. Is something bothering you? If so can we be of any assistance?
4:46 It's even more sick when you learn that Scots chose the unicorn for their naitonal symbol because in the legends it is the only animal that can defeat a lion. And guess who's national animal is a lion? ;)
@Lm ao For what reason would Scotland not be accepted? We meet all the requirements, the only issue would be worries of other territories within the EU (Catalonia for example) getting the same idea. If the whole of the EU was to reject Scotland on the basis of some of their member states own internal affairs (hardly Scotlands fault) then they would show themselves to be incredibly undemocratic and unwelcoming, and would be shooting themselves in the foot for the world to see. That wouldn't happen, we would be welcomed, especially after Brexit.
@@acebalistic1358 yeah the big worry was Spain because of Catalonia, but Spain recently intervened and said they wouldn’t block an independent Scotland’s entry.
@@Shmingleshmangle The reason why the EU won't accept Scotland immediately is that it lacks several institutions and powers right now. Those need to be set up and develop a track record, as they will be the ones implementing both Scottish and EU policies. A far more logical progression would be for Scotland to join the EFTA, which it would be able to do almost immediately. The EEA accession would be the next step, and that too should not be too hard in principle (see below). After that, EU accession can be considered. However, a lot will be determined by the way the English border is resolved.
@@lacdirk I don't disagree with any of that, I know it would take time but it's not impossible like many make it out to be. Also, the border is an issue created by English voters who want brexit, not Scottish voters who voted against it. If Brexit hadn't happened, and Scotland was independent and in the EU alongside England then we would have no issues. Sadly it's another classic example of us getting the opposite of what we vote for/English voters and Westminster dictating what happens to the lives of people here in Scotland.

Fun fact: After they repealed the ban on kilts, a new highland dance was made called the Seann Triubhas (meaning: Sean’s trousers). The dance involved many movements indicative of shaking and sliding off pants. As a qualified high-level highland dancer I can say that you can really tell how happy the Scots were when they made this dance.
I was just thinking this as I’m watching this, thinking about every vote for the current Tory government in the recent years and seeing that basically all of Scotland did not vote for them.

Fun fact: one of the popular legends around the thistle becoming the national flower of Scotland is that the English were tying to scale the walls of Edinburgh at night in order to invade, yet one of the English soldiers accidentally grasped a thistle while climbing, letting out a piercing cry that woke up the guards, who then successfully repelled them. Granted there’s no evidence behind this story, yet it’s still a pretty fun tale...
Well, as the saying goes: "It may not be true, but it does make a good story". ;-) And about the thistle: I think a country which chooses a flower as its national symbol which is at the same time beautiful and to be handled with care to not hurt yourself is a force to be reckoned with, because that's a country with an attitude, as the motto "Nemo me impune lacessit" ("No one provokes me with impunity", or in Scots "Wha daur meddle wi' me?") on the Scottish coat of arms already strongly suggests in the first place. :-)

@@Galaxy-zb2ee Some senator literally quoted her little essay against trans people as he blocked the vote on an LGBTQ bill. And I think you're underestimating how much her "taking a stand" legitimized transphobia in the media landscape, especially in the UK.
@@baguettegott3409 By "some senator" I presume your referencing Senator James Lankford. Senator James Lankford is a right-wing, Baptist (i.e. a religious figure; protestant), republican who has held power since 2015. Given their religious beliefs, it can be assumed they held some discriminatory opinion on LGBT issues long before reading JK. Rowling's writings. Given his quotation of her, it can be agreed that Senator James Lankford seemingly admires, respects, or has given thought to JK. Rowling, but is this, factoring in Senator James Lankford's religious beliefs (which also include moral beliefs), equivalent to Senator James Lankford being influenced by JK. Rowling? Is influence the same as agreement? In my own opinion, I think the answer is both yes and no. It depends on the time scale. For example, I would be much quicker to blame the Church and the Bible itself on Senator James Lankford's beliefs than the views than JK. Rowlings. Senator James Lankford agrees with the Bible, yes, - but presumably only agrees with such a book due to its influence as, being in a religious family, it was probably his only vessel for learning about issues - it played a governing role. If JK. Rowling has played a parental or governing figure, such as the Church, I'd be much more inclined to say they had influence, but they did not (one may be tempted to reference JK. Rowling also wrote successful books, but I've yet to see any transphobia in them, just bad writing and a severe lack of snakes for a book with a snake talker). You may be correct on the media argument, or you may not - I don't know since I don't pay attention to media, and if everyone stopped paying attention to the media, the media wouldn't have any influence in the first place. *We can all do our bit by ignoring people in the media.*

@@quartzking3997 That is, of course, meaningless - not to mention pointless when the issue is STABILITY, not relative value. More important questions are: What can I buy with my income? Are necessary imports getting pricier due to a weakened currency? Etc. Etc. Etc. And in case you’ve forgotten, the pound has lost 10%-20% of it value against the Euro since the Brexit process began and though it has rallied against the dollar after losing around 17%, it is still about 6% under the pre-Brexit exchange rate. As a mainland European who briefly lived in the UK prior to Brexit and used to buy stuff online from there, the low value of the pound is obvious, since I continuously have to remind myself to recalculate at a significantly lower rate than I reflexively do. Of course, this issue also comes up far less frequently, since it rarely makes sense (due to added duties) to purchase stuff from the UK after it left the common market.
@quartz king the worth of one currency as expressed in another currency is pretty meaningless. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. If the scots knew then what they know now, I have no doubt they would have voted for independence when they had the chance. The U.K Government aren’t stupid. They can see this, which is why they presently won’t grant them another referendum. But it’s a dangerous game they’re playing, because they must know that calls for another referendum will only grow stronger the longer it continues to be refused, with hostilities and resentment growing alongside it.
They don't need the UK to grant them another referendum. They don't even need to go to war. They have the UK's nukes-all of them. "We're leaving and we want you to come get these horse shit nuclear weapons that shouldn't even exist" is an enormously, enormously powerful statement, because nobody wants to tell you you can keep the nukes but they're not letting you leave. If you let them leave and then invade, it's a war of aggression, they have their own army, NATO shows up, the UN throws sanctions at them, the EU starts causing economic damage, the WTO starts causing economic damage, and everything gets very bad.
The UK is the only country in history to grant part of itself the right to vote for independence. Parts of France, spain, russia, canada and the US have large independence movements, but none have been given a chance to decide.

Scotland chose the unicorn because they eat lions in Greek mythology. Lions were historically England’s choice for their national animal as shown on the coat of arms.
I think it has more to do with the fact that in Celtic mythology the unicorn represents endurance, healing, gentleness, fertility, and also a protector against evil.
There aren't any unicorns in Greek mythology. Writers from the 1800 instead ascribed the Unicorn's symbolism to the fact that it can't be captured or tamed.

Had Scotland voted to leave the UK in 2014, it would also have lost membership of the EU because the UK was the member, not Scotland. So if Scotland had voted to leave it would have had its own brexit, but worse, because it would also have lost its largest trading partner.
@@Spearca Depends on how Scotland does it, depends if Brexit goes through. Posting things as casual assurances should be done more carefully. Especially after Brexit.
I used to think European Unity was a Good Idea. But it isn't, with Germany's fossil carbon trade ruling the roost. It is time for Brexit, Eirexit, Frexit, Czecxit, and Switzexit. The first time I read about the Energiewende proposal, I saw it immediately as a proposal to "replace" nuclear, which could oust fossil carbon, with "renewable energy", that is no threat to them.
We have both but don’t come here for the landscape wind turbines cover the hills around my house. They cover the whole of areas surrounding places like New Lanark. The falls of Clyde are only worth seeing twice a year when the wee dam is opened. The dam powers two power stations along the falls.
@Toori Baba Landscape is pretty important regarding sustainable development, it's why we do landscape visual impact assessments in Scotland (LVIA) to minimise their impact on other aspects aside from the environment (social & economic). The place Lew 287 is talking about does have a massive number of wind turbines, though they don't significantly impact the view. Main problem with wind turbines in Scotland are their impact on peatland, an important wildlife habitat and highly effective carbon sink. Often developers will come in stating that they'll carefully transplant peat if necessary, but often end up just chucking in big pile, resulting in much of sequestered carbon to be released into the atmosphere. They are fined for this, but the damage is already done.
@Toori Baba I am amazed at how inefficiently even a 102 metre head of water makes use of the solar energy that produced it. With a gravitational field that gives an acceleration of 9.81 m/s/s, each kilogram (kg) of water has a potential energy at that height, of one kJ (kilojoule). The solar energy required to evaporate that kg of water, a volume of one litre, is 2250 kJ. Hydro is the ONLY solar power worth anything, but don't imagine it's efficient. Nuclear power, owing to the fact that tiny amounts of uranium, and since the 1960s thorium, can be used to deliver as much energy as millions of times their mass of anything chemical, whether it be coal, or methane, or octane, AND oxygen, or for more violent uses, the nitroglycerine in dynamite, or tri-nitro-toluol (TNT)
@Toori Baba As for wind and solar, consider the fact that to stop making oceanic acidification and biosphere warming even worse, we need to END all fossil CO₂ emissions. The mastermind of Energiewende in Germany is now promoting a gas pipeline to bring methane from Russia to Germany. The fossil carbon industries in Germany encouraged the idea that replacing nuclear with "renewables" was a Good idea, quite simply because they know better than anybody that wind and solar are no threat to their existence, whereas France managed to Do Without coal from the Ruhr, by Électricité de France's building nuclear power plants. Moles for the Fossil Fuel Filth have somehow got the monstrous untruth accepted in France by more than half of the people sampled in a recent poll, that nuclear power is responsible for more global warming than coal burning. This, in the land of Lavoisier, who figured out that Joseph Priestley's "dephlogisticated air" was a single gas, and called it oxygen. Priestley had made a brilliant discovery, but it's slightly incorrect to say he discovered oxygen.

Mode Liukas It will settle down, anger and division is rife at the moment but we will all come together for the betterment of our countries. I still think leaving the EU was foolish but I also think people voted for a legitimate reason, we really are taking in fair to many immigrants
About EU immigrants there is nothing you can really do. But its completely your own fault for having some many Africans Muslims Asians most of them have British passports to. But i will agree that all of EU must have a strong borders especially around the South countries especially Spain or Italy.
Although there are obviously more serious problems than flags when it comes to countries/territories becoming independent, I find it very petty that flags are always a concern. I remember debating with a friend of mine on why the US territories and D.C. should become legitimate states and his only offense to the idea of adding 6 states was that the US flag would need more stars. I mean there are legitimate arguments as to the pros and cons of statehood for each and you literally base your decision on a flag?
Yup, same. I'm from Serbia, who got a new flag after we split up from Montenegro, I think it was 2006, and I'm still not sure what the proper color order on the flag is, but I know damn well I have to spend hours on the border if I want to get to the sea, and we have no seaside ports anymore, negativdly affecting trade.
As a descendant of Edward I (Hammer of the Scots), I say free Scotland. They should have their independence. Especially after seeing Cameron obvious disdain for them.
I don,t have strong feelings either way but using David Cameron as a reason to vote yes seems short sighted as David Cameron is temporary. Its like the idiots in the u.s. who say they'll leave the country if a president they don't like is elected.
von king It's the past hundreds of years that makes the Scots want to leave, not Cameron. I'm English, but I hope the Scots vote yes. They've been treated badly by Westminster for so many years they would be better off as a sovereign state. Only then would England treat them with the respect they deserve. England and Scotland need each other, but as equal partners, not as master and servant.

What's funny is that as a Norwegian I am strongly against my country joining the EU, but at the same time I was equally opposed to the Brexit. :) There is a rational explanation though. 1. UK's economy is much more competitive than Norway's economy on the continental market, especially agriculture. This means that protectionism is essential for Norwegian industry to survive. This is not the case regarding the UK, at least not to the same extent. 2. In general, I very much like the concept of the EU, so I don't want to see it fail. However, Norway is irrelevant in the larger scheme of things here, it does not affect the faith of EU. UK on the other hand is influential enough that it will send shock waves through the entire union if they leave, possibly even sparking a domino effect. That would be a catastrophe for Europe IMO.
no way for a domino effect, most of the fascist movements have stopped talking about leaving EU. Brexit has provided a really needed reality check for others.
Norway is part of the European Economic Area, the European Single Market and Schengen Area. It contributes financial and implements EU directives and regulations in national law. So the ties are very close between Norway and EU even without being a member. So you may call that a "EU membership light" However, agriculture and fishing regulations are not part of the European Economic Area - that is a main difference.

+Nicholas Kaizer English King's used to be given exotic animals as presents from other nations and Kingdoms. The Tower of London used to keep Barbary Lions, the first one being a present. When one died, they'd get another. And they'd feed it beer and incredibly inappropriate food for a lion. And then it would die prematurely and then they would get another lion. Many times, the lions would escape the Tower of London and kill Londoners. It wasn't until they built the London Zoo that they stopped keeping exotic animals at the Tower of London. When they dug up the old moat around the tower, they found Barbary lion bones and other extinct exotic animals. Of course, this has nothing to do with why those animals went extinct. *cough cough*

The best representation of Scotland and England's relationship is the chain on the unicorn. The unicorn is scotlands national animal because it can't be tamed. So on the British crest the lion wears a crown and the unicorn is chained up
Except the Unicorn is also wearing a crown and has always been depicted as chained, even in Scotlands own coat of arms. The unicorn is chained by a crown in fact, _probably_ as a reference to the Kings of Scotland using royal power to control the country.
We chose the unicorn because the English national animal is a lion and Unicorns are the enemy of lions.
The thistle was chosen because when we were being invaded by vikings one of them stepped on a thistle alerting us to their presence so we could fight them off.
So Scotlands national things are just middle fingers to other people. Awesome.

Ironically, Scotland would probably have been accepted into the EU by now if they had become independent.
@Clx L actually the EU has preemptively said they would admit Scotland to the EU if it became independent. So I think that poll was not true..

Well, as the saying goes: "It may not be true, but it does make a good story". ;-)
And about the thistle: I think a country which chooses a flower as its national symbol which is at the same time beautiful and to be handled with care to not hurt yourself is a force to be reckoned with, because that's a country with an attitude, as the motto "Nemo me impune lacessit" ("No one provokes me with impunity", or in Scots "Wha daur meddle wi' me?") on the Scottish coat of arms already strongly suggests in the first place.

More important questions are: What can I buy with my income? Are necessary imports getting pricier due to a weakened currency? Etc. Etc. Etc.

As a mainland European who briefly lived in the UK prior to Brexit and used to buy stuff online from there, the low value of the pound is obvious, since I continuously have to remind myself to recalculate at a significantly lower rate than I reflexively do. Oliver is a great comedian. He is also great at gesturing at both sides of an argument-even though the side with which he doesn’t personally agree is usually savaged with satire. Still, the comedy makes it all palatable. Is this the future of how the public is educated on the issues of the day?

As a Scot: WE COULD HAVE HAD IT AAAAAAALL
Scotland chose the unicorn because they eat lions in Greek mythology. Lions were historically England’s choice for their national animal as shown on the coat of arms.
That is very petty
Awesome! I love the Scots for that move!

The unicorn could only calm down if he was allowed to 'rest his head in a virgin's lap' in the forest.

They should have left. They wouldn’t be in this brexit mess now if they had.
Yes, they would. Scotland would have left the EU along with the UK.
Jock Duff Scotland voted to stay in the EU during the Brexit vote. This, had they been independent, they would not have chosen to leave the EU.
This is only 8 years old yet somehow 15 prime ministers ago.
Windpower is actually a great option for Scotland
Or hydro
Priestley had made a brilliant discovery, but it's slightly incorrect to say he discovered oxygen.
last time I watched this the UK was still in the EU
The U.K. Is still in the eu at the moment
Its not EU that is falling apart its UK itself, Scotland leaves sooner or later . Northern Ireland either becomes independent or forms a union with the Republic of Ireland and. Wales might be the only one that will stay forever with England .
Beforehand, I would never have wanted Scotland or N. Ireland to secede from the union. Now however, I wouldn't mind - they voted by clear margins to stay, and understandably do not want Conservative twats taking them down with the ship.
It's 12:30 at night and I'm supposed to be writing a paper on Colombia and the FARC mines, yet instead I'm watching this.....so far, I regret nothing.
Yup, same. I'm from Serbia, who got a new flag after we split up from Montenegro, I think it was 2006, and I'm still not sure what the proper color order on the flag is, but I know damn well I have to spend hours on the border if I want to get to the sea, and we have no seaside ports anymore, negativdly affecting trade.
flags are a symbol of the totality of a country and its being. it seems stupid but in reality it is immensely important

Norway have been trying to leave EU trade arrangements since 1979? and they are still tied to it.
no way for a domino effect, most of the fascist movements have stopped talking about leaving EU.

Also, the National Animal of England is a Barbary Lion... Which not only never lived in England, is now extinct in the wild.
+Nicholas Kaizer yesss, but at least it did exist at one point, unlike the dragon & the unicorn
