      Exactly. They said "strong-armed" for Ireland (understatement of the century) but forget that Wales was literally conquered piece meal over the course of centuries. We resisted and resisted until we couldn't anymore and were finally annexed against our will.

    "Enland was joined with Wales in 1536". What you mean is that Wales was unilaterally annexed by England's parliament under HenryVIII after having been conquered in 1282 and subsequently brutally subjugated, the latter having been expunged from the historical record. After annexation Wales has been exploited; legal and administrative steps taken in London to destroy the Welsh language. Now Wales is neglected and left to rot by successive Westminster governments, Tory & Labour. If Wales doesn't vote for independence it faces continued neglect and decline. There is no other alternative other than independence of Westminster.

      Not really. Scotland is a net recipient of taxpayer money and relies on Tourism from the rest of the UK. In the event that Scotland did leave, it would concentrate wealth in England, Wales and NI, cause increased tourism to these areas, turbocharging the remaining UK economies further. I am a bit concerned as to the wider implications on democracy. There are Unionists in Scotland who won the vote in 2014, were told they were never going to have to vote on this again, and here we are in 2021. This is not how UK democracy is supposed to work. There is no sense of fairplay.

    Actually, Wales was invaded and conquered by England in 1282 then ruled as the king’s personal fief. In 1536, it was formally annexed, giving Wales representation in parliament but forcing English law and administration upon it. But sure, just call that “joined” if that makes you feel better.

So yeah Brexit is seen by many Scots as a betrayal of the 2014 referendum or at the very least a valid reason to redo the referendum since the situation has changed dramatically.

    • @HaiLsKuNkY
      @HaiLsKuNkY 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      no because the Brexit referendum was always on the cards because in 2014 UKIP got the most votes in the EU referendum, so David Cameron said he would hold a referendum on EU membership if he got elected in 2015.. which is why the SNP put the clause on its manifesto that they would hold another referendum with material constitutional change. they should have waited until after Brexit to call for a referendum.

      Exactly. The casus of Czechoslovakia is the most valid for all arguments for and against the split of Scotland and England.
      However, after the split, both countries of former Czechoslovakia get access to a larger market and Union with the EU. Here we have one part of Union - England and Wales - which voted for brexit and the second part - Scotland (and N.Ireland) - which wanted to stay in the EU.
      The problem with Scotland is - when they had referendum, England told them they would bar them from access to EU. After the Brexit, Scotland wanting to join EU will have to sort their border with England. To have a physical border with your biggest market is a pain and recipe for an economical downturn. It can be done, it is not impossible, but it is a pain - just look at the position of post communist countries after 1989, the USRR was their biggest market and it took years for them to realign with other markets.
      Practically, after leaving the UK, Scotland will be bound to stay with them with little chance to get access to large EU market.
      If they want to think themselves as a new Denmark or Slovakia - they have similar size of population - to do so, they will need to sever their close links with England. I don't think there is enough will to do so in Scotland.

But the UN does encourage internal self determination .... but not external self determination without consent of the parent state. People misunderstand the principal of self determination when it comes to that context... and they wrongly think it applies to all situations. There are two types of self determination... external and internal. External can only be sought with the parent states permission ... internal means some local autonomy such as devolution. The only time external can be sought independently of the parent states will is if people are suffering / dying at the hands of the parent state. Then the UN security council gets involved. I fully agree, even in the replies to this comment people have diminished wales. Wales is very much distinct from England. Welsh is the most commonly spoken of the Celtic languages, we have a rich history. Our historic figures just aren’t taught as much, and aren’t as big a part of pop culture. Owning glyndwr, the last prince of wales, fought fiercely for wales. The legend of King Arthur is a welsh one, despite what the bbc want you to think. The welsh people are the oldest inhabitants of Britain. To act like there isn’t a divide between the English and the Welsh is ignorant. The welsh independence movement is also growing exponentially. Until just over a century ago most of wales was still welsh speaking, and English tourists needed translation books to be able to visit most areas. Just because England has done better at silencing us, partly by beating children who spoke welsh until they spoke English, partly by taking all our resources without paying us for them, and many other things, that doesn’t mean we aren’t still here. ‘Yea o hyd’

    • @Fezzy976
      @Fezzy976 3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      no where near the same thing. you have 2 countries bound by a union agreement that share basically the same government. Scottish Pounds for the most part has always been legal tender. If Scotland leaves the UK it will join with the EU, something the EU has already said they would allow. Scotland would then adopt the Euro and Scotland would be just like any other EU country, they would have to exchange their money from Euro to GBP or vice versa. Also a border would not be much of a problem as there is already a clear border and no peace agreement in place like their is in Northern Ireland.
      People also thinking Scotland would be worse off? Not quite, Scotland still has A LOT of oil, and oil is still going to be very profitable and still going to be used for many years to come. Not to forget but Scotland also over produces renewable energy, something it sells to france, germany, and many other EU nations. Rejoining the EU would actually become very profitable for them.

Being a supporter of Scottish independence is not anti English: I, like I'm sure most Scots have fond relations both friendship and family in England and a fondness for its many cities, people and culture. Unionists try to label those in favour of Scottish independence as anti-English and that is so far from the truth. Like any country we want to be in charge of our own affairs but this does not preclude an affection for countries in the UK and beyond.

      Wash your ears out.
      You will not be "in charge of your own decissions or future" The SNP have already made it crystal clear this wont be the case.
      The SNP are trying to persuade by any means the majority of Scottish people to agree to swap Westminster for Brussels. The plan is that you will become one voice in 27 nations all with different cultures and languages instead of one of 4 voices speaking the same language!
      So what precisely do you think your beloved independence is set to achieve? it's certainly not independence.
      Scottish laws and Scotlands future will be decided by foreign nationals in the continent if Sturgeon persuades more people in Scotland.
      France and Germany really dont give a cobblers about another tiny region the size of Lithuania or Latvia with a pile of debt. They have huge bankrupt countries ten times your size to support like Spain, Italy and Greece which they are not paying for. So be clear in your mind about this, they really dont care for tiny Scotland and powers in Brussels have said as much many times.
      The SNP simply wants you to agree to end 400 years of history by swap it's governing partners.

The level of drugs and alcohol abuse in the region is the worst in the UK and for health Scotland is bottom in the whole of Europe. This is wholly down to the SNP administration who are not focused on the benefits of being within the UK. • @TheThundertaker
      @TheThundertaker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it won't. The EU already has major problems supporting its weaker members and Scotland has a deficit in double figures that well exceeds that 3% level required for new members. The mandatory requirment to sign up to Schengen also creates a huge issue (which is why Ireland prioritises the CTA over joining Schengen). In addition, Scotland does over 60% of its trade with the rUK and about 20% with the EU. In summary, it makes little economic sense for Scotland to leave the UK in order to join the EU, it would be an extreme act of economic self-harm. But it wouldn't happen, even if Scotland did become 'independent' the problems in joining the EU would be insurmountable and the idea would, at best be kicked down the road indefinitely. The SNP are leading disappointed remainers up the garden path by telling them that independence is the road to rejoining the EU, it just wouldn't happen, and the more the UK diverges from the EU and signs up to external trade deals that lead to lower or zero tarrif trade with the rest of the world the less sense it makes.
      In summary, Scotland is not going to be rejoining the EU, unless it is as part of the UK, which is in itself highly unlikely considering the unpalatable terms the EU would demand for that to happen.

    The City in London is not part of the UK.
    The King has to ask permission to enter The City.

    Those that promoted brexit profited from the pound falling so no wonder they 'ignored' The City.

      No country ever likes to give up territory, treasure or people. It's a loss of prestige and standing on the world stage, and it creates all sorts of administrative headaches. Actually, considering that it was a Scottish King that took over England in 1603, and not the other way around, and the fact that it has been a running joke for many years that the civil service is dominated by Scots it is arguable that that has always been the situation.
