    Very strange that they didn’t show the goal that eon the goal of the season. Harley Reid for West Coast Eagles 😮

      I am glad you posted that as I thought i was imagining things. My choices were Daicos's last goal and Merrits.

    Re distance, the big semicircle you see is 50m from the centre of the goal. That's 55 yards (3.3 feet or 1.1 yards to the metre). The Round 20 goal was about 40m out so 44 yards, and kicked with the wrong foot for that angle - the ball was actually on a worse angle than the player!

    How was Harley Reid not in this he won goal of the year 🧐

  • @off1k

    11:11 As someone else says below, that kick was about 44yards from goal line not 25yards. Also he was left side of goal kicking with his left foot which increases the difficulty.

    Ummm.., Harley Reid's Goal of the year - absent here ?!?! 🙃 ps 'Watermelon kick' lol . We call it a Torp or Torpy.. ( ie torpedo kick )

    • @off1k
      @off1k 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Pretty sure he was referring to the banana/checkside kick because of the way the ball was spinning (had a slow spin) otherwise he would of called it a spiral punt if it was a Torp.

    An old school commentator by the name of Jack Dyer, after a super-tight angle shot was nailed, said: "the angle was so tight, the ball got stuck between the posts!' Oh, and by the way, it's 99% skill, the players practise those over and over.

  • @shmick6079
    @shmick6079 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Yeah guys, I grew up in Melbourne in the 90s, and we practiced those trick shots at goal all the time.
    Back in the day my hero was Peter Daicos (Nick & Josh’s dad), and he revolutionised the game with his kicking.
    Particularly the tight angles, he perfected the dribble kick and the banana from the boundary.
    Check out Peter Daicos’ goal from 1990 vs West Coast. The kick that got the win and kept Collingwood alive in the finals.
    He also kicked an absolute beauty in the 1990 Grand Final vs Essendon.

    Week 19... OVERHEAD KICK??? I never knew that you can do overhead kicks in AFL. In soccer overhead kicks are not that rare and those are always great to see, but here in Aussie Rules... wow. I'm impressed.

      To be honest, it's not that hard to understand. Aussie Rules are quite easy to pick up. That's one of the reasons why it's so beloved by fans all over the world.

    These players practice these goal kicking from all angles, they have an uncanny sense of where to kick the ball to make it bend and run along the ground when required. They have very, very good skills. I've played this game and have watched this game since I was a young boy and I'm 70 years old now.

    • @ianmontgomery7534

      the club's "sports scientists" stop them from practicing as much as they should though.

    No luck involved, skill, but that doesn't mean they nail it every time, it's a hard shot. Analyse the shot, he glances to his left to see where the goals are, watches the ball go to boot, then looks gaolward to see if he's got it.

    • @RealFansSports
      @RealFansSports  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yeah Ofcourse the intent was to score it! Same in our explanation with a full court basketball shot. There’s intent to score it but there is still luck involved

    • @off1k
      @off1k 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@RealFansSports
      What he means is when players do the dribble kicks for goal, they generally know the ball will take a higher degree turn on the third or fourth bounce depending on the power. They drop the ball to their foot a certain way, kick the ball at a particular point and angle. Just got to get the aim right like any other normal shot for goal.
      Kinda like a Pool/Snooker player putting spin on the ball, they know the physics of it through practice. Very little luck involved if any at all.
      Obviously not all players can do these type of shots.

    • @michaelfink64
      @michaelfink64 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@RealFansSports No, it's just what they are called. I think the difference in nomenclature relates to the fact that footy was invented as a way to keep cricketers fit in winter, so quite a bit of the terminology and concepts are the same as in cricket (played on an oval shaped ground [not field], laws of the game rather than rules [even though it is called Australian rules football], boundary rather than sideline, umpires rather than referees).
