I see that others have already commented, but that cane toad is nobody's friend. Not native. Not nice. Not only poisonous, but when stressed, they can squirt a milky poison. If it goes in your eyes, it will mean a quick trip to the hospital. Potentially fatal to dogs, especially small dogs. You will often see cane toads squashed on the roads. Not always accidentally squashed.
I should have recommended that you guys to ask a local to run through the basics with you first, most Aussies would be happy (and proud) to explain the rules. The recommendation was time sensitive obviously, and I didn’t think of that in time. Hope you enjoyed the game regardless.
AFL is the oldest football code in the world. It is based on Marngrook which was played by Aboriginal people. It was originally used as a sport to keep cricket players fit during the off season.
@@ashleycorkadale1744 You had better do some research. The official history of Aussie Rules says it is based on many different games and inspired by Rugby. Aussie Rules is a combination of English 'mob-football' played at private schools and universities in England, Marngrook and Irish Gaelic football. The Irish were at the bottom of society and didn't have the means or the land area to conduct games. Games were organised by the wealthy English who had the resources so early games were based more on English 'mob-football'. Marngrook was a game played by aborigines in the western districts of Victoria where they kicked a possum skin stuffed with charcoal between two sides. The son of a wealthy western districts grazier, Tom Wills, was sent to school in England at Rugby School. He was impressed that the school had invented their own game (called Rugby and the basis of Rugby Union and Rugby League today) and when he returned to Melbourne he was inspired to invent a game for the colony of Victoria. He based the game he invented on marngrook, the game aborigines played where he lived and he had knowledge of, English mob-football and Gaelic football. The game Tom Wills invented was designed to be played on large open areas, just as marngrook was and that made it perfect for cricket ovals.
You know how to pick a quality player with your choice of Kai Lowmann (Cobra Kai), as he likes to be called hahaha. Very high-energy player, always wanting to be in the middle of the action. The Lions team itself is pretty much star-studded, no issues picking quality players out of that team. Well done boys and congrats to Chris Fagan, well deserved!!
Just to give you some perspective - AFL has the highest crowd attendance per capita of any game in the world, and is far bigger than the National Rugby League in Australia, with the Queensland and NSW teams typically having bigger memberships and crowds than the rugby teams despite them apparently being rugby states.
Nice one guys 👍 The restaurant was the place to watch with far less noise than the main bar area. No hurry in learning more, as it'll be months before another game kicks off
The field that is used for the grand final each year for AFL is the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) it has a crowd of about 100,000 at the grand final. Maybe slightly less because there weren’t any local teams in the final which is rare. The AFL started off as the VFL and most of the teams are still from parts of Melbourne or nearby parts of Victoria.
Official crowd size for the GF was 100,013. Remember, in a lot of peoples eyes, it was Fitzroy Lions vs South Melbourne Swans so there is still a following for both these sides in Melbourne.
Unsure if you guys know this or not but Soccer is a British term shortened from Associated "assocc" "socc" "socca" "soccer" Football. Then the brits turned around and declared soccer isnt the word for it anymore its "football". Love that you guys have already switched back to soccer from being here, love ya vids
Simple AFL. No offside No red/yellow cards. Very old game 1850s. Once ball is bounced any player can go anywhere. No seperation of fans you sit next to opposition supporters and woman and kids go in huge numbers so a bit different to soccer games in UK. Have fun.
AFL is basically Irish football ( GAA ) but played with a rugby ball. They don't have Red and Yellow cards. Try and go to a Lions game next year if you can, worth it for the individual player songs after they kick a goal.
If you find AFL interesting you should definitely go to a game next season and also there are some interesting videos for you to watch and learn about the rules and see some gameplay like biggest hits and best marks. Love the blogs keep up great work.
Fun Fact, both teams used to be Melbourne based. Sydney Swans used to be South Melbourne and Brisbane Lions were Fitzroy. I barracked for the Lions as Fitzroy is the suburb I live in.
Thanks for showing real interest in what my whole community and family have been devoted to our entire lives. Its an amazing sport. And I think very egalitarian. Skill and practice is very important but true grit is what will win you the game.
At the game the timer on the score board does start from zero and go up, so the players and crowd at the game don't know exactly how long to go, like soccer. Somehow they coordinate with the broadcaster, so for everyone watching at home it counts down!
A big advantage of Aussie Rules is that the higher scoring gives a better indication of how good the team is - none of soccer's NiI all draw, or 1-0 result and yet the '0' is the better team all day but the '1' got through for a lucky goal. 40 years ago I doubt you would have seen anyone in Qld get excited over Aussie Rules but our northern neighbours have now seen the light.😀😀😀
The Brisbane Lions were the Fitzroy Lions and everyone in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy was cheering for the Lions. The team went back to the old Fitzroy grounds to celebrate with the Fitzroy supporters after the win and before flying back to Brisbane. Also, the Sydney Swans were once the South Melbourne Swans and old Sth Melb supporters were cheering for the Swans. These clubs are still considered to have a base in Melbourne. It is the Adelaide and Perth clubs that are not so well liked.
Victorians hate it when any team other than the club they support is playing in the grand final.Infact most Victorians would rather see a non Victorian side beat Carlton, Collingwood or Essendon

HAHAHA ... oh dear, newbies watching the most important AFL game of the year having never seen a game and knowing nothing about it. Don't worry, this time next year you will know every detail of the game. There are some good videos on the AFL YT channel that explain the basics of the game. They are worth watching before your next game. Traditionally, Sydney and Brisbane have been Rugby League states and AFL has dominated in Victoria, Tas, SA and WA but with national comps in both sports now, it has spread across boundaries. Ironically, Melbourne Storm are into the NRL (National Rugby League) Grand Final next weekend against the Penrith Panthers. Penrith is an outer western suburb of Sydney. The NRL GF is in Sydney at the Olympic Stadium but they will be lucky to get half the crowd of the AFL GF. The AFL Grand Final is our equivalent of the English FA Cup Final or the Superbowl in the USA.
Womens AFL are on at the moment. I recommend going to see Brisbane AFLW at home in a couple of weeks and help support the womens sport. The Brisbane womens team are currently in second position so it should be a good game to watch.
AFL - best football code in Australia. Crowd over 100,000 people at the MCG better stadium than marvel. This game was codified in 1859 -. Please dont try and explain it until you actually learn the rules. They run about 15 to 20 kms a game - 18 players from each team on the field
It's fun watching you learn about our indigenous game. The Grand Final is played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), which has a capacity just over 100,000. 100,013 attended this year. There is no yellow or red card. Players cannot be sent off. However, they can be reported, in which case they might be subsequently fined or suspended for a variable number of matches, depending on the severity of the offence. Here is a video from the AFL that explains the game: th-cam.com/video/u_SqfNNfhmM/w-d-xo.html. This is the end of the men's season, but you can watch the women's league, the AFW, which is in mid season right now.
Having the AFL Grand Final at Marvel Stadium is like having the FA Cup final at Norwich or Portsmith. 😆😆 If you guys have heard of the Barassi Line; draw a straight line from SE corner of Australia (where Vic, NSW, Tasman Sea meet up) north west to the point where Qld, NT and the Gulf of Carpentaria meet up. East of the line including Sydney and Brisbane is rugby territory. West of the line including Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth is AFL territory. There may be some towns in the middle where they follow one football code but just happen to be on the other side the line.
Get an A-League team and watch football - maybe Brisbane Roar for you. Season starts 18th Oct. Standard is poor compared to EPL, but at least you will understand the rules. Juan Mata is playing for Western Sydney this season, so I'm hoping he is here to play, not have a holiday like a lot of other older players that come towards the end of their careers.
as someone else said watch Beginners Guide to Australian Football League it will give you some idea of whats going on or confirm what you may have already learnt .The AFLW is still running i think another 5 or so weeks to go .Im not sure where in QLD is the AFLW lions home ground but hopefully not too far from you it would be a good first game to go have a look at while still more or less mid season for them it has smaller crowds and not dissing the girls but the game tends to be a little slower so easier to pickup on what is happening .
So sorry the plans for watching at home didn't come off. Rest assured next season we'll get you to a game at the home of the Lions, The Gabba! Woyld have lobed to have you down home, but everything fell apart last minute.
AFL isn’t popular in Sydney either trust me! Growing up in NSW I had not even heard of AFL until I was about 18!! NSW and QLD are all about the NRL - Rugby League!! However it is Australia’s biggest sport in terms of numbers who attend. It started off in Victoria and remains a huge part of the culture of Victorians. It’s a shame Sydney lost but not many in Sydney really care compared to the NRL Grand Final or the State of Origin (NSW vs Queensland) held each year. I have definitely developed a love for AFL in recent years but most of my friends in Sydney didn’t even know the grand final was on yesterday 😂
Yeah, I caught that too. Yellow and Red cards are only in Rugby League and Rugby Union. Must have been looking at the NRL site for next week's NRL Grand Final.
@@kieransmith1796 It's confusing, AFL doesn't use cards but lower tier Aussie Rules comps do have cards. NRL doesn't have cards, hand and arm signals for sin-bin or send-off, but the UK Super League does have cards. It would be good if they standardised it all.
Last years game was better to watch Collingwood won 90 to Lions 86. As a Carlton supporter I hate Collingwood however they deserved the win and it was a great Grand Final for neutrals
Cane Toad. Watch that - poisonous to dogs Very dangerous people kill (try) them - they are an invasive species. AFL - only code I love. I’m a born and bred Queenslander but I hate (dislike) (don’t follow) QLD in the AFL / Saw live games as a kid in Brisbane when they travelled up here and my fathers team was Collingwood (the team people love to hate apparently)- sounds perfect to me Go Collingwood.
I doubt any Aussie that isn't a drop-kick would have any issues with you not knowing everything or anything about AFL; Only if you trashed it without even knowing anything about it...
I'm sure you could find, well, just about anybody who could explain things for you (unless you're in Queensland). Firstly, it's important to remember to not overthink it (Aussie Rules Football), it ain't rocket science. We're only humble colonials after all. It's almost certainly a lot simpler than you think.......
AFL unlike soccer, very nice rivalry, unlike soccer even the one in australia is full of wankers, go to an AFL game everyone chill and family friendly.
AFL beats rugby easily. Rugby is boring and seems to look like a very bad game of AFL bumping in to each others. The Grand Final had 100 thousand there and that is not the people watching on big screens at other grounds.
Which Rugby code are you talking about, Rugby Union or Rugby League. Do you even know the difference? There is a reason Rugby Union is played in 133 countries. It is also the sport of choice of many armies around the world as it develops fitness, tactics and gets soldiers used to serious body contact. Rugby is far from boring when you understand the game. I have played both Aussie Rules and Rugby Union and love both for different reasons. There aren't many Aussie Rules clubs around the world but I can walk into a Rugby Club just about anywhere on the planet and be with friends.
"Since the 1920s, it has been suggested that Australian football may have been derived from the Irish sport of Gaelic football.[20] However, there is no archival evidence in favour of a Gaelic influence, and the style of play shared between the two modern codes appeared in Australia long before the Irish game evolved in a similar direction."
@@R0d_1984 I didn't think that at all. I didn't know that no real evidence had been found, and now I know. It was something I was told decades ago and never really did any research to confirm or deny. Thanks for the information. 🙂
Something to note: big matches, big rivalry, no riots. Ever.

This is the end of the men's season, but you can watch the women's league, the AFW, which is in mid season right now.
Try and experience the AFL finals in person next time. It's a whole different experience.
Having the AFL Grand Final at Marvel Stadium is like having the FA Cup final at Norwich or Portsmith. 😆😆
If you guys have heard of the Barassi Line; draw a straight line from SE corner of Australia (where Vic, NSW, Tasman Sea meet up) north west to the point where Qld, NT and the Gulf of Carpentaria meet up. East of the line including Sydney and Brisbane is rugby territory. West of the line including Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth is AFL territory. There may be some towns in the middle where they follow one football code but just happen to be on the other side the line.
Absolutely love your channel
Watching people watching sports is not good viewing lol
Thank you ❤️
Get an A-League team and watch football - maybe Brisbane Roar for you.
Great Video Guys ! All the best from New Zealand ! :) , Plus Give Picco a Cuddle fro me !!!!!! :p
We will!❤️
You two explain or think you're explaining the rules. 😂
You got the basics so you're getting there.
So sorry the plans for watching at home didn't come off. Rest assured next season we'll get you to a game at the home of the Lions, The Gabba! Woyld have lobed to have you down home, but everything fell apart last minute.
Nobody mention the Man U vs Spurs score. 😁
Arguably the easiest game to follow in the world, pick the ball up and kick it. The rest of the rules are details.
While the game isn’t huge in NSW, it grass roots are growing fast. Sydney Swans are the biggest football team of any code in Sydney.
@@brianandrea3249 yep 👍
you need to pick an A league soccer team to follow too! that starts soon..its about a efl League 1 standard in my opinion
I think they have already chosen Brisbane Roar. Heard it mentioned in a previous video.
Can't help singing the blues City win United lose 💙💙💙
There is no yellow or red cards in AFL I don’t know what you were reading it from
Yeah, I caught that too. Yellow and Red cards are only in Rugby League and Rugby Union. Must have been looking at the NRL site for next week's NRL Grand Final.
@@RobNMelbourne yeah maybe something other than AFL rules
@@RobNMelbourne league doesn't have yellows and reds. It's either ten minutes in the sin bin or sent off.
@@kieransmith1796 It's confusing, AFL doesn't use cards but lower tier Aussie Rules comps do have cards. NRL doesn't have cards, hand and arm signals for sin-bin or send-off, but the UK Super League does have cards. It would be good if they standardised it all.
Have to ask - where are you guys from? Pretty sure the Mrs is from Yorkshire….
No worries, thanks for asking. We are both from Bolton a town that clashes between Greater Manchester and Lancashire 👍
@@EatVentureVlog wanderers fan then?
@@gamortie All the family are Wanderers apart from me and my dad (Joe), & Kody's family are all United fans too 😅
No red or yellow card in afl at the top level, most suburban league do
Last years game was better to watch Collingwood won 90 to Lions 86. As a Carlton supporter I hate Collingwood however they deserved the win and it was a great Grand Final for neutrals
The BIG question really is ........ ETH .... In or Out?
🙂👍
Don’t worry about AFL. Not all Aussies follow it. Commonly known as ‘Pansy Ball’ in some parts of the country. Cheers
Only you, idiot
AFL isn’t really a thing in NSW either.
That’s funny seeing as how the crowd sizes are 5 times what you get at NRL games
Aussie Rules football derives from Gaelic football.
I did notice a lot of cross over between the two, but didn't want to say it and get anyone annoyed watching, in case I was wrong 😅👍
Fair enough.
@@grantmcauliffe3437 Wasn't an attack, or to make myself look good.
@@R0d_1984 I didn't think that at all. I didn't know that no real evidence had been found, and now I know. It was something I was told decades ago and never really did any research to confirm or deny. Thanks for the information. 🙂
You're in Qld! You're supposed to be watching League.
When I get to the pearly gates, I hope they don't ask ANY Aussie rules questions. 💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩
🤗This game is played 💋on a Cricket Ground,💕so we get double use 💋out of our stadium,s.🫶Aussie Rules in winter ❄️ Cricket in summer.☀️💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋
