It was at Mt Panorama that the I car tv camera was invented The engineers at Australia’s channel 7 devised it. They had to have a helicopter flying directly above the car carrying the camera. There was a executi ve from one of the US networks waiting at Sydney’s airport for his flight back to the USA He saw this race starting on the tv in the passenger lounge and was so stunned by the in car pictures and the commentary during the race from the driver he cancelled his flight to the USA and got himself on a plane to Bathurst. There, he did a deal with channel 7 to licence the technology in the USA

CBS in the US developed the first in- car camera which debuted at the 1979 Daytona 500. Later the same year Channel 7 debuted their camera for the Hardie Ferodo 1000. The Channel 7 system was superior, but it would not be until 1981 that CBS licenced the technology. It is not clear where the myth started that Channel 7 was the first - 7 was the best but not the first.

@@robossuperchannel9434 I dont know where it started, but I heard this on Channel 7. However it came about, it changed motorsport for me. Suddenly I found it was a fascinating TV spectacle. The first is the Melbourne Cup for horses...which is a public holiday. The second is Bathurst 100 and the bike race is Phillip iSland GP for the bikes
Perhaps you should watch a crash compilation of the Isle of Mann TT. Its been run yearly for around 108 years and something like 260 riders have been killed.and spectators for that matter. Its only for motorcycles and outfits, held on public roads through the towns and out in the country. Its about 26 miles long. The course is lined with stone walls in the town and stone fences and barbed wire fences in the country. Bikes have been clocked at 230 mph. Average speed is 138 mph. Its NOT a race as the riders are sent out at 10 second intervals. The fastest overall time wins.

Extra notes with that first corner is this is absolutely an endurance race, at the fastest track of the season. So that first turn at Hell Corner is done on cold tyres, with a full tank of petrol, and they stretch the gear ratios out for this race to account for the higher average speeds - so working a cold clutch from a standing start is an art form in itself. It's a remarkable thing to watch.

Each car has 2 drivers and there's 2 changes during the race. The presenter is a retired racer who's been a commentator for at least 20 or more years. Mark Larkham is an expert in the field and he loves his white marker and clear board 😁 The best part of the race, that isn't mentioned, is the weather. There's been years when the sun was shinning at the bottom and terrential rain at the top. Makes the pit staff essential

There are two races at Bathurst, the Bathurst 1000, a 1000km race in October and the Bathurst 12 hour in February. The rest of the time its a normal road. The track is a bit over 6km (about 3.8 miles) long and has a vertical difference of 174m (570 feet). It's been described as the Aussie Nordschleife. Trans-Am Series champion Gar Robinson said, "If you took Virginia International Raceway and turned it into a street course and then added walls, kangaroos and Tim Tams, that’s Bathurst. The guy in the video has raced Bathurst many times and has been a commentator for the race for many years. He is the best I've heard. He can watch live footage of under the car only seeing the back wheel while it's doing a lap of the track and can tell you exactly where they are, what speed, braking, accelerating, position, what they should be doing. Every driver needs to know this track very well to make it around. They sometimes take people as passanges around the track on hotlaps. Most people go pale when they reach the top and they can't see the road anymore. International drivers come over to co-drive. It takes a few goes to be fast and finish the race. We love watching every year. The TV is on all weekend. It's by far the best race in Australia.

Bathurst started where cars had to be production cars available to the public, hence people were fanatical Ford (blue) or Holden (red) fans. And the rev-heads could buy a car that would compete at Bathurst off the production line
Each competing car was required to be a production saloon competing in standard specification as laid down in the manufacturer's standard workshop manual. Optional extras and open exhausts were not permitted. To be eligibile to compete, a car had to be an Australian built or assembled model of which 200 examples had been registered in Australia by 30 September 1967, or a fully imported model of which 100 examples had been registered in Australia by the same date

I live down the road from the track and the amazing thing is that it is a public road that anyone can drive on. But, be aware it is a two way road with a 60kpm speed limit which is police patrolled. I love driving around it and there is no way I can take some of those corners at 60kpm..

Right! 60km/hr feels way too fast on some parts 😳 It makes the race even more insane. I love it!

The Chase was added to Conrod Straight back in 1987.
I remember watching before this as a kid, cars coming down Conrod Straight at full speed then having to slow down at the last second to make a 90 degree turn into Main Straight.

Consider this too guys....back in the day Bathurst had I think 6 Divisions....from 4 cylinder rice burners,up through the 6 cylinder boys and into the V8 monsters...plus,back in the day, rack and pinion steering, drum brakes and single clutch set ups...
Around that very same track you just saw.
    It was chaos....

The Mount Panorama circuit measures 6.213km long, with Sunday's race scheduled for 161 laps - split between a main driver (who pilots the car solo for most of the year) and a ring-in co-driver, including many previous full-time racers. Fot the rest of the year the road is a Public road.

Shane Van Gisbergen who drives those cars and has been a championship winner recently won his debut NASCAR race on a street circuit. We've had many international drivers at Bathurst in years past. Not so much in that category now but there are sports car races at Bathurst.
