What I like about metal is it really is NOT racist. Look what happens when there's a heavy band that's latino, black or any other race. If they're heavy and sound good... nobody cares. Still buy the albums. With metal, it feels not racist. Example: black country singer, white rapper or an Asian bluegrass band. Would feel odd honestly but if any are metal bands... it can fit.

To be honest, I actually found the metal community to be the most welcoming community. No one really cares where you're from, we just come and share our love for the music. Sure, there are racists as well such as Phil and Varg, but they're in a minority, and let's face it, what group doesn't have its own racists? Some people are assholes, it's just a part of life.

Unfortunately, racism will always exist. You will find racist people no matter where you go. Judging people because of the music that they listen to isn't really "right" for lack of a better word. People are allowed to voice their opinions, and we live in a day and age where you can't actually say anything without somebody getting offended. Some statements will offend more people, but that doesn't mean you're not allowed to say what's on your mind.

The so called ' ELITES ' want us to kill eachother , and it works because most people are ignorant FOOLS !...Conspiracy means ' to breathe together ' , Respire-inspire-conspire...boo-hoo.

    In my personal opinion:
you nailed it on the head. The genre it's not racist. There are racists and racist subject in the genre, but not the genre as a whole. Metal is the musical outlet for countless "races" (I use quotations because I'm not a fan of the use of the term. Last time I checked, we're all members of the human RACE, it doesn't scientifically divide us on color), ethnicities and belief systems the world wide.

Metal is no more racist than any other industry. Individuals are racist, metal is not. Slayer, Sepultura, GOD FORBID, Deftones, RATM,- there's lots of prominent metal bands with members of an ethnic background. Just because the majority of heavy metal bands comprise of caucasions from the West & Northern Europe doesn't make metal an issue of racism. Metal is a platform for anyone to engage & enjoy. Metal as a racist genre of music is an utterly ridiculous notion. Racism is just another point of attack for people who don't like metal. It's the same irrational ignorance that tries to paint Rammstein as a band of Nazis.

Cheer up and enjoy the present. Populism and nationalism is the new trend. Therefore hit the bar like there is no tomorrow. Alcohol is what keeps history teachers alive to tell you all about how an economic crisis caused civil unrest, unemployment, poverty, low or stagnant growth, low inflation or even deflation which led to populist demagogoues seizing power, slaughtering the minorities alongside with the intellectuals (cause they're often viewed as elitist) and the ruling elite to dismantle our cherished democratic institutions and finally wage a new world war and blow up the world.

Thank you for this. I'm a 38 year old metalhead who happens to be "African American" or Black. I'm also a HUGE PanterA fan. Throughout my childhood growing up on the East side of San Antonio, TX which was a Black community I was the constant sore thumb everywhere I went. My answer is "No. Metal is NOT racist." In fact I feel more at ease in a metal crowd/concert than anywhere else and I suffer from anxiety. I recall NUMBEROUS times being picked on by other Black students and adults for the styles of music I like and the way I dress(ed). I can only recall less than a handful of times it coming from White people. Now don't get me wrong I'm proud of my heritage and ethnicity. I'm nobody's Uncle Tom but I also agree that no one should not be proud of who and what they are. I've seen PanterA at least 5 times in my day and those were some of thee most welcoming shows I've attended. But as a fan I KNOW what a band is about when I go. PanterA is a proud Southern band. With that comes some terrirorial views to say the least from their audience. We all alreasy know Phil has been and probably still will be a dick at times. If fat Phil stumbling around drunk is the definition of White power then people who want that can have fun with it. I'll be in the front seat of the bus reading a Chuck D interview. 😃 Again, Thank you for this. I've subscibed and will be continuing to watch your videos. Feel free to check out mine. 🤘

I'm a black man and I loved metal since I was 13 am now 28. I got myself a guitar, albums and dove head first into it and I've never looked back. At least for me personally I have experienced nothing but love and support from the metal community. Gone to quite a bit of shows and the looks I get when I actually know my shit is heartwarming, and recently having a battle vest I get so many looks and good feedback. The metal community is something that the uneducated like to shit on but if they were part of it will realize it's accepting of all races, gender, look etc as long as you're there for the same goal to enjoy the hell out of the band people will embrace that. I am not the most social guy but at a metal concert I don't know what comes over me but I open up, I'm engaging in conversation I'm like a whole different person and that's the beauty of metal! \m/

  • @guitaropathe
    @guitaropathe 8 ปีที่แล้ว +76

    Hi from France,
As a black guy and a metalhead I can say heavy metal is not inherently racist at all. I admit when I stated to go to metal concert (was alone) I was a little intimated by the fact I was in minority (well only colored guy sometimes) especially in black metal concerts. But I though fuck off that's the music I love. I've thinking about this stereotype that metal is for white for long time and found the story of a black woman, now in a heavy metal band, that suffered of beeing rejected in metal community in the 80's. She went on concerts see metallica and bands like that and heard ape screams etc. But this is not about metal, that occured in the US, and in this country manifestation of racism had always been, and still are, quite violent. I'm pretty sure that it would'nt happened in France in the 80's for exemple, where manifestation of racism is quite different, and where racists are not the same kind of people. Mostly, french racists were/are bourgeois, retired army guies (that "hunting, tradition and religion" way of thinking, which is not heavy metal at all) and boneheads. So here's the point it's a sociological problem. And: personnaly I think the true metalhead, I mean when it's your passion, you're found of it to know that heavy metal has blues roots so it's not a "pure race music". I never met racist metalhead. I met metalheads that authorized themselves any jokes (having limits is not metal!) (like the slayer guy) but I can enjoy that music without being worried at all. In fact they don't give a fuck my skin color, I met great guies had nice conversations with unknown, a girl even tried to date me at Abbath/Behemoth concert recently! We metalheads are not perfect but racism is not n°1 default at all.
Nevertheless, I have an explanation for the fact that there is so few arabian or black guy in metal (I don't talk about asian, there are plenty of xD). The problem comes from the stereotype, and some kind of subconscient racism from non-white communities, that consider that if you're into something considered as "white culture" that means you denies "your" culture. That means you're not "proud" or you would like to be white. But the sad truth is, those guies that don't to get into "white things" don't because they have a problem with being non-white. There was colonialism and slavery in France, and there still is this kind of "post traumatic complex" that bound minds with none sense issues.
I think being proud of your "blood culture" is kinda absurd. I think pride is for something you accomplished and you're proud because you feel greater than before, like a song you wrote or a problem YOU solved.
Why being proud for something you didn't even fucking chose, like your skin colour, or you elders culture? We human being are so much more than that.

I know this is such an old comment but I’m glad someone mentioned that about liking “white things” from other black people. Ugh, as a mixed girl (black/Hispanic) it’s such a struggle to feel constantly judged by people because I dress a certain way or like things they consider “white things”, it’s so frustrating and honestly does keep from wanting to do certain things. I’ve definitely felt a bit uncertain about going to metal shows because I have never been and honestly have only heard a few songs but after reading your comment maybe I’ll take a chance and go to one.

And I live in San Francisco, which is one of the most diverse places in North America. Unfortunately it happens everywhere, dude. I'm not saying it's metal or the metal community that's racist, I'm saying (like he said in the video) there are some people who are racist and who listen to metal, and I've just experience it more in-your-face than some people.

Ok, my bad for assuming you were male. Coming to a compromise doesn't change the fact that you whitesplained the fuck out of it, which is invalidating and ignorant. I was civil about it and appreciative of what you said at the end of the conversation, but that doesn't cancel out the fact that you thought you thought it was ok to tell me what MY experience was like. I'm not being a bitch by comiserating with another person who had the same experience as I did, but if that's all you can say because I didn't pretend how you acted at first was ok, that's on you. You're showing tremendous imaturity and I don't really have time or inclination to argue with someone who thinks acting like a 5 year is ok. Have a good one.

I disagree on some points. While I don't think Metal is inherently racist, I think it's more prevalent and accepted than other genres. I mean we have a whole semi-widely known (within metal) subgenre that has racism as a core addition: NSBM. Even without NSBM, Black Metal is racist occasionally and even if it isn't, you can be almost 90% sure its members are racist or discriminatory against religious groups as people. As an Arab Muslim fan of extreme forms of Black Metal, it's hard to find bands that wouldn't want to kill me.

with black roots of all rockmusic you´r right. but i do have to partly disagree about Techno, i only do say the word "kraftwerk" founded in the 60´s, though to be fair they just began to play electronic music in the 70´s (fun fact: they where sampled very much in 1980 hip hop and house music you may thought of as the root of techno). you even can go beack 20 years more, and call the late 1950´s french musical movement "musique concrete" as the original root of all original electronic music.

really bad example, because all the original members of black sabbath where blues or even jazz musicians (the drummer). and if you had asked them back then the all would say they play a rough darker form of blues, metal wasn´t invented back then.

I am a Puerto Rican that CAN pass as a canarian islander, which is where the bulk of my ancestry comes from. I went with my Puerto Rican friend to a Protest the Hero and Between the Buried and Me concert in Amsterdam for my bachelor's party. It was our first leg of the trip, we were then supposed to meet the rest of the crew in Spain, my wife's country. My friend looks uber Middle Eastern, almost Saudi like, yet he is a Puerto Rican of Sephardic Jewish heritage. I really felt uncomfortable a few times because some people did stare at us and looked surprised to see us there. I never experienced this in Latin America or even in Spain (even though in Spain, once they knew we were from Puerto Rico, they would say something along the lines of "you listen to Metal over there? i thought It was all about Salsa and Reggaeton", which is ironic because our parents were listening to progressive rock by the end of the 60's while they lived under a dictatorship). Anyways, I do think that there MIGHT be a problem in the global northern community, but I am also aware that there is a possibility that I am reacting to conducts which are not necessarily racists, but more like awkward experiences as a result of a historic lack of diversity in the community. I am sure there is a lot of racism, but I could not affirm it is a general condition of the community. I think white people (and I do know that it is a very vague concept) must have a dialogue with their peers in the community about the social problems this could entail.
I respect freedom of speech as the lawyer I am, but Hate Speech should not be condoned. There is a great difference regarding that between the US and most of Europe (maybe because of the Nazi experience). In the US hate speech is allowed as long as it does not lead to immediate and unequivocal acts of physical violence, but that is not the case in Europe. Even in Spain, which seems to be really lay back with the use of the Fascist salute and people do not get arrested for doing it, like in Germany (people still do it here, specially heirs of the Pro Franco regime), at the constitutional law level, Hate Speech is not allowed. I think that there should not be thought crimes, but you should be held responsible for what you say when you open your mouth to express hate speech which might have an impact on how others later commit violence against people of a different racial, ethnic or cultural background for no reason at all, however causally distant it may be. I am not saying that people who practice Hate Speech should get arrested, but they should certainly receive some sort of social sanction by the community (rejection, scorn, etc). Just my two cents. We all want to enjoy metal and feel safe.

I played a show with Super Joint Ritual a long time ago, Phil was saluting Hitler and dropping n-bombs like it was nothing. Total let down to see a hero act like that. But if you listen to younger Phil in songs like 13 Steps and Five Minutes he seems to talk down about racism. Like the opposite of Malcom X who was racist in his young days but against racism in his older days. The second time I Super Joint came through I would have skipped seeing them but Devildriver was playing with them so I went anyway, Phil was so high it literally took four guys to help him stand up the entire show and someone to hold the mic form just for him to murmur into it, pathetic, people pay good money to see him and that's how he repays fans. Regardless, when he sober and playing in the band Down I never hear of any of this behavior. Anyway, it's bullshit to hate anyone for something they can't help, like skin color or taste of music.

I can confirm that the metal community is very welcoming. I am not black racially speaking (my dad is white and my mother is Amerindian) However I do have quite dark skin, mostly because I am really burnt most of the time. In my school which is predominantly Hispanic, there is a white guy, really white (he's Norwegian) and he was so friendly to me when I shared the same passion for music. he didn't like Hispanic immigrants since I live in LA and most of them are not very bright individuals but he didn't have a problem with race at all. actually he defended me a couple of times in class which I really appreciated. even my "own" Hispanic peers have racial prejudice, I for example am called "negro" as a "affectionate" way but deep down it has connotation for me being slightly different than them.

With freedom of speech comes the responsibility for what you said. You can say whatever you want, but from the moment you said it you have to be open to the fact that someone may call you out on it. It's quite common for people who use the freedom of speech argument to become angry when someone says something about it, as if freedom of speech shields you from criticism. Not necessarily talking about the Pantera incident, but we should also not confuse freedom of speech with hate speech...

I have never really experienced Racism in the metal scene. I have seen people at shows that are more than likely Racist. As an African American male who works engineering music I can say that I have seen more racism at hiphop shows than metal especially when Caucasian or Latino spectators arrive to a venue in a predominantly black area. That being said Racist fucks are everywhere I've had my own moments. It will probably be another century before it Peters out the more people embrace the fact that we are all really mutts and no one is pure anything. Early man was a horndog and just got in where he could fit in. So a lot of us have trace amounts of races we wouldn't even dream of in our DNA. But as I said even with this knowledge I sometimes have slip ups. I would say it isn't prevalent in Metal more like Metal has that stigma because people automatically associate groups of tattooed, pierced and combat booted Caucasians with Racists. Skin heads etc.

Me personally, it wasn't so much the actions of Anselmo that annoyed me, but more the people who defended him simply because they hero worship Pantera. They wouldn't have done that if Pantera wasn't as big as they are. I do greatly appreciate that he apologized for it, but it doesn't make it any more acceptable to do that. And when people say "Oh, why were you offended by this? Of all people, blah blah", that itself offends me more than someone who actually IS a white supremacist
I also heavily defend freedom of speech and yes, you can say whatever you like, but just because you CAN say it, doesn't necessarily mean that you SHOULD

First of all: Heavy Metal is the offspring of Rock Music, while Rock is the offspring of Blues, so the roots of Heavy Metal are pretty black. Second: Heavy metal is international. It exists on every continent. There are even Metal bands in the Middle East and in Africa. Of course there are many racist metal fans, but they're just ignorant and I think they ruin the scene -- just like any assholes in a group of people. If you think of different subgenres of Metal, the fanbase kinda differs: while in the Black Metal scene there are a lot of racists and even right out Nazis, the Thrash Metal scene is pretty much Left-wing and Liberal. So many Metal bands have made anti-racist statements and many have written anti-racist songs (Iron Maiden, Kreator, Sepultura, Napalm Death, Machine Head, Gorefest, Arch Enemy, Amorphis, Moonsorrow -- just to name a few) while racist bands are somewhat in marginal (NSBM and some other Black Metal bands). And what about all the multicultural/multiracial metal bands? Slayer, Suffocation, Sepultura, Dream Theater, Death Angel -- the list goes on... And then there is even the band called Noxa from Indonesia which has one very unique character: all members are from a different religion. Drummer Oxen is a Christian, guitarist Ade is a Muslim, bassist Dipa is a Hindu, and vocalist Tony is a Buddhist. How about diversity here? :D

ANTIFAxFINLAND Rock is a fusion of blues and country music. Country music. Blues was heavily influenced by European folk music. So no it's not exclusively black.

Rock & Roll's chief influence is African ( through African music& rhythms/ Voo Doo)

Hello Blackmetal Werewolf. I enjoy watching your videos and the highlight for in this video was when you were talking about freedom of speech. For some reason people think that metalheads blindly follow every single word that the bands say in their songs which I totally disagree with. For me metal is a way of experiencing certain emotions or get in to certain mindsets that some of us can never get into. Once you hear it, it's up to us to follow it or forget about it.
P.S. I really like to hear your opinions on progressive rock and progressive metal bands(opeth and porcupine tree for some examples). Cheers.

I'm glad you like my channel! For a beginner metalhead I would suggest starting with a lot of the very early metal bands like Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon ect. You'll probably love those bands and then gain a thirst for other types of metal and grow from there. Let me know how you like those bands!

LIked your video, but as a South American, I'd like to add that you do see people of all ethnicities in metal, even here, it is still more prevalent around whites than anything else, although I was in Bolivia once where most of the population is non-white (I'm from Uruguay, 90% of the population is white of european descent) and there's a sizable metal scene there, many national and local bands, they just don't get as many international shows, so many cross to Argentina which is the country the probably gets the most metal shows in all of Southern south america at least.

Exactly, I'm from Paraguay, and we use to organize tours to go to Argentina, I traveled to attend Judas Priest, Motorhead and Ozzy at Monsters of rock.. however many metal bands came here in Paraguay already, from Metallica, Megadeth, Grim Reaper to Gorgoroth, Belphegor and Mayhem and the list keeps going,

Dude this video is pretty good. I think you hit a lot of good points and I'm definitely subscribed. I'm just wondering if you've ever thought of having panels on your channel. You seem like a thoughtful guy who has a lot of questions, so maybe if you had a panel of other metalheads from different walks of life send in clips that answer some of your questions or questions you get asked I think that'd be cool. Also, it could be good for generating more discussion in the comments. Not that hearing your opinion is bad, it would just be intereating to hear from some of your friends too. Just an idea.

Nowdays I really love thrash, death, black, Prog, whatever, so, Metal is something for everyone.

Think you hit the nail on the head. Every metal show that I've been to, I've met dozens of amazing people. I've found that in the community it's just about the common love for the music, nobody, in my experience, has ever viewed it as a color thing. TH-cam comment section aside, any semblance of racism is really in the individual themselves, not the music.

The band Orphaned Land, a band from Israel, is a great example that heavy metal is not racist. That's a band that tours with bands from other cultures; often bands that come from countires that are seen as enemies. Their message is that we're all people united by the music no matter where we're from.
Check out the CD Oriental Metal with several oriental metal bands, great project and great music.

I got into metal at around 8 and I’m 26 now...from what I’ve experienced first hand from being in bands, jamming out, going to shows, parties or whatever, There have been people of all colors there and they were always the most inclusive groups ive been around. Metal heads just wanna jam out and have a good time. It’s like an unofficial club of sorts. Every time I meet a new metal head even in the street it usually starts with a compliment from one party to another followed by a conversation about music and the person is typically always friendly. Ive definitely met some asshats in pits but no one likes those guys anyway lol

Hello mate, i salute you from Romania!
As a religious person, i don't really like listening to metal that promotes satanism e.g slayer and like all of the black metal bands :D. I really like slayer because of dave lombardo and tom araya because they are some really nice guys from what i have seen in their interviews. but based on kerry andu hanneman(rip), i really don't like them. i know they are not satanist or anything, but trying to be badass as you are writing devil based lyrics is just lame. as you are a black metal fan, can you tell me what is your opinion on the satanistical presence in the lyrics of black metal bands or metal in general?
I am not a total metal fan or a metalhead because i also listen to rap music and some softer metal music that is rock. when it comes to metal i am listening to sabbath, osbourne, maiden, the big 4 thrash metal gods, linkin park, nightwish. As you can see, i am not into the brutal side of metal as it does not appeal to me. All that being said, what is your opinion on them load/reload/st.anger albums of metallica? do you hate them because they are not metal and they selled out and all these kind of stuff or can you find all the good stuff in all their music?
P.S i can hardly wait for the upcoming metallica record and i already bought tickets for the megadeth concert in bucharest on the 13 th on july so i'm PUMPED

I'll be doing a video about the whole Satanism thing in metal in the near future so you'll be able to get my opinions on that when I make the video. As for those Metallica albums they certainly aren't my favourites but they do have a few high points in them. I hate using the term "selling out" because I feel like it's a meaningless insult people use to describe something they don't like.

Also, i really don't know how i found you, it just came on my recommended panel in youtube saying something like speed metal related, i guess it was a lucky recommendation, because i subscribed :D. Also do you think that Ulrich deserves the shit he gets for being not a technical drummer but a simplistic one that suits his band well? Do you agree with piracy in music?

    • @blackmetalwerewolf9436
      @blackmetalwerewolf9436  8 ปีที่แล้ว

+Dorian Costin I don't think he deserves nearly as much hate as he gets. There are a lot of drummers who are much worse than he is lol. As for piracy I don't agree with it. I wouldn't want to work for free so why should musicians? I understand some people can't afford a lot of albums and some countries have really high prices but I'm still not comfortable with it

Satanic subjects are popular amongst metal bands. If you don't like it then don't listen to it. You can't sing about puppies and flowers to the music that is being played and on top of that metal is all about realism. Not every metal head has a positive outlook on life and it's an art of it's own kind.

Listen dude, fuck that I'm black I've always been a metal head since I was young, my parents thought that metal was racist and the crowds wouldnt like me there (Mind you this is 2008 dude) Anyone who's been around for a minute knows that metal is one of the most DIVERSE cultures ever, like rap music and all that shit is so isolated with the crowd and who goes to shows that it does seem segregated but no one is brave enough to say it.
Rap music is racist as fuck.

I don't know how to word this properly but... When I think of racism I think more than just white, black, Hispanic, etc. I think of German, Norwegian, French, etc. like I think racism is a lot deeper than just white or black, there Norwegians and Sweds who don't like each other and whatnot... I don't wanna get too much into detail but I think there's more behind "white"

  • @kzonedd7718
    @kzonedd7718 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It is inherently a racist act to defend a racist. This is not to say you can't believe in his right to be racist. It's just that you don't have to amplify their stupidity or rush to their defense. And you don't, ever, support them with your money by buying tickets or CD's. We've looked away from Pantera's (yes, the entire band, including Dimebag) overt racism too long already. But, to stick to the free speech argument: you have a right to express your ideas. But you're not entitled to an audience, or to be treated like you're a nice guy when you're objectively shitty. Consequences are the flip side of the liberty medal. If I go to a metal concert and get on stage to tell the crowd that all metalheads should be put in prison... I'm not going to be popular with that crowd. Being asked to leave is then not an attack on my freedom of speech, it's the consequence of me being a dick in a private venue that no longer wants me there.

    • @kzonedd7718

Also: if your generation has less of an issue there, I'm happy. But I went to gigs in the eighties. People very much did try to block black people from metal. Not the bands, mostly, or even most of the fans, but in general no one kicked the racists out either.

I've felt like the metal community is more accepting. I have made friends with metalheads that are white and they never say "you are Mexican, you can't listen to metal", all they say is "what are your favorite bands". As long as you share the same love for metal, metalheads won't discriminate against you.
