  • Sometimes things just happen and you’ll need to diagnose and repair a problem on your RC rig. For some this can be a scary task, especially if you are new and bought an RTR. You didn’t build it, you’re new to RC; how do you fix it! Never fear John is here to help you diagnose and fix transmission related problems in your RC truck. John is having problems with one of his rigs and shows you how to figure out where the problem is on his Axial Wraith 1.9 and then tears the truck down to show you how to fix it.

I write this in hope that you shall enjoy it: I had this precise, exact problem, and I have never taken a transmission apart. I drove too long a screw in my Axial Capra 1/10 transmission (probably swapped a short for a long one...) and this video was a godsend. Funny I say that because, we also know that the gods of RC did not want me to see that, but you also mentioned they like to be cussed at so now they are proud of the both of us, because you did the video and I followed on your steps of user error, cuss and fix procedure. Thank you so much for this... I had no idea why my Capra would 1) not climb 2) be all stiff and jerky and 3) chew through LiPos like crazy (and warm them up nice and crispy). I thought it was the motor, but it was fine, I kept disassembling until I found a stiff gear that was always stiff at a specific turn.. Took the grease out and there it is, I drilled too far a screw in. Cleaned it with a knife, etc. etc. I mean I don't have to explain it to you, you made the video! Thank you, John!

Honestly, you're using Black & Decker if you love Dbrand neweWalt & their new cordless line won't last if use them daily...well, the batteries won't more correctly. In my Shop I'm moving away from DeWalt cordless tools & have gone with Ryobi, they have a lifetime warranty & are affordable, when one craps out I return it on warranty & get a new one, but never had anything crap out yet honestly.
As for the Axial trans cases, I find sometimes their quality control leaves a lot to be desired, have had to take apart tranny's that have never been run before because it was assembled like crap.
You know what they say "so many cats & so few good recipes"...canya'll tell I love my dog?
As always a wicked video, heaps of fun & informative too.

The first gen dewalt lithiums were a joke, especially with the brushed motors. 10 three inch screws and done. These new ones aren't too bad, but there's no way the 2 or 2.5ah packs can handle construction. The 18v nicads are still better. My brushless impact and drill does well with the 5ah lithium packs though, I've built a few walls and they get through 100+ screws without fading. I think it would do fine on a job site, but would absolutely need the 5ah packs to prevent sagging and early LVC.

My Axial builder's kit plastic spur gear has so much run-out that if I adjust to the "tight" side the opposite side is almost out of mesh. I have emailed Axial multiple times with no response. I really think these big crawling companies have gotten complacent about development and quality control. And too used to charging an arm and a leg for little injection molded plastic parts that cost them fractions of pennies to make. Also: Three boobed aliens for the win!

#200milewraith19 (181.7 total miles) took almost 50 miles to get that forward/reverse hitch in the ar44s which was about the same with several other ar44 equipped rigs, especially the one piece axle versions. Haven’t cracked the axles and only cracked the trans to confirm metal gears and noticed plenty of that ugly cosmoline smelling goo. Recently picked up this same hitch and hope it can make that final 20 pushing the rig with a HH 21t Trailmaster.

But I think everyone uses plastic now. For RC work I love the 12v dewalt pistol drill, it's lightweight and on clutch setting one in second gear I have yet to strip anything. And when not running the transmission locks so you can use it as a hand driver for that last little bit.

For electric tools I’ve got Makita for my wood/ household tools (drills saws etc) Milwaukee for my Automotive tools (impact drivers screw drivers ratchets etc) only Dewalt tool I own is one of those gyroscopic screwdriver‘s I use mostly on my RC stuff I love that thing.
Btw all cats are A$$Holes 🤣🤣🤣👍🏽

12v Milwaukee 18v Makita. Future wife had a dog and I had a cat. Father in law to be informed me they were a package deal. We've had multiples of both ever since (43y).

I'm a coward... I'm too worried to use a power driver when screwing into plastic. I've always been a big fan of Makita though... :)

I use a bosch drill driver, it has super low startup speed and control, with a sensitive torque limiter.

I've been thinking about making some carbon handles for my daily carries. The weight of a full stainless or stainless/ alloy has been chafing my leg lately. Post leg surgery did something to my skin and made it more irritable.

No doubt! I have a hard time carrying my expensive knives daily. Although I've never lost a knife either, still have my first buck from when I was 10.

Ugh, first mistake... Over tightening screws into a plastic transmission case and then having the entire transmission case shake loose while crawling, killing the drive shaft, the transmission case, and requiring a total rebuild... at Axialfest. :/ Not my happiest moment! :)
