no one carries lead solder at the normal places youd go to buy it its honestly pretty hard to find, in canada anyway. Just run a home fan pointed towards a window and the back at your piece that your working on if your concerned about fumes but honestly the air we breath in major cities is probably alot worse for your health

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I picked up a Hako a couple of years ago and have never looked back. For years I thought I was terrible at soldering...turns out I just had the wrong equipment. Great idea on the steel bullet jig. I will have to Fab one up for future jobs.

I'm glad to see a pro sometimes gets solder in the wrong place. I get frustrated when I do that.
Sometimes soldering goes very easily for me and it's fun and even a little relaxing. Other times it's an exercise in frustration from beginning to end. I started off with a 60W HobbiCo pen iron and now I'm using a Protek TK955 station and it did make the job easier. Larger wires can still be extremely frustrating.

Bake the motor! I like that haha just like installing huge bearings!
They make lead wipes and lead wash for cleaning your hands after working with lead, highly recommended if you do a lot of it.

I would love to see a video on soldering the XL motor or a 1/8th scale motor. I have managed to desolder a reds v8 with 10 gauge wire with my 60w iron, but I can need get a good connection when soldering motor wires on, maybe I just need a bigger more powerful iron.

Just from my experience is more easy in use an alligator clips to hold connectors (less mass to heat-up).

So I'm building a trx4 I got the unassembled kit.i bought all the electronics.i watched this whole video then I noticed the symbol at the end ove the video and noticed my motor I bought at the hobby shop was the same as this video.im just curious did you guys make my motor

Tip on the lighter, use the blue part in the flame 🔥 and it will look clean, the tip or yellow part of the flame 🔥 will create black spots 🤓

What was the crawler world like when it first started?
This is my next step in setting up my upgrade on me TRX 4 Tactical Unit. Holmes Revolver and Castle Mamba x ...one problem I run into is getting the XT60 connectors to soldier correctly what heat range would apply to the XT60 connector?
Everybody's irons are different usually I would just start at the lower end setting if it's not heating up and pulling up the solder turning it up a little bit and just keep doing that until it heats it up to the proper temperature to be able to solder the size wire you're trying to connect.
Thank you for pointing out the perils of acid flux in stranded wire. I have been using acid flux. I guess I wont now :)
Your soldering iron is nicely tinned. Any advice on how to prepare a new soldering iron?
If a tip is not tin plated from the factory (most are these days), warming up the iron slowly and applying NON flux core solder continuously to the tip until it "wets" it out is the easier way. There is a very narrow window of temperature to get a non tinned tip tinned before it starts to oxidize, if this window is missed the tip must be cleaned with acid or mechanical methods and the process starts again. The problem with pushing flux core solder onto the tip is that flux core solder will actually eat away at the tin plating over time, so this is one reason to NOT apply solder directly to the tip.
I should also add that a non tinned tip may need acid flux put on it before the tinning process, and let it do it's job as the iron warms. Being quick about hitting the tip with tin before it gets too hot is the key, the window between ready to tin and burned is so small. Sometimes, acid flux is the only thing that will get the tip ready to accept tin. Once tinned, cool down and wash off the tip well so the acid does not continue to eat into the tip.
I've been thinking to get a soldering iron today.. Wanting to modify my wireless headset with a new battery and then i stumbled your video about soldering, I checked but the hakko fx888 is listed at 20k jpy here which is something i can't spend money into right now but wanting to give soldering a try... I however saw a much cheaper one at 5k jpy w/c is maybe similar? called TOAUTO soldering iron set... Or getting a hakko fx888 or similar still recommended?
For just getting started the low cost should be fine!
Sorry to pester you, but im still stuck at thinking what to buy, i saw a much cheaper ones but without a dial, i would want to ask if what's the "heat output" does the soldering iron i need for soldering wires on a 18650 battery? the thing i want to actually make is modify my headset with a 18650 battery since it doesn't charge via usb anymore, so i wanted to like swap batteries externally instead... if a cheap soldering iron would do the trick, i'd buy one now...

Lead solder ftw. It's miles better. It's not good if you have to use it for your job because of the health risk, but if you just solder once a month or a couple of times a year its just better in every way.
It is easier to work, for sure. But I'm not going to expose myself to it daily, and technically it's illegal to export items into most countries with lead solder.
@@HolmesHobbies yes I agree. If you are using it on a daily basis its a bad idea to use lead. In the UK I think it's completely illegal to sell lead solder at all now as well as products with it in. Luckily I have a massive roller which should last a very long time.
The other advantage of leaded solder is you don't have to use as much if any flux and I would say without extraction, the fumes from the flux could be worse in the long term than lead solder. Obviously having good extraction massively reduces the risks, so most people will be OK as long as they use extraction. 👍
You have use de-lead soap to clean lead off your hands.
Heat 450°. Dam dude, I crank up my Trak Star to 700°...I'll dial her back a bit..
450 celcius. Anything above that will ruin the tips quickly and overheat the solder, leading to oxidized joints. If your iron doesn't have enough thermal mass for the job, turning it up can be the only way to get the job done. Just do the work quick and don't let the iron sit at that temperature, or else you risk oxidizing and ruining the tin on the tip.

Good Tutorial John!! I'm still using part Lead Solder.... I may rethink that! I've been Soldering since the late 70's...... But that doesn't mean I don't have things to LEARN. Anyone who thinks they know everything - DOESN'T!!! 😛😫
John, I was discussing my problematic BR-XL ESC in a previous Video... Cutting in and out frequently.
You suggested replacing my Dean's Plugs with XT60s. I did that, and have been seeing a little better performance out of all 3 of my Rigs.
My BR-XL is still doing the same thing. 😮😔 What have I done??
I'm out of options. I can't even afford to send it to you to look at.

You are the o ly one I might have a chance with as far as a trade I have to offer I need a 540can brushless system and esc for my scx10 3axial I just ordered I just got out of the hospital because of partially losing my right foot I have a trx4 sport kit built really tuck and I have a set of new traxxs for the trx4 I am willing to let go for the motor and esc system pleas tell me yes no or even hell no I just need a motor and you are getting so much more thankyou please say you will healp me

Yeah, I learned to gas, arc and Tig weld before I learned to solder..ruined some very expensive Electronics along the way. 2 totally different worlds..
Totally different, but very similar in that it's more about practice than it is about a natural talent.
haha shoulda soldered first then brazzing and then anything welding is a piece of cake!

Rarely are you soldering new stuff. The difference between a amateur n professional solderererer? Flux. When your not using new components use flux

Great practice being AWARE of lead, children absorb lead at a quicker rate than adults. Lead is also MORE damaging to children than adults..

I have got to ask you one more time I'm not even sure you even read these but I have to as I lost my right foot shot off with a 45 auto I have a trx4 rc truck kit complete and built very tuff it also has beadlockorabd wheels on it and a holms hobby 550 can and a 1080 esc with a set of new traxxs for the trx4 for snow and mud will you please trade me for a brushless system and esc 540can please I need these so I can run my new truck I will trade you all of that for just the motor esc and brushless system please pics on request of all people I trust you and I'm not sure y but please trade me you are getting more than you mo ey worth
