    Sinking a lot of time into your work and feeling stuck? It is true that it takes time to cultivate expertise. However, not all time is time well spent. The good news is that there is a method, some might say a science, to effective practice. So let me wrap up 30 odd years of sports psychology to help you get where you want to be.

    4:05 The science of learning
    9:35 Putting it into practice

    This is something that I've read about and learned before, esp when I started learning music theory and flute as an adult, but it was reassuring to hear it again. I've been extremely frustrated by a plateau I've hit with my language learning lately--that late intermediate/early advanced learner's curse. Thanks much!

      I'm glad it was helpful. I recently picked up trombone again as an adult and have been dealing with my struggles with language learning so all of that sounds very relatable right now.

    Hey, I don't know if you're still reading comments a whole year after the video came out, but I just wanted to say I really identified with that last section, and it meant something to me. As someone trying to learn a language, but who really dislikes the idea of putting himself out there, out of some fear to be seen genuinely attempting to do something and possibly fail at it, I'm often very critical of my methods and choices. I could be doing better, I could always be using my time better, doing things more efficiently. I just kinda stumbled onto this video by coincidence, because I was binging your content on the background (and was called out for it mid video, had to put down the switch so I could focus hahahaha), and the irony is not lost on me that this is exactly a resource so improve efficiency in learning, but your thoughts on self-compassion, how just trying is a brave thing on it's own, and how even if it takes longer than I may want, I will get where I want to be, well, it made me tear up a bit. Thank you for your kind words, truly. And, of course, all this premium knowledge you're just handing out! I'll be eagerly awaiting any new videos :)

      @RickiHirsch  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yep, I do still read the comments! I'm glad all of that could be helpful. I've been trying to learn a language lately too and, despite having made several videos about it, stumbling into some of the same thoughts. This was actually a nice reminder to take some of my own advice so thank you for that. We're both gonna make it.

    Your video is really helpful and my friends have told me such advice time and time again lol. I really like to do it like in fighting game but a lot of times I just immediately forgot why or how do I even do something, rather frustrating. But none the less your video is very helpful.

    The part about looking back at recordings of your past matches/runs is so true.
    I've done some speedrunning, and it really helps to review what you did in order to find faults or potential optimizations. There's just no way to see it in the heat of the actual execution.

    I haven't really watched any of your other videos besides this one and the Bridget one, but I really like your presentational style and just the general vibes you give off if that makes sense.
    I think it would be really cool if you made more videos like this, especially given how you're an expert on the subject.
    Also your voice is sooooo relaxing and soothing.

    Great video!
    Edit - not only was this educational for me, but personally with videos about improving and mental fortitude in doing so I will watch any video I see even if I've seen the specific approach dozens of times. I have a notebook where I journal about fighting games every single day and TH-cam videos are a big portion of that, but that's just why I started doing it. I continue to do so because even in the rare case where I don't get any new information, I get the info re emphasized in my thoughts. I've finally gotten to where I have a practice regimen planned for sf6 and I actually think of these things when I'm playing/afterwards.
    This was a ramble, I hope it made sense. Tldr, great video and I would watch infinity more if they're related to improvement

    • @RickiHirsch
      @RickiHirsch  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It did make sense! The notebook is smart. I've been doing something similar with a word doc for art and it's been a huge help.

    Good video my dude.
    On the topic of the curse of knowledge and not to knowing if what you're talking about isn't just already common knowledge.
    The "be kind to yourself" and "forgive yourself" isn't something that i actually know a lot about. Like I've heard it before and can guess what it might look like. But I don't actually know how to do either of those things. Or what those things really mean. A video going in depth on what those are could be nice. Cause I doubt I'm the only one who doesn't get it.

    • @RickiHirsch
      @RickiHirsch  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's a good idea. It took me a long time to understand it (and maybe I still don't). I made something awhile back that kinda touched on it but something more focused would be fun to put together.

    Taking notes on sets played is extremely valuable for me, even just to say “what did I get hit by?” and have something to work towards, so hearing it recommended here was pretty validating. 😅

    • @RickiHirsch
      @RickiHirsch  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "What did I get hit by?" is such a deceptively good question even if it seems kinda goofy sometimes. If I find that I can't answer it after a loss, it's probably time to take a break.

    Fantastic video my dude! Sometimes I feel like fighting game players are the ones that zero in on playing long hours with no breaks, and call it practice when really it doesn't always help, or even cause people to backslide in progress as they get that automation stuck in some bad habits. Also, glad that you didn't just stick to fighting games for your examples. I really think that helps this feel just a bit more accessible to others.

    Usually when I get plateaued in Strive I seek out help from other people who I know are really skilled, and I’m very lucky to have those people in my life. Every time I get that one on one time it helps tons because they’re seeing and noticing things I’m not.

      I also struggle with how to take breaks, how long, and in what ways. They can often get undefined or too long, and i can get stuck in mindless things that isnt really breaks
      How long can we focus and spend attention? How can one tell and test their personal limits? How is it affected by disabilities or neurodivergences like autism? Does being highly sensetive mean that one spends more attention and energy on every point, and thus need to recharge more often?
      Is emotional attention and energy a thing? And getting fatigued by it, having spent too much?
      I get like wiped out for at least a day if i have emotionally laboured a ton
      Also, is attention energy ONE budget or several? Like, physical attention, emotional, social, creative?

    Thank you this is going to help me a lot. But what do when you have severe adhd?How do you fight the inertia and discouragement that comes from losing the new thing hyperfocus and that makes maintaining a regular practice difficult?

    • @RickiHirsch
      @RickiHirsch  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a tough one. I also have ADHD which makes regular practice difficult. The best I've found is to accept that there are going to be good and bad days and trying to make the most out of the good ones.

    I don't understand why so many trans people like Strive. The movement and combo systems feel so restricted and cut down from the rest of the franchise. I've tried to like it so much cause it has some of the best characters and representation in all of the FGC. IDK I guess the game isn't for me and I'm just jealous because my game is dwindling. went and 'play'ed the video. do you still stand by this advice? as in; do you stand by everything said in this video? would you change anything about it? ... do u practice what u preach? the bit on outliers was interesting. we read that book in highschool. when u said something along the lines of, 'it takes time to cultivate expertise, however it takes more than just time. not all time is going to be time well spent'; that's how i felt after reading outliers. people put the hours in but aren't gauaranteed to be exceptional at much of anything. probably you have been breathing for way more than 10,000 hours. probably you aren't an expert at breathing. probably is the same with walking and sleeping.
