Project Sekai aka ProSeka aka Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage is a mobile offshoot of the Project Diva series. More importantly, it also has some of the best queer storytelling I've seen in a minute. It seriously has no reason to be this good. It got me thinking about what kind of media was accessible when I was young(er) and the importance of having stories like this. So let's talk vocaloid, project sekai and more.
I'm also now realizing I mispronounced An's name.

Every character in the game is a different story, they have events that sometimes focus just on their arc, and that’s amazing. Queer representation, depression, su1c1d3 thoughts, family problems, everything a normal teen can experience, that makes u connect with the characters, I love this game.

gonna point out that mizuki’s outfits and style aren’t THAT different from other characters in the game, and the type of fashion they wear is decently popular in japan. even ena wears similar clothing to mizuki, they both seem to share a liking for cute fashion, but ena is confident posting herself on social media, and doesn’t get the same type of comments that mizuki does. this is interesting because it implies that the reason mizuki is getting these comments when others aren’t is because their classmates either remember when they were more masculine presenting, or some of mizuki’s less feminine features can still be noticed.
this was a very well made video, i enjoyed hearing your perspective on mizuki !!! i’d love to see you cover some of the other characters, especially mafuyu or shiho :)

The description of more veiled instances of transphobia towards Mizuki (and the resulting feelings eating away at them and their ability to trust others) were pretty damn apt.
For real, whoever does the writing for this game can't have enough credit for how true-to-life, yet delicately handled the scenario is.

tbh the story that made me cry was……Leo Need main story …?
It was so emotional with honami being bully for being too nice (?), shiho who is judged by everyone bc she is kinda cold, Saki who didn’t have the opportunity to enjoy the happy side of school and Ichika who saw her best friends getting away from her… This was so sad and relatable…

It is really good mizukis problem even more the getting uncomfy just going to the bathroom because it feels like i either will be mocked or people will "find out" who i really am

I love More More Jump so much, so I read the main story for them and like, it is a perfect example of idol struggles. Shizuku and Haruka being bullied by their other members because they were taking up the as the lead for everything, to the point where Shizuku gets told OFF by her members, telling her that she was an ass, when she goes there to officially leave the group and Haruka having to struggle with losing one of their members (Not death even though it sounds like it) from injuries and putting the blame on Haruka, I liked how Mai, even though she lashed out at Haruka like that, she apologized and saw that she was in the wrong. BUT UNLIKE THE MEMBERS OF SHIZUKU'S GROUP WHO IN A LATER EVENT STORY TALK SHIT ABOUT SHIZUKU ON TV. Anyways, then we go to Airi who * LOVE SO MUCH

I love love love Mizuki, they're in my top three favourite characters in this game. What I particularly like about them is that their story isn't exclusively about their presentation or gender, but more about their fear of getting close to others, aka closing the distance. It's protected them thus far, allowing Mizuki to move away from people with little problem and no hurt feelings before they themself risk getting hurt. And while it is pointed out Mizuki can't continue in this state, this behaviour isn't only depicted negatively either! In the still JPN only event Our Escape for Survival, Mizuki's critical advice to fellow unit member Mafuyu, who's in a very unhealthy family situation, is that it's okay to run away sometimes. And I love that, because it's Mizuki pulling from their own bad experiences, opening up just a little for the first time, in order to help their friend.
Though I will never not be mad the localisation changed Mizuki's third event name to What Lies Behind, What Lies Ahead. The original name as translated My Footprints, Your Destination sounds so much more meaninful.

Haven't played this game (not my usual cup of tea) but this video made me shed a few tears. I'm starting my transition at early 40s and yea, everything you say makes a lot of sense. I usually cry a little when watching stuff like Heartstopper, and it's a bittersweet kind of crying, on account of no part of that reality having existed when I was that age. I was in those threads too, back in my days on /a/, /c/, and /u/. I still don't really know if they helped me cope with my feelings, or just kept me from directly confronting them.
Either way, I'm glad we're getting more stories like Mizuki's. Because it means that other young girls and boys get to listen to voices that they can connect with, so they have it easier than we did.
Cuz that's the point, right? We go through shit, see it for the shit it is, and clear it out of the way of the ones who follow us. I don't want anyone to hate themself like I did. I'd rather they watch you and feel some love.

Amazing video!!! It makes me very happy to see people talk about Mizuki and project sekai in general bc I think some of the writing is very underappreciated just bc people see it as some kind of silly gacha game. I think every character is well written with so many things to relate to, I’m cis (not het) but I still relate to Mizuki’s struggles of opening up about their identity, although I relate much more closely to characters like Ena, An and Minori. This game has inspired me in so many ways I couldn’t have imagined, and especially after reading the More more jump story/events I started to feel such a connection to the group and Minori is one of my favorite characters of all time, being someone who struggles with not being good enough. Seeing characters like An, Ena and Minori keep trying makes me want to keep going despite the fact that my skills aren’t as good as the people around me.

One of the more recent events for Mizuki was focusing on their childhood and sister. Finding out your interests are “weird”, and having a supportive family that allows you to indulge in them is wonderful. It’s also mentioned in the “Our Escape for Survival” event.
    It made me cry.

Enas first key story event had me bawling my eyes out and i didn’t understand why at first, I wasnt even expecting me to cry i just did. But as an artist what Enas dad said hit so close to home and the emotions that ena feels about her art as well. Feeling like no matter how hard you try you will never be good enough or talented enough as an artist. To feel like no one actually likes or cares about the thing that you pour so much of yourself into and to be told that it isnt and will never be good enough is crushing. Its something that ive been grappling with myself, trying to figure out how i feel about my art.
Pjsk is so absolutely wonderful at portraying stuggle and its writing is just amazing. I love all of its storylines and characters, how they relate with eachother and interact. Its just so beautiful and keeps me utterly invested evertime.

Once again, thank you Hatsune Miku

This is such a good analysis video. I agree, while I myself am quite a big love live fan, and the story for love live is good and relatable too (Well, in the anime and manga, personally I found Chika's struggles and Riko's pretty relatable. And Honoka overworking herself to the point where she got sick and passed out was also pretty relatable. Also Liella's story in the anime was pretty good. I cried at Ren's arc, and also cried during the sunshine movie, tbh.) Sif was more like a fluff rhythm game.), sekai definitely takes a more deeper approach and doesn't shy away from real life struggles most young people go through.
As a person who also struggles with gender stuff throughout most of my life, Mizuki is pretty relatable. Especially with being afraid of being judged and scared of telling their friends. Sometimes, when I wear masculine clothing, and try to style my hair in a more masculine look, I tend to get stared at by ppl when out in public. I remember shopping for a bow tie, and my mother was complaining about it, yet my aunt was supporting me. Also, this is the first time, I've heard that Mizuki's bow tie was given to them. That's sweet. ^^
Tsukasa is my most favorite character in the series, and he struggles with his past, and tends to compare himself with other actors, and tries to hide most of his struggles from others, and the reason as to why he created his own sekai, was because his feelings of becoming an actor and to make others and his sick sister Saki, smile were his main goal in life, but somewhere along the way, he forgot, and wxs and Miku and the others in his sekai helped him remember. I've seen fans make comparisons with him Mafuyu, and the number 88 is an important number for Tsukasa, and wxs. In one of his most recent focus events, Tsukasa starved himself and decided to go without food and water for about three days, just so he can grasp the personality of the character he wanted to get the audition for. I found this relatable as a person who has mental illness and at some point in my life, has had not eaten hardly anything and lived an unhealthy diet for months, just so I can lose weight, cause I believed I was too fat. I ate like a granola bar and drinked water and that was it. I remember being so weak and almost passing out at times due to my unhealthy diet. D : I found Tsukasa's struggles there, quite relatable. There's also hidden meanings of Tsukasa's struggles that's carefully hidden in the song lyrics in some of his event focus songs, like Tondemo and 88. And even the song that helped him find his true feelings, "world hasn't even started yet", has some pretty deep lyrics.
It's definitely unique compared to most other music rhythm games. I can relate to a lot of the characters, especially Tsukasa, and Nene. Each of the characters are written so well, and the writers definitely put a lot of thought and love into them. I also like how each event focus event, is like a continuation of each characters growth. Even the mix events are somewhat important to the characters story. (Sorry if I rambled a bit here. lol. :L . )

I myself, am also not a young person. At least not young as in my teens. I'm somewhere in my mid 20's, and when project diva was announced, I was about 10, I believe. When I graduated hs, the final project diva game, project diva x, was released. And then followed project diva future tone and colorful tone for ps4, I believe. And yeah, I remember those car commercials for Miku, lol. :L
When I was in my teens and pre teen years, we had anime like Ouran, and kuroshitsuji, and naruto, etc. And censorship on tv with anime dubs in the west was quite common as well. I remember having to ordering copies of dvds through mail so I can watch them, before streaming tv shows and anime were a thing. I remember it started to become a thing back in like 2011, I believe? I thought it was so futuristic at the time. lol. I feel old.
By the time I was in high school, Love live sif was starting to become pretty popular, since it was a new game at the time. The only rhythm games which were quite popular among ppl my age at the time were miku and love live. I was in my early twenties when sekai was announced, and I remember seeing the trailer for wxs, and the design for Leo/need Miku and the rest of the characters. Glad I decided to give the game a try, as a long time fan of Miku and rhythm/idol franchises like Love live. ^^

have you read mizuki's 5th focus event story? as of writing this it's not out on the global server yet as it's a new year themed event but the story goes into mizuki's childhood and their really wholesome relationship with their older sister!
on the topic of nightcord events, mafuyu's 4th unit focus event ("saying goodbye to my masked persona", i think it was called) also hit really hard to me personally; the scene where she was finally able to let all her feelings out in front of her mother was one of the few times a gacha game has ever driven me to literal tears.

Honestly ive never experienced overt harrassment or bullying over being trans in school. My highschol was pretty queer despite being in the south. There were a lot of popular bi/gay kids, nonbinary people, and even a trans girl! Besides one incident where i was loudly asked what was in my pants, it was never what you hear from many trans people growing up. What i experienced was more like mizuki's. I often over heard people contemplating my gender, and in class i even heard someone talking about me and saying they just call people like that "it". (Funnily enough thats one of my pronouns now)
I never really got bothered by it, i had a very queer and supportive friend group, so i guess it never hit me very hard because i wasnt isolated by it. But it is a shock to hear a trans story i actually related to in regards to bullying growing up and it made me think. I love that the queer media is so plentiful in all genres, and i dont think it'll ever not make me want to cry lmao.

@RickiHirsch nice! If by the chapter with the fortune teller in volume 2 you think there's nothing to say about it I think I'd be surprised, and the whole thing is 3 volumes long, the bulk of which are covered in respective Mori Calliope streams (only a late chunk of volume 2 of no story consequence is left out if you go through it that way).
Regarding the Miku game in this video, it's assignment of a group to the player seems conceptually interesting, especially considering the genre - I don't have much experience with rhythm games outside recent dabbling in Theatrhythm, and I wondered how that fares on mobile and how much time it expects from the player per day (Dissidia Opera Omnia can be a demanding one as it is at times...).

I love this game. You said that just representation alone isn’t enough to be a good but honestly this game got me to stop viewing trans people as problems and see that their struggles are real. Following these characters over years really gets you to care for them, and now I know that I could never ask Mizuki to be their old self. The real Mizuki is the one who they want to be. The one who gets excited over lace and ribbons and teasing Akito. Both the footsteps and ribbon events had me crying. I know this is a fictional story where Vocaloids live in magic phone worlds but the people feel so real. Thank you for everything Miku and Mizuki! I’ve even begun accepting some parts of myself that I hadn’t before.
P.S. Tōya just has to be autistic. I don’t know if I relate to any character more than him. How are these stories so good?!

mizuki is such a lovely character and theyre the character ive tried to collect the most cards for (though i ended up with kanade as my largest collection. she shows up a lot in the gachas). im always critical of the way gachas can be exploitative but something i like about project sekai is you can enjoy all the quality story 100% separate from the gacha system. the events are all unlocked for the player at the end of the event period so even if you never play a single song, you can still read all the story. and the gameplay thats there is genuinely great. i think that actually has a big impact on mizukis story. theres no info to be missed for players who are just now starting the game or who struggle with it. it feels like the writers arent cynically making stories to make you spend more. it feels like they really care and want something that shines own its own merits. i think its telling that despite playing love live for literally 8 years, i dont have a shrine dedicated to them. only to nightcord.
mafuyu from nightcord has also had a big impact on me. transmasc headcanons seem to be pretty popular for her in the fandom and its a concept i havent been able to get off my mind. the whole good girl persona, rejection from her mom regarding her personhood and desires, and dueting with mizuki in villain are some points that hit hard for me. though headcanons arent unique to just mafuyu or project sekai, i think the comfort to portray lgbt stories gives them a slightly different weight in terms of fandom. vocaloid has been a home for many people going through difficult times due to its capability for anonymity and to express difficult emotions without having to sing them yourself. and to some degree that includes lgbt expression considering the number of vocaloid songs which focus on that.
also, i feel you on that academia and voice stuff. having a thoroughly clockable voice and appearance has made navigating through academia real rough at times. especially when my departments often talk acceptance to my face but then say things behind my back or misgender me.

Yeah only issue with gacha is that it makes the short stories inaccessible. However, a lot of ppl collect the side stories and post them online so it’s really cool to be able to get the extra content from the characters and events you enjoy.
And I agree, makes sense they’d chose vocaloid for this. It feels like vocaloid fans r the ones who made the game, and the stories fit with a lot of common themes for vocaloid songs.
Also, thanks for explaining why ppl HC Mafuyu as transmasc cuz I never understood why. But now I see it’s not necessarily a missing detail in the story but rather a theme present in her story. Tho in my case I noticed her mother is pushing her towards a stereotypically “masculine” field of being a doctor whereas she wants to go into a more stereotypically “feminine” role of a nurse which is interesting. Her mother’s desire to force her child into abandoning her own emotions also reminds me of some of the pressures ppl put on men (besides anger).
I love the fact that the writers have confirmed that the characters will be aging up and going into higher grade levels. We can also see severe status quo changes for all the characters as time goes on. Seeing the story develop this way, where characters change over time and reference past events really show how well crafted the story is. And the characters have so much to them. I love it.

I hadn't thought about it prior to reading your comment, but you're 100% right about how other games shelve stories after the event is over. Having everything accessible give project sekai's writer's a lot of narrative space to develop characters overtime. I didn't realize how much I wanted that out of other series.
I'd read Airi transfemme HCs but hadn't come across that HC for Mafuyu but it make sense. I'll have to go re-read some of her focus events.
Also, same about Love Live. I just moved and don't think I'll be unboxing any of those figures. I do plan on picking up some nightcord releases though.

I think Mizuki’s experience brought me a pang of empathy, because I talk about others behind their backs. It wasn’t an LGBT-related person I was talking smack about, but they also listened to what I said once. I was basically that invisible side-character!
Both past and present me agree that it was pretty insensitive and hypocritical. The worst replies can be found online, but is there a way to get a win-win situation, where I’m genuinely not judgemental about people that differentiate while also letting the person stay themselves?
    Thanks lol
