It’s a shame that Angle lost the title that night and was on his way out of the WWE shortly thereafter. I love that match because it’s truly a dominant Kurt Angle-performance. But if I’m being honest, I hated seeing Angle lose that night. My favorite wrestler of all time and imo the GOAT.
Plans changed because Eddie died in November and then Batista got injured in December. They brought Angle over to Smackdown to win a battle royal for the title. Fans had turned on Cena by this point and were cheering Angle in their feud so they turned him back face. Dunno why they didn't just have Orton win the title in that battle royal and a 1 on 1 match with Rey at Wrestlemania. As usual, they overbooked things.
Because at the time the wrestlemania world title match was not finalized yet. Hell the person who won the royal rumble had not been finalized yet. At one point there was discussions about undertaker actually returning to the royal rumble to win the royal rumble match rather than just confront Kurt Angle like he actually did. And have there no way out match at wrestlemania for the world title instead. There was a bunch of potential matches for wrestlemania for the world title that still hadn’t been decided yet.
@AntiBasketballAmerican spoilers: if you're writing comments on wrestling podcasts, you are a smark. Wish the blind Meltzer haters would stop think "smark" is some kind of dirty word when it just means someone who is into wrestling more than a mark which is someone who doesn't know anything about the backstage ongoings

Well John Cena really don't count because its expected for him to get booed. He's the thin line between love and hate, and it fits his character well because that's what he's about being accepted for this energy and is the Superman of Wrestling. Mind you not a lot of people like superman (me being one of them) so think he's overrated and that's how he feels about John Cena. Now Rey Mysterio that was different because they were booing him despite his character at that time being based on that you can accomplish your dreams, starting at number 2 winning the royal rumble, ECW and WCW legend, he dedicated that match to Eddie, so aside from all that you would think the crowd would be more compassionate about that but no
@@dboslice Actually at that time it was shocking. Cena had been red hot with the crowd just one year before. But once he stopped rapping and became the invincible Marine, and kept on winning, fans got tired of him. It was shocking at the time because no major babyface had ever had that kind of hatred, not in decades. Now we can say it’s commonplace, but back then when it was new, it was stunning.
Oh come on! Rey was already a great Babyface before even Eddie passed away (RIP Eddie). I will also add that Rey is one of the best Babyface ever, better than Cena too.
The fact that Eddie had been losing to him for almost a year, didn't help either. I got the feeling that they had been " building " Mysterio since Wrestlemania 21 for that moment in Eddie's expense.
That’s just the way wwe booked Rey at the time, I’m not sure if they felt that linking Rey to Eddie was the only way to get him over but that sure is what it seem like was their thought process
I remember a segment between JBL and World Champion Rey Mysterio in 2006 and the crowd started chanting "Eddie" and JBL responded by saying to Rey "they don't even chant your name." Fact is that Rey Mysterio was not over enough to be the World Champion at this time and he was only shoehorned into the title picture by exploiting Eddie's death. This led to crowds booing him.
I remember watching it and I think I remember they would randomly boo Rey and Orten through the out the match but once Rey won everyone cheered him, so it wasn't like they ruined Reys big moment
I’m from Chicago and a huge Rey mysterio fan! I was prolly 13 or 14 getting out of wrestle but I had to watch cause it was wrestlemania in Chicago! However I do remember getting bummed out that my hometown was booing a legend like Rey. But I also understood boo’s were cause it was obvious Rey was winning to pander to Eddie’s death which just made it worse and fans wanted Kurt to win. The fact they cut the match time short yet try still try to make you “feel” emotions for Rey’s big moment was just salt in the wounds. Like you cut it short why cause the hbk vs McMahon could go longer? Or the snooze fest for HHH vs Cena? Or the legendary pillow fight between Candice & torrie Wilson? Smh bs like that is why the company went downhill and I stop watching.
It was in Eddie's honor, tho they went through pretty shallow waters to get there but the royal rumble in 2006 was a great tribute for Eddie, although I felt like Rey was the least closest to Eddie when you had Chavo and Benoit in that same match who were way closer to Eddie
Nah. Fans booed Rey because they didn't like WWE using Eddie's death as a storyline (even though Eddie more than likely would have been cool with it). I wasn't especially bothered by the story, but the segment with Randy saying Eddie was in hell was a bit much for me at the time. Good Triple Threat though. I was salty at how brief the match was. I loved how Rey used his old WCW/ECW finisher to win the WHC Title.
That's the excuse they gave at the time for constantly bringing Eddie's name up, that he would've wanted to be remembered. But WWE had to WWE, so they went way over the top, and the fans took it out (unfairly) on Rey.
@@TophDaGreat that’s very true but isn’t that obvious in the sense that Rey NEVER would have been world champion! But is that a reason to Boo someone? Like Rey and Eddie were like brothers. It’s a good feel factor to give Rey a push. Eddie lived on through Benoit, Chavo and Rey! I don’t see why fans would hate and boo Rey. Angle NEVER would have beaten Austin at Unforgiven 01 if it wasn’t for 911! What Rey was doing and saying... as much as it’s storyline... It was a shoot. Rey was performing with the courage and spirit of Eddie... and WWE wanted a good feel factor as a result. How fans can boo that is complete BS.
This Conrad guy loves to talk rubbish about HHH, trying to stir the pot and get a reaction out of Kurt so try say something controversial. I’m glad Kurt is a good guy and doesn’t feed in to this guys talk.
Honestly blame the Undertaker for the fans booing Mysterio. Why? Because one month prior he and Kurt put on one of the most absolute bangers of a match and that launched the Wrestling Machine into the stratosphere as the best babyface.
I don't think that the Chicago crowd was booing Rey because they were completely pro-Angle. Most wrestling fans in general KNEW that Rey was going to win that match because it was his "destiny" from Eddie. So the writing was on the wall from the beginning, and nobody liked how predictable this match was going to be.
To me all of the booing made perfect sense to me. With Rey, rather than him winning the Rumble and the title because he’s an extremely talented underdog the undertones were that he was only getting the title because Eddie died. Eddie was in the main event that night not Rey and it even followed him over to his hall of fame induction. Cena was easy, he moved away from what actually made him baby face and stand out which was his Word Life era. Look at the reaction to him returning to it against the Rock. With Mickey - why wouldn’t you think a super hot lesbian wouldn’t get over back in those days? Basically it was wall to wall bad booking for the reactions they wanted.
Although Rey is an all-time great, him being placed in the title picture right after Eddie passed away and piggybacking on that tragic event came across as a blatant attempt to capitalize on Eddie's death. I'd never root against a talented individual being put in a position of winning the title, but context is important to know why some people were not having it. It's the same reason them using Paul Bearer's death to hype Punk vs. Undertaker was wrong or using Reid Flair's death to make Charlotte more sympathetic against Paige was distasteful. Real life happens, but there has to be a line that keeps certain events apart from wrestling, especially when it's not necessary to promote or build up a feud.
This is a very cynical way to view Rey’s royal rumble & championship wins. There were a few times Eddie’s passing was used for cheap heat (Orton promo), but it was much less “capitalizing” on Eddie and much more honoring him. That’s why they went with Rey. With all the honoring of Eddie that Rey did in the build up to Wrestlemania 22 it felt like a perfect tribute. It was a love letter to Eddie through one of his best friends.
@@guwopman3503 It didn't feel like an organic rise though. Rey talked about Eddie more than himself at this point, as if fans were going to forget Eddie. Since WWE is no stranger to exploiting tragic events for ratings, I think it's safe to say that they went overboard.
You almost forgot to mention that same seanson NO WAY OUT 2006 is one of the only 4 times Undertaker was defeated wtihout any intervention. 1999 stone cold 2006 kurt angle 2008 or 07 batista 2008 or 09 thw russian guy.
Yeah but they should've booed him after he win the championship if that's the case. But yeah that's true because if it wasn't for Eddie he wouldn't win the main title.
True but at the same time it was definitely the best place and time to give Rey the push he deserved , if it wasn't for that push I doubt Rey would have gotten any other major pushes after that , we all know how WWE treats the smaller guys
@@maodijong3661 Rey was making them a butt load of money off merch sales and what not it would have been stupid of them on a business perspective to not give him that push , do you think WWE gives titles to people who just happen to " look " like world champions ? No they give the title to whom would make them the most money and during that time Rey was their cover boy for a while
@@Buccallmann456 They should have waited until late 2006 or sometime in 2007 without having Rey constantly mention and reference Eddie. Rey practically wasn't even his own character anymore because he talked about Eddie more than himself.
That is true, as much as I respect John and the sweat equity he's poured into the company, Kurt's right, they had the wrong idea. For his "Hustle. Loyalty. and Respect" mantra and the "Never Give Up" mantra, if they focused on making Cena a more convincing version of Hogan--you know: Hogan in a big match is gonna be booked to getting pummeled until he does the iconic Hulk-Up and gets the babyface heat and win--it would have been better for John, especially in places like Chicago if he looked like an authentic underdog that had to actually scrape and claw for every victory instead of just acting like he is one. This winded up being what happened with Daniel Bryan: winning against the odds, and the WWE writers room was at the mercy of the fans at that time.
I remember watching it that night and knew that the only reason they booed Mysterio is because he was being pushed only because Eddie Guerrero died. They hated that Rey was getting pushed and Chavo wasn't. Not saying Chavo deserves to be World Champ after Eddie died, but that Chavo became an afterthought and Rey was representing Eddie and not Chavo.
granted chavo is blood to eddie, rey and eddie were linked together just as much as chavo, which is kinda funny. also, you'd be lying to yourself if you thought chavo couldve filled in that position.
Imagine Chavo world champ lmao, he is a good wrestler most definitely but a very bland and generic persona. Rey got that underdog feeling to him and had the mask which made him more standout and marketable. I mean we've all seen kids in the crowd with a Rey mask.
It was because Eddie died and it was obvious Rey was gonna win. Orton was originally gonna win the title from Batista, and then there were talks of Kurt retaining against Orton. So yeah, Rey winning felt cheap.
I was there. The "smart" fans just didnt appreciate that mysterio was a placeholder for eddie, mysterio as good as he is and was, handnt earned it yet, kurt was the f-ing man and just as able to carry that torch... mickie was just more over, she did the finger licking spot and turned the crowd, thats different...
The real story is that the people were rejecting who the company was pushing. Counter culture was becoming the main culture. Rey did not get an organic push, he received this particular push because Eddie died and that left a sour taste in their mouths.
Rey Mysterio winning the world heavyweight championship was shittie. Felt like it was sympathetic due to Eddie's death. Plus he wasn't a heavyweight. Made no sense.
people knew Kurt was the most dominant and credible... everyone wanted him to win, his wrestling machine gimmick was too good, especially after beating taker
im torn on this, cause ive been a big mysterio fan for seemingly my whole life, and kurt angle was DA SHIT at the time. looking back, they did rey such a disservice with they booked him, they almost made him look pathetic. he loses his mania match to randy orton, they still put him in and make it a triple threat. then the way they booked the match was so bad for rey, having him not only tap but then pull the ref out to keep him from seeing randy tap. after the royal rumble, rey was book like shit for all of 06. also, i have a love/hate relationship with the crowds in Chicago philly and new york. they always bring energy but holy shit do they like to hijack shows and seemingly go against the grain just for the sake of doing so. it always feels like they have to be THAT asshole about everything, maybe im wrong
People thought it was distasteful towards Eddie? I dont know, i thought it was pretty respectful. You have Rey Mysterio who loved Eddie put on a really good performance, win the title (rey deserved imo) and give a nice farewell to Eddie. I feel like they just wanted to do something to honour Eddie amd quite frankly i think they did it well.
They were openly exploiting a death. The whole "I'm doing this for dead Eddie" should have ended at Royal Rumble 2006. Instead they dragged till Summerslam 2006 where Rey also got heavily booed against Chavo Guerrero.
When Kurt Angle brought up Rey’s title reign this was the moment that Vince McMahon decide to slow down his momentum as champion it would be a few years until Rey got his shot again. Rey was in more middle card matches before main eventing again it sucked to be in his position but at least he got his redemption years later & it worked out well 👏
IDC what anyone says they booed him because the fan base was for Kurt and they should have because it doesn't matter how many years you put in you shouldn't be give the world title on just because basis, you don't make a lightweight guy a world heavyweight champion just because he put in years it would be like putting the world title on hornswoggle and have him beat big show like what make it make sense.
Not really. I love Trish, but her reign had gotten extremely stale by that point, and Mickie was entertaining as hell, and new, and easy on the eyes. The fans wanted something new.
That doesn’t make sense what Kurt said about Cena. Cause Undertaker and Goldberg were invincible too but I dont remember them getting booed in there first 6 years wrestling. Fans just like to pick and choose who they boo and cheer which is fine but dont be hypocritical and say Cena got booed cause he was over pushed but so was other wrestlers and never received boos
Undertaker was never booked to be invincible(other than at Mania) he lost a bunch and Goldberg after 98 was definitely getting booed plus he lost a bunch too. The problem with Cena was that he was booked to be 00s Hogan @coreymelo5962
Kurt saying John was an up and comer in 2006 while he was a veteran is such an odd statement, because if you just go off main roster, Kurt had been up for 6 1/2 years, while Cena had been up for almost 4.
True, but Cena was only a main eventer since 2005 at the time. So even though he's been around since 2002, he was still green as a top guy for barely a year.
I don't think Chicago was the reason Rey didn't looked as a Main eventer by Vince. Because Cena was overly booed and more so that night. Rey was always a big babyface he was never a heel. Cena started as a nobody then become a heel. Later turn face with an anti hero persona. Which the fans loved. Once he dropped the Anti hero fans got turned off by it. Yet Cena was over at WM 21 by WM 22 most of the fans got tired and wanted someone new. I think what hurt Rey was a Triple threat I think Kurt and Rey one on one would have been better and should have been the last Match. Cena vs HHH didn't have anything to celebrate at the end a but a win.
It's Chicago, we like the bad guys. Rey was too polished and too goody goody for us. We like good heels because we can tell when there's a little bit of them splashed in that character. It's real and it's raw. When triple h turned on dx and joined the corporation he became one of my favorites and the deeper they got into the game character and the more of who he really was came out I wanted to see him win. It's something about the Chicago mindset that stuff like that draws us in
Rey Mysterio is the greatest luchadore ever. But he’s a tiny. To let him win the HEAVYWEIGHT championship was a joke. And after he won all he did was job in non title matches till he lost.
I was in the crowd that night. It was nothing on Mysterio. We were all about WRESTLING and THE WRESTLING MACHINE. That's all it was. Booing Rey was tongue and cheek, at least it felt to me. How dare you get offense on THE WRESTLING MACHINE! lol
Nah, they loved Angle bc he was the best in the world & they boo’d because Rey should never beat Angle in any type of match. They gave him the belt out of pity and that shit was ass. As fans, we knew Angle had a few months left after that.
Yeah the PPV was awesome but the crowd booing the babyfaces just and cheering the heels was annoying as hell. I hate try hard wannabe edgy fans that do this
Dude Triple H is a great heel, but he is not a great main eventer. He was looked as a transitional champion during the rock taker and stone cold era. When he was running as the world heavyweight champion many people decided to watch more smackdown because HHH buried the top baby faces. Booker t was expected to do a huge run and crowd was behind him, he buried him. Rvd was hot and hhh buried him, Kane had just comeback and he was getting traction and he got buried. He put over goldberg and HBK and passed to batista afterwards. That was even considered the low point in raw because smackdown was beating the in the ratings
Well Kurt I'm sorry man, you were just too good at the time & people liked you a lot & cheered u louder, even though u bent over backwards to get that crowd to call you an A**hole & get booed out of the building.
I thought Eddie died before this match?
Never got discussed much, but a lot of people booed Eddie against Angle at WM20. It's just one of those things that was gonna happen.
To be fair the boos were very minimal and by the end, the crowd popped huge for him

@AntiBasketballAmerican that is true
@AntiBasketballAmerican spoilers: if you're writing comments on wrestling podcasts, you are a smark. You call that booing!? Forward wrestlemania 22 to the main event and watch the hometown reception they gave John Cena.
Now Rey Mysterio that was different because they were booing him despite his character at that time being based on that you can accomplish your dreams, starting at number 2 winning the royal rumble, ECW and WCW legend, he dedicated that match to Eddie, so aside from all that you would think the crowd would be more compassionate about that but no
Even JBL got more love than Rey Mysterio at WM22 and that's shocking
@@dboslice Actually at that time it was shocking. Cena had been red hot with the crowd just one year before. But once he stopped rapping and became the invincible Marine, and kept on winning, fans got tired of him. It was shocking at the time because no major babyface had ever had that kind of hatred, not in decades. Now we can say it’s commonplace, but back then when it was new, it was stunning.
Hometown? Cena isn’t from Chicago
@@TheMrmatthewparker no shit
People were tired of him using Eddie to get over
I remember a segment between JBL and World Champion Rey Mysterio in 2006 and the crowd started chanting "Eddie" and JBL responded by saying to Rey "they don't even chant your name."
Fact is that Rey Mysterio was not over enough to be the World Champion at this time and he was only shoehorned into the title picture by exploiting Eddie's death.
Iirc, the booing was in response to them using Eddie’s name throughout the storyline and Rey’s entire main event run
It was in Eddie's honor, tho they went through pretty shallow waters to get there but the royal rumble in 2006 was a great tribute for Eddie, although I felt like Rey was the least closest to Eddie when you had Chavo and Benoit in that same match who were way closer to Eddie
No it wasn’t.

Well to be fair Chicago is like winter 10 months a year so I’d be pissed off too.
So if that’s the case why booo Rey. Wouldn’t it make sense to boo Randy?
@@humblesmith1215 Because Rey benefitted from it and most likely never would have been world champ if Eddie never died.
@@humblesmith1215 Fans can boo whatever they want lol Idk why you're so bothered by the fact that some people didn't react the way you wanted them to.
This Conrad guy loves to talk rubbish about HHH, trying to stir the pot and get a reaction out of Kurt so try say something controversial. I’m glad Kurt is a good guy and doesn’t feed in to this guys talk.
Conrad does a lot of these podcasts, wonder if he gets people like flair or bischoff to talk trash about hhh too
Because they used eddies death as an angle
Honestly blame the Undertaker for the fans booing Mysterio. Why? Because one month prior he and Kurt put on one of the most absolute bangers of a match and that launched the Wrestling Machine into the stratosphere as the best babyface.
Yes same with Trish they liked her but digged Mickie at the time just like Angle and i kinda agreed
Chicago, Philly, Madison Square Garden, and anywhere in Canada are the best wrestling crowds.
Most disrespectful crowds
UK, Anaheim

Mysterio got booed cos everyone understood that he was being used to sell out Eddie's legacy.
@@Buccallmann456 But not every wrestler deserves a main event push. Rey was a great worker who should only have had the mid card titles.
How recent is this? Kurt looks AMAZING
I get wanting Kurt to win, but booing Rey? That’s messed up? I hate when fans do that.
i think it had more to do with them seeing it as what it was. using eddie's death to push rey.
I was happy for Rey
But 2006 Kurt angle was a different machine, the run he started in tna was also legendary.
Chavo was not world champion material. He was nowhere near as marketable and likable as Rey Mysterio was and is.
It was Chicago. Smark epicenter. Mysterio and other babyfaces getting booed wasn't a surprise.
I wonder ppl rank Cleveland as a wrestling city
Only just realised Angle actually has a very poor record in triple threat matches
He only won one Triple Threat I believe
Cause he knows he has no chance and doesn't even try
@@victorspell1 at least he won the first and only 6 men hell in a cell match
The real story is that the people were rejecting who the company was pushing. Counter culture was becoming the main culture. Rey did not get an organic push, he received this particular push because Eddie died and that left a sour taste in their mouths.
1:28 - for the actual question
Rey Mysterio winning the world heavyweight championship was shittie. Felt like it was sympathetic due to Eddie's death. Plus he wasn't a heavyweight. Made no sense.
You’re just mad that a 5’4 wrestler who’s smaller than you won the gold while you’re still working a 9-5
people knew Kurt was the most dominant and credible...
everyone wanted him to win, his wrestling machine gimmick was too good, especially after beating taker
im torn on this, cause ive been a big mysterio fan for seemingly my whole life, and kurt angle was DA SHIT at the time. looking back, they did rey such a disservice with they booked him, they almost made him look pathetic. he loses his mania match to randy orton, they still put him in and make it a triple threat. then the way they booked the match was so bad for rey, having him not only tap but then pull the ref out to keep him from seeing randy tap. after the royal rumble, rey was book like shit for all of 06. also, i have a love/hate relationship with the crowds in Chicago philly and new york. they always bring energy but holy shit do they like to hijack shows and seemingly go against the grain just for the sake of doing so. it always feels like they have to be THAT asshole about everything, maybe im wrong
Rey was in more middle card matches before main eventing again it sucked to be in his position but at least he got his redemption years later & it worked out well 👏
I saw Kurt angle at the mall up the street from me when I was a kid, I was very surprised he was super shredder jacked.
Ray was great, I was at 05 rumble after Eddie died and the whole crowd was behind ray to win that. Was a real magical moment
I hate Chicago crowds
IDC what anyone says they booed him because the fan base was for Kurt and they should have because it doesn't matter how many years you put in you shouldn't be give the world title on just because basis, you don't make a lightweight guy a world heavyweight champion just because he put in years it would be like putting the world title on hornswoggle and have him beat big show like what make it make sense.
Imagine comparing Rey Mysterio to Hornswoggle.
Conrad must be getting paid very well hosting all these podcast

The problem with Cena was that he was booked to be 00s Hogan
@coreymelo5962
I still booed him. I loved Rey Mysterio but I wanted Kurt angle to win the whole triple threat match.

Booker t was expected to do a huge run and crowd was behind him, he buried him. Rvd was hot and hhh buried him, Kane had just comeback and he was getting traction and he got buried.
