The main draw of these stores though is that they have such a vast array of products, so you can consolidate a whole day of shopping into one trip, and economies of scale allow them to beat most other retailers on the price of most items.

There was a WWII POW camp near me. The camp housed younger soldiers who were raised on farms. Local farmers would load prisoners in trucks and have them work in the orchards and do chores around the farm such as feed animals, milk cows, and tame horses. The farmer's wives would feed the prisoners cookies and pie at the end of their work shift before going back to the camp. Goldfish crackers are crackers shaped like little fish with smiling faces. They are especially popular with children.
Cheetos are made from cornmeal and cheese. They're shaped something like fat spaetzle. They are crunchy (kind of like a thick slice of expertly toasted bread) and covered with cheese powder and are intensely tasty.
We do have Lidl in the U.S. but it only started to open here a few years ago, and it's in only a few regions.
There are more Trader Joe's but they are not in every town - I think they are only near larger cities. (Trader Joe's started out as U.S. owned chain in California, now owned by Aldi North I think. They are similar to Lidl and Aldi in that they carry their own Trader Joe's brands. They bag your groceries for you, though :) )
As others have mentioned, Walmart carries a lot of groceries but it's not their specialty. If she were to go to an actual grocery store, especialy one with a good delicatessen section, she might find an even better selection of fruits, vegetables, and prepared foods like hummus and potato salad.
Most of our grocery store chains are regional. Some areas also have stores that carry products popular with people from international backgrounds - for example, from South America, Asia, or the Carribbean.

Just in America alone, there are approximately 769,000 beef growers, 24,000 dairies, 67,000 pig farms, 168,000 chicken farms, and 4,500 fish farms. This doesn't include the tens of thousands of vegetable farms and orchards. America produces far more food than it can use and there is no reason whatsoever for food inflation in America or the slightest lack of food. Quit believing the lies, about food shortages are causing higher prices or shortages, because it's not about a lack of food, it's because they are selling too much of it to other countries.
There is no way an animal flu can infect anything but a very small fraction of the food supply, because the American food supply is massive, spread out from coast to coast, and all of these growers are isolated from each other. So, there is very little opportunity for a disease to spread.

So she paid in the $55-$65 range depending on where they are and what year and so on. So in Euro's 50-60. She would also have to pay tax and that depends on the area as well. In Oregon we don't have a Sales Tax so we'd just pay the flat $60 or whatever the final price is.

I wouldn't say its common to open up food packages prior to buying. It does happen sometimes, especially when shopping with kids. Some of those pre-made processed products are common but most american's don't view them as "quality" food, lol. Like the Cheetos Mac n Cheese (the color on that is noticably weird but it does taste good lol). And yea, we are often spoiled for choice when it comes to pre-made foods, even from Grocery Store Bakers.

Yes, although Walmart's produce quality isn't the highest, the USA also imports huge amounts of produce from South America with the opposite climate such as Chile so off-season iten buys are still widely available. but more costly. Also, we have large refrigerator-freezers in the US, and often buY frozen vegetables picked at their prime and often better than "fresh". You should see the Walmart frozen FOOD FREEZERSVthat take up several aisles!
If you desire higher quality fresh produce, there are several national and regional chains that specialize in this, such as Whole Foods, Fresh Market, etc., but you pay for the higher quality.

One more thing. Because so much variety in fresh produce is available year-round,. Americans have largely lost the "buy in season" instinct. Maybe the closest we come are fall and winter flavors like pumpkin spice and Christmas peppermint.

Yeah, I don’t know what person said we don’t have fresh vegetables and fruits here…we have massive amounts as you’ve seen. Sure smaller stores have a smaller total amount, but they all typically have huge amounts, of most any kind you can think of, that’s reasonable. And each major region of the US typically has minor differences in certain fruits or vegetables that are more common in that area. Plus like others said, most places have their own market areas, and farmers markets where you can buy stuff directly from who grew and harvested it. Also huge bags of things like salad, and fruits. To containers of precut fruit and vegetables that cost more, but are handy at times to just get, of in a hurry, or for like a get together or something, where you don’t want to buy 12 different fruits and clean and cut them up. So whoever said we don’t have that, is crazy, or doesn’t look at anything but junk food and meat. Even our gas stations sell fresh fruits in lots of places, granted it’s like only apple and bananas, oranges. Stuff like that. And really big travel centers, the big gas stations carry even more. Though they are typically more expensive than a grocery store/supermarket.

I think people across the pond don't understand is that most of us only go to the grocery store once a week and get everything for the week then. Some even do just one shop for an entire month. We freeze a lot of things for use later. Many Europeans are used to shopping every day or every other day so you don't need large packages tht will last awhile.

    • @h3lblad3
      @h3lblad3 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@tiberius1837, junk food is rarely cheaper even in the US. It is, however, convenient and takes little preparation time which is great for families that work multiple jobs and don't have much time to cook or need something easy for their kids to consume without burning the house down. It's also common to get some forms of junk food from food banks, so you can't really assume that all of it is bought by the family eating it.
Americans have more problems than that, though.
      - For one, we don't understand portion sizes. Most Americans eat too much, which is part of the reason we think healthy food costs too much. I didn't grow up in a family that understood portion sizes. Your portion size was "whatever fills the plate".
      - For another, many Americans don't understand the concept of seasonal fruit -- or don't care. We want the fruit we like NOW and not when they're in season and we pay the extra price for it. Fruit is extremely expensive. I wouldn't buy it at all (outside of canned fruits) if it weren't for my girlfriend.
      - For yet a third, we Americans do unfortunate things like buying pre-cut broccoli florets that costs significantly more than just buying broccoli. The whole broccoli is edible, tastes the same, and costs way less than buying pre-cut broccoli. Eat the whole thing, not just the florets. Stop peeling your potatoes. That sort of thing. The food waste alone is costing American families GOBS of money all the time.
Onions and garlic grow greens out the top when they get older -- not only is that an indicator that you can grow the plant, but you can just chop up the greens and eat them. It's not a sign to throw the onion/garlic out. I recently plopped some sweet potatoes in some dirt for just that reason.
I've had to stand in my fair share of food bank lines. I work part-time because my girlfriend and her mother are disabled. We've had to learn to scale back hard on costs.
That being said, I also want to soapbox on this:
A ton of food given out at food banks is shit like McTrader's canned food which is inedible and should be considered a human rights violation.
Opening the cans can smell like death and the peas alone are so hard they could be used as BBs.

Three big tips I suggest for anyone visiting the U.S. and I highly encourage people to at least visit.
    1. if you're going to walmart or other large store. expect to spend 3 to 4+ hours in the store to see most of the items. having someone local that can act as a guide will help until you learn the store yourself.
    2. connect with someone in the city/town you plan to visit to act as a 'tour guide' to the best food and shopping spots. they can also tell you the 'tourist' spots. they will also help guide you away from any areas that you should avoid, as each city will have areas that are high crime, and the locals know where those are... not to say that you'll always be safe, but much safer if you stay out of those areas.
    3. if you plan to visit many States or cities, plan for it to take several months... it would be like if you planed to tour around the entirety of Europe. if you just want to spend a few weeks, just pick ONE State to visit. (maybe two if they are smaller States)

Sometimes families that are poorer, or that don't know as much about nutrition will get kind of stuck going with more processed options though. It's also that besides being more expensive than highly processed foods, fruit transported from around the world is not going to sit on your shelf or in your refrigerator as long without spoiling, and it also takes effort to properly prepare it for child consumption (you need to wash your fruits and for children under a certain age, you should cut up grapes and blueberries to prevent choking), and fruits are not as easy to toss in a diaper bag or purse or whatever to bring with you to the park or library in case it's going to be your child snack time.
By far, the cost and accessibility is the biggest hurdle, and that, as others have pointed out, fruit at certain stores may look wonderful but still taste awful.

I love how excited you are about Walmart. And that video only scratched the surface. The grocery store is only about 1/3 of it. You can get everything there.

As an American, the idea that anyone would be excited about visiting a Walmart seems bizarre. Walmart is a department store for the working class.
Goldfish are a brand of small cracker.
Walmart is not a supermarket. It's a department store, selling all kinds of products. Most of them have food departments, but they are smaller than those of dedicated supermarkets.

Exactly, I don't get why all the "First Time Walmart" videos never leave the grocery portion - that's a relatively small part of a much bigger SuperCenter. Safeway/Krogers are true supermarkets.

Walmart supercenters (like the one in this video) contain a full grocery market basically attached to a department store. I like Walmart because I can usually find what I am looking for in some variation and prices are reasonable as compared to a Fresh Market that i would need a 2nd mortgage to shop on a continual basis.

The ones I've seen in Canada put a very strong emphasis on the grocery section, say 1/4 to 1/5th of total floor space, visible from the main entrance. This may be regional, though.

I'm SO done with the European remarks "Fat Americans"! We are not all fat. There are fat people in every county!! And I find it insulting to call ANYBODY fat!! We are all individuals and perfect they way we are!!! 🤨 And we have all kinds of fruits and vegetables!!!

While you are correct on both points -- not everyone is fat and everywhere has fat people -- it is also true that the US has the highest percentage of the population that is overweight of any Western/ industrialized nation. According to the World factbook, the US is #13 with 42.7% of the population meeting the "obese" standard. The next highest Western nation is New Zealand at #23 (34.3%). The highest EU country is Spain at #56 with approximately 24%. Germany, where this reactor is from, is #95 with only 19% of the population obese. So, from the point of view of many Europeans, the US is a lot fatter on average than Europeans are.

There is a pretty common grocery chain in the us by the name of “SafeWay” I always buy their French bread because it’s baked fresh daily and they bake more at 4pm (16:00). The bread is also $2.49 for a relatively good amount and comes out at about $0.16/oz (for reference one oz is about 28 grams)

I haven't been in a Safeway store in 52 years, since I lived in Virginia. We don't have any in the deep south. I always liked it above all other chains. I'll never forget how much I loved the Cragmont soft drinks. In my adult life Publix is the best, but after 52 years I don't really have any memories to make an honest comparison.

One of the problems Europeans have with American produce (fruits and vegetables) is that they taste bland or are not ripe when they are on display. But our produce is literally criss-crossing the entire country because each area produces foods unique to that area, so produce is picked before it ripens so that it doesn't arrive at its destination spoiled. It's why "farmers' markets" have become popular here, where local farmers sell local produce. And going into supermarkets while abroad is one of my favorite activities. Japanese markets are nothing like British or Italian or Mexican markets. It's fun.

"Cheetos" explanation. What was shown in the video was Cheetos flavored mac and cheese. Cheetos are a very popular snack food here in the US, made from puffed corn bits with cheese flavored powder all over them. Highly processed but delicious. Try not to eat too many.
Macaroni and cheese is made with a bechamel sauce with lots of cheese added and then mixed with elbow macaroni and then usually baked for a while. You can also buy it as a mix (as shown in video), but it's not comparable to homemade.

Walmart started out as a department store and only expanded to add the grocery section 10 - 12 years ago. So to me, I think of it more as an EVERYTHING store; Tires, Bath Towels, Lightbulbs, TVs, socks... and a grocery store chain secondarily. In fact I still shop at Aldi for about 1/2 my groceries because some stuff is still cheaper there than at Walmart.

To be fair, the quality of fruits and vegetables in the US are generally lower than in Europe (or at least lower than here in Portugal), unless you happen to get them in season. And the baked goods and prepared foods at Walmart are really not great, for the most part.

The thing is, Walmart being your supermarket is relatively new for most places. If you just want food to stock you’d go to your shoprites, your piggly wigglys, your krogers. Walmart is for when you want a handful of snacks, new pants and boots for work, a bicycle chain, fishing lures, a coffee pot, batteries, a flat screen tv, and to check if the new limited edition steel book release of your favorite movie trilogy was released yet

for the price tags in walmart, there is one price that is the actual price of the item. this could be the total price (without taxes) for the container OR it can be the 'price per pound' (typical for meats or veggies/fruits). this is usually in yellow. there is also an orange section of the price tag. this is the 'price per unit' it's how much per piece of the item you're paying, example. it's 12 ozs, but the 'price per unit' tells you what the price per ounce is... that way you can compare items of different sizes or different brands to see if you're getting a better deal.

Even tax preparation during the season. Pharmacy and pharmaceutical supplies. Sporting goods toys for children. Like I’ve said almost everything else is there. Footwear and underwear as well as clothing for everyone. Bulk food is available.
