@Chrisb.reacts My first exposure to top loaders was since moving from the UK to Berlin. Here very often people have top loaders as we don't usually use the kitchen for clothes washing, there's no dedicated room usually in an apartment. Which leaves the bathroom which is not so huge, so a small toploader works well. I was therefore somewhat surprised to hear you talking about them as if they are such an alien concept to germans lol. Is it just a city thing due to lack of an extra room maybe?

It's funny that your video is in fact your reaction to the appliances rather than his best attempt at a style of British humour. The original video is actually not really about appliances, it is supposed to be comedy. Show me the appliances!

That's a load of crap!! Most modern fridges water dispensers are very quick and fill your glass in seconds, not minutes. Also, the fridge does make ice cubes on it's own, you just need to hook it up to a water supply hose.

It is believed in the USA that socialism is a precursor to communism. Communism is the boogeyman to prevent socialism, but it is not required, because there are plenty of failed socialist nations to prove socialism doesn't work. Yet, there are many people in the USS who claim "the right kind of socialism hasn't been attempted yet, so we should play with fire and impliment it."

The reason that washing machines are top-loading in the USA is for simplicity of engineering and longevity. It is easier to design something with fewer potential leaks or failures. More elegant (if you make the adjustment to top-loading), less materials, longer lasting machines overall. Sometimes they are even for efficiency, by not combining a washer and dryer together.

I don't understand why he thinks it would be a huge pain to take clothes out of a top-load washing machine. Front loaders are so close to the ground, you have to bend way over, or squat down to get the clothes. That's a lot less convenient than being upright, and reaching for them. Genuinely confused by his thinking.

I live in the Pacific Northwest, on the Oregon coast. A dehumidifier is pretty much necessary if you don't want everything to mold and/or rust. It isn't really about comfort, just that nothing will ever dry if you don't have one. We run our dehumidifiers opposite of the rest of the country, though. We run them in the winter, not summer.

Do you actually feel a difference when the humidity is lower? Are you high?? Of course it's not a placebo! When you live in a high humidity place, like i do in Washington DC, a hot and humid day is very uncomfortable. You sweat a lot more in high humidity, and the last thing i want is to be sweating when i'm sitting on the couch in my own damn house. Also, high humidity can lead to mold growth, and can damage books, linens, and many other items. An air conditioner (for cooling) helps, but my place is still pretty humid, and i have to supplement with TWO dehumidifiers, in order to get the humidity down to 50-55. which is on the high side of optimal.

I have that same brand/model of refrigerator. It uses a water filter too, and when you put in a new filter you have to run the water to clear away any particulates until the water is clear/safe enough for drinking. It does take time filling many glasses until it's clear and safe.

Had a dehumidifier for my basement. It kept the dampness to a minimum and made it cooler feeling. I ran a drain line directly into the basement main drain to the sewer system rather than having to empty it out every day. It would turn off if the water catcher got full. This stopped it so it wouldn’t shut off. Around here the drier air the better for almost everything in the house.

I grew up with a top-loader washing machine. Yes, they can be a pain to get clothes out (there's no magic way to remove them), but I find them easier than squatting or bending over to side-load. With the top-loader, there is at least something to leverage yourself to get to the bottom of the washing machine. Side-loaders only came into my life as an adult, when saving water was the biggest concern. It depends on the environment. In arid places, water economy makes sense. Near the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, using the waters that flow by isn't quite so dire as there is plenty of water. What's the most important is sewage treatment, making sure the water going back into the river doesn't pollute it for the downriver folk. Even so, each community downriver has its own purifying plant to supply clean and drinkable water to its people.

On a lot of refrigerators like the one Laurence has, the automatic ice and water dispensers stop working way before the refrigerator reaches the end of its life. And that's the irritating bit about these side-by-side fridges. And the fridges are quite narrow, giving them much less useable room than you think. You can't even store a large frozen pizza in it without taking it out of the box and wedging it in on a diagonal. A top and bottom freezer/fridge is my preference.

Dehumidifiers are especially useful in the garage. In tropical climates, white mold can build up in the interior of your cars when stored in a hot garage. The dehumidifier - and some rice filled pillows - solves this problem. The refrigerators are plumbed, so making ice water and ice is automatic. The water is also filtered.

I have a cat and thus a litter box. For a while I had gotten litter that was about 50% fine silt due to cash flow problems. My cat would kick it up as he would normally, and it just hung in the air. I'd wake up seemingly clogged in all my passageways such that a hot beverage was absolutely necessary each morning. I put an air purifier next to the litter box, and in the morning I could breathe a lot easier. I think it has to do with load on the environment. They work when you need them, and there are situations when they are very necessary. In the home of a person with allergies, for example. Meanwhile I went back to 99% dust free cat litter, and my environment recovered, even though my cat continues to kick up litter.

The refrigerators are hooked up to a water line and automatically fill the ice trays. The refrigerator let's us know when the filter needs changing. We had a front loader washing machine, but I prefer the top loaders. The clothes get cleaner with top loaders.

About the US economy one should keep in mind that in larger part than many think, it is un-integrated with the rest of the world. It is true that the US Imports quite a lot, but that is mostly a matter of convenience. In fact the US is quite capable of manufacturing almost everything it needs while being completely energy independent. Historically the US has NEVER had an Export Trade-to-GDP more than 12%. Currently it is closer to about 9%, which effectively means that more than 80% of all US wealth is created internally without the rest of the world. The US has the world's largest concentration of farmable land in the world, sitting almost perfectly on the world's largest network of navigable waterways (the Mississippi River Basin and more) for internal shipping of products. It might also be noted that more than 90% of the world's supply of Ultra High Purity Quartz necessary for the production of top quality microchips is found in the US as well in North Carolina. The US could go almost entirely self-sufficient if it chose to and only lack in a few areas of Import, largely being out of season produce foods that are a luxury rather than a necessity. It shouldn't be forgotten that more than half of ALL was materials manufactured during WWII was from the US, and if necessary the US could do it again, although not quickly or easily. There would need to be a bit of build up, which incidentally is happening anyway as the US increasingly looks to bring more manufacturing back home.

I find getting clothes from a top loader easier because then I don't have to strain my back by bending over low to reach inside a front loader. Front or top, either way you have to reach in to get the clothes.

  • @harveythepooka

Top loaders are honestly better than front loaders. There is no chance that it will leak or grow mold if you keep it closed, and you can pause the wash cycle whenever you want. To transfer the clothes, you literally just pull the wash out. It's not hard at all. If you're small and your washer is big it might be hard to get socks from the bottom, but not a big deal and you can put socks in a delicates bag if it's an issue.

Oh....A/C's in America have dehumidifiers built into the unit. We have a little hose that runs off the unit in the attic to an outside wall that drains the water from the unit in the attic. My mother would put a bucket under that little hose and save the water to water Her potted plants. She firmly believed the water taken from the air was cleaner than the tap water. Knowing what I know now she was probably right.

The Wife and I live on the Texas Gulf Coast where the humidity is absolutely insane!!! When you go outside in the middle of summer you need a scuba dive tank and a respirator..... Okay thats a lie....but damn if it doesnt feel that way!!! When you have the A/C on in the summer the windows in your house have so much condensation on em you need windshield wipers!!! I'll never forget getting off the plane in Houston from Washington state when I was 5 and walking down the Jetway and feeling the humidity. I immediately started feeling sticky. Little did I know that that was going to be with me for the rest of my life.....unless We move. But turning 60 recently tells me the humidity is likely to be with me the rest of my life. Actually I've come to like the humidity.....went and visited a buddy in Nevada and within a few days my lips were cracking to the point that they started bleeding.
