I've had several boats with Mercruiser/ Mercury Bravo 3 drive power plants. They've got no room to criticize. Sea water pumps, carrier bearings, corrosion just to name a few. I find it funny how Mercury would take up such a smear campaign when their sterndrives are nothing but maintenance.

You hit the nail on the head! This is a great ALL AROUND boat. I own the AR210 because the price point and it fits in my garage. It's not spectacular in any one way but it's definitely the best boat for me. They are very versatile and fun boats. Switched to a Yamaha jet boat 4 year ago after owning many stern drives. Would never go back. Yamaha has made the most user friendly low maintenance boat on the market. Like he said it doesn’t do anything perfect but does everything well. They are 100% easier to dock once you get used to them.

We bought a 2005 SX 230 (before the jet boat boom) and owned it for 11 years. Want to talk about a gamble, bought at the CNY boat show in Upstate NY in February with no test ride and all of the other dealers telling me it wasn’t a real boat and just a fad/toy while telling me theirs was better.
During those 11 years, maintenance cost were less than $500.
The boat performed very well with very few complaints. It did come from the factory with a couple fit and finish issues but nothing crazy. We paid $28,500 in 2005 and sold it for $20,000 just over 11 years later.
We only sold to buy a bigger boat (27’ Monterey 278ss - (which i love for different reasons).
A lot of words summed up, that ‘05 Yamaha SX230 was easily the best boat at the best price I could have ever hoped

Very cool approach to this video, I do have 4 jet drive machines. 3 wetbikes and one wetjet. As far as safety, there is no problem. But you do have to run them on non weedy lakes, and watch shallow water. They do require a 1 foot clearance, keel to bottom, I always give 2 feet, just in case. As far as maintenance, they are very easy to work on. Got to love old school. Great vid to watch.

I almost bought AR230. Where I got a bit concerned was that you cant seem to buy full engine replacements for these so if you blow a motor you would be kind of scrweed where I can at least by a new Merc engine if I grenade it. The boat was a 2008 so it had a MR-1 engine which I believe is one series old with newer boats out of my price range. Otherewise I thought it was a really fun looking family wakesport/crusing boat

Over the years owning many Yamaha jetskis and owning many outboard motors, I can say 100% bang for buck a jetski engine delivers way more power, they are way more reliable, and they are way easier to maintain,
Just fill it up with fuel and change the oil and plugs yearly or 6 months and they will run forever
Accidentally start it with out the hose. No problems, no impellers to fail, these things a virtually bulletproof
Yamaha jet boats are the leaders in the market for a reason
Just don’t buy that rotax rubbish
    Cheers

Hi BroncosGuru- thank you for this great video. I am also an AR240 owner, 2016 model. First off, I love all of your videos. Keep up the great work. Secondly, I 100% agree w/you on this review. Overall a great boat, but a “jack of all trades” vessel. Doesn’t specialize in anything really, except for maintainable. I’ve owned my AR240 and an 2010 SX210 prior to that, the maintenance was all done my myself and quite intuitive. The price point is a great comment, but nobody ever mentions that there is no transmission, power steering, or trim on these boats. It’s a simple cantilever system that comprises these components which allows for easy maintenance, fewer failures, and is cheap for the manufacturer which allows them to either 1) upgrade on things like upholstery or 2) pocket the profits.
If possible, I would like to see a video on your maintenance of your AR240, specifically lubrication of this steering and ‘transmission’ system.
Overall, I love your videos. Keep them coming! Andy (Carlsbad, CA)

Just rented one a few weeks ago. My only complaint was the stern ladder. It was impossible to use with ease. Had to jump in water and use a lot of force. I own an AR240, and everything mentioned here is spot-on. We use ours in the pacific northwest for a mixture of lake watersports and fishing on the ocean (including crabbing). Definitely concur that it's a good all-around boat; it can do a little of everything. I rigged a scotty pot puller for the back, and we're crabbing.
The big downside for the PNW is not having any form of cover for bad weather, if you're doing an ocean day. Some people have custom canvas built for it, somewhat solving that problem.
Actually *using* a porta-potty in the compartment can be a little tough ;) If you're selecting a porta-potty to go in there, think "short and small".
One note about the Yamahas -- while the price you pay is low compared to many boats on the market, Yamaha dealers apparently have a pretty small markup relative to other boat brands. So those higher priced boats? Dealers might have the same cost as the Yamaha.
It's also pretty important to shop around on maintenance costs (and in my case, be willing to tow the boat for a big job).
Almost forgot -- that old Mercury "please buy a sterndrive instead" says "no rudder" -- and there we are *looking* at the rudder on the AR240 ;) Works great!

Let me stop you right at 3:19 ... I don't know where you live or boat, but I'm in Clearwater, FL. The boat getting clogged with sea weed was the #1 reason I got rid of it. I love Yamaha and had their jet ski's when I was a teen. We always had to unclog them. FFW 20 years later I have my dream AR240 thinking 'I'm sure they solved that issue'...NOPE. I thought this boat would be perfect, but for me those 4 reasons Mercury mentioned are exactly why I sold it. If only I could get the Yamaha boat with a Yamaha outboard! Now that would be perfect.

I'm on the Georgian Bay of Lake Huron, the 30 Thousand Island region (1 million shoals). The water levels have a 5-foot range from low to high, and at times the water was only 30" deep at my dock. 13" draft versus 36" draft is a real advantage. I needed a bigger boat for all those grandkids. At purchase time, the 24' outboard bowriders were $100K! In my mind, I couldn't justify the cost. I tested the noise with a decibel meter, and the SX240 was 84 decibels, and my 2002 Bayliner 2150 classic was 80 decibels. When on a boat underway, the wind noise often disrupts conversation anyway. The boat is very quiet at anchor (lol).

I'm not sure about this particular model, but a lot of 'jet boats' have a reduction in steering ability if the throttle is set in neutral or too low. This happens a lot with jet skis, where the rider sees a hazard, drops the throttle, and tries to steer around the danger. The thrust vectors will not work if there isn't enough water for thrust. On the other hand, the thrust vector steering is more responsive and has that neat 'reverse' feature (works the same way as thrust reversal on commercial jets), something that an inboard/ outboard also have, but it's not nearly as effective.

I just bought a 2015 Yamaha 242 limited S up here I Canada near Toronto Ontario... the boat has 60 hours and of course because of our Canadian weather our boating season is over for the next 7 months 😫 but the good news is over the winter l can start buying stuff for the boat to install in the spring.... I can go on and on (because I love talking Yamaha boats) but my question is about the articulating keel.... my old Yamaha didn’t have it (2007 SX210) so I had cobra fins on the boat to help with low speed steering..... so I was wondering if adding Thrust Vectors to my new boat will make that much of a difference? I know it would be a added expense but is it worth it? Please help me lol 😂 I notice you don’t have them on your boat in this video.... is the reason for not having them is because you don’t think we need them? And do you think it’s good enough with the articulating keel and a waste of money to add the Thrust Vectors? Please let me know I would really really appreciate it.... keep up the good work and the videos because it’s the only thing that will get me through the winter!

I agree with the title, not a boat for me. Make sure you test drive a few, outboards and jets. I'll always be an outboard guy now. I almost did buy one and after the test drive, never, never. Damb noisy, flat ride with no trim, your screaming RPMs and it seems like it should do 100 by then, if it did I would be interested, way to slow for all the RPMs and noise. I did like the hull and the layout and the useful features, great design!! I wish I could get that hull with a 250 or 300 Yamaha outboard, I have no idea why they don't offer both, seems only natural. I got a 2015 230 vantage with a Merc 300 verado, love it, other than the price.

I'd mention that you CAN get upgrades on the Jet boats, but that means going with the "upgraded" model, you can't pick and choose which you want unfortunately.

Correct and a handful to dock. We really wanted to love it considering the price point on these Yamahas but tough comparing heavier stern drive boats.

I personally don't mind the Yamaha doesn't have a ton of options because I enjoy upgrading the speakers myself adding lights myself or anything else pretty much do myself. You can't beat the price what you got from Yamaha. Friend of mine still has a 2009 ar210 the boat hasn't had a single problem. Maintenance is key.

Not picking on this boat specifically, but I don't know why more boat builders don't fill more of the spaces in the hull with foam like Boston Whaler does. Can you review some non-Whaler boats with this feature? Years ago we broke a stringer in the hull of our boat in rough water a few miles off shore. That was enough of an experience that I shopped for a Boston Whaler next specifically because it would not sink. It can still flip over and float upside down of course so I'm not trying to claim that it's some miracle go through anything boat, but you can pull the plug sitting still and your ankles don't even get wet, which is a nice feature for a boat in the ocean. But I really scratch my head about why more companies don't do the same thing and add significant amounts of foam to the hull specifically for flotation? About a year ago we picked up 2 guys out of the ocean after watching their boat sink right in front of us after taking some big waves over the stern, the boat was gone in less than a minute. That would have been a 100% different story if the boat just had some foam in it.

Love jet boats but I heard the only bad part for me at least is that I dock my boat in brackish water... Heard it is not good to leave it in That kind of water for a season.. Now if I was splashing it every weekend I would definitely own one.

How is the low speed maneuvering? Jet skis suck but at least they are small. You can't find a good neutral like a prop drive. They also cant steer unless you are pushing water. I like to slowly coast into the dock in neutral and keep the reverse ready in case that is too hot. It seems like you have no choice but to come in hot and hit that reverse at just the right time. Otherwise I like the 2 engine reliability and shallow draft.

In the UK I think they could allow your boat mainly rivers lakes as open front insurance would be a problem to take it out at sea may not even be allowed. I am sure the Ray boats would not pass safety/ Because if look at them sitting in the water you can see the front lowers down in to the water so hitting a wave at a wrong time will instantly fill up with water and be a danger. and the larger boats Seavee with back heavy front up in the air would be classed as seeing distance problem as could not see a swimmer from a certain distance. Most UK boats tested by filling them up with water fully loaded and see what happens they should never sink and fuel system should never leak. Our laws are to protect swimmers. There was a law that like life jackets Flares radio GPS you had to carry paddles not sure if that is still a thing with paddles. I liked to do off shore water skiing but there are strict laws in the UK now.

The people on those forums are thinking of the old jet boats way back in the day which really did suck for pretty much everything. Jet drives now a days have fixed most of what was wrong. The only thing they haven’t fixed is the inefficiency of the jet drive itself and there’s nothing they can do about that.

I really do love this video and it helped when we bought our 212x a little over a year ago. Loved that boat. It did a lot of things well. Got rid of it a few weeks ago as we decided we loved surfing as a family. It didn't do that great unfortunately without a bunch of work and additional sacks. It did however do most other things better than our v-drive. We definitely have more seating as well.

I've got the exact same boat (model, year and color). I say these boats are like a family SUV. It is good all around but not great at any one thing...well #1 at price point, maybe half the price of 24' wake boats. It goes 50mph, holds 12 people, it tows tubes very well, ski and wake boards are average. Wake is big enough to annoy skiers but not large enough for wake boarders or surfers.

They are kickazz boats for sure. I have owned inboards, outboards, and jetskis. First, comparing screwing up an impeller in a jet pump and and outboard prop is insane. One you can replace the other you have to be mechanical inclined not to mention screwing up the the jet pump itself. Isnt there a wear ring in these things that can crack when getting something hard sucked up which would cause cavitation leaving you screwed? Second, outboards you can run in much shallower water with trim, whats the min depth here 2 or 3 ft is my guess other wise you risk sucking crap up from the bottom. Third, I have kept boats with outboards in the salt water for months at a time, no way you could do that here.
Looks great, fast, awesome boat but is for a very small crowd imo!

I live south Florida. And have been holding off buying a jet boat cause the culture is so adamant that those boats suck. But my friends that have boats are always fixing and repairing stuff on their outboards. They say these are runabouts and can’t handle open ocean. But yet there are a lot of videos of people making it to Bimini and abaco on even 19ft Yamahas. The only other thing is is most people down here are center console guys cause of the resale value and fishing. Idk why Yamaha doesn’t come out with a dedicated salt water center console similar to the scarab 255. If Yamaha does that with a 25-27 ft jet boat they would sell a lot of boats all over Florida and the gulf.

In my opinion, the water intake sucks the boat into the water, thus cutting waves better! It could also be due to the boat being heavier than my previous 21' bowrider. It has also been reported that "sucking into the water" increases fuel consumption. I dunno 'bout that! THAT WOULD BE AN ISSUE IF I WAS COMMUTING BACK AND FORTH TO WORK WITH IT, NOT A DEAL-BREAKER! So, do I spend another $50,000 to save $20 in gas for an afternoon trip to a restaurant on one of the islands?
